Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)
"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. " ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Interesting overflight video showing the immensity of the ongoing eruption at Iceland's Bardarbunga volcanic complex. Recorded in late November.
The eruption continues with little changes as of December 3. While most of the lava now remains on top of the already emplaced lava field, more than 75 square km large, several lateral outbreaks are active as well.
The most active one, to the north, has advanced more than 450 m in a single day.
Seismic activity remains high under the volcano.

Lava from Fogo Volcano Threatens to Engulf Nearby Villages (Nov 28)
Molten lava from Fogo volcano slid towards the town of Cha das Caldeiras on Thursday, threatening to destroy it and other nearby villages just four days after an initial eruption.
Television images showed a huge lake of steaming black lava just meters away from houses in the village of Portela. The village is close to Cha das Caldeiras, whose 1,200-strong population has been evacuated to emergency shelters.
"In the last few hours, there was an increase in volcanic activity and the lava is flowing towards Portela and this community may be completely engulfed by lava," Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves said on Thursday during a visit to Fogo.
"The potential is for the total destruction of Cha das Caldeiras, one of the most fertile regions of Cape Verde," he added, calling on international aid for the country.
The lava flows have covered approx. 400 hectars of land, including 26 hc of farmland.
A dozen of houses from the village of Portela have already been consumed; the larger part of the village, including most of its economic infrastructure (hotels, wine cellars, farm land) remain at elevated risk to follow the same fate in the next days if activity and the advance of the lava flow, now a few meters per hour, continue at similar intensity.
Most inhabitants from Portela have been evacuated, only less than 100 more still need to be.
According to news, a 3rd evacuation route has been opened to facilitate transport of people and goods.

Plumes of volcanic ash caused flight cancellations and disruptions yesterday in the first eruption of a Japanese volcano in more than 22 years.
Mount Aso - situated on Kyushu island 625 miles (1,005km) south from the capital Tokyo - spewed out lava, debris and smoke while expelling columns of ash 3,280 feet (1km) into the sky, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Lava Flows from Fogo Volcano Threaten Portela (Nov 25)
The northern lava flow branch has started to enter the village of Portela and today destroyed and/or damaged several buildings, including the headquarters of the Fogo Nature Park.
The village, located at the northern end of the main road inside the caldera, is at risk of being cut of by lava flows: If the main road becomes covered, only a difficult and long passage to the NE via Monte Velha remains as land evacuation route.
Local news sources and recent video footage suggest an increase in activity. Several vents have opened at the fissure on the southwestern foot of the Pico del Fogo cone. Activity at most of the vents is violently explosive with significant gas and ash emissions
For this reason, Cabo Verde Airlines has canceled all flights departing and arriving in Sao Felipe Airport on the west coast.
The SO2 gas plume from the eruption has spread to the north and already reached the northern Cape Verde islands. Authorities recommend people to drink plenty of water.
Since the beginning of the eruption, inhabitants of the Cha caldera have been using trucks and various other available vehicles to evacuate goods from the threatened area. Local media report fuel shortages which makes the situation more difficult.
Looting and equipment theft, in particular from the headquarter building of the Nature Park, which only had been opened in March this year, add to the problems.
The eruption's heaviest economic damage is probably the destruction of vinyards in the area. The lava flows threaten the storage cellar with approx. 100,000 liters of wine.
To manage the volcanic crisis, a crisis cabinet was set in place by the government.

Update on the Fogo Volcano eruption off West Africa...
A rare eruption of Cape Verde volcano Pico do Fogo, its biggest in decades, caused the closure of the airport and evacuation of local residents.
A photograph posted on the local RTC TV station website showed a huge plume of smoke rising into the sky, visible from the capital Praia on a neighbouring island.
"Things could deteriorate in the coming moments, in the coming hours," prime minister Jose Maria Neves said in a statement.
"We've called on people to heed the authorities' instructions, people should abandon Cha das Caldeiras."
The main road which provides access to Chã das Caldeiras is cut because the lava coming out of the volcano was already destroyed three poles of CVTelecom.
The Cova Tina location is under heavy "rain" of fine sand.
The smell of sulfur from the eruption have also reached the city of S. Filipe.
The eruption has increased in intensity, having opened another crater in the volcano, totaling three craters.
However, even with strong smell of sulfur and dust spread through the air, some people have refused to leave their homes.
The volcano last erupted in 1995, causing minor damage.

Mexico's Colima Volcano Spews Rock and Ash (Nov 21)
The Colima volcano in western Mexico has erupted, sending a column of ash about 3 miles (5 kilometers) into the air.
Mexico's federal civil defense office said Friday that ash has fallen on towns as far as 15 miles (25 kilometers) from the peak, which is also known as the Volcano of Fire.
Glowing hot rock tumbled down the volcano's flanks over a mile (2 kilometers) from the crater.
Ash fall was reported in the town of Queseria, Colima, and the towns of Tonila and Zapotiltic in the neighboring state of Jalisco.
"We recommend that people cover their nose and mouth, protect sources of potable water, and avoid dumping ash in drainage systems because it hardens with the moisture," national civil protection coordinator Luis Felipe Puente told Foro television.

Alaska's Pavlof Volcano Eruption Intensifies (Nov 15)
Scientists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory Saturday raised the alert level for Pavlof Volcano from "watch" (orange) to "warning" (red) Saturday as an ash cloud rose 30,000 feet above sea level.
Planes are being warned to avoid airspace near an erupting Alaska volcano.
"The intensity of seismic tremor has increased significantly over the past 6 hours," AVO wrote in an activity alert.
The National Weather Service said on Saturday ash was being blown to the west and northwest of Pavlof Volcano.
Pavlof began erupting three days ago, pushing lava out from a vent near its summit. On Friday, the ash cloud reached 16,000ft.
Alaska Volcano Observatory geophysicist Dave Schneider said the eruption intensified at 6am on Saturday, sending the ash cloud higher. Schneider said it was not clear how long the eruption will last, as Pavlof’s eruptions may last for weeks or months with varying levels of intensity.

Scientists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory said that Pavlof Volcano entered a "new phase of eruptive activity" Wednesday, prompting a heightened alert level as the volcano spewed an ash plume into the atmosphere.
A ground observer in Cold Bay, a community about 36 miles away, reported seeing ash emissions at around 9,000 feet elevation. At 4:50 p.m., "minor ash emissions" could also be seen from a web camera operated in Cold Bay by the Federal Aviation Administration, according to the AVO.
Pavlof Volcano last erupted beginning in early June and ending in late July of this year, and is considered one of the most active volcanoes in Alaska.
hortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, AVO upgraded the alert level for the volcano from "normal" to "watch" in a volcano activity notification posted online.
In its post, the AVO said seismic tremor had increased over the past few hours and remained elevated. A low cloud deck obscured satellite observation of the volcano, it said.
