"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? Peru's El Misti Volcano Awakening After 5 Centuries (Jan 30)

For the first time in over 500 years, Peru's El Misti volcano is showing signs of potentially eruptive activity.

According to the committee charged with volcanic risk management for the region of Arequipa, El Misti is one of a dozen potentially active volcanoes in Peru but its proximity to a million residents have the officials concerned. 

Gas emissions and magmatic activity have been recorded, Peru This Week reports, but officials note the activity does not necessarily pose an immediate danger of eruption.

Officials warned people living nearby to refrain from building property too close to the volcano and to be prepared for evacuations, Wired reports.

According to the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program, El Misti is Peru's most well-known volcano and hasn't had a major eruption since the 15th century.

Increased Activity Along the African Rift (Jan 28)

Volcano-tectonic activity has increased in recent weeks along the Ethiopian part of the East African rift, coinciding with the sudden disappearance of a large reservoir in Kenya.

In the Danakil depression of northern Ethiopia, the continuously active lava lake at Erta Ale started to overflow on the 27th of January.

Erta Ale is one of many volcanoes dotted along the East African rift, which can be compared to a large tear running from Erithrea through Ethiopia, along the great lakes of Uganda, Kenyia, DR Congo, Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi down into Mozambique, and which is actively pulling the African continent apart.

This latest overflow created new pahoehoe lava flows that cover Erta Ale´s caldera floor both to the north and south of the lava lake´s eruptive vent.

The lava lake is still overflowing and its unclear how long this phase of lava overflow will continue.

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake occured along this same rift system but in southern Ethiopia on 24 January at 18h34 UTC, with a hypocenter at about 10 km depth. Although not very strong, such earthquakes are rather unusual in this area near Lake Awassa, as shown by the ´´I felt it´´ reports from people living 20 km east of the epicenter and which vary from V (moderate shaking) to VI (strong shaking) on the Mercalli scale which ranges from I (not felt) to XII (extreme).

Reports describe books falling from shelfs and cracks in many local houses, frightening the inhabitants which remained outside for the rest of that night. Since this first earthquake, more shaking is reported to have occurred afterwards on irregular intervals. The epicenter of Sunday´s M4.2 earthquake was only 22 km S-SE of Corbetti caldera volcano.

The currently increased activity at Erta Ale was first reported in November 2015 when travellers visiting the caldera observed that the level of the lava lake was less than 1 meter below the rim of the vent. The lake´s activity remained high throughout the next 9-10 weeks, with the lava lake falling and rising repeatedly, and eventually culminated in a first overflow of its vent around midnight of 15 to 16 January 2016. The previous phase of increased volcanic activity with lava overflows dates back to December 2010, making it a rather rare event.

A series of similarly sized earthquakes (magnitude 4.5 or greater) started on the night of 12 January 2011 near a sparsely populated area of the Erithrea-Ethiopia border in the northern part of the Danakil depression. The earthquakes were linked to the simultaneous eruption of nearby Nabro stratovolcano, which up to 12 January 2011 had no record of historic eruptions. This sudden volcanic activity at the northern end of the East African rift continued for about one month and formed a ca. 15 km long lava flow. The ash cloud of this eruption rose up to 14 km and drifted to W-NW, forming a minor disruption to air traffic. On the 19th of June, the Nabro eruption produced the up to then highest concentrations of sulphur dioxide emission in the earth´s atmosphere ever recorded from space. The ash and tephra fall from this eruption covered a large area, negatively affecting water, crops and cattle of the local nomadic Afar people. Many Afar villages near the volcano were evacuated and at least 38 people were reportedly killed, but the exact death toll is this eruption is unknown.

The Popocatépetl volcano, just 35 miles from Mexico City and only 20 miles from nearby city Peubla sent a mile high plume of ash into the air, putting thousands of people living within 10 miles of it on a yellow alert to be ready to evacuate should activity increase.

The Mexican capital is the world’s fourth most populated city and home to 20 million people, while Peubla has more than 6 million people living there, and all could be at risk in both cites in the event of a catastrophic eruption.

The volcano alert follows fears earlier this month that a second large volcano in Mexico - the 3,850 metres-high Colima in western Mexico - could be about to face a large scale eruption for the first time in 100 years.

Popocatépetl last saw a major eruption in 2000, but early warnings saw 41,000 people evacuated in advance, averting a major disaster.

In 2005 it had a minor eruption, but activity has been increasing since 2012, with this week's some of the most notable, prompting officials to issue the warning.

If the volcano experienced a massive eruption, an estimated nine million people would be in the blast zone and the impact on the atmosphere could be catastrophic.

Popocatépetl has erupted more than 20 times since 1519, according to records.

The glacier-covered peak is 5,426 metres-high.

Meanwhile Colima experienced a saw an ash cloud of 1.8 miles high expelled earlier this month.

This also put locals on standby for evacuations immediately afterwards.

Ash From Russian Volcano Threatens Air Routes (Jan 19)

Russian officials issued a code orange alert for the Zhupanovsky volcano after a powerful explosion spewed ash five miles into the air above the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The explosion at 16:36 local time generated an ash plume that rose to altitudes of 23,000-26,200 ft and drifted east, creating a potential threat to air routes between North America and Asia.

Mexico’s Colima Volcano Erupting More Frequently (Jan 19)

With several eruptions after Christmas 2015, the volcano has become unusually active.

It marked Christmas and New Year’s Eve 2015 with a bang, sending rocks and associated objects nearly 7,000 feet up in the air three times over two days.

Two weeks later, anyone going close to the volcano is still being told to watch out for falling chunks of rock up to 50 cm in diameter, and ash.

The volcano spewed a large column of gas and ash some 2,500m high into a blue sky on 19 January at 8.30am local time.

The morning explosion was preceded by an eruption of incandescent rock at the volcanos mouth at 11pm local time on 18 January.

Increased Explosions at Guatemala's Fuego Volcano (Jan 20)

Another phase of increased explosive activity and lava effusion is taking place at the volcano. Small pyroclastic flows were observed this morning.

After the violent phase during the first days of 2016, this is the second paroxysm of the volcano this year already.

Over the past months, such phases have occurred at astonishing rhythmic intervals of 3-4 weeks (see the peaks on the thermal signal graphic).

The Zhupanovsky volcano in Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday released ash to the height of 8 kilometers above the sea level after almost two months of relative calm, a member of the local group of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has said. « Today at around 4.30 p.m. local time [3.30 a.m. GMT] the Zhupanovsky volcano spewed ash to the height of up to 8 kilometers [5 miles] above the sea level. The ash column could be seen with the naked eye from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and some other settlements, » the scientist said. Experts said the ash cloud spreads in the eastern direction towards the Pacific Ocean.

The populated areas are currently not under threat. « At the moment, the ash cloud has spread to 20 kilometers and it continues moving towards the ocean, » the member of the group said. An « orange » code of warning for the aviation has been issued. Travel companies have been asked not to organize tours to the areas close to the Zhupanovsky volcano. The Aviation Color Codes reflect four levels of danger posed for civilian aircraft overflying areas adjacent to volcanoes and range from ‘Green’ to ‘Red’ codes.

Peru's Ubinas Volcano Erupts (Jan 15)

Ubinas volcano registered a new explosion this afternoon, sending an ash column 3,000 meters above the crater.

The ash column scattered south and southwest, reaching a radius of 10 kilometers.

The towns affected by the emission of ashes and gas include Querapi, Ubinas, Tonohaya, San Miguel, Anascapa, Huatagua, Sacohaya and communities located in the Moquegua region.

About 600 families live near Ubinas volcano within a radius of 12 kilometers informed Civil Defense authorities. They recommend that local populations take necessary precautions by wearing goggles and protecting water sources.

Evacuation Ordered as Indonesia's Ergon Volcano Rumbles to Life (Jan 12)

Officials have ordered an evacuation of residents living at the foot of Mount Egon on the island of Flores, in East Nusa Tenggara province, following an increase in volcanic activity.

The Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation Center, or PVMBG, raised the alert status for the volcano to level 3 on its four-point scale, which indicates “an imminent eruption or disaster.”

The new alert came into effect as of 6 a.m. local time (5 a.m. in Jakarta) on Wednesday, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, or BNPB.

Under the heightened alert status, the PVMBG has extended the exclusion radius from the volcano’s crater to three kilometers from the initial 1.5 kilometers enforced on Dec. 15, when the PVMBG raise the alert status from 2 to 3. That put the village of Egon Gahar in the danger zone, prompting an evacuation of residents.

Egon’s last major eruption was in April 2008, but volcanic earthquakes have been registering there almost regularly since November 2010.

Egon is one of five volcanoes in Indonesia on level 3 alert. The others – all of which are currently erupting or have recently erupted – are Soputan, Lokon and Siau, in North Sulawesi province; and Bromo, in East Java.

Another volcano, Sinabung in North Sumatra, is on level 4 alert, and has been erupting sporadically – and spectacularly – since September 2013.

Fourteen other volcanoes are on level 2 alert.
