Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)

"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Seismic tremors at Colombian volcanoes

...Ruiz and Machin are both on elevated alert status, but Machín is the more interesting of the two as it has likely been almost 900 years since it last erupted. The volcano is a dome complex that has produced pyroclastic flows and mudflows sourced from explosive eruptions, some of which traveled over 40 km from the domes in the ancestral caldera. There has been an increase in seismic activity - 139 earthquakes in August alone - under Machín for the past year or so (check out the webicorder), thus necessitating the increased alert status, but little else has changed. These earthquakes have been at two depths, from 1-5 km and 5-14 km below and to the southeast of the main domes. This potential activity has real ramifications in the region around Machín, such as decisions on where to build schools.

Undated image of Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia.

Over at the more famous Nevado del Ruiz (see above), seismicity has increased dramatically over the course of 2011 (the 20 year anniversary since its last eruption). During the month of August alone, almost 400 likely volcanically-related earthquakes occurred at Ruiz. Sulfur dioxide measurements are listed as "moderate" but no signs of deformation have occurred at the volcano. All that shaking means that Ruiz is also on yellow alert status, suggesting that an eruption might be in the cards. There are no webcams that I have found for Ruiz, but you can see the live webicorder traces.

These two volcanoes are located close to populated areas - Manizalez and Pereira (my mother's hometown) for Ruiz and Ibague for Machín, so they will be closely watched by INGEOMINAS for the slightest change in their activity.....

Indonesia, Mt.Tambora - Three areas were emptied of community activities both wood seekers and tourists.

Head of Geology and Mineral Resources Office of Mines and Energy West Nusa Tenggara Muhammaddun said, there are three disaster-prone areas in the Mount Tambora.
First, I disaster-prone areas are located in a radius of 8 kilometers. Second, disaster-prone region II at a radius of 5 kilometers. Third, disaster-prone region III in a radius of 3 kilometers.

"In the three disaster-prone areas that are not residential areas. But still discharged from community activities both wood seekers and tourists," said Muhammaddun, Mataram, Monday, September 12, 2011.

Furthermore, people living area of the river either in Bima and Dompu also asked to be alert if at any time cause an increase in the frequency of the gusts of lava.

Iceland, Earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano sparks interest

(Also news about this:

http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_news/Is_Iceland%E2...

http://www.visir.is/skjalftahrina-i-toppgig-oraefajokuls/article/20...)

The earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano three weeks ago has sparked interest among volcanologist and geologists in Iceland. As the last earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano was only the third earthquake swarm to take place in the last 20 years. But this was a subject of a news from Stöð 2 (Channel 2) this evening.

While a eruption is not expected any time soon from Öræfajökull volcano. It is clear that Öræfajökull volcano has started the long (?) path to a eruption (question mark, as we all know sometimes volcanoes just skip the long waiting part and go strait to the eruption phase as a surprise to everyone).

Philippines, Bulusan Volcano - Seismic activity and white steam was observed

A marked increase in seismicity of Bulusan Volcano (12.7667°N, 124.0500°E) has been indicated by eleven (11) ) volcanic earthquakes recorded by the seismic network during the past 24 hours. During cloud breaks, weak to moderate emission of white steam was observed from the southwest vents creeping upslope before drifting to the east. Steaming activity from other thermal vents varied from wispy to weak. Ground deformation survey (precise leveling) conducted last 16 - 20 August 2011 yielded no significant change at Inlagadian leveling line on the NNE flank but yielded slight inflation at Mapaso leveling line on the SSE flank, relative to the previous survey last 07-09 June 2011....

Indonesia, Mt.Tambora - Evacuation Plans Prepped as Mount Tambora Alert Level Is Raised

Provincial authorities raised the alert level of Mount Tambora to the second-highest available as observers noted an increase of volcanic activity in the volatile mountain.
“On August 30, we recorded seven volcanic earthquakes and since Sept. 8 the frequency of the quakes rose substantially, to between 12 and 16 per day,” Husnuddin, head of the West Nusa Tenggara Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), told the Jakarta Globe on Sunday.
The BPBD chief said a team of observers had been immediately deployed to Mount Tambora.
The volcano, which was the site of the world’s deadliest eruption on record, showed no apparent visual signs of any upcoming eruption, but data collected on mechanical instruments gave cause for concern.
“We still hope Mount Tambora’s alert level will not increase further. We hope we can lower the status of the volcano. Let us all pray everything will return to normal,” Husnuddin said.
Abdul Haris from the Mount Tambora observatory station said the heightened alert status meant an eight-kilometer exclusion zone was being imposed.
“We fear there will be toxic gas as a direct result of the increased activity,” he said.
Husnuddin said the BPBD swiftly met with leaders of the three districts surrounding the volcano — Dompu, Bima and Sumbawa.
The agency also held talks with the leadership of Pekat and Tambora, two Dompu subdistricts near Tambora’s crater, to discuss possible evacuation plans if the alert status reaches the highest level. The agency also had identified locations for possible shelters to house people living around the volcano.
There are four villages in the two subdistricts that are about eight kilometers from the crater.
The BPBD requested several organizations be on stand-by, including the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and the country’s Armed Forces, which have already deployed officials to several response stations in the two subdistricts.
Two main evacuation routes for people in the four villages have also been identified.
The volcano’s April 10, 1815, eruption killed more than 90,000 people, including some who died from famine and disease in the aftermath of the event. It is estimated to have had a Volcanic Explosivity Index value of seven, the only such explosion since the Hatepe eruption in New Zealand in the year 180, and only the fifth in human history.
Classified as a “supercolossal event,” Tambora’s 1815 eruption ejected immense amounts of volcanic dust into the upper atmosphere, significantly impacting the global climate for many years afterward. In Indonesia, the volcano’s roar could be heard more than 800 miles away.

Iceland, Katla volcano - Two earthquake swarms during the night.

During the night there where two earthquake swarms in Iceland. One of this earthquake swarms was man made.

The larger earthquake swarm was in Hengill volcano and was man made. It happens and the hydrothermal plant pumps down cold water into the bedrock and changes the pressure and strain in the bedrock and nearby sediments that make up this area. The earthquakes only happens when cold water is being pumped down into the ground. When they are not pumping cold water into the ground, no earthquakes happens. Largest earthquakes in this man made earthquake swarm where ML2.5 and ML2.2 according to automatic measurements of Iceland Met Office. But most of the earthquakes where less then ML1.0 in size.

The second earthquake swarm that did happen during the night was in Katla volcano. This earthquake swarm is no surprise to people how have been watching Katla volcano activity since July. This earthquake swarm in Katla volcano was however small during the night. But there did more earthquake activity in Katla volcano around 18:00 UTC yesterday. But overall it seems that Katla volcano has slowed down a bit compared to last few days.
Earthquakes in Katla volcano during the past 48 hours. Copyright of this picture belongs to Iceland Met Office.

For the moment it is rather quiet in Iceland, as there is currently not that much activity in Katla volcano. But that can change without any warning at all. As Iceland is highly active in both volcanoes and earthquakes.

* AUGUST 2  : Chile’s Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Continues To Spew Ash

* AUGUST 27 : Chile's Caulle volcano in Puyehue mountain erupted early this morning

Found this.

* Steady Eruption of Puyehue-Cordón Caulle

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=51991

A mild eruption continues at Chile’s Puyehue Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex, almost three months since activity began on June 4, 2011. This pair of natural-color satellite images shows the steadiness of Puyehue Cordón Caulle’s activity on the morning and afternoon of August 30, 2011. According to SERNAGEOMIN, the Chilean National Service of Geology and Mining, continuous tremors were associated with the emissions of gas and ash.

These images were taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra (morning, top) and Aqua (afternoon, bottom) satellites. The volcanic plume is pale, almost white, and streams to the northeast of the erupting vent. The small, dark area immediately beneath the plume is a fresh lava flow emplaced during the current eruption. Several lakes downwind (east) of the volcano are colored bright blue-green by fine ash suspended in the water. Some of the lakes are still partially covered by gray floating pumice.
