In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

image: http://edge.liveleak.com/80281E/u/u/ll2/hd_video_icon.jpg

The Coast Guard rescued two St. Petersburg fishermen after their
37-foot boat sank 52 miles northwest of Boca Grande early Monday. At
2:27 a.m. watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector St.
Petersburg, received multiple Mayday calls via marine radio VHF-FM
channel 16 from the captain of the commercial fishing boat, Ruby-D,
stating his boat was sinking, and, along with his crewmember, was
abandoning ship.An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater and a 45-foot response boat-medium from Station Cortez, Fl., were launched to the last known location of the activated EPIRB.

The boat crew arrived on scene at approximately 4:25 a.m., spotted a strobe
light in the distance and quickly located the fishermen in a life raft
nearby. The fishermen reported having stepped into the life raft
just as the boat sank, and used a strobe light and flares to help signal
the rescue crews to their location."These two men were quick to
react to a life threatening situation," said Petty Officer 2nd Class
Kyle Gaub, the coxswain aboard the RB-M. "They utilized all the correct
safety equipment including an EPIRB, strobe light and flares which
helped our search ten-fold."The RB-M crew brought both fishermen aboard and transported them safely back to Station Cortez.

Former Tauranga restaurant sinks

The Kestrel ferry, a former Tauranga restaurant, has sunk overnight at its berth in Auckland.

Auckland councillor Chris Darby tweeted that the Kestrel had broken up in the water.

"Ferry flotsam visible on the Waitemata from my morning ferry following the sudden sinking of the historic Kestrel at its berth overnight," he posted.

Luke Henshall, spokesman for Panuku Development Auckland, said: "I can confirm it has sunk at its berth at Wynyard Berth overnight."

A worker at Wynyard Quarter said he was completely shocked and saddened when he saw the boat.

"We got told at work that it looked like it had sunk so we came to look and there was nothing there, just rope. Now bits and pieces are bobbing on top of the water."

He said the incident was extremely sad.

"There is so much history here."

The man said it could have sunk in the past three hours.

Pieces of the boat can be seen floating to the top of the water surface.

It has been cordoned off by an floating orange cordon.

The cabin top can be seen amid other floating debris.

CEO of Auckland Seaplanes Chris Sattler said he was alerted to the incident early this morning.

"I got a call this morning just after six this morning informing us the Kestrel had sunk overnight.

"At that stage there was no debris in the water and there was no danger to navigational safety in the harbour," he said.

"They have now cordoned off the area where the Kestrel has sunk and they are retaining all the parts you see floating there."

Mr Sattler said it was a huge loss to the trust which was looking to restore it.

"It is a bit of a sad story because they were looking to restore the Kestrel but it was just a bit too expensive for the trust so they were waiting for something positive to happen and unfortunately I didn't happen."

He said his business would continue to operate today.

General manager of Panuku Development Auckland Marinas, Tom Warren, said it was unclear what had caused the Kestrel to sink.

"We are still looking into that at the moment. We were told at about 5.50 this morning and we are now just working through how to deal with the challenge that we have here."

He said it was also unclear what time the Kestrel had sunk.

"We will be reviewing out CCTV cameras to find that out."

He said he believed no one had been on board when it sank.

Mr Warren said the area had been bunded - a cordoning method which captures both debris and hydro carbons which may leak into the water.

"We have bonded the area so we will contain any hydro carbons. The Kestrel was supposedly meant to be completely clear of any oil so there should be none of that.

"The [cordon] will hold the debris that are there and once the Kestrel Preservation Society has contacted their insurance assessors they will start to clean up the debris that is there."

Mr Warren said there was no obvious evidence as to what had caused the boat to sink.

He said the plan now was to contain the debris and then work on dealing with the wreck and how it is removed.

"We are not sure on that yet, it is up to the Preservation Society's insurance company to advise on that.

"We will make sure that whatever debris is there will be removed."

The area where the Kestrel sank was 6 to 7 meters deep and the boat was sitting on the bottom of the marina floor.

Mr Warren said the sinking had come as a surprise and the Preservation Society were just coming to terms with what had happened.

"It is definitely a loss for Auckland and for the Preservation Society."

Passengers jump into the sea as ferry sinks in Bali Strait

PETALING JAYA: A ferry capsized in the strait between the islands of Bali and Java on Friday and TV footage showed passengers standing on its side then jumping into the sea as the boat sank in placid waters.

Official statements about how many people were rescued ranged from 41 to 71.

Didi Hamzar, head of Bali's Search and Rescue Agency, said the ship's manifest listed 51 people on board including 14 crewmen. Passenger boats are frequently overloaded in Indonesia. He told Indonesia's TVOne that 10 people were missing based on the manifest.

Footage broadcast by TVOne showed other ships in the background as the ferry, Tafelia 2, sank in the narrow Bali Strait. It languished on its side before capsizing.

Boats are a popular and relatively cheap form of transportation in the world's largest archipelago nation which spans more than 17,000 islands with a population of 256 million. Sea accidents are common, with safety regulations often poorly enforced.

The ferry was enroute from Gilimanuk port in Bali to Banyuwangi on Java.

A local navy chief Lt. Col. Wahyu Endriawan said a total of 71 people have been rescued without any casualties.

"We cannot yet know whether some were trapped inside the ship which has totally submerged," he told MetroTV. – ANN/The Jakarta Post

How did that happen? Mysterious case of sunken boat in luxury Elizabeth Bay Marina

March 3, 2016 6:27pm

A boat found mysteriously sunken in Elizabeth Bay. Picture: Supplied

INSURANCE investigators are this morning trying to determine how a near-seven metre boat was found submerged just below the surface of the Elizabeth Bay Marina.

Marina manager, Sean Tolkin said it was likely the “very heavy nor’-easterly winds” experienced last night had flipped the boat onto its side, causing water to flood the cabin.

The owner of the 6.7 metre half cabin fishing boat had only purchased it last week.

“He was shocked, we are all shocked,” Mr Tolkin said.

“He just upgraded to a new boat, he has occupied the berth for a while.”

Authorities were alerted to the submerged boat about 6.30pm after residents complained of a strong smell of petrol coming from the marina.

gumaca

Inspector Rodel A. Anda, deputy chief of police of the Gumaca MPS, said the three who drowned were among 63 passengers of “M/B Lady Aime,” navigating from Gumaca Wharf (Salome Port) and heading for Quezon (town) Pier but battered by a strong wave that destroyed the front part of the hull around 3:30 p.m.

Boat captain Jun Navares, 32, married, and a resident of Quezon town, tried to return to port but the vessel sank quickly, said Anda.

Fishermen who spotted the incident came to the aid of the passengers and four crew members of “M/B Lady Aime,” owned by a certain Ronnie Flores.

The army’s 4th Maneuver Platoon, the Gumaca MPS, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Philippine Coast Guard, and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council also joined the rescue operation.

However, Anda noted that Navares was nowhere to be found during the investigation. (With a report from Francis T. Wakefield)

U.S. Coast Guard boat overturns while on rescue mission in East Rockaway Inlet

February 25, 2016 http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/queens/u-s-coast-guard-boat-ove...

Five Coast Guard officers on a rescue mission ended up becoming the ones in distress early Thursday when their vessel capsized off the Rockaways during a massive storm, officials said.

The 25-foot Response Boat Small was buffeted by 10- to 12-foot waves before flipping over in the East Rockaway Inlet about 5 a.m.

The five seamen aboard swam to shore near Beach 19th St., a Coast Guard spokesman said. Their vessel ultimately washed up on a nearby beach.

The seamen were treated at the scene. No injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard vessel had been dispatched to rescue the members of the Carolina Queen III, a 76-foot scallop fishing boat from Virginia.

The boat had been on an eight-day fishing excursion when it lost power and began taking on water about 2 a.m., officials said.

The crew of seven managed to bail out the water but later radioed for help when the boat ran aground near the East Rockaway Inlet.

All seven fisherman were airlifted by U.S. Coast Guard helicopter to shore near Beach 56th Pl. in Arverne unharmed, officials said.
“Nothing about this really was routine,” FDNY Fire Chief George Healy said. “This was a very treacherous operation.”

The waters off the Rockaways were under a gale warning Wednesday night as 34 mile-per-hour winds buffeted the area.

“FDNY had some marine resources coming and because of the conditions, we actually had to turn them back for their safety,” Healy said. “A U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer went in the water and he couldn’t even handle the conditions.”

Cargo Ship Sinks Off Central Vietnam

Vietnam Isolated Incident // Boat Accident
HANOI -- Authorities said the cargo ship "Ha Tien 1" began sinking after taking in water in the engine room amid stormy weather about 38 nautical miles north off the city of Da Nang.

The crew members failed to pump out the water and shut off the vessel's flooded compartment. All the sailors abandoned the sinking ship and issued a distress signal to local officials.

A rescue ship was dispatched to the scene and spotted a life raft with 20 crewmen from the Ha Tien 1. All the Vietnamese sailors disembarked in Da Nang without any serious injuries.

The coast guard tried to salvage the vessel, but the harsh weather in the region disrupted the operations. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

Lake City man found dead, another missing after capsizing boat at Santee

Published: February 22, 2016, 12:04 pm

MANNING, S.C. (AP) – One man is dead and another is missing after their boat capsized on Lake Marion.

Captain Robert McCullough of the Department of Natural Resources tells media outlets the DNR received the call about the incident Sunday afternoon. He says two men had been fishing on Lake Marion when something happened to the boat, causing it to sink. The men ended up in the water.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office says the two men were from Lake City.

Other boaters tried to throw a life jacket to one of the men, but he ultimately went under the water. Boaters were able to pull the other man into their boat and attempted CPR, but they weren’t able to revive him.

McCullough says the DNR is still searching the lake for the first man. Investigators are looking into what caused the boat to capsize.
