In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

Boaters rescued after capsize during tornado warning in Terrebonne Parish, Sheriff's Office says

Published  5:42 PM CDT Apr 01, 2016

TERREBONNE PARISH, La. —Two boaters were rescued after their vessel capsized in Lake Junop on Friday during a tornado warning in Terrebonne Parish, the Sheriff's Office said.

About 1:30 p.m., the Sheriff's Office said it received a distress call from the two boaters.

The duo, both from the Dularge area, were aboard a 32-foot-long oyster fishing boat when a "tornado quickly approached them," according to the Sheriff's Office.

"The tornado caused their boat to flip and partially sink," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release. "Water patrol deputies responded to the call and quickly located the two adult males."

The men were found standing on top of the partially sunken vessel. They were both rescued and no injuries were reported.

Police Officer 1 Noel Calmante said rescue boats from the Philippine Coast Guard based in this province and the Rapu-Rapu Municipal Police Station (MPS) were quick to come to the aid of the sinking “M/B St. Therese” at 2:29 p.m.

However, its boat operator – Teodolo Agarin – suffered an apparent heart attack and died while the boat was sinking.

“Ayon po sa aming initial investigation, may tumamang matigas sa may makina nung bangka at nabutas yung body nito at saka pinasok nung tubig (Based on our initial investigation, a hard object struck the engine and punctured a hole in the hull so the boat took in water),” Calmante said.

He said the boat was not overloaded since its capacity is for 150 passengers and it only had 93 passengers plus 12 crew members when it left the Port of Legazpi.

Rogue Wave Causes SFFD Training Boat To Capsize, Four Hospitalized

A San Francisco Fire Department training vessel, Rescue Boat 1, was overturned by a single rogue wave Saturday morning, throwing seven firefighters into the surf. As ABC 7 reports, the situation turned quickly scary despite the fact that the firefighters were all experienced swimmers, and four firefighters were taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia and minor injuries. One remained there overnight.

San Francisco Deputy Fire Chief Mark Gonzales says that conditions started out pretty calm for the 30-foot boat. "Conditions were calm, as I understand it. What I do understand there was a big wave that came up, what some might call a rogue wave came and flipped the boat," he tells the station.

According to KRON 4, "Good Samaritans in fishing boats rescued two firefighters," and "Two others were able to swim ashore and rescuers with the fire department helped the remaining three."

Nearly 60 New York students treated after crew boats capsize

Thursday, March 24, 2016 6:41 am | Updated: 7:09 am, Thu Mar 24, 2016.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) — Emergency officials say nearly 60 high school students have been treated after their crew boats capsized in high winds on a frigid New York river.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports the boats turned over around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday during a practice on the Hudson River near the city of Poughkeepsie, about 70 miles north of New York City.

Officials say 57 students were evaluated and provided warmth due to their exposure to the cold water. Five students were taken to a hospital.

Authorities say the calm river turned rough after winds picked up, causing several boats to capsize. Students were pulled from the river by coaches in nearby boats.

The incident happened during a practice involving multiple schools.

Boat capsizes and sinks in Dartmouth

Thursday, 10 March 2016

  • The St Christophe I lies submerged in Dartmouth harbour.

A FRENCH fishing vessel capsized and sank after seeking shelter in Dartmouth harbour late on Wednesday night.

Dart Harbour Master Rob Giles said a multi agency response was put together to try and save the vessel, St Christophe I, but to no avail.

All five of the crew, all French nationals, are safe and unhurt.

A safety boom has been rigged around the vessel which lies on her starboard side on the sea bed next to her berth at South Embankment.

Capt Giles said the vessel had a considerable amount of diesel fuel on board – between 10 – 15,000 litres - and the most the most pressing concern now was removing fuel from the boat.

She has also become a hazard to navigation and Capt Giles said DHNA was working to have the vessel removed as soon as possible in partnership with the owners and their insurers.

He said the causes of the capsize and sinking were unknown and an investigation would be held into the matter.

Three fishermen rescued from sinking boat off Galveston South Jetty

A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew rescued three fisherman after their boat began sinking early Sunday morning near the jetty off Galveston.

Crewmembers of the shrimp boat Jana Lynn called Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders via VHF-FM channel 16 at around 3 a.m., reporting their boat was taking on water.

Watchstanders launched a Station Galveston 45-foot response boat crew, who quickly retrieved the men before the situation got worse. They reported that their dewatering pumps lost power and they maneuvered the boat on the jetty to keep it from sinking.

Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Texas City pollution responders continue monitoring the situation and have seen no sign of leakage from the 3,000 gallons of marine diesel aboard the boat. Contractors are scheduled to attempt salvage operations as soon as weather permits, which may be Thursday or later.
