What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.

Underground water flows eat away the limestone leaving vast caverns and caves, which often give scant indication above ground that a cavern lies below. Karst limestone rock formations have been mapped and are known, however, but since one never knows just where a cavern might have formed, this provides little help in predicting just where a sinkhole might form. Sinkholes open up when the rock is fractured due to stress from being in the stretch zone, from the bending of a plate, or due to torsion."

Back Alley Sinkhole in Saskatchewan Snares 2 Vehicles (Apr 23)
A truck was nearly swallowed by a massive sinkhole in Saskatoon on Wednesday just hours after a car got stuck in a much smaller hole.
The truck fell into the hole, located in a back alley at 1818 Lorne Ave., around 4 p.m.
“You’re going down a back alley, there are puddles everywhere, you don’t expect to lose half your truck,” said Robyn Chatlain, a neighbour who captured several pictures of the truck.
Her boyfriend’s vehicle hit the same hole six hours earlier at 10 a.m. The sinkhole was much smaller at the time his vehicle fell in.
“It just looked like a puddle,” said Chris Cole, Chatlain’s boyfriend.
Cole’s car didn’t sustain nearly as much damage as the truck.
“My wheel well was cracked,” he said. “Nothing too bad on mine, but his was pretty damaged.”
Both vehicles were removed by tow trucks.

ROAD COLLAPSE LEAVES LORRY STUCK IN A HOLE ON UPPER CHANGI ROAD EAST

"At about 8.30am on 24 April, a depression appeared at the centre lane of Upper Changi Road East (in direction towards Expo).
"A tipper truck that was passing tilted into the hole. The driver was not injured and there were no other injuries.
"To ensure the safety of motorists, two lanes were immediately closed to traffic while the truck was recovered.
"Traffic has been diverted and LTA has deployed traffic wardens to guide traffic flow. LTA is currently carrying out reinstatement works.
"LTA is investigating the incident. We will also continue to monitor underground construction works in the surrounding area.
"This incident is not expected to impact the construction progress of the Downtown Line 3."
This morning at around 8:45am a lorry fell into a sink hole on Upper Changi Road East near the Jalan Demak.
The road suddenly collapsed as a large tipper truck was driving in the centre lane.
The road was subsequently blocked off and a huge traffic jam was experienced along the road toward Singapore Expo.
There are no reports of injuries and the driver was safely able to get out of his truck. However, the driver, Mr Su, explained that once the truck fell with the road, it could no longer move.
The SCDF arrived and taped off the road and later, another truck was brought in to take the soil out of the tipper truck so that it could be pulled out of the hole.
It is understood that the sink hole occurred on a section of road where digging was occurring under the road for the construction of the Downtown line.

Giant Sinkhole in Central Florida is Back After Being Filled with Concrete (Apr 23)
A sinkhole at a retirement community in central Florida is back with a vengeance and threatening two homes, reports say.
The ground outside a home in The Villages showed signs of stress in January — and after a bout of rain last week, the ground collapsed on Saturday revealing a giant hole in the ground.
A private contractor, Helicon Properties, celebrated with fanfare after filling the hole with concrete on Sunday.
"No one will ever know a sinkhole was there," Meredith Tucker, one of the contractors, told the Orlando Sentinel, but three days later, the ground collapsed again.
The latest hole in the ground was discovered by a person on an early morning walk, reported The Village News. The hole is now about 65 feet wide and about 70 feet deep.
Residents in The Villages retirement community have their bags packed and ready to go in case the ground gives out entirely.
"We don't know if we are going to have to go or what," said Rich Corr, who lives next to one of the endangered homes, told the newspaper.
No evacuation has been ordered, but in case the sinkhole spreads, Corr and his wife have already packed their bags, he said.
The homes on the edge of the sinkhole have not collapsed and, thankfully, no one is currently living in the homes at this time, according to an Orlando television station, WESH-TV.
The next step is to fill the hole with more dirt and see if it gets any bigger, the contractors told the TV station.

Mistley: Sinkhole opens up at Mistley Quay, Essex, UK

Work is under way to repair a sinkhole which has suddenly appeared at an historic quay in north-east Essex.
The large hole opened up at Mistley Quay at around 2pm yesterday, said a spokesman for T W Logistics, the distribution firm that owns the quay.
She said: “We are currently investigating an apparent sinkhole that has appeared.
“We will be undertaking a full assessment over the coming days.”
The spokesman would not be drawn on what vehicles or equipment may have fallen in the sinkhole.
But when asked to comment on reports a driver of a fork-lift truck had been taken to hospital, she said she “had not heard anything about that”.
The dimensions of the sinkhole have not been disclosed.

Massive Sinkhole Threatens Orlando Florida Homes, Residents Evacuated (Apr 19)
Two houses in The Villages area are in danger after a huge sinkhole opened up between them.
The houses are on Chalmer Terrace, near St. Charles Place. One home was evacuated.
“It’s about 25-30 feet across at the surface and we’re estimating between 40 and 60 feet deep,” said geologist Drew Glasbrenner.
All night long crews have been bringing in trucks, one after the other, as they work to fill a massive sinkhole here that opened up without warning Saturday morning.
Giovanni Velocci said his day started with his morning walk.
"This morning I got out about 20 to seven, everything looked normal," Velocci said.
But in the 1.5 hours he was gone, the massive sinkhole opened up right across the street from his home.
When I came back about 8:25, the tree that was next to the house, I don’t see no tree and I thought somebody stole the tree,” Velocci said.
Velocci called the fire department and then noticed that a man was inside the home right next to the sinkhole.
"There was somebody inside the house, I went to see him. He said he had no water," Velocci said. "I said you gotta get out of the house because something is wrong here."

Phil Tester, owner of The Laurels in Oakamoor, said the large hole opened up on Thursday morning and now measured more than 10 feet wide and was continuing to expand.
Deep water has gathered at the bottom of the sinkhole, making it difficult to measure the full size of the chasm.

A sink hole that opened up next to a Bed and Breakfast in north Staffordshire has been filled in.
The hole first appeared outside The Laurels, in Oakamoor, on Thursday morning and grew to more than three metres (10 ft) wide.
It followed drilling work at the property last week to check damage caused by a nearby landslide last year.
B&B owner Phil Tester said the hole had now been filled in with about 140 tonnes of rock.
Specialists in mine shaft work are expected to inject the rocks with concrete, before laying a concrete cap on the top.
The hole was more than 10ft (3m) wide
Despite the work completed, Mr Tester said the business was not expected to reopen until October.
The sink hole is one of a series of set-backs suffered at the property since a landslip in the area in December.

Anastasia Tatarnikov, 28, thought she was running from an earthquake in the city of Ridder in eastern Kazakhstan.
In total 120 homes have been listed as being at risk and 480 people have been evacuated.
Several homes including Ms Tatarnikova's have completely vanished into the hole.
'I was watching TV and then it started flickering and the lights started swinging. I opened the front door and saw a massive pit appearing in the ground,' she said.
'I ran back into the house and grabbed my son Kiril out of his cot and ran out through the back door. Seconds later the entire house disappeared into the hole.
'I still can't believe that I have lost everything. I don't have any of the official paperwork from my passport through to my son's hospital documents, with his toys and all our clothes. Everything is gone.'
She said local officials had promised to help with rehousing and covering the loss of everything, but so far nothing had happened.

A portion of a central Ohio road will remain closed for the foreseeable future because of a large sinkhole that opened late Thursday night. The 20 ft.-30 ft. sinkhole destroyed a chunk of S. York Road between Morse and Wesleyan Church Road near Pataskala. A representative from the Licking County Engineer's Office began examining the damage at approximately 7 a.m. Friday, when heavy rain finally subsided after falling consistently in the area since Thursday morning. Officials believe that rainfall, combined with wear and tear caused from winter weather as well as the road's position above a creek, likely caused the collapse. A timetable for the repair of the road has not been established.

Sinkhole 'Big Enough to Swallow Doubledecker' Opens in Somerset England (Apr 1)
A pub landlord made a shocking discovery this morning when he took his dog out for a walk.
Mike Parkin, landlord at The Inn at Freshford, in Somerset, describes the hole as 'big enough to swallow a double decker bus', saying he discovered it while out walking his dog this morning. But he believes the sinkhole must have opened up over night in the early hours, as he didn’t hear anything.
Mike has confirmed that nobody has been harmed and fortunately, no vehicles had been left in the pub’s car park overnight.
“We’ve already got experts on the scene, who have confirmed that no nearby buildings, structures or roads are at risk.
Efforts toward repairing the 30ft wide hole have already begun, and emergency services have deemed the pub safe to open for business as usual today.
Mike added:
“I’m completely baffled by this."
Freshford resident April O'Lof said: "It is really shocking - you don't expect to see this sort of thing happening in Freshford".
