It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail. The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur. This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift. In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Train derails near Central City

CENTRAL CITY — An eastbound Union Pacific train headed from California to Chicago derailed near Central City at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

“There were no injuries,” said Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis. “The cause of the derailment is under investigation.”

All 42 cars that went off the tracks were flat cars loaded with ocean-going containers. Those containers had everything from electronics to batteries to apparel and other consumer goods loaded in them, Davis said.

“Crews worked throughout the night to move the rail cars off the tracks and to begin repairs,” Davis said.

Both tracks there were damaged. A total of 800 feet of rail had to be replaced on one track and 2,000 feet of rail needed to be replaced on the other, he said.

One track was expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Sunday. It’s unknown when the second track will reopen, Davis said.

As of late Sunday afternoon, 20 trains had been detoured to other routes around the damage. Another 40 trains sat idle waiting for the tracks to clear, he said.

The derailment occurred at Highway 30 and 21st Street.

Virginia train derailment 

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A CSX train derailed in Southampton County early Thursday morning, injuring a conductor and engineer and sparking a fire.

Maj. Gene Drewery with the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a call from CSX that a train derailed between the Dominion Power Plant and the Ashland Chemical Plant around 2:30 a.m.

Drewery said the train was slowing into the chemical plant when it derailed. There was a diesel fuel spill, but there was not a chemical spill. Two locomotives and nine cars were involved.

The crash also caused a large fire, which Drewery said spread to trees along the side of the tracks, but was later contained.

An engineer and a conductor were transported from the scene with injuries. "They were disoriented, our officers just opened the door and helped them get out of the train and get off because of the fire," Drewery said. One was treated at Southampton Memorial Hospital, and the other was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. They were released from the hospital Thursday.

Donald Case said he used to work for CSX and drove from Richmond to check on the crash. "It's a bad one. I mean the pictures I saw on the news this morning looked pretty rough. So I rode down there to see if I could see anything," Case said.

Case said he knows the two men who were on the train, and was thankful they were not seriously hurt. "They really are lucky. They could have been killed real easy," Case said.

The train is made up of 41 cars which were carrying mixed freight. The train originated in Portsmouth and was en route to Rocky Mount, N.C.

It was not clear Thursday afternoon when the track would reopen. Investigators said it could take weeks to determine the cause of the derailment.

Eight cars of a CP Rail train derailed Wednesday at a rail yard in southeast Calgary.

The derailment occurred at a track along 19 Ave. and 15 Street in the Aylth railroads.

Company spokesman Ed Greenberg says there were no injuries and there was no leakage from the cars, which are lying on their sides at the Alyth Yard.

The cars were carrying a diluting agent used in oil pipelines.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said there was briefly a small evacuation of the immediate area but everyone has since been allowed to return home.

He said Blackfoot Trail, a major commuter route, would be closed overnight but crews were working to ensure it could be reopened by morning.

Evacuations took place between 13th and 15th street south of 9th Avenue.

Calgary Police Service Duty Inspector Leah Barber told CTV Calgary several tanker cars left the rail, before coming to a rest on their side.

Barber also said there are reports a hissing noise could be heard coming from several cars.

The derailment also closed 15 Street between 9 Ave., according to 660 News.

CP Rail official Ed Greenberg told CTV Calgary the derailment occurred while a northbound train was leaving the Alyth yard at 4:55 p.m.

Greenberg says the north-bound train was moving at a slow speed when the cars left the tracks Wednesday afternoon.

He says the company has launched an investigation to determine what happened.

DURBAN - A goods train has derailed near Margate on KwaZulu-Natal’s south coast.

Netcare 911 says it was travelling towards Durban, and derailed near Banana Beach.

Some of the coaches landed in the lagoon under the bridge the train was travelling on.

The cause of the derailment is not yet known.

Paramedics say the units were empty and no one was injured.

The railway track was completely destroyed and has been closed indefinitely.

Mexican cargo train used by migrants derails, killing at least 5

A freight train derailed in a remote area of the Mexican state of Tabasco early Sunday, killing at least five people and injuring at least 35 others, according to officials.

Of the injured, 16 people were seriously hurt, according to a tweet from Luis Felipe Puente, national coordinator for Mexico’s Civil Protection branch of the Secretariat of the Interior.

Local media reports said the death toll could be as high as 50, but that figure was not immediately confirmed by Mexican authorities.

The freight train, known as “La Bestia” — “The Beast” — crisscrosses Mexico from south to north. Migrants, primarily Central Americans, seeking illegal passage to the United States often jump aboard the train under the cover of darkness.

The train company and emergency crews were dispatching two cranes to help search for an undetermined number of victims trapped among the eight cars of the derailed train, officials told The Associated Press.

Federal and state authorities were at the scene, according to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, who tweeted his sympathies Sunday afternoon.

“My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident,” the tweet said.

The derailment reportedly occurred in a rural area near Huimanguillo in the southeastern state of Tabasco around 3am local time (4am ET) Sunday, near the border with the Mexican state of Veracruz, which is difficult to reach by vehicle.

At least 250 migrants were apparently on the train traveling north from the Guatemala border, Tabasco state Civil Protection chief Cesar Burelo Burelo told the AP.

All of the dead are non-Mexican and from different Central American nations, officials said.

The locomotive and the first car apparently did not overturn in the accident, and were later used to transport victims to the nearest medical facility in Veracruz, according to the AP.

Hard rainfall had evidently loosened the earth under the tracks and shifted the rails, officials told the AP.

Burelo told the AP eight cars had derailed, but authorities have yet to determine a cause.

Soldiers, marines and civilian emergency workers were attempting to enter the area, which ambulances could not access, the Red Cross told the AP. Officials were working to set up air or water links to the scene of the fatal derailment.

Train Derails in Minidoka County

MINIDOKA • A train partially derailed Sunday morning in Minidoka County near 800 East Road and Idaho 24 outside of Minidoka.
Eleven cars from the 63-car train left the tracks at 11:20 a.m. Sunday.
No one was injured, and no crossings were blocked, said Minidoka County Sheriff Eric Snarr.
The cause of the derailment had not been determined, Snarr said, but the engineer and conductor thought the train was dragging something when it reached the switch, causing those cars to catch and leave the tracks.
Cars were scattered on both sides of the tracks, and one tipped over and spilled lye, he said.
The train was en route from Salt Lake City to Oregon, said Union-Pacific Railroad spokesman Aaron Hunt.
One of the derailed cars was an empty tanker that usually carries anhydrous ammonia.
“That was definitely the car we were most focused on,” said Hunt.
The other cars were carrying mixed freight, including lumber, grain and potash.
“None of those spilled,” he said.
Union-Pacific has 800 miles of track and 1,000 employees in Idaho, Hunt said.
The clean-up process is now up to Union-Pacific Railroad. Snarr said law enforcement and fire department personnel left the scene within a few hours.

Train Carrying Consumer Products Derails Near Waynoka

WAYNOKA, Oklahoma -

Emergency crews are on the scene of a train derailment near Waynoka, Oklahoma, Sunday morning. 

At about 7:30 a.m. a BNSF train carrying consumer products derailed in the area of NS 330 and Comanche Rd., about two miles north and one mile east of Waynoka. The train was heading westbound to Los Angeles at the time.

Authorities say the train was going 56 mph when it derailed. The speed limit is 60 mph.

First responders on the scene say a total of 40 trailers of the train derailed, spilling beer and soda cans, as well as paper rolls all over the railway.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. (BNSF) is in charge of cleaning up the scene. The train was carrying "mixed freight," according to Joe Faust, Director of Public Relations for BNSF.

No injuries have been reported. The town of Waynoka was not evacuated, according to Woods County Sheriff Rudy Briggs Jr.

Faust says no roads or highways in the area were shut down as a result of the derailment. The railroad is expected to be back open 2 p.m. Monday.

Express train derails in Thailand

An express train derailed today in a 382m-long tunnel while heading for northern Thai tourist town of Chiang Mai with 415 passengers on board, many of them foreigners. 

Nobody was hurt in the accident at 3 am (local time) which has blocked all Bangkok- and Chiang Mai-bound trains. 

The Chiang Mai-bound special express train derailed in the 382m-long tunnel between Ban Pang Ton Phueng station in Muang district of Uttaradit province and Huay Rai station of Phrae's Den Chai district, Poonsawat Im-emchai, the chief of Sila-at railway station, said. 

Several buses were arranged for the passengers to proceed with their trips to Chiang Mai and other destinations. 

Deteriorated condition of the rail tracks was believed to cause the derailment, Bangkok Post said. 

On June 17, a Bangkok-Chiang Mai express train had derailed.

Train Derails in La., About 50 Homes Evacuated

LAWTELL, La. August 5, 2013 (AP)

A train carrying flammable and corrosive materials derailed in Louisiana on Sunday and about 50 homes have been evacuated as a precaution, authorities said.

Master Trooper Daniel "Scott" Moreau said three cars were leaking but the amount is so small air pollution detectors have not picked up anything. Authorities have not reported any injuries.

The evacuated homes were within one mile of the derailment. Police said at least 26 cars went off the tracks about 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Latwell, which is about 60 miles west of Baton Rouge.

Gov. Bobby Jindal was expected to talk to reporters Sunday night.

The Union Pacific train had 76 cars, and some of them held lube oil and vinyl chloride, KATC-TV reported (http://bit.ly/14Xi9NA).

Traffic was being diverted away from the evacuation zone. Moreau says it's not clear how long the evacuation will last.
