It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail. The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur. This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift. In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Train derailment causes travel chaos

Railway passengers are currently stranded at many railways stations due to a derailment of a train that had occurred between the Maradana and Fort railway stations today.

Speaking to The Nation, officials at the Maradana Railway Station said even though the derailed train has just now been cleared only one out of four railway lines are currently under operation, causing a major disruption and delays in train services during after office hours.

Train services on Chittagong route resume after six-hour halt

Rail communications on the Chittagong route have resumed six hours after a train derailed at Sitakunda on Tuesday morning.

Two Dhaka-bound trains left Chittagong Railway Station after one side of the tracks was cleared around 11am, Station Master Abul Kalam Azad told bdnews24.com.

Inter-city ‘Bijoy Express’ hit a trailer truck, stranded on the tracks, at Barhbkunda in the morning, killing one person.

The engine and four coaches of the train, which was coming from Mymensingh, derailed, snapping Chittagong’s rail links with the rest of the country.

Four trains were stranded at the Chittagong Railway Station while five more, coming to the port city, were forced to stop at stations at that time.

The situation forced many passengers at the Chittagong station to make alternative arrangements to travel to their destinations.

Railway’s East Zone Divisional Manager Mofizur Rahman said one of the two tracks had been cleared.

“It’ll take about a day to clear the other track,” he told bdnews24.com.

Goods train derail in Kathua, disrupts rail traffic

KATHUA (J&K): Three bogies of a goods train derailed here this morning leading to disruption of traffic on the Jammu-Pathankote railway route.

The train was on its way from Delhi to Jammu and derailed soon after crossing the Kathua railway station, a police officer said.

"Three bogies of the good train derailed, and there was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the accident as the train was moving at a slow pace," he said.

Several trains on the Jammu-Pathankote railway line had to be stopped at several places following the derailment of the goods train, he said.

Senior DGM Jammu RN Mina along with technical team reached the spot to restore the railway traffic, he said.

The incident took place early in the morning and the reason seems to be a technical snag.

Crews are working to remove a train that derailed Monday afternoon in Spring.

Six cargo cars ended up just feet away from spilling into the 2600 block of West Hardy.

Grain was tossed everywhere, and the rear locomotive car was left on its side, leaking diesel. Officials say the engineer wasn't hurt.

"As I look at the caboose, it is like wobbling," Watson said.

That wobble quickly turned into a tumble.

"It was going it just like dominoes effect," she said.

Sources close to the investigation say Union Pacific is looking into wether excessive heat caused the tracks to expand.

Crews now working into the night, cleaning up and hoping to get things back on track by morning.

India floods derail trains, killing 21 people, as focus turns to safety

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Two express trains derailed into a river in central India overnight after flood water weakened the tracks, killing 21 people, state officials said on Wednesday, reigniting criticism about lack of safety on the world's fourth-largest rail network.

Divers using gas cutters pulled out trapped passengers and 300 had been rescued by early morning, officials said. Dozens were rushed to hospital.

Twelve coaches of the Kamayani Express to Varanasi from Mumbai derailed near Harda in the central state of Madhya Pradesh just before midnight. Six coaches of the Janata Express derailed around the same time, the railway ministry said.

"The prima facie cause of the incident is stated to be flash floods due to heavy rains," Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu told parliament.

Heavy monsoon rains and the tail-end of a cyclone have killed more than 100 people across India in flooding, landslides and building collapses in recent days.

But a former railway minister said if the tracks had been maintained, the accidents could have been avoided.

"It's totally unacceptable. It's a symptom of a deep-rooted cancer in the railway system," Dinesh Trivedi told reporters.

Train wrecks killed more than 25,000 people on India's overloaded and outdated railway network last year alone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi this year massively increased spending to modernize the network, but improvements will take years.

The head of the railway board, A.K. Mittal, told reporters a flash flood struck the area just minutes before the trains came through, disturbing the tracks. "Ten minutes back at this spot, train movement was normal. There was no problem."

Television images showed train coaches smashed into each other and tilted into the river. Some police and villagers had clambered on top of the coaches lying on their side.

"It shook like a tree in storm. We thought something had hit the train," said Santosh Singh, a passenger.

India's state-run railway network, the fourth largest after the United States, China and Russia, carries some 23 million passengers each day. "The two train accidents in Madhya Pradesh are deeply distressing. Deeply pained over the loss of lives," Modi tweeted.

JOHANNESBURG - A train derailed between Booysens and Crown Mines stations, leaving approximately 150 passengers injured.
According to ER24's Russel Meiring, "What we know so far is unconfirmed. We believe two trains collided at Booysen train station at Johannesburg, causing one to derail.

"We responded and on our arrival we found more than 100 patients. As far as we know, there are no fatalities. Most of the injures are moderate to minor, including some serious patients."

ER24 paramedics are treating neck and back injuries as well as major and minor fractures. Injured passengers are being taken to nearby hospitals.

Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said,”We can confirm that the accident happened, it happened over an hour ago.”
“Rescue vehicle and personnel are on the scene. They are helping over a hundred people lying on the platform, with minor to serious injuries,” said Meiring.

Metrorail says it’s too early to say what caused the accident. The company has arranged buses to ferry commuters meant to be using the same route.

CN says several cars on an intermodal train have derailed near Bowmanville, Ont

A CN freight train derailed near Bowmanville, Ont., at 2:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, causing Via Rail to suspend its trains in both directions between Toronto and Ottawa, as well as Toronto and Montreal, for the rest of the day.

Via Rail said service is expected to resume Sunday morning.

Canadian National Railway spokesman Jim Feeny told CBC News the cars were on a westbound train. He said there do not appear to be any injuries. Seven cars were affected by the derailment and are blocking rail infrastructure. It is not known what the cars were carrying. 

Via said it is organizing alternate transportation for passengers who were already en route aboard trains. For all other people travelling Saturday evening, the trains are cancelled.

Bowmanville is near Oshawa, and about 63 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

Crude oil train derails in rural northeastern Montana

A mixed-freight train derailed in eastern Montana Tuesday evening, pausing Amtrak’s Empire Builder rail service and stranding travelers, reports the Williston Herald.

The westbound train contained 106 loaded crude oil tank cars and two buffer cars loaded with sand. Twenty-two cars derailed. Of those derailed cars, two remain upright.

Firefighters who responded to the derailment with the Culbertson Fire Department had completed hazardous materials training about a month ago due to the increase in oil shipments and other rail traffic in the area, said volunteer firefighter Travis Northington.

Roosevelt County Sheriff Jason Frederick tells The Billings Gazette that authorities have evacuated some homes within a mile of the derailment. No injuries were reported in that derailment.

He says a BNSF hazardous materials team was flying in from Texas. Oil tankers also derailed near Casselton, N.D., in December 2013, causing a massive fireball and the voluntary evacuation of the town. They had not arrived yet at 11 p.m. “It’s very unfortunate”. The derailed cars are being evaluated for any possible compromises.

Jones says the tracks were expected to re-open on Thursday afternoon.

Tuesday’s derailment disrupted Amtrak service between Whitefish, Mont., and Minneapolis, and the sheriff said he expects more delays are likely.

Bakken oil train derails in eastern Montana - second derailment on line this week

CULBERTSON, MT. (KFGO-AM) - A westbound BNSF train carrying oil derailed in northeast Montana Thursday evening, about 50 miles west of Williston.

It happened several hours after the tracks reopened from another train derailment that happened Tuesday in the same area.

Roosevelt County Public Information Officer Lee Almer says the train contained 100 cars. 22 derailed, 21 are on their side, and several were leaking.

He says the area is remote but as a precaution, an area in a one-and-a-half mile radius of the derailment was evacuated.

There were no injuries and no fires have been reported

At least five rail cars derailed from the first train after it was hit from behind by a second NS train. The first train had three locomotives and 54 rail cars. Five empty cars at the end of that train derailed.

The second train had two locomotives and 43 empty rail cars used as auto racks for carrying vehicles. Norfolk Southern says the locomotive on that train derailed and there is a diesel fuel spill.

Two crew members on the second train were taken to the hospital.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, according to Norfolk Southern.

Three homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Homes briefly evacuated after train derails near Ebenezer

Twelve homes were evacuated Friday after a CN train derailed just north of Yorkton.

A dozen rail cars jumped the tracks near Ebenezer, Sask. around 1:50 p.m. Four of the cars were carrying liquid sulfur; seven were carrying cement, and one was empty.

A CN Rail spokesperson told CTV News that some liquid sulfur leaked.

No one was injured, according to RCMP, but a dozen homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Residents were allowed back in their homes late Friday evening.

Some roads were blocked in the area as CN police investigated.

Crews were still cleaning the spill and repairing the track on Saturday. A CN spokesperson expected the track to re-open later in the day.
