WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.

Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.

Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.

He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.

Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.

The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."

"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."

She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.

"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.

With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline

04/06/2017

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.

It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING

http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.

What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

Menai Bridge closure will have 'huge' impact on UK, says MP

Menai Bridge with closure signage

The 200-year-old Menai Bridge was closed with immediate effect on Friday due to safety concerns

Closing a historic suspension bridge linking Anglesey with the mainland should "not have been allowed to happen", says the island's MP.

The Menai Bridge was closed immediately on Friday for up to 16 weeks over "serious" safety risks.

It led to gridlock on the only other crossing to Anglesey, which is the main freight route to Ireland.

Virginia Crosbie, Conservative MP for Ynys Mon, said it will have a "huge impact" for the whole of the UK.

She said urgent questions about the bridge will be raised in both the Senedd and the UK Parliament.

"This is a huge impact not only on Anglesey, but for the whole of the UK in terms of our infrastructure," said Ms Crosbie.

"We'll be writing a letter together to Mark Drakeford to really find out what on earth has gone wrong. Why did we not have any notice regarding this, and what is the plan going forward?"

She added that she wanted a plan from the Welsh government on how to ensure people will be able to get across to the island or to Bangor and Gwynedd safely.

"I'm looking to ensure that some of the key workers that work at Ysbyty Gwynedd can actually go to the hospital," she added.

"And want a plan to ensure that my constituents can get have access to an ambulance, should they need one, so we need to have a plan of action."

On Friday Deputy Minister for Climate Change Lee Waters said that "urgent" and "unavoidable" work on the bridge was being carried out for public safety.

Huge 485ft wood and steel bridge crashes down into Norwegian river just ten years after opening with drivers somehow surviving the 'catastrophic' collapse as they crossed

The immense bridge made of wood and steel was built just a decade ago, but two vehicles fell as it collapsed earlier today

  • Nearby houses shake as huge lorry nearly falls into river when bridge collapsed in Norway during rush hour
  • A helicopter was needed to pull the truck driver out of his vehicle, with another car driver able to climb out
  • The bridge opened in 2012 and was inspected just last year, raising fears other crossings could be vulnerable
  • One resident said: 'The house shook. I rolled up the blinds [...] and looked right at a bridge laying in the river'

The driver of the car (pictured perched just above the rapidly flowing river) was able to climb out of his car and to safety

A 485ft-long bridge made of wood and steel in Norway collapsed during rush hour this morning, sending a lorry and a car plunging toward the water below.

Police were called just after 7.30am local time to attend the fallen Tretten Bridge, central Norway, which crosses the Gudbrandsdalslaagen River.

Both drivers were rescued and doing well, police said.

A helicopter was needed to pull the lorry driver out of his sunken vehicle, which sat in an almost vertical position on a collapsed section of the bridge raised at an angle out of the water.

The driver of the car managed to get out of his vehicle and climb to safety by himself.

The nearly 150 metre-long bridge connects the west bank of the Gudbrandsdalslaagen River and the village of Tretten.

The bridge is just a decade old, having opened in 2012.

Local authority workers look on as the river flows violently into the fallen, 485ft-long bridge in central Norway today

'It is completely catastrophic, completely unreal,' mayor Jon Halvor Midtmageli told newspaper Dabgladet.

'It is also a fairly new bridge.

'It is completely destroyed, everything has fallen down,' he added.

The Norwegian Automobile Federation said the bridge was last checked in 2021, raising concern about the safety of such bridges.

'We who travel on the roads must be able to trust that the bridges are safe to drive on,' the organisation's spokeswoman Ingunn Handagard told the Norwegian news agency NTB.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration demanded an independent investigation.

Dramatic video shows collapse at iconic Arecibo Observatory

Dec 2 2020

(20) CBS News on Twitter: "Watch the moment the iconic Arecibo Obse...

Dramatic video released Thursday shows the catastrophic failure of a support cable and the subsequent 450-foot plunge of a 900-ton lattice-like instrument platform onto the iconic Arecibo radio telescope's huge dish antenna.

"I want to express how deeply saddened we are here," said Ralph Gaume, director of astronomy at the National Science Foundation. "And NSF is very thankful that no one was hurt. As you know, safety has always been and continues to be our top priority."

The National Science Foundation, which operates the Arecibo Observatory through the University of Central Florida, unveiled video of the collapse Thursday during a Zoom update with reporters.

One view, from a camera on the roof of the observatory's control center, showed the instrument platform crashing to Earth, along with the top 60 feet of two reinforced concrete cable support towers that were ripped away. Another view came from a drone stationed just above support Tower 4 where two cables failed on August 10 and November 6.

As the drone's camera looked on, another support cable unraveled and suddenly snapped. An instant later, the support platform began falling toward the dish 45 stories below. The drone operator managed to turn the camera in time to capture the moment of impact and the failures of the other two support towers.

"You can see, I hope, the cables that go from the top of Tower 4 to the platform. ... And so it's those cables that fail near the tower top first. And once those fail, the platform then loses stability and starts to come down."

The Arecibo Observatory was made up of a fixed 1,000-foot dish antenna built into a natural depression that reflected radio waves or radar beams up to the receiver array suspended 450 feet above by cables stretching from three support towers.

While the dish itself only moved with Earth's rotation, the instrument platform featured a steerable receiver pallet that allowed astronomers to observe targets up to 40 degrees away from the telescope's vertical axis.

Operating for more than half a century, the observatory played a significant role observing deep space targets, bodies in the solar system and, at an adjacent facility using powerful lasers, the composition and behavior of Earth's upper atmosphere.

But on August 10, an auxiliary cable pulled free of its socket on support tower 4 and crashed down onto the dish below, ripping a 100-foot-long gash. Engineers were developing repair plans when one of the main 3-inch-wide support cables attached to the same tower unexpectedly snapped on November 6.

Bridge in North Carolina collapses live on air while a reporter stands just feet away

November 13 2020

A section of a bridge in North Carolina collapsed live on air, while a reporter and camera operator stood just a few feet away.

During a newscast for Fox 46 in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Thursday, reporter Amber Roberts was standing on a bridge showing viewers the impact of flooding in the area, according to the New York Post.

Ms Roberts knelt down on the two-lane bridge in Alexander County and showed viewers that amid the torrential rain part of the road was slowly sinking.

“This bridge is literally sinking. Take a look at the ground, you can see it caving in,” she said.

As the camera moved away from Ms Roberts and focused on the flood of running water below, the section of the bridge that the reporter had just been standing on collapsed.

Ms Roberts screamed and exclaimed: “We are backing up, we’re backing up,” as the camera turned back to show a large section of the bridge missing.

“Just right here live on TV, we saw the road collapse. That same road that we were just standing on seconds ago.

“Thank god we are backing up. We are slowly going off of the bridge, we are slowly backing up,” Ms Roberts said, as the camera operator moved off the road.

Neither Ms Roberts or the camera operator were injured during the incident, the reporter later wrote on Twitter.

She said: “I am SO #thankful me and my @FOX46News #photojournalist, @JonMonteFOX46 are okay. I’m sending #prayers up to the people of #Alexander #County impacted by today’s #flooding.”

North Carolina has been hit with heavy rainfall and flash floods over the last few days, as at least three people have died during the torrential rain this week.

The weather is expected to improve on Friday, as the heavy rain moves out of the region.

Kushtia-Haripur bridge on the verge of collapse just in 3 years

Published at 04:31 pm November 2nd, 2020

The residents are worried about losing new blocks every day

The bridge protection dam of Sheikh Russel Kushtia-Haripur Link Bridge is on the brink of collapse, just three years after construction.

The bridge connects Kushtia’s Haripur to its district town. So far, more than 20 rows of 70 blocks along the Madhumati River bank have collapsed, and around 1500 blocks similarly collapsed since the construction.

Upon a visit to the spot this correspondent saw a large hole at the bridge protection dam. Locals are worried that many more blocks will collapse which may eventually lead to the destruction of the bridge.  They also demanded immediate steps for protecting the dam by placing geobags under the blocks.

Visiting, locals pointed out to this correspondent that no geobags have been placed under the blocks, which were placed for protecting the bridge from collapse. The blocks were only placed on a synthetic layer of the sand of the river which caused the collapse of the blocks within three years of the construction of the bridge.

Nearly a month ago, a crack developed at the 100 meter mark of the bridge at Haripur point and since then the concrete blocks are going one after another inside the river, putting the bridge at risk of collapse.

At the same time, the stairs along the banks  of the river, which was made for the people who want to take a swim on the river along 80 meter within the bridge, also collapsed.

According to the sources, the Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) constructed the Sheikh Russel Bridge linking Kushtia-Haripur area in 2017 and opened it for public use.

On December 22, 2013, a contractor firm named Akhtar Associates got the task of constructing the 604 meter long, 6.1 meter wide bridge.

Zahidur Rahman Mandal, executive engineer of LGED, Kushtia, said they have sought the services of a special team to repair the protection dam of the bridge. “But no response has come yet, which caused the delay.”

Asked about why the protection dam collapsed within three years of its construction, Zahidur said “The reason will be known once the special team visits the site.”

Primarily they  suspect that a dredging machine of the local Water Development Board, which remained stranded at the collapsed point for three days, might be the reason for the collapse.

This government official also claimed that geobags have been placed on a two-meter area of the river bed while 1.5 meter area along the dam.

Mohammad Aslam Hossain, deputy commissioner of Kushtia, said the authorities concerned of the Water Development Board and LGED have been asked to take steps to avoid any further damage of the bridge.
