Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) crews assessed damage from a landslide located on the Historic Columbia River Highway (U.S. 30) near Larch Mountain Road.
The area has a history of landslides. Wildfire scars, including damage from the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, combined with heavy rainfall have made slopes along the historic highway unpredictable.
In July, ODOT closed a portion of U.S. 30 west of Crown Point to vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians while crews repaired the “ancient landslide” area. The section reopened in September. ODOT officials said the current slide is between Vista House and the area repaired earlier this summer.
The closure has created an inconvenience for tourists. The roadway is frequently used to access Vista House from the west before continuing east toward Multnomah Falls.
“The scenic view — that’s what we came here for,” said Alexa Escamilla, who was visiting from White Salmon, Washington. “So I was kind of upset that we couldn’t go.”
Instead, visitors must take Interstate 84 eastbound and exit at Bridal Veil to reach Vista House, a detour that can add 25 to 30 minutes to the drive.
Jessica Wang, a first-time Oregon visitor from Beijing, said the additional travel time was no bother.
An ODOT spokesperson told FOX 12 there is no estimate for when the landslide will be cleared.
