The Cayman Trough

" Cayman Trench, also called Bartlett Deep, or Bartlett Trough, is a complex transform fault zone pull apart basin which contains a small spreading ridge on the floor of the western Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.] It is the deepest point in the Caribbean Sea and forms part of the tectonic boundary between the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate. It extends from the Windward Passage, going south of the Sierra Maestra of Cuba toward Guatemala. The transform continues onshore as the Motagua Fault, which cuts across Guatemala and extends offshore under the Pacific Ocean, where it intersects the Middle America Trench subduction zone. The relatively narrow trough trends east-northeast to west-southwest and has a maximum depth of 7,686 metres (25,217 ft). Within the trough is a slowly spreading north-south ridge which may be the result of an offset or gap of approximately 420 kilometres (260 mi) along the main fault trace. The Cayman spreading ridge shows a long-term opening rate of 11–12 mm/yr.[2] The eastern section of the trough has been named the Gonâve Microplate. The Gonâve plate extends from the spreading ridge east to the island of Hispanola. It is bounded on the north by the Oriente and Septentrional fault zones. On the south the Gonâve is bounded by the Walton fault, the Jamaica restraining bend and the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone. The two bounding strike slip fault zones are left lateral. In 2010 a UK team from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton (NOCS), equipped with an autonomously controlled, robot submarine, began mapping the full extent of the trench and discovered black smokers on the ocean floor at a depth of 3.1 miles (5 kilometers), the deepest yet found"

The lands between the south of Mexico and north edge of Columbia will not fare well during the coming pole shift, due to several factors, all of which are essentially fatal to those living there. First, this fragile land mass separates two oceans, which will be heaving to and fro. The water will wash over and nearly wash away the land due to this. Second, the plates under this land are small and will not hold up well under pressure from nearby larger plates, thus will be subducted or fractured. Third, as the Atlantic widens, the Americas will pull apart, leaving the small plates without their normal supports so that they will sink.

Quake monitoring stations on the Atlantic Rift will show that large quakes have occurred in many places along the rift, almost simultaneously. Tsunami buoys are helpful, but primarily it will be ships out to sea who will notice a large and rapidly moving wave. This only gives hours of warning, however. "

The cold that has claimed over 400 deaths in Peru has also affected herds of alpacas in the highlands of the country, where only in the Puno region 480 000 animals are endangered.

That amount represents 25 per cent of the group of this camelid living in the Peruvian region representing for many families their main source of livelihood.
The lack of food and shelter to protect alpacas from these low temperatures, that in some points have reached 23 degrees below zero, worries the alpaca owners of the area, struggling to avoid the humane killing of their animals.
Thus, people must devote constant attention to their animals, which often causes the respiratory diseases of the children to occupy a second level of importance.
"In the field, parents prefer to give more attention to livestock, because that activity generates them the only income to support her family," said the magistrate Hanajquia community, Daniel Calcina.
So far this year 409 people have died as a result of pneumonia associated with low temperatures.
