Meanwhile, on Planet Earth, droughts had become more intractable and deluges positively frightening, temperature swings bringing snow in summer in the tropics and searing heat in Arctic regions, with the violence of storms increasing in number and ferocity."

El Niño has reached an unprecedented level...
The Niño 3.4 region – an area in the tropical Pacific Ocean approximately between 120° and 170° west longitude – recorded an anomaly of +3.22 °C above normal. This is the highest value ever recorded in this zone.
This area is of key importance: scientists use it to assess the strength of El Niño and La Niña. When the water here warms to such levels, it triggers major shifts in atmospheric circulation and affects weather patterns around the globe.
The +3.22 °C reading has already surpassed the previous record of +3.02 °C, set in 2015, despite it only being early October.
