What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.

Karst limestone rock formations have been mapped and are known, however, but since one never knows just where a cavern might have formed, this provides little help in predicting just where a sinkhole might form. Sinkholes open up when the rock is fractured due to stress from being in the stretch zone, from the bending of a plate, or due to torsion."

Sinkhole causes detour near Laporte
A beaver dam, spring runoff and missing riprap may be contributing causes.

Hubbard County Highway Department workers set up barricades Monday after a sinkhole collapsed a lane of County 93 southwest of Laporte

A roughly car-sized sinkhole opened Monday on County 93 in Lakeport Township.
According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, a section of roadway collapsed at one end of a bridge a half-mile east of State Hwy. 64, approximately 2.5 miles southwest of Laporte. The collapse left a large sinkhole in a lane of traffic, making the road impassible.
Detour signs were posted overnight, and the road reopened after temporary repairs during the week.
“The issue on (County) 93 was created by the flow of the Kabekona River being able to undermine the roadway as it gained access underneath the abutment,” County Public Works Coordinator Jed Nordin said in a written statement. “The protection for the bridge on the waterside, primarily the riprap, had been moved away from the abutment, allowing the undermining to occur.”
Nordin said he could not explain how or why the riprap was removed

“A beaver dam that spanned the full width of the waterway also assisted with the problem by diverting water directly towards the abutment, creating a swirling effect that was able to pull material from beneath the roadway,” he said. “Once there was enough material removed, the strength of the pavement was not enough to stand.”
An alert area resident discovered the hole and contacted the sheriff’s office, Nordin said. Deputies, Minnesota State Troopers and the Lakeport Fire Department responded quickly to divert traffic away from the damage until the county highway personnel set up barriers to close the road for the night.
“Thanks to a great cooperative effort of the emergency crews and Hubbard County staff, there were no injuries to report,” said Nordin. “Temporary repairs have since been made so that the roadway is safely open to traffic. Paving will take place later this spring once construction crews start up for the season.”

Fortunately there were no casualties...besides a few aluminum pots that tumbled into the hole

WorkSafe BC has issued a stop work order for the construction site at 138 East Eighth Ave., which was currently being developed into a six-storey condo complex. According to Neal Wells, communications manager for the city, a geotechnical engineer made an assessment of the site over the weekend and determined there was no risk to the surrounding buildings.
The contractor has pumped out the excess water from the pit, and work to rebuild the retaining wall is due to begin on Tuesday morning. Drivers should anticipate potential traffic delays on East Eighth as crews clean up the site. A recorded message for the Congee Noodle House says that the restaurant is closed until further notice, due to a sinkhole. The exact cause of the retaining wall collapse is yet to be determined.

Huge sinkhole swallows bus, kills nine in China

An enormous sinkhole swallowed a bus and pedestrians in northwest China, sparking an explosion and killing nine people, state media said.
Footage showed people at a bus stop running from the collapsing road as the vehicle — jutting into the air — sank into the ground.
Several people disappeared into the sinkhole as it spread, including what appeared to be a child. The incident also triggered an explosion inside the hole, video showed.
Sinkholes are not unknown in China, where they are often blamed on construction works and the country’s rapid pace of development.
The incident occurred at around 5:30pm on Monday in Xining, the capital of Qinghai province, the state-run broadcaster CCTV said.
Nine people were confirmed dead as of 10pm on Tuesday, according to CCTV. A search and rescue operation involving more than 1,000 people and 30 vehicles was under way, according to the official Xinhua news agency. An investigation into the cause has been opened.
Video footage published by state broadcaster CGTN showed a person being pulled from the hole by rescue workers.
The collapse left an 80-square-metre (860-square-foot) pit in the street outside a hospital. The 16 injured were taken to hospital and are in a stable condition, Xinhua added, citing a local emergency management official.
Xinhua said earlier that four people were missing, although CCTV did not specify how many remained unaccounted for as of Tuesday night.
In 2016, at least three people fell into a huge sinkhole in central Henan province, which swallowed a section of road and passersby.
An initial investigation showed the collapse might have been caused by water pipes buried under the road breaking up due to the rain.
In 2013, five people died when a 10-metre (33-foot) wide sinkhole opened up at the gates of an industrial estate in Shenzhen.
Some 1,000 emergency workers and 30 vehicles were sent to the site, the emergency management bureau in the city of Xining said. A crane was called in to lift the bus above the sinkhole so rescue workers could look for victims.
Video apparently shot by security cameras just after the accident showed the bus gradually settling into the hole while people nearby scrambled for safety.
Other video showed the bus tipped more than halfway into the chasm that had opened up at a bus stop just outside a health clinic. Light and smoke were coming to the surface, possibly as a result of the rupture of gas or electricity lines. Workers using backhoes, dump trucks and other equipment excavated earth around the collapse.
The the emergency management bureau said the bus had been raised from the collapsed 80-square-metre section into which it had fallen. The hilly city of Xining is the capital of Qinghai province, one of China’s poorest regions, sitting atop the Tibetan Plateau.
The expedited building of roads, tunnels, bridges and other infrastructure to keep China’s economy strong has often led to corner-cutting on safety, causing fatal workplace and industrial accidents. Mining had also caused instability in the ground in many areas after years of barely restricted mineral extraction.

Large Hole Suddenly Appears in Maros.

SULSELONLINE.COM, MAROS - Residents of the village of Lebbo Tengae, District of Cenrana, Maros Regency, were horrified by a large hole that suddenly appeared on Monday (12/23/2019).

One resident, Mappiare (40 years), claimed to have initially seen smoke rising from the rice fields. After a few minutes, a roar could be heard that shocked the residents.

"At first I saw that there was smoke like burning. Then there were sounds like thunder and bulldozers. Then I approached and looked at it. But the width is still like an ordinary well, "he told reporters.

The depth of the hole was initially 50 meters with an initial diameter of about 2 meters. But this hole continues to expand to a diameter of about 15 meters.

"The land continues to fall into the water, so it widens. The ground is still falling inward, it could be wider. Because now there are already 15 meters wide, "he added.

Residents continue to arrive because they are curious about the appearance of giant holes. The police are now putting a dividing line.

Camba Maros police chief, AKP Haedar Muis, said that since the emergence of the big hole, this morning, residents continued to arrive.

"Many residents from other villages have come out of curiosity to see. Earlier, the police had already been given a line because it was feared that residents would approach and fall. That land does not stop sinking, "he said.

In the last week, several sinkholes have been presented in various mayor's offices in Mexico City.

On December 14, in Tláhuac, a 7-meter deep hole was opened in which two people remained inside a vehicle. The Rescue and Medical Emergency Squadron (ERUM) gave them attention.

The same day, but another incident occurred in Benito Juárez. It is presumed that it originated from a water leak.

On December 13, a hole was formed in Iztapalapa with a depth of 14 meters, in the town of Santa María Acahualtepec. About 70 people living around the incident were evicted.
