Hurricane Polo has exploded into a Category 5 hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast after an extraordinary period of rapid intensification.

Polo went from a tropical storm to Category 5 strength in roughly 24 hours, making it one of the fastest-intensifying hurricanes on record. The Category 5 storm is expected to move slowly near southwestern Mexico, bringing the threat of torrential rainfall, life-threatening flooding and mudslides, strong winds, and dangerous surf to portions of the coast.
