Underground electrical explosion rocks downtown Toronto and fills the city center with smoke

  • Loud blasts rocked downtown Toronto Monday afternoon
  • Smoke billowed from under a busy street
  • Police said there was a fire in an underground vault holding transformers
  • Terrorism is not suspected

Loud blasts echoed in Toronto's financial district Monday and smoke billowed from under a busy street, disrupting car traffic and subway service.

Fire department officials said a fire erupting around 5pm in an underground vault holding high-voltage transformers was to blame.

Toronto Fire Services said was caused by an overheated hydro vault, reported CBC News.

Police Constable Allyson Douglas Cook said there were no indications of any terrorism link.

'It's energized, electrical equipment that's in the vault, it overheats, starts melting down ... so that's where you're hearing the crackle and the popping,' Platoon Chief Kevin Shaw told reporters. 'There [were] visible flames out of there probably a half hour ago, but we feel that it's definitely under control now.'

Police cleared the normally busy King street in front of the Bank of Nova Scotia headquarters during rush hour. Subways bypassed King Station and streetcars were diverted.

Witnesses said they were heard multiple explosions that rocked the sidewalk beneath them.

'It definitely sounded like some type of explosion, but not like fireworks. I don't know how to describe it - not like fun, you know what I mean?' eyewitness Mike Amsterdam, who filmed the scene with his phone, said.

Miraculously, no injuries were reported.

Billowing brown and black smoke came from under the street and purple flames were seen poking out of a grate, reported City News.

Sparks could also be seen emanating from multiple grates on the sidewalk.

Carbon dioxide tanks were rushed to the scene to control the fire.

There was a report of power going out at RBC tower at 20 King West and people being evacuated.

A small electrical fire started by a power surge has knocked Norfolk County Council’s website, email systems, and telephones offline.

The authority is asking people to only call them in an emergency whilst they get engineers to fix the problem – a task that could take the weekend.

They say their usual emergency numbers are up and running.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington's transit agency will expedite repairs to a heavily-traveled section of

downtown track after three electrical fires in two weeks.

http://www.dailyprogress.com/metro-to-expedite-repairs-after-latest...

Rush-hour service on Metro's red line was compromised by the most recent fire on Thursday morning (Apr 27).

Chief Safety Officer Pat Lavin tells The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/l8ds5z2) that the problem was caused by aging

rail fasteners. The fasteners are 30 to 40 years old.

Replacing rail fasteners will be part of Metro's new preventive maintenance program that will start in July. But general

manager Paul Wiedefeld says repairs on that portion of the red line will begin immediately after the system closes on

Thursday night. Electrical fires on the tracks have been an ongoing problem for Metro, which has lost riders amid

safety and reliability concerns.

(This power outage coincides with the coast-to-coast power outages in NYC, LA, San Francisco, and North Carolina)

Ferry smashes into a port wall on Gran Canaria leaving five people injured after a power cut lasting just two minutes causes engine failure

  • Five people have been taken to hospital after a ferry crashed off Gran Canaria
  • Ferry smashed into port wall in Las Palmas after a power cut 'lasting two minutes'
  • One man suffered a broken collar bone, five more received treatment on scene
  • Up to 200,000 litres of fuel was initially feared to have spilled into the ocean

A ferry crash that injured five people was caused by a power cut that prompted the engine to fail, it is believed.

The boat crashed into a pier on the holiday island of Gran Canaria after the voltage dropped for just two minutes, according to operating company Naviera Armas.

The company insists the outage would not have been a problem had the ferry been sailing on the open sea where there were no obstacles.

Video footage showed the ship - which was heading towards the neighbouring island of Tenerife with 140 passengers, 30 crew members and dozens of vehicles on board - adrift and at the mercy of the sea before it hit the concrete wall at the entrance to Luz Port in the Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas.

Five people have been taken to hospital after a ferry crashed off Gran Canaria. The car ferry smashed into a port wall in Las Palmas after an engine failure while five more were treated on scene

Five people were taken to hospital including one man who suffered a broken collarbone after falling to the ground during the collision, and another five received medical attention at the scene.

Most of those affected, who included a pregnant woman, suffered panic attacks. None were seriously injured.

It is thought some British holidaymakers were on board the vessel at the time, although the exact number is not known.

The incident, involving a car ferry called the Volcan de Tamasite which regularly covers the two-and-a-half-long route between the two islands, happened just before 8.30 on Friday.

The ferry lost power as it was leaving port and crew attempts to stop the collision by getting the engines restarted and throwing down anchors failed.

The damaged port wall came down on two vehicles belonging to oil firm Onyx which were refuelling a nearby ship, causing an oil spill which last night/on Friday night led to an environmental emergency being declared.

Up to 200,000 litres of fuel was initially feared to have spilled, although port authority sources said they believed the situation could be brought under control without major environmental consequences because of sea currents.

Coastguards vessels were sent to inspect the scene on Friday night.

A police investigation was underway last night in conjunction with a separate investigation by the ferry's owner Naviera Armas.

Three Power pole fires leave over 100 Casper residents, businesses without power

April 22, 2017

Over 100 Casper residents and businesses were left without power Friday afternoon after three power poles caught reportedly caught fire.

Paul Murphy, spokesman for Rocky Mountain Power, described all three incidents as "pole fires."

Murphy says one fire in the area of Jim Bridger and CY Avenue left 10 customers without power, another on Poplar left 128 without power and one more damaged pole on Durbin left one person in the dark.

Repair crews are either on the scene or en route to each location. No injuries have been reported as a direct result of any outage.

Sgt. Zack Winter of the Casper Police Department says the outage near the Loaf N Jug at CY Avenue and Jim Bridger Avenue was reported at roughly 3 p.m. as both a 'possible lightning strike' and a 'shots fired' call.

Casper residents took to social media, saying they heard a loud bang before power went out.

There was no evidence of a lightning strike, Winter said, but it was clear that the transformer had blown up. The top of the pole could be seen dangling by the remaining power lines.

"The power line was actually down, so we ensure the public stays away from the power line until the company comes out," Winter said.

That power line has been removed from the ground, Winter added.

Murphy says the weather likely played a role in each outage.

"Whenever you have moisture, that can cause an electricity line to arc. When it arcs, the pole catches fire and we send crews to replace that pole."

"Unfortunately, it's pretty common," Murphy added.
