Report: 70 percent of Hawaii beaches eroding

A new report says 70 percent of beaches on Kauai, Oahu and Maui are undergoing long-term erosion.

Scientists from the USGS and the UH School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) studied more than 150 miles of island coastline and found the average rate of coastal change was 0.4 feet of erosion per year from the early 1900s to 2000s.

Of those beaches eroding, scientists say the most extreme case was nearly six feet per year near Kualoa Point in east Oahu.

"The inevitable fate of the Hawaiian Islands millions of years into the future is seen to the northwest in the spires of French Frigate Shoals and the remnants of other once mighty islands, ancestors of today's Hawaii, but now sunken beneath the sea through the forces of waves, rivers, and the slow subsidence of the seafloor," explained USGS director Marcia McNutt.

Of the three islands, Maui beaches experienced the highest rates and greatest extent of beach erosion with 85% of beaches eroding. Erosion is the dominant trend of coastal change on all three islands with 71% of beaches eroding on Kauai and 60% of beaches eroding on Oahu.

The researchers used historical data sources such as maps and aerial photographs to measure shoreline change at more than 12,000 locations.

Unprecedented flood in the neighborhood of Sincelejo Uribe-Uribe

Hundreds of homeless families, material losses and two landslides is the balance left by the torrential downpour that occurred in the capital sucreña early yesterday morning.

The sector most affected was the city where Uribe-Uribe at approximately 6:30 am the water of the creek around the area overflowed by collapsing the Fifth Street bridge.

Local authorities yesterday afternoon gave a first estimate of the families affected by the emergency. Established an average of 100 families in Uribe-Uribe and 700 citywide.

The water levels in some homes in the neighborhood Uribe-Uribe came to exceed five feet tall. Children, elderly and women needed the help of members of Civil Defense and the National Police to get out of the floodplain.

Meanwhile, those affected tried all morning out of homes and household appliances that were under water.

According to Fany Corena, a resident of the sector, the last time the community experienced a flood of this magnitude was 15 years ago, but often are encumbrances on the experiences of the streets mentioned when winter rages.

Other sectors affected

Although smaller scale, the heavy rain also caused havoc in other parts of the city, among which are La Bastille, Pioneers, The Village, Port Arthur, The Americas, The Citadel and Swiss countryside.

In the latter the waters of the tributary that crosses the district exceeded the capacity of the drainage and sewers overflowed.

According to William Mendoza Cure, a resident of Switzerland Citadel, this is a problem that frequently arises, why a month ago the neighborhood community leaders sent an SOS to the Municipal Development Office and until their claims have not been addressed.

Similarly, the Bastille neighborhood residents yesterday began trying to get water to vessels that flooded their homes during the downpour that began about 5:30 am and lasted several hours.

Elsewhere, some buildings could not withstand the heavy rain and collapsed.

As in the Stadium on January 20 where about twenty yards from the back wall collapsed showing the weakness of the structure.

One of the walls of the Scuola Normale Superiore also collapsed a humble dwelling affecting Crescent neighborhood, where residents were outdoors.
