Strong Chile Earthquake / Tsunami Wave / N America Rocked (NEW ZetaTalk)

What is notable in this quake along the spine of the Andes is not its location or magnitude, but its reach into N America. Buoys on either side of the N American continent were on alert, and the pattern does not fit the tsunami warnings issued for the Chile quake. The tsunami alert was for the Pacific, spreading northwest out away from Chile. The buoys going off were on the Juan de Fuca Plate, along the western edge of the Caribbean Plate, on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Plate, and in the mid-Atlantic along the edge of the N American Plate. The N America and Caribbean Plates were bumped. Such is the state of the 7 of 10 plate movements!

A powerful earthquake has hit central Chile, causing buildings to sway in the capital Santiago, officials say.

The 8.3-magnitude tremor was centred off the coast, about 144 miles (232km) north-west of the capital.

Five people are now known to have died, and one million residents have been evacuated from coastal areas. There were reports of panic in some cities.

The earthquake produced waves of up to 4.5m (15ft) along the coast in the region of Coquimbo.

The tremor struck at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT), about 55km west of the city of Illapel, the US Geological Survey said.

Officials said it was at the depth of about 10km (six miles).

Several strong aftershocks were reported just minutes later.

Addressing the nation live on TV, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet confirmed that two women were killed after rubble fell down on them and a man died of a heart attack.

Ms Bachelet said she would travel to the affected areas later on Thursday.

The authorities later raised the confirmed death toll to five, saying that one person was missing.

Some homes were reportedly damaged in the city of Illapel.

The earthquake struck as thousands of Chileans were travelling to the coast ahead of a week of celebrations of the national holidays, or Fiestas Patrias.

Tsunami alerts were also issued for Peru, Hawaii, parts of California and as far away as New Zealand.

New Zealand authorities warned of unusually strong currents and unpredictable water flows, reported local media. At least one school has evacuated.

The quake was also strongly felt in some Argentine provinces like Mendoza and in the capital Buenos Aires several buildings were evacuated, the BBC's Ignacio de los Reyes reports.

Chile is one of the most seismically active locations on the globe.

It runs along the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. These are vast slabs of the Earth's surface that grind past each other at a rate of up to 80mm per year.

In February 2010, a 8.8-magnitude struck off central Chile, killing more than 500 people.

The Latest: Small tsunami triggered by quake reaches Alaska

http://www.sfgate.com/news/science/article/The-Latest-Small-tsunami...

9:30 a.m.
A small tsunami triggered by a deadly earthquake off Chile has reached as far north as Alaska.
The National Tsunami Warning Center says King Cove, Alaska, reported water heights of six-tenths of a foot late Tuesday morning.
Tsunami effects also were felt along the coasts of California, Oregon and British Columbia.
Most of the surge occurred outside a 300-mile stretch of California under a tsunami advisory, said Paul Whitmore, the center's director in Palmer, Alaska.
Whitmore says the advisory likely will be lifted in the early afternoon.

Currently 31 tsunami buoys in event mode, many of which commenced within the past 12 hours and showing significant rapid water column displacements, such as Station 21416 off Kamchatka with a 40+ meter displacement in 85 seconds.

Tsunami alert for Hawaii and California after powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake hits Chile, killing at least five and injuring 20 as homes collapse and giant waves pummel the shore

  • Tsunami could hit Hawaii just after 3am local time (9am EST), experts warn, as evacuations take place along coast
  • San Onofre beach in California may also be in the tsunami's path - although the waves are likely to be less than 1ft
  • 15ft waves have already flooded towns in Chile after the 8.3 magnitude earthquake off Chile's west coast
  • Five are dead, including two women, aged 20 and 35, and a man in his 80s. At least 20 others are thought injured

Hawaii and California are on alert after a tsunami warning was issued following a powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake in Chile.

The huge quake made buildings sway in Chile's capital Santiago, where terrified residents were seen gathering in streets to avoid falling debris.

Fifteen-foot waves struck the Chilean shore, flooding towns as people fled to higher ground.

The Chilean government has confirmed the death of five people, including a 20-year-old woman who was crushed by falling rocks. At least 20 more people have been injured.

If there is a tsunami, waves are expected to hit Hawaii shortly after 3am local time (9am EST) Thursday.

Authorities have begun ordering evacuations along the coast, including parts of Honolulu.

An alert has also been issued for San Onofre beach in California, although the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said waves were unlikely to be higher than a foot.'
