Europe

VIENNA: Summer came early to central and eastern Europe as unseasonally-high temperatures were recorded on Saturday in several parts of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.

Temperatures "are exceptionally mild for April", Austria's ZAMG meteorological centre said, reporting a record 32 Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) in the northern region of Lower Austria.

The centre said the main reason for the summer weather gracing the region was a strong southern wind from Africa's Sahara desert.

Temperatures hovering around 28 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit) in Vienna drew large crowds to the banks of the Danube while Germany's Bild carried front-page pictures of Berlin residents sunbathing in 30 degrees.

Prague experienced its hottest April 28 in 212 years, with mercury hitting 27.7 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit) while unusually-high temperatures were also recorded in Poland and Slovakia.

The national heat record - 29.9 degrees measured in Pecs (S) in 1947 - was broken in Korosszakal (E) with a temperature of 31.3 degrees.

Sunday's forecast calls for continued hot weather, though the wind could take up in central and south-western parts of the country, Gaal added.

Vietnam, Laos
28.04.12. The mercury hit 39°C in Vientiane yesterday, recorded as the hottest day this year, according to the Meteorology and Hydrology Department.

The department forecasts that temperatures in the capital could soar to as high as 40°C next week, with hot weather affecting northern and central areas of Laos. The department told Vientiane Times yesterday that temperatures in some parts of Laos could reach their highest level in 10 years.

Deputy Head of the Weather Forecasting Aeronautical Division, Mr Bounterm Sisouphanthong, said the highest temperature recorded in Laos so far this year was 39.5°C in Luang Prabang province. But the province could see temperatures exceed 40°C next week.

The highest temperature recorded in Laos in the last 10 years was also reported in Luang Prabang province at 42°C, in 2003. In Vientiane, the highest temperature recorded in the last 10 years was 40.5°C.

Last year, the highest temperature recorded in Laos was 39.5°C in Xekong province, and in 2010 it was 41.3°C in L uang Prabang province.

Doctors recently warned people to be on the alert to prevent diarrhoea and other health problems that typically occur in times of hot weather.

Philippines

28.04.12. Yesterday Metro Manila sizzled at 36.4 degrees Celsius, now the highest temperature in Metro Manila recorded for the year.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (PAGASA) said Friday’s temperature is a record breaker after hitting 36.2 for the last two days.

Not yet the highest

Weather forecaster Jun Galang said the 36.4 degrees Celsius temperature was recorded around 3 p.m. yesterday. Yesterday, however, the highest nationwide is actually Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija’s 37.2. It was followed by 36.5 degrees Celsius in Tuguegarao City in Cagayan.

The highest temperature of the year was recorded in Clark at 38.4 degrees Celsius on April 13.

Galang said they are expecting the heat wave to continue because of a ridge of high pressure area extending across Luzon

According to Philippine Daily Inquirer Online, the record to beat in Metro Manila is May14, 1987’s 38.5 degrees Celsius.

Philippine Star reported other highest recorded temperatures in the country: 42.2 degrees Celsius in Tuguegarao City on May 11, 1969; 38.5 degrees Celsius at the Science Garden, Quezon City on May 14, 1987; 38.5 degrees Celsius in Sangley Point, Cavite on May 16, 1987; 38.1 degrees Celsius at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Parañaque City on May 18, 1969; and 38.6 degrees Celsius in Port Area, Manila on May 17, 1915.

Amid the heat, today’s weather for the whole archipelago is said to be partly cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening. PAGASA said the country will experience hot weather until the end of May.
