Farmers suffer huge losses in recent floods

KENDRAPADA: The recent flood fury in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur districts has affected standing paddy crops, threatening shortfall in crop production. Nearly one lakh hectares of paddy was submerged in these areas.

The secondary crops of sugarcane and jute were also affected in the floods, including a variety of vegetables, causing a further rise in the price of food stuff. The price of rice has shot up to Rs 300 to 400 per quintal over the last week, caused mainly by unscrupulous traders indulging in hoarding. Rice stocks are not freely available even at the high prices as a section of millers and wholesale traders have joined hands to create an artificial scarcity in the wake of reports that paddy production is likely to fall due to floods. The price of rice in retail market has jumped from Rs 17 a kg to Rs 20-22 a kg for preferred varieties.

Flash flood in Pampa, parking lots at Triveni inundated

Water level in River Pampa, on the foothills of Sabarimala, witnessed a sudden spurt around 8.15 p.m. following heavy downpour in the forests, on Wednesday.

The river breached its banks following flash floods and the vehicle parking lots at Pampa-Triveni, on the banks of Pampa and the Pampa Manalpuram were inundated with flood waters. Many vehicles parked at Triveni parking lots have been submerged in the flash flood, according to reports received here from Pampa at 8.30 p.m..

Forest department sources at Pampa told The Hindu that the flash flood in Pampa might have been due land slides that may have occurred somewhere in the interiors of the forests.

Sannidhanm-bound pilgrims had to wade through the flood waters along the Pampa Manalpuram in the evening, sources said.

The holy hillock of Sabarimala witnessed heavy rush on Wednesday too as hundreds of pilgrims trekked the holy hills, braving the heavy downpour.

Burma:

Dozens killed, hundreds missing, in Pakkokku flood

Chaing Mai (Mizzima) – As of noon Friday, 58 people are confirmed to have drowned, with hundreds others still missing, in the Shwechaung stream in the east of Pakkokku Township, Magwe Division, according to the Immigration
A key bridge on the road connecting Pakkokku with Mandalay in central Burma lies in ruins after heavy rains and flash floods swept through the region. The storms are being blamed for dozens of deaths. Photo: Mizzima.

The deaths are blamed on flash flooding caused by torrential rains in the region. A further 320 people are still missing as a result of landslides and flood waters, a local official said.

Residents in the area report at least 500 houses from an illegal slum quarter called Kyatthit, located beside the Shwechaung stream, were swept away by the flood waters.

“There was a landslide along the bank of the stream, about 400 or 500 yards in length in some places. About 15 to 20 feet of soil eroded and the houses were swept away by the water. In total about 500 houses [were effected],” said one resident.

Four relief centres in local monasteries have opened to care for flood victims.

Residents further state that transportation in the area has been severed, as a concrete bridge over the stream, an important link on the road connecting Pakkokku with Mandalay, suffered heavy damage. Pakkokku’s fire brigade is building an emergency bypass.

On Thursday evening local authorities in Pakkokku warned that because of heavy rain there could be small effects around downtown areas of Pakkokku.

Burma floods leave trail of devastation

Nearly 200 people are missing or dead and thousands more affected by heavy floods in central Burma’s Magwe division, as the deluge of uncharacteristic monsoon rains continue to wage destruction across Southeast Asia.

Reports claim a flash flood swept away around 50 homes in Pakkoku yesterday; local police have confirmed that 38 bodies have been recovered from the river, the majority women. Around 150 are still missing. Up to 300 huts in a slum on the edge of town were also destroyed. Images taken yesterday show that the Shwechaung bridge, close to Pakkoku, has collapsed.

More than 30 villages in Seikphyu township, around 50 miles south of Pakkoku, have also been affected by floods, fuelled by heavy rains that caused the nearby Yaw Creek to burst its banks.

Locals there had little warning about the impeding disaster: one Seikphyu resident told DVB that water levels in the creek rose around 2am on Wednesday morning, uprooting trees and forcing thousands to flee.

“Even two-story buildings are inundated up to the roof,” said another man in the nearby Chaungmagyi village tract. “I moved all my food stocks and belongings to the upper floor in my house but they’ve all been swamped.”

He said that although people are struggling to find shelter, no fatalities have yet been reported in Chaungmagyi. Water levels have now dropped from eight feet to two feet, he added.

Elsewhere the picture is similarly bleak. In the region around Magwe division’s Sinbyugyun town, some 20 villages were flooded after the Lin Zin dam north of the town broke. Swathes of farmland have been submerged.

Neighbouring Thailand is currently experiencing its worst floods in more than 50 years. Close to 350 have been confirmed dead and many more are missing, as the floodwaters close in on Bangkok.

During at least three months this year, rainfall was nearly twice the 30 year average. Areas of eastern Burma have also experienced landslides as a result of torrential rains.

Affectees continue to suffer, life not returned to normal in flood hit areas of Sindh

In various flood hit districts of Sindh, life has not returned to normal due to stagnant water, despite passage of several weeks.
People of flood hit districts have to face hardships in reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure and preparing agricultural lands for cultivation of Rabbi crops.
Millions of acres of land in Mirpur, Benazirabad, Dadu, Thatta, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Alayar was still under water.
Though academic activities have been restored in some parts of the province but millions of students of hundreds of schools in the affected districts were not getting education as their schools were either completely destroyed due to rains and floods or damaged to such an extent that they were not in position to be used any more.
The affected population was of the view that government should accelerate the relief activities so as to help people in settling back in their native areas.
They said that steps taken by provincial and federal governments were not sufficient to deal with large scale destruction and more heavy machinery should be sent in the affected areas to drain out the stagnant flood water.
The affectees also appealed for payment of compensation as soon as possible so that they can reconstruct homes for them and restart cultivation, business and other activities to earn livelihood for their families.

Exotissimo Travel Support ‘Gecko Kids’ In Helping Cambodia’s Flood Victims

Siem Reap, Cambodia (October 19, 2011) Exotissimo Travel have been working with Hotel de la Paix, Heritage Suites Hotel and Golden Banana Boutique Hotel & Resorts to support Green Gecko, a local NGO aimed at helping street children, in raising funds for assistance to families affected by the flooding that hit Cambodia.

Flooding has affected 17 of Cambodia's 24 provinces, killing 247 people and forced the evacuation of more than 34,000 households, destroying some 200,000 hectares of rice fields in accordance to the National Committee for Disaster Management.

The inspiration for the flood relief appeal came about after the three above named hotels invited children from Green Gecko to share their concerns about the food crisis and make a proposal on how they would like to help. Responding to the call, the Green Gecko children said, “Our plan is to save money from our own food spending to buy rice, canned fish, soy sauce and clean water for families that need help.” This initiative also inspired Exotissimo Travel Cambodia, who are now taking part in the project.

Mobilized by the children’s appeal, Exotissimo Travel, the hotels and Green Gecko sprang into action and a first delivery of rice, fish and soy sauce was made to each of the 20 most desperate families at a commune in the outskirts of Siem Reap. A second delivery will take place on Thursday October 20 for another 150 families. In addition to donating and raising funds, staff from the hotels and Exotissimo will work alongside the children and staff of Green Gecko to help with the delivery.
& nbsp;
“We understand this initiative does not serve as a long term solution; our goals are simply to offer some emergency relief, to buy some time until aid organizations have time to reach them”, said Tania Palmer, the co-founder and director of the Green Gecko Project. She also thanked the collaborators for helping the children to reach out to their community. “Thank you for supporting our kids in their initiative and involving them in such a great community project, you all made them feel very special and worthy”.

Hamish Keith, Chief Operations Manager of Exotissimo Travel said “As a leading tour destination management company in Southeast Asia, we feel it is our duty to help the people of the region whenever they are in need. This is an excellent initiative and fine spirit shown by the children at Green Gecko to get this going. We are proud to work alongside them as well as our friends from the hotels.”

Exotissimo and the hotels are launching an appeal through their guests and friends to raise funds for the Drive for Direction Action for Emergency Flood Relief Collaboration, and call on anyone who can, to help them assist families that are desperately in need.
