Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)

"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Thousands Facing Evacuation as Pacaya Volcano Erupts in Guatemala (Mar 1)
A volcano has erupted in Guatemala, prompting the authorities to consider the evacuation of some 3,000 people living in the area.

The Pacaya volcano began spewing ash and lava after a powerful explosion on Saturday afternoon.

New explosions were seen on Sunday, with ash clouds reaching a height or at least 4km (3 miles).

Flights have been diverted from the area, some 50km (30 miles) south of the capital, Guatemala City.

The Pacaya is one of three active volcanoes in the Central American nation. The other two are the Fuego and the Santa Maria.

"We are assessing with the National Disaster Management Centre (Conred) whether we will need to evacuate the 3,000 people who live in the villages of El Rodeo and Patrocinio," said the Pacaya National Park director, Humberto Morales.

"Access to the areas around the volcano has been suspended," he told the Prensa Libre newspaper.

Marapi Volcano Erupts in Indonesia (Feb 26)

Mount Marapi in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province erupted Wednesday, shooting ash to the sky and incurring a downpour of ash and volcanic sand up to 10 km to the south of the crater, an official said.

Powerful bursts of ash, sand and gravel erupted from the volcano located in Tanah Datar and Agam districts at 4.15 p.m. Jakarta time, Warseno, the official in-charge at the observatory post of the volcano, told Xinhua.

However, the height of the column could not be determined visually as visibility was impaired by haze enveloping West Sumatra due to forest fire in the neighbouring province of Riau, he added.

The authorities have closed the area within a three-km danger zone from the crater as the volcano is on third-highest alert level, he said.

So far, the authorities have not recommended any evacuation.

The volcano has had a total of 57 recorded eruptions since January 2014.

Poás Volcano Erupts in Central Costa Rica (Feb 25)

The active volcano erupted just after noon Tuesday in the Poás Volcano National Park.

A webcam from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) captured the moment a dark cloud exploded from a massive crater of the Poás Volcano.

The research institute, affiliated with the National University of Costa Rica, said the blast was a phreatic explosion which occurs when magma or hot rocks heat surface water to the point where it boils and quickly explodes in a burst of stem.

Earlier this month, Costa Rica's National Seismological Network (RSN) released a report saying that the volcano’s crater was glowing red-hot with molten rock and was emitting sulfur.

The Poás Volcano, a frequently visited tourism site, is one of the country's most prominent natural landmarks.

It is located in a national park of the same name in the Alajuela Province.

Kelut Volcano Update: - 100,000 Evacuated, 3 Dead (Feb 14)

A powerful volcanic eruption on Indonesia's most populous island blasted ash and debris 18 kilometers (12 miles) into the air Friday, killing three people and forcing authorities to evacuate more than 100,000 and close seven airports.

The eruption of Mount Kelud on Java island could be heard up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) away, Indonesia's disaster agency said.

"The eruption sounded like thousands of bombs exploding," Ratno Pramono, a 35-year-old farmer, said as he checked his property in the village of Sugihwaras, about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the crater. "I thought doomsday was upon us. Women and children were screaming and crying."

Preliminary estimations are that the eruption produced 80 million cubic meters of tephra. At the moment, the volcano continues to emit ash and steam, accompanied by tremors. The government of East Java has declared the state of emergency for the affected area. 350,000 dust masks are being distributed.

BNPB (Civil protection) confirmed 3 fatalities caused by the eruption. Two people died after their houses collapsed under the weight of ash. All of the victims were in Pandasari village less than 7 km from the volcano where 20 cm of ash has fallen.

By late afternoon Friday, ash had spread farther across the island and was falling on the large highlands city of Bandung, more than 500 kilometers away. The government volcanology center said it was uncertain whether ash would also reach the capital, Jakarta, more than 600 kilometers away.

Thousands Evacuated Following Powerful Eruptions at Mt Kelud (Feb 13)
Thousands of people on Java island are being evacuated after Mount Kelud erupted, an Indonesian official said.

Volcanic ash from the major eruption has led to the closure of three international airports and darkened skies on Indonesia's densely populated Java Island.

Ash covered the ground up to 130 kilometers (80 miles) away in Surabaya, the country's second-largest city, witnesses there said.

The country's transport ministry said Jogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya aiports were closed due to reduced visibility and the dangers posed to aircraft engines by ash.

Muhammad Hendrasto, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre, said the volcano in Kediri regency erupted about 90 minutes after authorities raised its status to the highest level.

He urged about 200,000 people living in 36 villages within the danger zone of six miles (10km) from the crater to evacuate.

A series of huge blasts unleashing stones and gravel caused panic among villagers who immediately fled to safer areas.

"The rains of gravel and sand have reached 15 km from the crater, hitting and impairing those being evacuated. This means that the evacuees must go farther than 15 km," Xinhua quoted Umar Rosadi, a volcanologist, as saying.

Based on data recorded days before the eruption, the official said that there are at least 21,000 people living in the dangerous zone.

Mt. Sinabung's Eruption Spawns Tornadoes (Feb 1)

When Mt Sinabung erupted on Feb 1, pyroclastic flows left red-hot deposits along the way.

As the air above the deposits heated and quickly rose, a group of small tornadoes formed, twisting their way down the mountainside.

The video of the event was captured by Dr. Richard Roscoe of Photovolcanica.

* More Haze For Southern Peninsula Malaysia [Malaysian Digest; 04 February, 2014]

KUALA LUMPUR: The northwesterly winds may cause ashes from the recently erupted Mount Sinabung volcano in Indonesia to reach the southern peninsular of Malaysia, causing flight disruptions and reduced visibility.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET) said, recent reports showed that the winds may continue until Wednesday. MET added that it will continue monitoring the situation and update its information on the direction of the wind and its possible threat to flights and visibility.

Last Saturday, the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Indonesia confirmed around 16 deaths and 3 injuries following the eruption of Mount Sinabung in the district of Karo, North Sumatera.

Hot clouds of ash and smoke continues to emanate from the volcano at dangerous levels, affecting the health of the people in the surrounding area.

Those who stay close to the area have been moved to a temporary safe house.

Sinabung is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
