Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm.
The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated" with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. "
It has been confirmed with air traffic control that there are no incidents of aircraftin difficult and nothing registered on radar," she said. "
The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only." Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a "flare or a bright object with a tail" were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a "large ball of fire in the sky" across Annandale and Eskdale.
One user wrote on the force's Facebook page: "It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!" Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. The Observatory posted on Twitter: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I have ever seen period."

A meteor streaking across the Ohio skies put on quite a show for a few brief seconds Thursday evening.
Reports began coming in just after 10 p.m. on Thursday of a bright object streaking across the sky at about 9:55 p.m.
"It was an incredible sight. It came from the south, streaked over head quickly and then within a second disappeared over Lake Erie," Kathy from Willoughby Hills, Ohio said. She described the sight as a bright white ball with a long, green tail.
Steven from Wooster, Ohio saw it too. He said he also saw "2 or 3 pieces that came off bottom and were traveling at a slower velocity."
The shooting star was observed across portions of Ohio, Southern Ontario, Western Pennsylvania, Ohio & West Virginia.
Steven in Toronto, comments, "Never seen anything like it before. There was a main body of white streaking across the sky, (and) smaller objects near it."
"Just saw a glow over the lake, green blue in colour. (It) looked like a firework at first but we realized it wasn't." said K.J. from Sarnia, Ontario.
Margaret from Perry, Ohio exclaims, "I have seen a few fireballs in my life. Never one that was green. So cool. looked like green sparks coming off initial fireball. Fireball faded with no flash. Glowing green and white that faded to white."
The sight was also seen in Circleville, near Columbus, Ohio.
"It was going horizontal all white, then it exploded in a red- orange It was white glowing trail," said Lloyd Poling.

The night sky lit up with what appears to be a meteor, Thursday.
But it wasn't just a sight for local (Toronto) eyes, the meteor could be seen in Michigan, Chicago, Ottawa, Huntsville and as far as Nevada and Florida.
"I was driving north on 9th Line near Stouffville and I was shocked by a very bright blue/green light that, at first, seemed like it was coming in my direction. I instinctively hit the breaks and then I realized that it was a meteor. It carried on lasting for about 5 seconds and faded out but it was very intense," he explained.

Early Thursday morning Jason Sarabia saw a bright meteor shoot across the sky.
The Frenchtown resident and his wife, Maria, were driving to the Clinton park-and-ride lot shortly before 6 a.m. when, after passing the Clinton A&P supermarket, he saw a green-tinged white ball of light burst across the sky in an easterly direction.
The flash, which lasted between four and six seconds, was as bright as a full moon, he said.
"If you were outside, you were going to see this," he said.
Sarabia wasn't alone. Witnesses as far north as New Hampshire and as far south as Delaware said they saw the fireball, a brighter-than-usual meteor, according to logs on American Meteor Society and Latest Worldwide Meteor/Meteorite News.
"I didn't see anything falling off of it or smoke," Sarabia said, adding that it was three times larger than the North Star.

Another undiscovered asteroid zoomed past Earth yesterday (Sept 14).
Notable quote: “Near-Earth objects have been whizzing past us lately, undetected until they have been practically on top of us,” said Bob Berman, Slooh commentator and Astronomy Magazine writer.
"A newly found asteroid (2012 QG42) will zip past Earth tonight at a distance of 2.85 million km (1.7 million miles).. closest approach is on September 14 at 05:08 UT (1:08 am EDT). This asteroid is between 190 to 430 meters (625 feet to 1,400 feet) wide and was first spotted by astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on August 26."

Nigel Booth spotted what he believes was a meteor burning up over Grantham last night.
Nigel and his wife Debbie, of East Street, saw the round orange and blue light moving across the sky for almost three minutes - before it disappeared.
Nigel told granthampeople: "The sky was really clear so we went for a walk along our street, which doesn't have lights, shortly after 9.30pm.
"We were facing north and saw a largish, slow-moving, orange and blue coloured light at about a 60 degree angle from the earth.
"We watched if for between two and three minutes moving across the sky from the west to east, and then it faded out.
"It was really easy to see with the naked eye.
"It wasn't a comet, as it didn't have a tail, and it's unlikely to have been a satellite falling to earth or it would be all over the national news.
"I reckon it was a meteor."
Nigel, who has been an amateur astronomer for more than 30 years, has seen meteors before - but they were only brief sightings and 'very high' in the night sky.

BAY AREA FIREBALL: Last night, Oct. 17th, many people near San Francisco saw a slow-moving fireball exploding in the sky around 07:45 pm PDT. Witnesses report bright flashes of light and sonic booms that shook houses. Using a wide-field camera, Wes Jones caught the meteor disappearing behind the trees in the city of Belmont

"We don't know yet if the end point [of the meteor's flight] was over land or water," says meteor expert Peter Jenniskens of the NASA Ames Research Center. Jenniskens operates a network of Cameras for All-sky Meteor Surveillance (CAMS) near the Bay Area. "Data from the CAMS system should give us an answer [about landfall]. We're analyzing the data now." Stay tuned.
Note: Although Earth is nearing a stream of debris from Halley's Comet, source of the Orionid meteor shower, this fireball was probably not an Orionid. The timing and direction of the meteor do not seem to match the Orionids.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) reports online that a meteor arced through the sky shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, causing surprise and awe across broad reaches of Northern California. The "fireball" was visible only briefly, but was so bright that it was easily seen from light-polluted cities, as well as rural areas.
The AMS maintains on online bulletin board where people can report what they've seen in the sky. Here is a sample of comments made Wednesday evening:
Michelle Penick of San Pablo: "The colors were blue and white. It was so bright that the homes and trees were lit up. After the flashing, it began to break up. It was close enough I was able to see it breaking up and burning a fiery red."
Max Wilson of Sonoma: "I was looking at the ground, when there was what seemed to be a prolonged flash from a camera. (One of those very bright, professional ones.) I looked up to the sky to see a bright light, which kept getting brighte rand brighter. I realized it was moving, but didn't seem to going all that fast. before I knew it, it had travelled across the entire sky, with a trail that must have been (at least) 100 miles long."
Aguilar De of San Jose: "I've never witnessed anything so spectacular in m y life! The fragmentation was bright red, and broke apart into 8 or 9 distinct pieces that seemed to rain downward. The train was a very bright yellow/white streak, that continued to glow even after the meteor broke apart."
Derek Trusedale of San Jose: "I was walking the other way on a city street with street lights. The fireball was bright enough that it made me turn around to see what was causing the flash behind me. It looked like someone had sent off a nearby horizontal bottle rocket. no boom. very pretty. I suspect I'll never see anything like that again in my life."

Large Daytime Fireball Observed Over UK Skies (Nov 9) -
The burning object was seen in the afternoon skies for 5 minutes, fragmenting while falling to earth, leaving two sisters to wonder whether they had just witnessed a plane crash.
Eleanor, a student at Hylands School, said: "I haven't seen anything like that before – it was so bright."
She spotted the object – with a distinctive fiery core and long, forked tail – as she got ready for her after-school paper-round.
"I was just taking my trolley from the garage when I caught sight of it," said Eleanor.
"At first I thought it was a plane but it got brighter and brighter.
"I shouted for my sister and then we called our dad, who told us to take a picture."
The fireball – thought to be caused by debris burning up in the earth's atmosphere – spent five minutes visible in the Chelmsford sky before it disappeared behind some houses.
"I'm not sure what it was but it was bright and it definitely looked like it was burning," added Eleanor, who used a normal ten-megapixel camera to capture the images.
The event stunned the family so much that Eleanor's mother, Martine, called the police to ask if anyone else in Essex had seen a burning meteor.
"I just can't believe Eleanor and Leanne were the only two people to see it," she said.
A series of pictures were taken by Eleanor Collop, 13, and her 17-year-old sister Leanne, after they spotted the fireball from outside their home on the Beechenlea Estate. The only picture made available to the public, however, is the following image of a fragment that detached from the large fireball.

Fireball Streaks Across Texas Skies (Dec 7) -

From McKinney to the White Rock Lake area and all the way south to Houston, a bright flash reported in the sky Friday morning captured the attention of many across the Lone Star State.
One McKinney woman reported seeing what appeared to be a comet streaking across the sky in a bright flash around 6:42 a.m. near Stonebridge Shopping Center.
Justin Wagoner, who lives in the White Rock Lake area, said he saw a green trail and heard a large "sonic boom" around the same time. Others reported seeing white and orange colors. The sight only lasted a few seconds before vanishing in the sky.
According to Dr. James Roberts, a University of North Texas astronomer who talked to WBAP, the mysterious object in the sky was likely a burned up meteor.
Mike Hankey, the operations manager with the American Meteor Society, said the flash was actually a fireball meteor, which is a meteor brighter than the norm.
The organization is comprised of amateur and professional astronomers focused focused specifically on meteor astronomy.
"For those not familiar with meteors and fireballs, a fireball is a meteor that is larger than normal. Most meteors are only the size of small pebbles," read a report on the American Meteor Society's online site. "A meteor the size of a softball can produce light equivalent to the full moon for a short instant. The reason for this is the extreme velocity at which these objects strike the atmosphere."

Fireball Observed Over Queensland Australia (Nov 26) -
The suspicious cloud of smoke which appeared in the sky on Monday is said to have been a meteorite. Plenty of locals witnessed the event.
http://www.cqnews.com.au/news/it-wasnt-a-bird-plane-or-superman/163...
A LOUD boom followed by a cloud of smoke in the sky had many Central Highlands residents taking a closer look on Monday.
Many residents speculated the theory behind the mysterious object was a meteorite heading for Earth at the speed of sound and disintegrating on entry.
A spokesman from the Bureau of Meteorology said that theory was most likely the correct explanation.
"We had a call from an Emerald resident at about 7pm (Monday night), wanting to know what it was," the spokesman said.
"It could have been a meteorite... or it may have been a bit of space debris."
If it was a meteorite, it could have been about 20,000 feet high, and the sound residents heard would have been a shockwave.
"If they come low enough they can cause a sonic boom as they enter the atmosphere lower down," the spokesman said.
"Not very loud, but distinctive … if they come into the troposphere - which is the lower atmosphere - when they lose velocity, you might hear a series of booms."
He said once it hit Earth, it would have been about the size of a small pebble and where it hit would be hard to determine.
"Depending on the direction it was coming through, it could have landed 100km (from where it was seen)," the spokesman said.

NASA: Friday’s fireball was a ‘probable’ meteorite
Friday, December 7, 2012
In an advisory just issued by NASA, scientists say the very bright fireball spotted by many people in Texas on Friday morning was a meteor, and is now most likely a meteorite.
And they’re interested in recovering it.
Here’s the official word from Bill Cooke, with Marshall Spaceflight Center’s Meteoroid Environments Office:
This morning at 6:43 AM Central Standard Time, eyewitnesses across Texas and adjacent states saw a very bright fireball streaking across the sky, moving roughly east to west. It was also recorded by a NASA meteor camera in Mayhill, New Mexico some five hundred miles to the West, which is very unusual and testifies to the brightness of the event.
This was not the re-entry of Kosmos 2251, which was destroyed in a collision with an Iridium satellite in February 2009; it is a meteor and not associated with the Geminid meteor shower.
Preliminary results indicate that there are meteorites from this meteor on the ground north of Houston, Texas – analysis is currently underway to refine the impact area. if pieces are recovered, it will be the 13th meteorite fall recorded in the state since 1909, and the first since Ash Creek, which fell in February of 2009.
video above, the moon is the bright object at lower center; the fireball is on the horizon at left and is surround by a white box when the camera detects it. Up is north, and left is east in the video.

Mysterious Fireball, Crash and Explosion in Sweden (Dec 11) -
Frightened residents in western Sweden reported seeing a bright, blue light racing across the night sky on Tuesday before an orange-coloured orb smashed into the ground in a mysterious phenomenon that has yet to be explained.
"It lit up the sky and flew over us, then we heard an explosion," witness Jessica Berg told the Aftonbladet newspaper.
"It was very weird. Uncomfortably weird."
Another witness, 24-year-old Sandra, thought the light may have been due to fireworks, but began to wonder when she never heard an accompanying pop.
"Then I thought it was a comet because it looked a little like an orb. It was red with a yellow sheen that surrounded and followed it," she told the paper.
"It looked like something was falling from the sky like in a film, like Armageddon or something.
"I've never seen anything like it."
Aviation authorities were quick to rule out initial theories that a plane had crashed somewhere deep in the forests of Värmland County.
They, as well as police, suspect the mysterious night light and thunderous blast that prompted a flood of calls from concerned residents may have been caused by a meteorite.
The first calls to emergency service SOS came around 10.25pm from Forshaga, a town about 25 kilometres north of Karlstad.
More calls came from Stöllet, Ekshärad and Karlstad, and on Facebook, police in Sunne reported a rumbling reminiscent of an earthquake.
"And we've also received information that people on the west coast and even in Finland made observations," Svensson told TT.
Neither police or other authorities have plans to investigate the strange sound and light phenomena.

"I heard a boom. My driveway lit up. It was so bright and I thought is was a car coming up the driveway. I looked up in the sky to the west side of my driveway and saw the shooting star. It was very bright and fell from the sky like a flare gun would. It was a very bright. Vanished as it fell from the sky. Crazy! I went inside and told my daughter Ashlee."
"I heard a loud boom here in the valley. Sounded like when power boxes explode only louder. Ben Howard Up in North Spokane, I saw the sky light up and watched a shooting star like object fall from the sky. 5 minutes later I heard a rumble/expansion."
"I went outside at 6:25 this morning to warm up my vehicle when I saw a flash of light. I look up at the sky and see what appears to be a shooting star only 10 times the size. I saw it through the haze of the sky. It had a tail on it as well. Any idea what it is?"
"What just happened? I saw a huge green glowing ball fly across the sky oveR my house on North Five Mile going NW to SE at around 6:25...about 2 minutes later I heard a loud explosion sound in the direction of the valley??????"
"I witnessed the bright flash at 0620hrs Friday morning from my back yard at Fairchild AFB. It was a meteor entering the atmosphere. I noticed the bright flash and looked up to see the meteor traveling southeast. The flash was from the meteor breaking apart. The explosion heard was the sonic boom from the high speed it was traveling at and impacting the thick atmosphere due to pressure and friction. Based on a rough count, the sonic boom followed roughly 30 seconds after seeing the flash. From my perspective, it did not impact the ground and exploded in the air. The entire visible flash lasted roughly 6 seconds."
"I was shoveling snow at 6:25 at my house on the south hill. All of the sudden everything lit up around me. I looked up and saw what appeared to be a meteor falling and breaking up. It was straight up in the southern horizon and appeared to be falling to the south. It was bright, slightly blue-green and appeared to break up in three sections. It streamed towards the ground like fireworks and faded in about 2-3 seconds. I started shoveling again and heard one of the loudest thunder sounds that I've ever heard about 30 seconds later. It was quite spectacular. I have never seen anything like it. Wondering about what I saw and thinking that maybe I saw a flare or falling plane, I decided to call crime check and report what I saw around 6:30 a.m. After that, I did a little research on the Internet and learned that there are plenty of similar falling meteor reports documented on line. In many cases, people report thunder or a loud boom about 30 seconds after seeing the light."

Fireball Blazes Across Nevada/California Skies (Jan 17)
A fireball spotted across a wide swath of the West from Reno to San Francisco might have broken up over the Pacific Ocean, experts said Friday.
The American Meteor Society based in New York said it had received reports from about 50 people in California and Nevada who saw the brilliant streak of light at 5:21 a.m. Thursday, spokesman Robert Lunsford said.
Lunsford said most of the reports came from the San Francisco Bay Area, but the fireball also was seen around Reno, and in San Diego and Redding, Calif. Most people described seeing an intense flash of blue or white light.
"It looks like it was heading from east to west, so it may have made it into the ocean," Lunsford told The Associated Press. "Most of the people who saw it were heading off to work in the dark, and say it lit up the ground like it was almost daylight."
Ronald Normandin was driving to work in Vacaville, Calif., when the fireball lit up the inside of his car.
"It looked like it was real close. It had a long streak of light, and the front part appeared to be huge and a squarish shape," he said.
Marnie Mattice, of Reno, said she was jogging with a friend when she saw the meteor light up the sky "kind of like lightning," then appear like "a very bright signal flare" in the distance.
"It wasn't symmetrical like a star, but more of an irregular circle. As it burned out, it left a trail and what appeared to be smaller glowing particles. It lasted long enough that we could stand and watch it burn out completely," she said.

Fireball Lights up Night Sky North of Philadelphia Pennsylvania (Jan 21)
Just before midnight on Monday, a bright flash occurred, lighting up the entire sky.
"It was a bright fireball," said Thomas Cupillari, director of the Thomas G. Cupillari '60 Observatory at Keystone College.
The all sky camera at the observatory caught footage of the fireball.
"This fireball was so bright it lit up the entire sky around it. It's very unusual for them to be so bright and last that long."
The camera is in a network with Sandia National Laboratory through New Mexico State University. They are set up at various locations so common events that overlap can be tracked.
"Regular meteors can be seen on clear nights and sometimes you can see several in one night, but fireballs aren't very common," Cupillari said. "One night our camera picked up 32 meteors and none of them were fireballs."
He added that when virtually all meteors are captured, the sky is black, but the one on Monday night lit up the sky.

Witnesses report a vivid tail of fire-like red particles extending from the fireball.
The fireball was likely a large, or close meteor. These events are more common than many people think.
Debris from space enter Earth's atmosphere all of the time and burn up in our sky as meteors. Occasionally, a meteor will be vivid or large enough to be described as a "fireball".

Fire in the sky: Ball of light flashes over South Florida
A ball of light in the sky resembling a meteor was reported Sunday night by several people in Miami-Dade and Broward counties..
“Looking over the Biscayne Bay from downtown, I saw an object falling from the sky,” said Brad Greenberg, 30, of Miami in a tweet about 6:30 p.m. “At first, the object was faintly glowing and moving fast but not nearly as fast as a shooting star.”
He said the object burned bright, as though a fuse reached an explosive, and then it was gone.
“The whole thing last maybe three seconds,” he said.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office reported receiving several calls claiming there were “lights in the sky.”

it is already causing wild speculation, like this poster in other thread:
"Are we losing our protective atmosphere?"
http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message2143589/pg1
also NASA has released a statement on recent meteor activity increase
NASA Statement on Fireballs:
http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2012/22feb_feb...
"This month, some big space rocks have been hitting Earth's atmosphere," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "There have been five or six notable fireballs that might have dropped meteorites around the United States."
It’s not the number of fireballs that has researchers puzzled. Instead, it's the appearance and trajectory of the fireballs that sets them apart.
"These fireballs are particularly slow and penetrating," explains meteor expert Peter Brown, a physics professor at the University of Western Ontario. "They hit the top of the atmosphere moving slower than 15 km/s, decelerate rapidly, and make it to within 50 km of Earth’s surface."
What is the explanation for this? NASA doesnt offer one.
If these pieces of space rock are coming from PX's tail, i guess they would be slower (shorter distance to travel, less attraction force and thus less inertia buildup) and with less distance than normal meteors from Asteroid belt, they would indeed be "particularly penetrating".
Zetas right again! Heed their warning!

Infrasonic waves from the Russian meteor were the largest ever recorded by the Comprehensive Nuclear‑Test‑Ban Treaty Organization's (CTBTO) International Monitoring System. Infrasound has been used as part of the CTBTO's tools to detect atomic blasts since April 2001.
The blast was detected by 17 infrasound stations in the CTBTO's network, which tracks atomic blasts across the planet. The furthest station to record the sub-audible sound was 15,000km away in Antarctica.

Fireball Falls From Sky, Scorches Field in Australia (Mar 3)
Officials on the Australian island of Tasmania said they have received several reports from people who saw a beam of light fall from the sky and start a fire.
Concerned residents of Claremont began reporting seeing a bright light igniting a fire in a nearby field early Saturday, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Tasmania Fire Service officer Scott Vinen said once the fire, which left a distinct burn mark, was put out an investigation into the source started.
"Once we put the fire out, we kind of walked through the fire and tried to find something," he said. "We thought a flare or something may have landed there, but we couldn't find any cause."
The Fire Service will not be investigating the incident any further, the news report said.

Dozens of people in 7 states report seeing fireball in sky Saturday, some from northern Ohio
CLEVELAND - More than two dozen people from seven states – including Ohio -- reported seeing a fireball in the sky over the weekend.
The American Meteor Society posted Monday on its website that 25 people submitted reports about the sighting Saturday, which apparently happened at about 7 p.m. Nearly half of the reports were from Ohio.
Here are a few of the narratives submitted by the observers:
“I was driving on SR 39 heading NW when I saw this very bright white ball with a tail in my left peripheral vision. I turned to look, saw it had a tail, then disappeared for a split second, then a bright flash and it was gone. Amazing and beautiful.” – Shelia H. / Millersburg, Ohio.
“Smoky trail like a com trail. the head looked like it was glowing.” – Andrea S. / Cleveland, Ohio
“This is the second time I have witnessed a meteor during the day. I regularly view meteor showers during nights they are expected. It was very exciting. Just happened to be looking in the right direction at the right time!” – Linda F. / Green, Ohio
NewsChannel5 reporter Paul Kiska saw the fireball, too. He also submitted a report:
“I've seen a few meteor showers and but never a fireball this huge, this bright, this beautiful!”
Kiska also posted this description on his Facebook page:
"Around 6:50PM Saturday, about 20 minutes ago, I just saw the most stunning, amazing meteor of my life blazing, burning & glowing from east to west mostly across the south to southwest sky. Remarkable. It really was breath taking. Angela, Olivia & I were at the park kicking the soccer ball, still twilight, and I tried to yell to them but the words didn't even come out at first then I yelled meteor meteor meteor, but they kept looking straight up, I was pointing but it was low southwest and lasted quite long time it seemed. Just beautiful."
People in Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia all posted reports.
Chief Meteorologist Mark Johnson said this was not the Comet Pan-STARRS , which was expected to be seen this past weekend as it passed by the sun.
The AMS describes itself as a “non-profit scientific organization established to inform, encourage and support the research activities of both amateur and professional astronomers who are interested in the fascinating field of meteor astronomy.”

Fireball Sweeps Across U.S. East Coast (Mar 22)
Hundreds of people from New Jersey to Florida reported seeing a brilliant streak of light shoot across the sky Friday evening.
There were immediate reports that the fireball crashed to Earth near the Maryland-Delaware state line but those reports were unconfirmed as of 8:45 p.m.
People all over Northern Virginia have reported spotting a fireball in the sky Friday night around 8 p.m. The American Meteor Society, at the time of this writing, has over 300 pending reports of a fireball.
Twitter and Facebook users described the amazing sight. @chuckywallace wrote, "Definitely saw it in Alexandria. My wife thought it was a flare! Very bright and lasted several solid seconds. There were two flashes as it continued to break apart."
Zane P., from Alexandria, wrote, "This one lasted a lot longer than most other fireballs I've seen. I expected sound as it kept getting closer, brighter and kept exploding. It exploded twice as it streaked across the sky."
“I just happened to be facing our double glass door at the time! It was huge and bright green!!!! VERY COOL!” Kristin Davis wrote on our Facebook page.
“I thought it was a firecracker!?! It was green! What was that thing??” wrote Megan Lederman.
NASA, the FAA and the National Weather Service have yet to weigh in on the sky phenomena, but the website for the American Meteor Society had 251 reports from people in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida before 8:30 p.m.

Meteor Streaks Seen Across US Sky (Mar 23)
A flash of light that streaked across the sky was believed to be a large vibrant meteor seen along the US East Coast. Others describe is as fireball because of its vibrance.
NASA has said that the large vibrant meteor which shot through the US sky on Friday evening appeared to be "a single meteor event."
The meteor travelled from west to east in the northeast sky. According to NASA expert, the flash appeared to be a fireball that moved roughly toward the southeast.
Nasa Confirms Meteor After 'Fireball' Reports
A flash of light that streaked across the sky over the east coast of the United States was probably a single meteor, Nasa has announced.
"Judging from the brightness, we're dealing with something as bright as the full moon," said Bill Cooke, who works for Nasa's Meteoroid Environmental Office.
"We basically had a boulder enter the atmosphere over the northeast."
Mr Cooke said the meteor had been widely seen, with hundreds of reports on social media like Twitter as well as the website of the American Meteor Society.
Society official Robert Lunsford said it "basically looked like a super bright shooting star".
The flash in the sky was spotted as far south as Florida and as far north as New England.
Eyewitness Matt Moore said he had been standing in line for a concert in Philadelphia around dusk when he saw a "brilliant flash moving across the sky at a very brisk pace ... and utterly silent".
"It was clearly high up in the atmosphere," he said. "But from the way it appeared, it looked like a plane preparing to land at the airport."
Mr Moore said the flash was visible to him for about two or three seconds, and then it was gone. He described it as having a "spherical shape and yellowish and you could tell it was burning, with the trail that it left behind".
Derrick Pitts, the chief astronomer at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute, agreed that the sightings had all the hallmarks of a "fireball".
Mr Pitts said this one got more attention because it happened on a Friday evening - and because Twitter had provided a way for people to share information on the sighting.
He said what people probably saw was one meteor - or a "space rock" - that may have been the size of a volleyball falling fairly far down into the Earth's atmosphere.
He likened it to a stone skipping across the water - getting a "nice long burn out of it."
Mr Pitts said experts could not be 100% certain of what it was, unless it actually fell to the ground and they could track its trajectory.
But he said the descriptions by so many people were "absolutely consistent" with those of a meteor.
