Altering Earthquakes:

ZetaTalk Aug 7, 2010

As of late, I have observed that USGS and EMSC are a bit lax on their reports of earthquakes. Sometimes not seeing anything reported for hours from the last update, or seeing periods of 90-200 minutes with no earthquakes in between. My question is, are they leaving swarms of earthquakes out of their reports, or there are actually periods of no earthquakes?

SOZT:   Greater than 90% of the earthquake activity is being altered by the USGS at present, which is under orders to prevent any clue being given to the public about the Earth changes caused by the presence of Planet X. Over a decade ago, the approach was to de-sensitize the live seismographs periodically, so the displays do not turn black worldwide, and to ignore the twice-a-day patterns showing up on these seismographs. Then any quakes that could be dropped were dropped. This was obvious to some who were watching the database manipulation. Quakes in the list would suddenly disappear. This was particularly the case where a quake happened in a remote location, or out in the ocean. Dumbing down the magnitude quickly followed, but in order to ensure the public did not notice, the USGS took control of all websites reporting quake statistics. At times, this control breaks, and discrepancies are reported to the public. Some countries rebel. Quake swarms are another source of control, as they pepper the databases with many quakes and skew the statistics, and thus are pulled from the database. Else the question is raised, why so many?   EOZT

Will the USGS internet system be a reliable warning system for the European tsunami by registering on the net the New Madrid earthquake on the exact time it occurs?

SOZT:   It will not be a lack of information from the USGS that will be the point of confusion during the earthquakes leading up to the New Madrid adjustment, it will be knowing which quake is the big one vs the many minor quakes preceding it. The USGS downgrades almost all earthquakes, to prevent meaningful statistics from being generated from their databases. They also exclude quakes whenever they can, but this is unlikely to happen in the New Madrid area as it is in the center of a populated land mass. Thus you will have magnitude 6 quakes that will be called a 5.2, magnitude 7 quakes called a 6.1, and when a magnitude 8 or greater quake occurs, it will be called a 6.9.

We would advise that rather than watching the USGS quake statistics, that you watch the Earth changes. The adjustment that will incite the European tsunami will involve bridges on the Mississippi breaking, and being impassable. The land to the west of the Mississippi will drop so that the Mississippi will become 50 miles wide in the state of Mississippi. Watch for this. The New Madrid adjustment will be several large quakes of magnitude 8-9, though will be listed as a lesser magnitude. As the N American continent continues to unzip up to and along the Seaway, the quakes will be less than a magnitude 8 but very destructive to Cleveland and Toledo and Buffalo and the inland locks along the Seaway. Thus it is not what the USGS says that should be watched, but the condition of the bridges on the Mississippi, the impact on the cities along the Seaway, and whether the inland locks are reported as inoperable.   EOZT

A second update on Sunday's radically downgraded 6.1 quake in southeast China:

Landslides Block Aid From Reaching Yunnan Quake Disaster (Aug 5)

About 10,000 troops used pickaxes and backhoes to clear roads and dig residents from collapsed homes Tuesday after an earthquake in southwest China that killed 615 people. Groups of volunteers, meanwhile, used their bare hands.

3,143 people were injured, 80,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged and 230,000 people are in need of shelter.

Wang Qiyong was desperate to get food and water to his parents trapped inside Longtoushan township, the epicentre of the earthquake which hit Yunnan province on Sunday.

Wang survived the quake and headed off soon after in search of supplies. Now, with a motorcycle loaded with goods, he was trying to make his way back to the centre of the disaster. But authorities had stopped traffic to give priority to ambulances and medical supply trucks.

The government’s supply trucks can’t get in there. I’m trying to save my parents myself, but I can’t get in either,” Wang said.

His village lies in a valley about 7km from Longtoushan, where the quake struck.

The only link from Longtoushan to the outside world is through a single muddy road, six metres across, but access has been blocked by landslides. Two bulldozers were trying to remove a boulder of the size of a minibus but without success.

Wang, 32, bought more than a 1,000 yuan (HK$1,256) worth of water, food and tents. “My parents, both over 60 years old, were trapped inside [the quake zone] overnight, with nothing to eat or drink. They slept outside on the ground in the freezing cold,” Wang told the South China Morning Post. “What they show on television makes it look like things are alright, but the reality is very different.”

Xinhua reported the provincial government had allocated 23 million yuan for emergency relief. More than 31,000 tents, 295,000 blankets, 17,000 folding beds and 25,000 coats were being delivered to affected areas.

Wang said more than 10 households in their village – mostly extended family members – were buried in the quake. Wang’s niece, who was about to enter high school, was the only other survivor. She was pulled from the rubble after being buried for more than 10 hours.

A villager in Longjing village, also in Longtoushan, said 70 per cent of houses had collapsed. Yi Shaozhen saw a huge stone strike her sister. “Her entire upper body was gone,” Yi, 35, told the Post. “The dead can be dug out slowly, but the ones alive are starving to death, as no rescue supplies have reached us,” she said amid sobs.

Residents of Longquan village yesterday had their first hot meal since the disaster struck after subsisting on dry instant noodles.

Meanwhile, authorities are trying to drain a lake, formed by falling rock and containing more than 3,000 cubic metres of water, in neighbouring Huize. It threatens to flood nearby villages, and at least 5,000 people downstream have been evacuated, state media reported. Authorities are planning to blast away a rock that is blocking a path to drain the water.

For those that like to monitor the earth changes related activity going on, I found this helpful earth activity program called earth alerts.  It can run in the background on a pc and gets alerts on just about all earth related activity going on.  It is free to use for non commercial use.  http://earthalerts.manyjourneys.com/  also has some convenient integration with google earth and google earth online.

2 Killed, 8 Injured by Double Earthquakes in Ecuador (Aug 12)

Dust rises from hillsides on August 12, 2014 in Quito, after a 5.1-magnitude earthquake rattled the Ecuadoran capital and the surrounding area causing buildings and homes to shake violently.

At least two people have been killed and eight injured as quakes caused several landslides and trapped three others in a collapsed mine.

The 5.1 earthquake has struck around 22.5 km northeast of Ecuador's capital, Quito, followed by a 4.3 magnitude aftershock.

The country's Risk Management office said firemen were working to rescue those who had been trapped in Catequilla mine.

The epicenters of both earthquakes were recorded at a depth of around 5 kilometers, according to preliminary data from the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador.

Following the quakes, the Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito suspended operations as a precaution and urged passengers to leave the terminals.

Earthquakes, many shocks in Tuscany and Marche in central Italy continues to shake [DATA]

    Sunday, August 10, 2014

Continue to shake the central Italy, where yesterday - Saturday, August 9 - began two intense seismic swarms that are continuing this morning. In the last 28-30 hours, in fact, we had 43 earthquakes in Chianti, in the heart of Tuscany, and 25 earthquakes in the Adriatic Sea, just off the coast of Ancona and the Conero, Marche. Only three of these 68 shocks were of a magnitude greater than 3.0: the strongest, both with a magnitude of 3.4, yesterday afternoon shortly before 16 in Tuscany, and last night just before 23:30 off the coast of Ancona, and then the magnitude 3.3 always off Ancona yesterday morning shortly after 07:00.

Magnitude 5.8 quake shakes southwest Mexico, no damage reported

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the southwest Mexican state of Oaxaca on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.

The quake had a depth of 10 km and its epicentre was 16 km (10 miles) west of the town of Pinotepa Nacional.

An emergency services official in Pinotepa told Reuters that no damage had been reported by its patrols, and Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said on his Twitter feed there had been no damage in the capital, Mexico City.

Short update on Bárðarbunga volcano at 02:12 UTC - ICELAND

    Posted on August 17

    http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/?p=4690

This is a short update on Bárðarbunga volcano activity.

    http://www.volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=373030

Earthquake activity continues in Bárðarbunga volcano and shows no signs of slowing down. Two swarms have appeared in Bárðarbunga volcano system. One is at location called Kistufell, while the second one is at the south-east part of the Bárðarbunga volcano. Increase in earthquake activity in south-east part of Bárðarbunga volcano seems to increase harmonic tremor. I am not sure why that is. As of now (when this is written) no eruption has been confirmed in Bárðarbunga volcano, the volcano is under glacier so confirmation is difficult at best.

Earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano. The two groups of earthquake swarms are visible on this map. Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Met Office.

Earthquake activity has been dense as can be seen here.

Rare 5.2 Earthquake in Almaty, Kazakhstan (Aug 15)

Almaty city in southern Kazakhstan has experienced a rare 5.2-magnitude earthquake on August 15.

Almaty is located near relatively young mountains in a seismologically active zone, but earthquakes of such magnitude are extremally rare. People are more of less used to 2-3-magnitude earthquake, but today's 5.2-magnitude one got many hair standing on end.

The tremor was registered at 3:42 am local time (21:42 UTC) on August 15, 2014. The earthquakes energy class was 12.0.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) graded the earthquake as strong:

The earthquake was preceded by a long low rumbling, "a very scary one", one of Almaty residents who was not asleep so late at night told Tengrinews. The rumbling was followed by a very strong tremor, with no jolts that would stand out, just tremor. The tremor seemed horizontal and lasted nonstop for 30 or 40 seconds.

Big adjustment earlier today on the North American Plate.  The one in North Dakota registered a 6.0 and the one in Idaho was a 5.0 quake.

@Shaun Those 2 EQs are not on the USGS website. Interesting.
  • Kris H

@Shaun No comments on Twitter for these EQs either. I think a 6.0 would be noticed, even in NoDak. Wonder if they were glitches?
  • Kojima

    Thanks Shaun and Kris.

The following is about magnitude in USGS Earthquake Glossary.

    Earthquake Glossary - magnitude

    http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/glossary/?term=magnitude

The magnitude is a number that characterizes the relative size of an earthquake. Magnitude is based on measurement of the maximum motion recorded by a seismograph. Several scales have been defined, but the most commonly used are (1) local magnitude (ML), commonly referred to as "Richter magnitude," (2) surface-wave magnitude (Ms), (3) body-wave magnitude (Mb), and (4) moment magnitude (Mw). Scales 1-3 have limited range and applicability and do not satisfactorily measure the size of the largest earthquakes. The moment magnitude (Mw) scale, based on the concept of seismic moment, is uniformly applicable to all sizes of earthquakes but is more difficult to compute than the other types. All magnitude scales should yield approximately the same value for any given earthquake.

The Icelandic Coast Guard surveillance plane has been called home from abroad in light of a possible eruption in Bárðarbunga volcano in the northwestern corner of Vatnajökull glacier, Southeast Iceland, ruv.is reports.

The plane, which is equipped with radar, cameras and other equipment ideal for the monitoring of eruptions

Code Orange Issued for Possible Eruption

    http://icelandreview.com/news/2014/08/18/code-orange-issued-possibl...

A Code Orange has been issued in light of increased likelihood of an eruption in Bárðarbunga volcano located in the northwestern corner of Vatnajökull glacier, Southeast Iceland, after continued earthquakes in the area this morning, mbl.is reports.

The Icelandic Met Office, which oversees not only the weather but also earthquakes and possible volcanic eruptions in Iceland, increased the danger level from yellow to orange, which indicates that the volcano shows heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption. The next and highest level code is red, which is issued when an eruption begins.

Kristín Jónsdóttir at the Iceland Met Office told RÚV that magma was on the move under the glacier, trying to break up in two different locations.

Bárðarbunga is Iceland’s second highest mountain at 2,000 meters (6,562 feet).

Indications of an imminent eruption in Bárðarbunga will likely appear several hours beforehand if an eruption begins, according to geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson.

Magnitude 3,3 earthquake in Kverkfjöll volcano- ICELAND

    Posted on August 18, 2014

A minor earthquake swarm took place in Kverkfjöll volcano today (17-August-2014). This earthquake swarm might have been triggered by the earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano that is next to it, that is however not confirmed and can be considered a speculation. Since connections between volcanoes is difficult to prove. The earthquake had the magnitude of 3,3 and depth of 9,5 km. This earthquake was felt by summer tourists in the area of Kverkfjöll volcano.

    Activity in Bárðarbunga - ICELAND

    August 17, 2014

Earthquake activity continues in Bárðarbunga volcano with no signs of stopping. Since midnight the total earthquake count for Iceland has now reached 578 (at 18:14 UTC) this number gets outdated quickly due the continuous earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano. The total amount of earthquakes recorded yesterday was around 480 for the whole day, so it seems that earthquake activity has increased today from what it was yesterday.

    Specialist remark

For the past days several events have been measured at the Bárðarbunga caldera, at 2-6 km depth. The largest one occurred this evening at 23:50 UTC, of magnitude 4.7. These events probably occur due to pressure changes when magma from a magma chamber beneath the caldera is intruding eastwards into the dyke beneath Dyngjujökull.

    Bárðarbunga caldera possibly lowering
Posted on August 21, 2014 by Jón Frímann

There are now clues that Bárðarbunga volcano caldera is getting lower. While there are no signs of imminent collapse such event might happen since this process has started. This explains the earthquake the activity in the caldera, that has been taking place for the past 48 hours.

Quote, " What this means in terms of an eruption I do not know, what I do know is that this type of event if it happens are never small and the following eruption might be huge. This is also going to change the landscape in Vatnajökull glacier forever (that is common thing in Iceland during an eruption cycles)."

There has also formed a 25 km long dyke trench in the crust that goes north-east at the moment. There are clues that it might be getting wider at this moment. It appears to have stopped going north-east for the time being.

An intrusion, 25 km long, has formed beneath Dyngjujökull, at a depth of 5-10 km

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency after a 6.0-magnitude quake jolted the Bay Area early Sunday morning, igniting fires, damaging buildings, injuring dozens, knocking out power to tens of thousands and sending residents running out of their homes in the darkness..

The quake struck near southwest of Napa at 3:20 a.m. causing houses to shake in the center of San Francisco and knocking out power to more than 50,000 houses, according to the U.S. Geological Services. The USGS briefly upgraded the magnitude to 6.1 before downgrading it. The earthquake is the largest earthquake to shake the Bay Area since the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta quake in 1989, the USGS said.

"There's collapses, fires," said Napa Fire Capt. Doug Bridewell, standing in front of large pieces of masonry that broke loose from a turn of the century office building where a fire had just been extinguished. "That's the worst shaking I've ever been in."

Dazed residents too fearful of aftershocks to go back to bed wandered at dawn through Napa's historic downtown, where the quake had shorn a 10-foot chunk of bricks and concrete from the corner of an old county courthouse. Bolder-sized pieces of rubble littered the lawn and street in front of the building and the hole left behind allowed a view of the offices inside.

Napa Fire Department Operations Chief John Callahan said that the city has exhausted its own resources extinguishing six fires, transporting injured residents, searching homes for anyone who might be trapped and answering calls about gas leaks, water main breaks and downed power lines.

Two of the fires happened at mobile home parks, including one where four homes were destroyed and two others damaged, Callanan said.

There were at least 50 aftershocks, including four that were larger than 2.0 magnitude in Napa, ranging in size from 2.5 to 3.6 magnitude, according to the Geological Survey. USGS said between 30 and 70 small aftershocks could hit the area during the next week.

Dozens injured, 3 critically, after strong earthquake in California

(CNN) -- A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California early Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit the Bay Area since 1989, when a quake struck during the World Series.

Sunday's earthquake struck 4 miles northwest of American Canyon, 6 miles southwest of Napa, and 9 miles southeast of Sonoma, according to the USGS.

The USGS estimated, based on their locations, that 15,000 people experienced severe shaking, 106,000 people felt very strong shaking, 176,000 felt strong shaking, and 738,000 felt moderate shaking.

"I've got a lot of broken wine, being here in Napa," said Emily Massimi, who was woken up by the quake. "We tend to collect wine, so I have wine all over my kitchen, and glass, and pictures off the wall and books off of bookshelves," she told CNN.

At Silver Oak Winery, owner David Silver spent the morning cleaning up hundreds of broken wine bottles that fell off the shelves.

"Those bottles were very unique," he said. They were part of his private collection and worth hundreds of dollars. "It's a tragedy, but it's nothing we can't overcome." Silver said he plans to open the winery today.

    Major quake in southwestern Peru

A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Peru Sunday, US experts said.

The quake hit at 2321 GMT 42 kilometers (26 miles) east-northeast of Tambo at a depth of 58.9 kilometers, the US Geological Survey said.

Located 471 kilometers southeast of the capital Lima, it hit at 23:21 GMT. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center cautioned that earthquakes of this size "sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter."

5.4 quake hits Iceland volcano - August 30

Picture shows magma along a 1-km-long fissure in a lava field north of the Vatnajokull glacier, which covers part of Bardarbunga volcano system, August 29, 2014.

    Reuters

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - A large earthquake hit Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano system early on Saturday, but there was no sign of a fresh eruption, the country's Meteorological Office said.

Authorities have been on alert since a surge of small quakes there this month triggered memories of the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed out ash and shut down much of Europe's airspace.

A magnitude 5.4 quake was recorded under Bardarbunga's main volcano at 0703 GMT, said Icelandic Met Office seismologist Martin Hensch.

It came a day after a small eruption in a fissure in a glacier about 40km (25 miles) from the main crater in Iceland's largest volcano system.

The Met office initially raised its aviation warning to red, its highest level, on Friday, then reduced it to orange and removed all airspace restrictions after the eruption stopped.

Hensch said there were currently no signs of magma heading back to the surface, though it was impossible to predict how the situation would develop.

"There are so many parameters in this system," he said. "We cannot make a forecast for the next hours or the next few days. So we have to continue to monitor and react to events when they happen."

    http://yle.fi/uutiset/swedish_earthquake_shakes_parts_of_finland/74...

An unusually strong earthquake in central Sweden on Monday was also felt in Finland.

The University of Helsinki’s Institute of Seismology says that an earthquake occurred shortly after 4 pm in central Sweden, with a magnitude of 5.2 on the open-ended Richter scale (Swedish institute rates it at 4.1). It says the temblor took place some 10 kilometres under the earth’s surface

The institute adds there were a number of observations of the quake in the Pirkanmaa and Satakunta regions of south-western and central Finland. There was also an observation in Vantaa that was likely related to the Swedish quake.

    It couldn't happen here?

According to Matti Tarvainen of the Institute of Seismology a quake of this size has apparently never taken place in Finland, and according to current models would be impossible here.

Update 14:55 UTC: No similar earthquake recorded in this part of Sweden in the last 50 years, but an earthquake with the magnitude M4.3 occurred in the southern part of Sweden in 2008 and was also widely felt.

Update 14:30 UTC: First damaging reports in Swedish media: cracked walls have been observed.

    So here we have 3 differents readings!!! 5.2 / 4.1 and a 4.7

Quake strikes northeast of Tokyo, no reports of serious damage

TOKYO (Reuters) - An earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 5.6 shook buildings in eastern Japan, including the capital Tokyo, on Tuesday but there were no reports of serious damage.

The earthquake was centred in Ibaraki Prefecture, just northeast of Tokyo, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. The depth of the earthquake was 50 km and there was no risk of a tsunami, it added.

Japan Atomic Power Co and Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) <9501.T> reported no irregularities at their three nuclear plants in eastern Japan.

A Japan Atomic official said there have been no irregularities at the 1.1-gigawatt Tokai Daini plant, which has been shut since May 2011. A Tepco spokeswoman said there has been no irregularities at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant, wrecked by the March 2011 quake and tsunami, and Fukushima-Daini plant, which has been shut since March 2011.

Earthquake Swarm Destroys Homes in Southern Philippines (Sept 20)

A series of earthquakes destroyed 17 houses and damaged 66 others Saturday in a southern Philippine town.

The seismology institute recorded more than a dozen earthquakes striking minutes apart.

A 5.2 magnitude quake caused most of the damage in one mountain village, said Eduardo Buenacosa, disaster officer of Makilala municipality in North Cotabato province.

Local officials were preventing residents of houses that were destroyed from returning home because of the danger of a collapse, he said.

Residents of the worst-hit mountain village of Luayon, where 45 houses were damaged and 15 destroyed, were celebrating its foundation day with a program at which provincial Gov. Emmylou Mendoza was a guest when the strongest earthquake struck.

    https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=it&tl=en&js=y&...

Earthquake felt Etna a few minutes ago, at precisely 18:33 hours when a magnitude 3.3 seismic movement has affected the eastern slope of the volcano, with its epicenter between Acireale, Pedara and Zafferana. The quake was very shallow, with a hypocenter of only 1.9km, so it was felt distinctly in the areas closest to the epicenter: Acireale, even, people took to the streets. At the moment there are no reported damage.
