Moscow (CNN)Just over a week ago, President Vladimir Putin said Russia had the spread of coronavirus "under control." Now the country is changing tactics, as authorities acknowledge they are gearing up for a major Covid-19 outbreak.

In a nationwide address Wednesday, Putin conceded that it was "objectively impossible to stop [coronavirus] from spilling over" into a country of Russia's size. He urged Russians to "understand the complexity of the situation" and stay home, declaring next week to be a paid stay-at-home holiday.
It was a classic presidential performance, but Putin stopped short of delivering a bitter pill to the public. While he announced a number of measures to bolster the country's economy and encouraged citizens to stay home, he left it to other officials to announce more sweeping lockdown measures CONTINUE ...
Feeling 'caged' by coronaviru…tag:poleshift.ning.com,2020-03-08:3863141:Comment:11041852020-03-08T19:30:52.314Zjorge namourhttps://poleshift.ning.com/profile/jorgenamour

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Saying he felt “caged,” Pope Francis delivered his Sunday blessing over the internet from inside the Vatican on Sunday instead of from a window to stop crowds gathering during Italy’s coronavirus outbreak.

He did, however, go to the window and wave silently to a mere several hundred people in the huge square, which often draws tens of thousands. Most kept a safe distance from each other as they watched the pope deliver the address on four mega-screens.

“It’s a bit strange this Angelus prayer today with the pope caged in the library, but I see you and I am close to you,” he said.

It was the first time that Francis had skipped giving the blessing and reading an address from the window since his election in 2013, apart from times he was traveling outside Rome.

Some pilgrims had come a long way hoping to get the blessing directly.

“I am bitterly disappointed,” said Pamela Kennedy, 66, of Yukon, Oklahoma, who was in the square with her husband, Bill.

Italy has imposed a virtual lockdown across a swathe of its wealthy north, including the financial capital Milan, in its latest attempt to contain a growing outbreak of coronavirus. The government has also imposed other restrictions throughout the country, such as the closing of museums.

A Vatican source said the Vatican museums, which get six million visitors a year, would be closed as of Monday.
Lufthansa Airliners suspends…tag:poleshift.ning.com,2020-03-05:3863141:Comment:11044782020-03-05T14:48:59.108Zjorge namourhttps://poleshift.ning.com/profile/jorgenamour

(CNN)The White House coronavirus task force is expressing "great concern" there will be more person-to-person transmissions of the disease after two deaths on American soil -- a message that strongly contrasts with President Donald Trump's earlier rosy forecasts about the situation.

Top administration officials are also going out of their way to show they are ramping up to counter the widening threat as new cases spring up from coast to coast. Trump, for instance, says he plans to meet leaders from the pharmaceutical industry at the White House on Monday to discuss the search for a vaccine. "Progress being made!" the President tweeted.
