A crane tipped off its tracks on the Port Mann bridge construction project east of Vancouver on Friday morning and dropped a segment of the bridge into the Fraser River.

Bridge project spokesman Max Logan said the gantry crane, which is designed to move on rails, is secure and nobody was hurt, but a 90-tonne section of the bridge deck the crane was moving fell into the Fraser River.

The segment struck a pile as it fell and is now submerged in the river. It is unclear whether the segment can be recovered.

The bridge segments are brought in by barge and lifted into place by the special 720-tonne horizontal gantry crane, which is also called a segment launcher.

Logan said one of the supports for the gantry appears to have been crushed and the gantry pitched forward.

It is unclear how long the mishap will delay the project, but the contractor Kiewit is responsible for any costs that result.

The Trans-Canada Highway remains open on the old Port Mann Bridge and there are no reports of any injuries.

When completed, the $800-million bridge will provide 10-lane crossing of the Fraser River for the Trans-Canada Highway east of Vancouver. It is scheduled to be completed in 2013.

Crane falls at Mich. construction site; 3 hurt

A 250-foot-tall crane collapsed Friday morning onto a building at a construction site at the Kent County jail complex in Grand Rapids, injuring three people, authorities said.

The jail was placed on lockdown following the incident. Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess described the injuries to a construction worker and two Kent County jail trustees as minor, The Grand Rapids Press (http://bit.ly/ziaMEe) reported.

Both the department construction company officials said all inmates and workers were accounted for.

Construction company Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. said Friday in a statement it was investigating the cause of the accident and had no further information. Hess said it appears that a cable snapped as the crane was carrying cement.

Images from the scene showed part of the crane leaning against a building. A garage area where sheriff's vehicles are kept was damaged.

The main jail that houses inmates apparently wasn't damaged, and Hess said authorities were checking the structural integrity of that building.

The crane that fell has been used for seven months on a $27 million renovation project, Hess said.

  • Terrifying video shows it turn and fall in high winds and send sparks into the air
  • Crane operator, who was inside at the time, was taken to hospital with injuries
  • Video was filmed in Perm, a city about 1,400 kilometres east of Moscow

This is the heart-stopping moment a crane collapses next to a Russian tower block and flattens a small house.

Terrifying video shows the monstrous structure turn and fall in high winds, before sending sparks and a huge plume of smoke billowing into the air.

The collapse which happened in Perm, a city about 1,400 kilometres east of Moscow, left its operator in hospital with numerous injuries as he had been in the crane at the time.

Horrifying video, caught by a witness sitting in their car, shows the yellow crane turn before bending at the base.

It tumbles to the ground sending up sparks as it hits the fences surrounding a tower block.

A man is then seen walking away from the scene of devastation on Reshetnikov Street while another walks towards it in surprise and alarm.

As well as injuries to its operator, a witness said several houses were damaged and a one-story home was flattened.

A witness posted this video on social media earlier this week.

4 killed after crane collapses in Yavneh

4 workers killed when crane collapses at construction site.

19/05/19

Four people were killed when a crane collapsed at a construction site on Jabotinsky Boulevard in Yavneh.

Rescue forces worked to rescue an injured worker who was trapped on the crane, but his death was ultimately confirmed.

MDA Paramedic Alon Malma said: "This is a large construction site with two residential buildings with a crane in the center, the rear part of the crane broke down and collapsed on the ground."

"Workers who were nearby were severely injured in all parts of their bodies, and during operations to evacuate them we carried out medical examinations, but they were without signs of life and we had no choice but to determine their deaths," he said.

"Another worker who was trapped on the crane at a height of dozens of meters is being rescued at this moment by the firefighters who arrived at the site," Malma added but, as mentioned, the worker later died of his injuries.

Seattle crane collapse leaves 4 dead, 3 hurt, 6 cars damaged: fire department

The collapse of a construction crane in downtown Seattle on Saturday has left four people dead, three people hurt and five cars crushed, the fire department tweeted.

The collapse of a construction crane in downtown Seattle on Saturday has left four people dead, four people hurt and six cars pinned under it.

Two of the people who died were crane operators, said Fire Chief Harold Scoggins.

Two others who died were in separate vehicles. Three of the dead were males, one was female.

Firefighters arrived after the victims had died.

The three patients who were hurt in the collapse were taken to hospital.

A mother and her four-month-old child were hurt and taken to hospital, but they’re believed to be in “satisfactory” condition, according to the Seattle Times.

Another was treated on scene and not transported, the fire department said.

The crane collapsed at about 3:30 p.m. PT, at Fairview Avenue North and Mercer Street in the city’s South Lake Union area.

Mike McCuaig, transportation chair with the South Lake Community Council, said the crane was being dismantled when it collapsed.

“The construction crane on the top of the building was being dismantled this afternoon and my understanding was in the process of dismantling, the crane fell to the ground on the south side of the building,” he said.

A secondary crane was helping with the dismantling, he added.

Winds were also blowing at the time that the crane fell but it’s not clear whether that was a factor in the collapse, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.

One of the people injured was a 27-year-old man in serious condition, another was treated at the site of the collapse.

The collapse happened at a building that was set to house a new Google Seattle campus, as well as over 100 new apartments, the Times added.

Construction was to wrap up later this year, after having started in 2017.

Seattle had 60 construction cranes as of January, more than in any American city.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee tweeted that his “heart goes out to the family and friends of the four people who died in this terrible accident.”

Mercer Street is expected to remain closed from Fairview Avenue N to 9th Avenue N until Sunday, said the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).
