WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.

Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.

Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.

He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.

Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.

The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."

"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."

She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.

"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.

With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline

04/06/2017

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.

It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING

http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.

What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

BREAKING NEWS: Road Collapses in Liguria, Italy

The Liguria continues to pay the consequences of the floods of recent weeks. In the morning a new collapse, probably also caused by the new rain that fell yesterday, occurred on the road sp15, in the upper Trebbia valley.

A large stretch of roadway has collapsed, as can be seen from the images. The road had already been closed, so there was no risk to people. As explained to Agi Franco Senarega, delegate for the mobility of the Metropolitan City of Genoa: “We had noticed a significant damage to a wing wall of the road and this led to its immediate closure. Today this damage has revealed itself in all its importance because that wall has collapsed”.

Senarega said: “we are doing the planning of the intervention on the infrastructure, which is not at all trivial, and in parallel, we are looking for the source of financing”.

“we had already started a confrontation with both the Liguria Region and the MIT because on that road important interventions were planned, with dedicated financing”.

Tunnel collapses in China killing at least four and trapping workers inside

November 28 2019

Unstable conditions complicating efforts to rescue those remaining

A highway tunnel under construction in southwestern China has collapsed, killing four people and leaving another eight missing, authorities have said.

Water and mud burst from the tunnel as work was underway Tuesday evening in the Yunnan province city of Lincang, trapping 13 workers inside.

The news office of the Lincang city government said five were pulled from the rubble, but only one survived and was hospitalised in stable condition.

Waterlogged and unstable conditions were complicating rescue work.

Sniffer dogs and life detection machines were deployed and a medical team was on standby at the site.

China suffers frequent industrial accidents despite efforts to improve safety training and inspections.

Last month, an underground car park under construction in southwest China collapsed, killing eight people.

In March, a massive chemical blast left nearly 80 people dead in one of China’s worst industrial accidents in recent years.

Highway bridge collapses in northern Italy after landslide

November 24, 2019 3:28 PM EST

MILAN — A motorway bridge collapsed on Sunday in Italy’s northwestern region of Liguria near the coastal city of Savona, following a massive landslide caused by recent heavy rain.

No casualties had been reported to date, SIAS, the company which operates the A6 highway linking the coast to Turin, said in a statement.

“Everyone’s effort at this stage is aimed at confirming that this is the case” Autostrada dei Fiori, a unit of SIAS, said.

SIAS said the collapse of around 20 metres of the 50-metre long viaduct located just outside Savona came after an “exceptional” landslide caused by days of heavy rain.

The landslide originated from a mountain which overlooks the motorway and hit one of the pillars of the bridge at around 2 p.m. (1300 GMT), SIAS said, adding that it was not responsible for the condition of the mountain.

Earlier on Sunday, Liguria’s president Giovanni Toti said at a news conference that the bridge collapse might have affected one car but that he had no evidence and searches were continuing.

Liguria is the same region where a motorway bridge collapsed last year in Genoa, killing 43 people. Known as the Morandi Bridge, it was operated by Autostrade per l’Italia, a unit of infrastructure group Atlantia.

Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in northern Italy this month.

SIAS said the motorway had been shut in both directions, although only one of the two separate carriageways had collapsed while first assessments indicated the other was undamaged.

Toti said that a local road near the motorway had also been washed away by the landslide.

Two dead, several feared missing in French bridge collapse

https://www.chinadailyasia.com/articles/169/122/101/1574128975204.h...

MIREPOIX-SUR-TRN (France), Nov 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A 15-year-old girl was killed after a suspension bridge over a river in southwest France collapsed on Monday, causing a car, a truck and possibly a third vehicle to plunge into the water, local authorities said.

Four people were rescued but several others were feared missing after the collapse of the bridge between Mirepoix-sur-Tarn and Bessieres, 30km north of Toulouse, said fire service and local security chief Etienne Guyot.

The central part of the 155m bridge, measuring 6.5m wide, was submerged by the fast-flowing Tarn river.

A car bonnet could be seen sticking out of the water as helicopters circled overhead and emergency workers in inflatable boats searched for survivors.

More than 60 emergency service members, including divers, were taking part in the rescue operation, Guyot told reporters, adding there were “probably several missing”.

Among those feared missing were the truck driver and the driver of a potential third vehicle, Guyot said, adding that witnesses had reported seeing a van on the bridge.

The dead girl was travelling by car across the bridge with her mother when it collapsed.

Her body was retrieved from the river, which is 100m wide and more than 20m deep at the level of the bridge.

The girl’s mother was pulled alive from the sunken car by bystanders, some of whom were badly injured in the rescue attempt.

Two rescue workers were also seriously hurt, according to the region’s security department.

An investigation into the cause of the accident was underway.

The bridge, dated to 1931, had a load limit of 19 tonnes and was “regularly checked”, Guyot said.

The Haute-Garonne department council said the bridge had undergone a “thorough” inspection in 2017, which had shown “no structural problem”.

Mirepoix-sur-Tarn mayor Eric Oget described it as a “very important crossing point” for people going to work in the regionla capital Toulouse on the other side of the river.

Many pedestrians used the bridge, he said, describing the collapse as a “real trauma” for the local population. — NNN-AGENCIES

SINGAPORE - At least 26 Singaporeans were injured after a bridge in a 4.5-star hotel in Batam collapsed on Thursday afternoon (Nov 7).

The Indonesian police said earlier that 18 Singaporeans were hurt, but community self-help group Mendaki said in a statement on Friday that 26 of its employees were injured in the incident.

The 26 employees were in Batam for a retreat to discuss work plans for next year. They were treated in Batam, but two of them will need further medical care in Singapore, Mendaki said.

The other 24 staff members suffered only light injuries and were treated as outpatients.

The Straits Times understands that they are on their way back to Singapore, and that about 100 Mendaki staff were in Batam for the retreat.

Mendaki added that it is in contact with the family members of those injured, and thanked the Singapore consulate in Batam as well as staff at Montigo Resorts Nongsa, where the incident happened, for their help.

According to news site Detik.com, Colonel S. Erlangga, the Riau Islands provincial police spokesman, said that the wooden foundations of the bridge probably decayed, which led to the bridge's collapse.

Some of the victims were also taking selfies when the bridge collapsed, Detik reported.

A local hospital staff said one of the victims with serious injuries probably had a fractured bone in the right foot, while the other likely suffered a fractured bone in the ribs.

Police conducted their investigations at the resort and interviewed a number of witnesses after the incident, which occurred just after 4pm.

Serious traffic disruption in county Limerick town after bridge collapse

TRAFFIC has been seriously disrupted in Newcastle West following the collapse of a wall at the Bridge of Tears early this Monday morning.

A large section of the  left side of the 19th century bridge fell into the river after being damaged by a vehicle.

The bridge is now closed to outbound traffic. Instead traffic heading for Charleville, Broadford, Dromcollogher and Castlemahon will be diverted from the roundabout to the next left-hand junction where they double back along the R522 , at the rear of the Longcourt House Hotel, to the roundabout at Rathina.

However, incoming traffic will not be affected and can cross the new bridge constructed alongside the Bridge of Tears as normal.

Diversions will be clearly signposted, a spokesman for Limerick City and County Council said, adding that the council "regrets any inconvenience caused."

“It is completely gone. The whole left side of the bridge is gone into the river,” said Cllr Michael Collins who posted a photo on social media. It will be a serious job to repair it, he added.

The bridge predates the Famine, according to Cllr Jerome Scanlan, and got its name as it was where emigrants left their friends and family before heading out on the old Cork Road to Cobh (Queenstown) and the emigrant ships.

“It is sad to see the history and heritage disappear into the river,” he said.

Woman who 'felt footbridge moving underneath her' narrowly escaped its collapse

Julie Powell, 34, was walking home with her dog when she felt the bridge moving under her feet

15:54, 4 NOV 2019

A woman claims she felt a footbridge moving under her before she narrowly escaped its collapse.

Julie Powell, 34, was walking home with her dog when she noticed the strength of the current at Millmead Lock, Shalford, Surrey.

She began filming to show her husband, before having to run from Guildford's Millmead Lock footbridge as it collapsed into the River Wey, Surrey Live reports.

The incident happened at around 2.45pm on Saturday, November 2.

The river level has dropped significantly since the bridge's collapse.

Local authorities, firefighters and police were at the scene in the evening to cordon the area off from the public.

Mrs Powell said: “I was walking back home with my dog and started filming on the bridge because I could see the water and the current was really strong.

“I was focusing on the video on my phone and then I felt the bridge moving under my feet.

“I walk this way often and the current on the left of the bridge seemed really unusual.

"I wanted to take a video to show my husband, but then it all happened really quickly and suddenly it fell. My dog ran off to my right and first alerted me.

“It was scary. It is fine now, but you do think about what might have happened.”

The video shows just how close her escape was as she turns to see the bridge crumble into the river.
