Bearing in mind that when disasters strike, water may not be readily available, so flushing toilets will not work and whatever water is available, will need to be used to wash hands and for other personal use.

Latrines and makeshift toilets are usually several feet away from the living area (at least 50 feet) not only to prevent smell/odours from reaching the living/encampment area, but also to prevent disease from spreading. It also makes sense to put the latrine downhill from an encampment in case of leakage. Buckets will need to to be cleaned every day, where as a hole in the ground can be covered in dirt until it's full. Holes in the ground can be as deep as 3 to 5 feet deep with a platform and can take up to a year to fill - depending on the frequency of use. Making a simple hut and seating platform can be utilized for more frequent use. Covering the human waste with soil to prevent smell is also recommended. The hut when the hole is full, can then be moved to above a new hole and the same process can begin again. The old hole can be covered up marked and eventually used as compost as the waste breaks down over the year of last day of usage.

Camping toilets will also be useful but are limited because of their capacity and height - so may be better for children to use. Some camping toilets can be adapted to be placed onto the top of buckets to raise the height or adapted to suit the use at the time as needed.

There are also more complex systems, for people who are more prepared or who have the available materials - the following is a series of videos on composting toilets.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=composting+human+waste

Here are also some other more elaborate solutions for latrine use:

The Toilet- One can easily build an outhouse and even connect it to the home through a door, for times when the dreaded, constipating hike through inclement weather dissuades prompt evacuation. But there will be odours and insect infestations and if the pit below the floor is not sealed well after each evacuation, every effort should be made to NEVER, ever peer into that pit to investigate the smell, no matter what! There is a reason ‘out’- houses are sited away from dwellings. Enough said.

After outhouses, a Composting Toilet will sound comparatively like a dream. That’s because odours are very low or non-existent. And one can evacuate casually, without worrying about insect swarms buzzing your behind! Plus, after 6 months of sitting idle in a 5 gal. bucket, the waste will transform itself- courtesy of transported gut bacteria, into rich, garden compost.

The composting toilet below is intended for use inside the home.

Start with construction of a box, to house the 5-gallon waste bucket.

Short video on one couple’s solution: DIY composting toilet

Measure box height to accommodate a 5-gallon bucket, then add 2.5 inches more; this is to ensure the bucket rim clears the urine diverter when it’s centred under the hole of the lid.

Using a 5 gallon bucket for the waste is most expedient, because after 25 days or so, it can be lifted easily from the box and put out of the way for 2-4 months, with a screened cover over it.

For the latter, lay a section of aluminium screen over the full bucket and push a hoop made of tubing- Pex works ideally for this application, over the rim and screening, to keep out flies while the bucket of compost cures.

Sri Lanka raids private warehouses after declaring a state of emergency due to food shortages

Sri Lankan government raided private warehouses outside capital Colombo to seize thousands of tonnes of sugar last week. The raids came a day after the country declaring a state of emergency due to food shortages.

Major General Senarath Niwunhella, who was named commissioner-general of essential services told AFP at least 13 000 tonnes of white and brown sugar were found in the raids.1

"Today we started with sugar and will expand this action to other commodities like wheat flour and rice too if importers do not release their stocks to the market," he said.

Niwunhella said the objective of the raids is to prevent hoarding, adding that seized stocks will be given to state-owned retail stores to sell for below the open market price.

AFP reported the country is experiencing sharp price rises for rice, onions, and potatoes, while long queues have formed outside stores because of shortages of milk powder, kerosene oil, and cooking gas.

Experts blame the food crisis on a shortage of foreign exchange to import and maintain buffer stocks.

The country’s foreign reserves plummeted to $2.8 billion by the end of July from $7.5 billion in November 2019.2

ZetaTalk on June 10, 2021
At the same latitude as many of the volcanoes in the Aleutian chain, this area of Saskatchewan receives the vapors from air that has passed over the volcanoes. The prevailing Westerly winds are steady. This is indeed Manna, described during the last Pole Shift by the Jews wandering the desert near the Mediterranean volcanoes. As we noted, gather quickly before any rains can wash the Manna away or before the many critters hungry for these sweet carbs have arrived. The Manna can also be collected by placing in clear water, drinking the milk formed afterwards.

Here at 52 degrees North in Saskatchewan we had what was thought to be sap from the trees in the garden due to the drought - it turned out to be Manna from Heaven! It covered only a portion of the garden, covering the trees some of the weeds and roses and the ground nearby in a thin film. The trees were covered in a sticky shiny substance, clear and sweet smelling that did not rub off easily either when touched or on the clothes. It also tasted a little sweet when licked off a leaf.

The Manna fell onto the garden in mid-late May when the weather was transitioning from cooler to warmer air and we had a lot of dew on the ground. While the Manna from Heaven did stick to the ground, we did not scrape if off the leaves and plants it fell on as we didn't know what it was. Later, we had rain at the beginning of June and it washed some of it away, leaving a slightly less sticky film on the plants and leaves. We've also noted as the Manna from Heaven substance is now decaying - there is a sickly sweet smell coming from certain areas of the garden.

We have included a small list of edible plants and trees the Manna from Heaven fell on in our garden.

Elm trees - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulmus_pumila

Clearly visible is the sticky shiny substance - Manna from Heaven on the leaves.

Highbush cranberries - https://plants.dutchgrowers.com/11040002/Plant/506/Highbush_Cranberry/

The leaves of the Highbush Cranberry are still shiny - with recent rains the Manna from Heaven has mostly washed off the leaves.

ZetaTalk: Manna from Heaven
Note: written on Aug 15, 1996.

It is generally assumed that hydrocarbons such as petrochemicals are formed under extreme heat and pressure, conditions that mankind assumes can only take place under the surface of the earth where biological elements might be sandwiched between layers of the Earth's surface. They also form in the air during every passage of the 12th Planet, as all the components are in the atmosphere - carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. During a pole shift, violent volcanic explosions take place, super-heating the air passing overhead. Combined with continuous lightning flashes in some places, many chemicals form readily which under ordinary circumstances do not form in the atmosphere. Some of these chemicals are what humans term petrochemicals, but their close cousins, carbohydrates, form also.

It is written in many parts of the world that after a pole shift, what the Jews called manna was found lying on the ground in the morning dew. Beads of carbohydrates that tasted like honey, and where landing on water turned the water milky, so that those lands where this occurred were sometimes known as the lands of milk and honey.

Not all locations find this handy food delivered for breakfast, and not all such food can be gathered and eaten by the eager humans, as there is competition from the bugs and rodents in the area who seem to need less sleep than the weary and malnourished humans scrambling about in the gloom upon rising. Manna is formed and dropped in those parts of the world where the air has just passed over active volcanoes. It is formed to some degree during normal times, but becomes pronounced after a pole shift due to the exponential increase in volcanic activity. Other parts of the world find no such gift beading the ground in the dawn, and residents of those parts that are fortunate in this regard must rise early and scramble if they are to collect any manna at all. Not only is it eaten by anything that can crawl, it also melts and seeps into the ground during the heat of the day.

Survival techniques before and into the After Time will be a valuable resource not only for individuals but for groups as well. Basic every day techniques such as sewing, baking, making a latrine to building a shelter and distilling water will be needed. Knowing how to make a fire from animal dung to re-purposing fabrics to make them fit someone else or made use of in other ways, will be much needed skills. Zetatalk and Troubled times covers a vast area of topics on survival. There are also videos that cover a large portion of survival techniques. Researching will be a personal preference on what is needed or required for your own use and location. A quick rule of thumb is surviving 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food. As always check your safe location and know your local area.

In many countries, eating bugs, grubs and worms as well as what we term weeds,is part of a normal daily diet. As the Earth changes start to take a hold and increased crop shortages become the norm, new food sources will be sought after and utilized in daily diets. For those who have back gardens or go to parks etc, they will notice that dandelions, goosefoot, and mushrooms along with other wild edibles are readily available.

For instance the whole of the dandelion plant can be eaten, providing a lot of nutrition. That creeping garden weed, chickweed is a lively peppery addition to salads. That pervasive variegated plant in the corner of the garden - groutwart - the leaves can be eaten just like spinach. There are many surprising plants and insects that provide the nutrition we need when food is scarse.

There are plenty of plants and insects that provide delicious meals and snacks. What has been included here is just a sample, showing how to prepare, cook and eat wild edibles and insects. As always safety comes first and safety tips for collecting wild edibles and insects has been included.

Damage to downtown Calgary's electrical system from a fire Saturday will require a rebuild, not just repairs, said Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

Nenshi spoke to media Sunday afternoon in a press conference from the Calgary Emergency Management Agency headquarters to provide an update after an underground electrical fire caused a power outage in a large part of the downtown core affecting approximately 2,100 businesses and 5,000 residents.

The areas affected by the power outage are outlined in green and the security perimeter is in effect in the area outlined in pink. (City of Calgary)

"This is going to take time," he said. "We're not talking about a repair. We're talking about a rebuild of a large amount of infrastructure."

The estimate from Enmax is that power will be restored sometime between Wednesday evening and Saturday evening.

The damage from an underground fire in downtown Calgary Saturday night was extensive, "completely destroying" the electrical infrastructure involved, the utility company said.

Because of the extent of the damage, utility crews will have to replace not only the damaged part of the electrical system, but also many connecting parts from across the city.

The city has been issuing updates on the situation on its Twitter feed @cityofcalgary.

Early Monday, it said that the outage might result in low water pressure of water being cut off completely, especially in upper floor units. Water wagons have been deployed throughout downtown. A map of where each is located can be found on the city website.

Stay home, mayor tells downtown workers

The mayor said Sunday that employers in the affected area should tell their employees not to come into work on Tuesday.

He says the city will assess whether to advise other workers outside the affected area to also avoid coming to work downtown when the work week resumes after the Thanksgiving break.

"It will not be possible. It will not be possible early this week for there to be business as usual in those affected areas," Nenshi said.

"There will be major disruptions to the affected area until the infrastructure is rebuilt."

One of the buildings affected is the Calgary Courts Centre. It will remain closed until Friday. During that time, emergency applications will be dealt with by a Queens Bench justice at the Court of Appeal, which is in the TransCanada Pipelines Tower.

Warnings about indoor generators

Nenshi noted that if employees needed to get into offices to pick up files or laptops, it should be arranged outside of rush hour.

Nenshi advised business owners to start implementing their business continuity plans, if they have not done so already.

Employers should be talking with their employees just as landlords should be speaking to tenants, he said.

While there are several evacuations underway for carbon monoxide buildup in parts of the affected area, only one person has been injured so far.

A nearby ATCO employee was injured in the fire and suffered minor burns, Enmax CEO Gianna Mannis said.

That employee was taken to local hospital for treatment.

Nenshi also urged Calgarians in the affected area to exercise good judgment given there is no power to ventilation systems.

In particular, he says people should not run generators indoors or keep their car running in underground garages because they could get sick from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Calgarians reaching out to help

Nenshi made a point to highlight the support Calgarians have been offering each other in light of the power outage.

"We again see the incredible spirit of the people who call this place home," he said, calling out the#YYCthanks hashtag on Twitter, where people are offering up showers, charging stations and food storage for those without power.

The fire has affected some landline 911 service. The fire damaged a fibre optic cable, though it wasn't immediately clear what services that may have disrupted.

The province issued a critical emergency alert Sunday morning at 10:07 a.m. local time to let residents know some landline phones in the downtown core will not be able to access 911 as a result of the outage.

However, the 911 centre itself is still working and anyone trying to contact dispatchers for an emergency is advised to use their cellphone or another person's cellphone.

Enmax says there are 1,900 sites with meters in 112 buildings that are without power.

Power was shut down to the area around Eighth Street S.W. and Fifth Avenue as a safety precaution, Enmaxsays.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and Enmax says it is too early to estimate cost of damages.

Roads still closed downtown

A large section of the downtown core remains closed to traffic and it's not clear when it will reopen.

The areas closed are between Fourth Street and 11th Street S.W. and Fourth Avenue and Seventh Avenue S.W.

Traffic lights in the area were initially out, but power to those has been restored.

City officials are working with police to assess when roads can reopen.

Once that happens, traffic will be allowed to run, but will still be restricted around the electrical vault area where the fire broke out.

Enmax and fire crews remain on scene.

As well, C-Train service is back up and running in the core but several bus routes are detouring around the affected area.

Water quality still safe

Despite the outage, the City of Calgary says water quality remains high and people affected by the outage can still use water — if it is available.

The area of the outage contains many high-rise buildings and the lack of power may mean a loss of pressure and water supply to high-floor units.

City crews are getting ready to provide emergency potable water wagons for those without running water as needed.

There are no food donations required at this time.

Prepare for power surge, Nenshi warns

The damage is different from what Calgarians saw one month ago after a freak summer snowstorm knocked out power to thousands.

Enmax says the snowstorm knocked out individual connections to each meter, while the fire has significantly damaged the underground system itself.

As repairs are made, Enmax crews will bring customers back onto the grid one at a time.

Nenshi says residents without power are being advised to unplug all electrical appliances and stoves to prepare for a power surge when their section of the grid is re-energized.

Nenshi is also urging Calgarians to reach out to affected friends and family to provide Thanksgiving dinner and a place to stay.

(CNN) -- Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever observed, made landfall Friday morning in the Philippines, the country's weather service reported.

Thousands of people in vulnerable areas of the central Philippines were evacuated as the monster storm spun toward the country.

With sustained winds of 315 kph (195 mph) and gusts as strong as 380 kph (235 mph), Haiyan churned across the Western Pacific into the Philippines.

Its wind strength makes it equivalent to an exceptionally strong Category 5 hurricane.

Haiyan will move over the many islands of the central Philippines over the next 18 hours before exiting into the South China Sea overnight Friday into Saturday. Haiyan will weaken slightly as the storm crosses land, but forecasters with the Philippine weather agency, Pagasa, predict that it will maintain super typhoon intensity throughout its passage of the islands.

The storm, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, is so large in diameter that clouds from it are affecting two-thirds of the country, which extends over 1,850 kilometers (1,150 miles)...

Typhoon Haiyan, the world's strongest storm of the year, has made landfall in the Philippines with winds of up to 235 km/h (146mph).

The category-five storm was centred 62 km south-east of Guiuan, in the country's Eastern Samar province, the national weather service said.

Rescue services have reportedly lost contact with Guiuan, a town of 47,000.

Schools and offices have been closed in the region and thousands of people were evacuated amid fears of serious damage.

The storm is not expected to directly hit the capital Manila, further north.

Jeff Masters, a former hurricane meteorologist who is meteorology director at the private firm Weather Underground, told the Associated Press news agency there would be "catastrophic damage".

"The wind damage should be the most extreme in Philippines history,'' he added.

Another meteorologist, Eric Holthaus, said in a tweet that it could prove the "strongest landfall in history"...

A train carrying crude oil derailed overnight in the heart of Lac-Mégantic in Quebec's Eastern Townships, sparking a major fire that has brought firefighters from the town and neighbouring municipalities to the area, and led to the evacuation of 1,000 people from their homes.

'It's terrible. We've never seen anything like it.'—Claude Bedard, Lac-Megantic resident

Witnesses reported having heard several explosions in the town of about 6,000 located 250 kilometres east of Montreal. The derailment happened around 1 a.m. ET.

It is not yet known if there are any casualties.

A spokesperson for Ontario's Environment Ministery says 73 rail cars filled with crhde oil were involved.

The fire, which can be seen for several kilometres, has spread to a number of homes, although it is not clear how many people have been forced to leave.

<img src="http://cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/topstories/2013/07/06/hi-megantic-852-4col.jpg" alt="Over 1,000 people have been evacuated from their homes after a train derailement led to several explosions and a major fire in downtown Lac-Mégantic.
"It's dreadful," said Lac-Mégantic resident Claude Bedard. "It's terrible. We've never seen anything like it. The Metro store, Dollarama, everything that was there is gone."

A large, but as yet undetermined amount of fuel, is also reported to have spilled into the Chaudiere River.

The derailed train belongs to Montreal Maine & Atlantic, which owns more than 800 kilometres of track serving Maine, Vermont, Quebec and New Brunswick, according to the company's website.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

(CNN) -- Dan Sligh could see it coming. An 18-wheeler carrying an oversize load had just struck part of the Interstate 5 bridge over Washington's frigid Skagit River. And the pavement was giving way.

He slammed on the brakes, but the momentum of his truck and trailer carried Sligh and his wife off the bridge and into the water dozens of feet below, he told CNN affiliate KOMO Thursday, hours after the incident some 60 miles north of Seattle.

"You hold on as tight as you can," Sligh said. Then, a "white flash and cold water."

The impact dislocated his shoulder, but the Navy veteran just popped it back in and dragged his unresponsive wife to safety.

Another driver also fell from the bridge, according to state officials. Amazingly, no one died.

Witness: The bridge was just gone

"Rough day," Sligh told KOMO. "Glad to be here breathing."

The collapse was the result of a collision between the tractor-trailer and the overhead structure of the bridge, Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste told reporters.

"The size of the load that he was carrying appeared to create a problem, causing him to strike the bridge," he said.

It had been rated "functionally deficient," according to a federal database, but it was not clear Friday if the bridge's condition played any role in the collapse.

The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team to investigate the collapse. State police and the state highway department are also investigating.

The collapse happened around 7 p.m. Thursday.

Sligh told KOMO he was traveling south on the interstate behind the tractor trailer when he realized the load appeared to be about four feet too wide to fit through the bridge's superstructure.

"Anytime he wants to go over to the left would be OK," Sligh said he told his wife.

But another tractor-trailer appeared to hem the truck in to the right lane.

"There was a big puff of dust, and I hit the brakes."

Dale Ogden told CNN affiliate KING that he was driving near the tractor-trailer's pilot car when he saw a device on that car designed to indicate whether a truck can clear an obstacle hit the top of the bridge.

He then watched in his rear-view mirror as the truck struck the bridge, he told KING.

"It almost tipped the truck over but it came back down. It tipped it up to about a 30 degree angle to the left and it came back down on its wheels, and almost instantaneously behind that I saw girders falling in my rear-view mirror," he said.

The tractor-trailer did not go into the water. The driver was questioned but not detained, state police said.

The bridge carries about 77,000 cars a day, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

It was built 1955, according to KOMO, and was listed by the Federal Highway Administration as "structurally deficient."

That designation means parts of a bridge require monitoring or repair, but does not indicate the bridge is unsafe or likely to collapse, according to the agency. Most deficient bridges remain open to traffic, the agency says.

The number of bridges the state's transportation department considers structurally deficient has grown nearly 50% in the past six years, according to a 2012 government report.

Gov. Jay Inslee said the accident starkly demonstrates the need for additional funding for roads and bridges.

"We have some work to do on our bridges whether or not this accident happened, and we have some discussions in Olympia" -- the state capital -- "about making sure that we make investments in bridges to prevent this kind of thing from happening," he told reporters.

In March, President Barack Obama called on Congress to provide $21 billion for infrastructure construction, including improvements to existing roadways.

But for those in the farming, horticultural and food industries, the misery of what has been dubbed the "springter" is set to continue for weeks. Rural bankruptcy, soaring food prices and lack of consumer confidence are warning signs that the economy could tip into triple-dip recession later this month.

With soil temperatures still at winter levels, garden centres and nurseries are reporting their worst Easter for years, as green-fingered consumers failed to spend money on plants they cannot get into the ground. As many crops need to be sown by the middle of April before the optimal sowing period ends, this has led to fears that unless the weather improves significantly in the next 10 days, farming in the UK will be in crisis.

Farmers have suffered catastrophic losses of livestock due to freezing temperatures and drifting snow, with the national body responsible for collecting carcasses revealing a 16 per cent rise in dead sheep and nearly 6 per cent in dead cattle, compared with this time last year....

Heavy storms battered many parts of China over the last two days, killing 12 people and affecting more than 3 million others, officials have said.

The storms swept across 15 counties and cities, causing floods and landslides.

In eastern province of Shandong, four people have died, and more than 100,000 forced to evacuate from low lying areas, Xinhua reported. More than 3 million people have been affected in the province.

Floods have inundated crops, damaged houses and killed livestock. The disaster has caused an economic loss of more than 1.5 billion yuan (around USD 240 million).

Eight people were killed on Friday after rainstorms triggered landslides in the city of Liupanshui in southwest China's Guizhou Province, the city government said.

July 4 fireworks are such a tradition that I can’t imagine the holiday without it. In fact, I honestly can’t remember a summer when I didn’t hear the thunderous booms and see the colorful displays of fireworks exploding all around my suburban home. However, as temperatures skyrocket and drought conditions worsen, many towns, cities, and communities are canceling their Fourth of July celebrations for fear that one burning ember could spark a raging inferno.

In addition to canceling annual fireworks displays, state and city officials from Utah to Indiana to Kentucky have asked that people not use roman candles, sparklers, or firecrackers in their backyards, especially in areas that have been heavily affected by the lack of rain and sweltering heat. This year, they say, is particularly dangerous for such shenanigans.

The concern also applies to the West Coast, as well. Authorities are still attempting to get a handle on the Colorado wildfires that have damaged countless homes and scorched approximately 1.8 million acres thus far. Adding fireworks displays into the mix could potentially lead to more disasters, prompting officials to cancel scheduled celebrations.

For those who make their living from the sale of fireworks, the bans have been particularly devastating. A number of businesses have seen their profits plummet thanks to area-wide cancellations. For example, Paul Forman, who owns Fireworks and Forman Blasters Pyrotechnics in Peru, Indiana, stated that his business has taken a tremendous hit from the numerous bans and cancellations. The same can be said for a number of individuals who look for summer fireworks sales to carry them through the rest of the year.

However, because safety always comes first, it makes sense that such displays are being cancelled in the wake of the extreme heat and lack of adequate rainfall. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks accounted for nearly 15,500 blazes and $36 million in property damage in 2010 alone. Given this year’s conditions, experts believe that number could increase substantially if actions are not taken.

Regardless of these bans, people are still going to rush out to the local grocery store and pick up something to ignite on the fourth. I don’t care how many bans are in place

The hail downpour was part of a powerful storm system that rolled through parts of Colorado and Wyoming on Thursday, packing heavy rains, high winds and hail.

The storms followed a round of nasty late spring weather that pummeled the region.

Preliminary reports show Colorado was hit by 10 tornadoes during the past two days.

The storms came at the peak time for such severe weather in the state. Severe thunderstorms normally become less common later in the month and in early July until summer monsoons start developing.

Forecaster Jerry Claycomb, from the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, said the same factors created the storms in both states.

A low-pressure system stalled over northern Colorado and against the Laramie Range mountains southeast of Casper. That pulled up low-level moisture from the Gulf of Mexico from the southeast.

Sakurajima, Japan (CBS) -- Sakurajima continued its second day of violent eruptions on Tuesday, spewing hot rocks and ash, but there was no major damage in the vicinity, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.

The agency said Monday's powerful eruption was the most forceful since 2009.

The volcano is located in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima.

The Meteorological Agency added that the volcano has been erupting steadily for the last two years, but the eruption on Monday turned violent, throwing 50-centimetre (1 foot 6 inches) rocks nearly 1.2 miles away, the furthest since 2009.

In response, the Meteorological agency extended the eruption warning to residents living further away from the mouth of the volcano.

The volcano has already had over 300 eruptions this year.

Sakurajima volcano, one of Japan's more active volcanoes, resumed activity in 1955 and has been active ever since.

Sakurajima volcano in Japan's southern Kagoshima prefecture erupts violently in what officials say is the most powerful since 2009, though there has been no damage so far.

A factory has collapsed in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore killing at least 10 women and three children, officials say.

The blast at the three-storey building is believed to have been caused by a gas leak.

Rescuers fear many more are trapped in the rubble of the factory, which was illegally making veterinary medicines.

Local trade union leader Farooq Tariq told the BBC that many of the workers were children.

Authorities rescued at least 13 people, while others trapped managed to escape from the rubble.

"The death toll has risen to 13 and we have pulled out 13 people alive from under the rubble," an emergency services official told AFP news agency.

"We hope to find more alive people overnight."

Rescue teams brought in floodlights to carry on the operation as night fell.

Officials said the 25-year-old factory, in a residential area of the city, had not been properly registered so was operating illegally.

Residents say children below the legal working age of 16 were employed there to pack medicines.

"I was inside the building when the blast happened," said Asad, an eight-year-old labourer.

"Two other boys were with me and they started running. I don't know where they went and if they are alive."

Child workers

A total of 60 people, including women and under-aged children who worked in the factory, were inside when it collapsed, Rizwan Naseer, head of the state-run rescue service in Punjab province said, the Associated Press reported.

However, the blast happened shortly after opening hours and correspondents say people may have still been arriving.

The building caved in after several gas cylinders inside exploded, the city's deputy commissioner, Ahad Cheema said.

Reuters news agency said authorities were having problems transporting heavy machinery to the area to clear the debris because of narrow streets in the residential area where the factory was located.

Rescue workers shifting rubble by hand said they were looking for voids where people may have been able to survive.

"It's a big disaster. It is too early to say when we'll finish. We want to recover alive as many people as possible," rescuer Ahmed Raza said.
