Pre-Announcement Media Coverage

We are seeing so many remarkable pre-announcement pieces showing up, this is a place to post and discuss them. This one for example, is making discoveries sound 'ho hum' which a few months/years ago were heralded as amazing breakthroughs. Today for example:

"Nearly Every Star Hosts at Least One Alien Planet"

http://news.yahoo.com/nearly-every-star-hosts-least-one-alien-planet-120845221.html

When a month or so ago they were making a BIG deal about finding one planet in the sweet zone which could possibly support life, son they they say 25% of them could support life! Including mention of red dwarfs, etc. The Zeta predicted evidence continues to build up!

Here is another blog that relates, describing a wobble:

Presidential Proclamation -- National Preparedness Month, 2014

    NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH, 2014

    - - - - - - -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

    A PROCLAMATION

In times of emergency, our Nation pulls together --neighbors support each other, communities react with compassion, and afterward, our country emerges stronger and more resilient. But before emergencies occur, we must make sure we are ready to respond, and it is every American's responsibility to be prepared. There are simple but important steps we can all take to ensure we know what to do and have what we need in the event of a crisis. National Preparedness Month is an opportunity to talk with our families, friends, and colleagues about the risks in our communities and to practice our responses in all the places we regularly visit.

Emergencies -- from hurricanes and wildfires to cyber and terrorist attacks -- can strike anywhere at any time. Americans should be familiar with local threats and hazards and take steps to reduce their devastating impacts. Families should assemble a disaster supplies kit well in advance and have a plan to reconnect after a tragedy. To make sure you are ready in the event of a crisis and to learn more about the types of disasters common in your area, visit www.Ready.gov or www.Listo.gov.

In regions affected by disaster, my Administration invested billions of dollars during the immediate aftermath to support a rapid response. We bolstered coordination with our local, State, tribal, and territorial partners to cut through red tape and kept our commitment to rebuild stronger and fully recover together. We are harnessing our Nation's innovative spirit to develop new tools and technologies that will empower survivors and better inform Americans before, during, and after an emergency. My Administration also launched America's PrepareAthon! to assist with increasing local readiness. Through this initiative, communities across our country will participate in the second national day of action on September 30, providing Americans of all ages with resources and opportunities to increase their preparedness.

Our Nation also faces longer wildfire seasons, more severe droughts, heavier rainfall, and more frequent flooding in a changing climate. That is why, as part of my Climate Action Plan, we are committed to building smarter, more resilient infrastructure that can withstand more frequent and more devastating natural disasters and to supporting our communities as they prepare for these impacts.

When and where emergencies occur are beyond our control -- but how we prepare and how we respond are up to us. This month, we honor the heroes who put the needs and lives of others before their own and rush to help in times of tragedy: our emergency responders and other extraordinary Americans who are prepared to act in critical moments. Let us resolve to be ready for any crisis and work to inspire a new generation of Americans, vested with the knowledge and experience to protect themselves, their families, and their communities in the face of any challenge.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 2014 as National Preparedness Month. I encourage all Americans to recognize the importance of preparedness and work together to enhance our national security, resilience, and readiness.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-ninth.

    BARACK OBAMA

Are two suns better than one? 50% of planets may be like Tatooine as number of worlds orbiting binary stars revealed to be more common than first thought

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2743375/Are-two-suns...

    • Astronomers led by Southern Connecticut State University say that half of all planets in the universe may have two suns
    • The finding was made by observing stars already found to host planets
    • The team found that 50 per cent of such stars were in binary systems
    • This means more planets than thought are orbiting multiple stars
    • Some of the planets may never-ending day time, while others would just have an unusually bright second star among others in their night sky

Imagine a world where it’s never night time; when one sun moves below the horizon another takes its place, providing endless light.

This might sound like a sci-fi scenario, but research now suggests that this could be far more common than thought.

In fact, up to 50 per cent of stars hosting planets may actually be in binary systems, providing their worlds with odd characteristics not seen in our solar system.

While some planets may resemble Tatooine from Star Wars, with two bright suns in the sky, other circumbinary planets in wide orbits around their stars may simply have one unusually bright star among others in their sky in addition to their sun.

Spain prepares for an autumn of discontent by buying €1bn of riot gear

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/08/spain-one-bn-on-riot-g...

The Spanish government is readying itself for an autumn of discontent, spending nearly €1bn on riot gear for police units as disparate protestgroups prepare a string of demonstrations.

Since June, the interior ministry has tendered four contracts to purchase riot equipment ranging from shields to stab vests. The ministry also finalised its purchase of a new truck-mounted water cannon, an anti-riot measure used during Spain's dictatorship and the transition to democracy but little seen in recent years. Despite attempts by opposition Socialist politician Antonio Trevín to paint the purchase as "a return to times that we would rather forget", the ministry said in its tender that the water cannon was necessary, "given the current social dynamic".

So I came accross this article on CBC today and I thought that it would 'fit' in this blog. It has to do with the fact that science has PROVEN that ORAL HISTORY passed down by a certain group (Inuit) for hundreds of years has been correct. One of the lost Franklin expedition ships has been found, and lo and behold...it was exactly in the same area the natives had told scientists since they started looking!

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/franklin-find-proves-inuit-oral...

"For us Inuit it means that oral history is very strong in knowledge, not only for searching for Franklin's ships but also for environment and other issues," Kamookak said.

This is evidence in support of the fact that science needs to take the history of ancient cultures seriously (whether written or oral) and apply it. As the elder Kamookak said "Environmental issues etc..." need to be looked at more carefully with an open mind!

Just think of the inundation of oral and written history proving Planet X exists (and the subsequent prior shifts) when the announcement happens.

Expect the Unexpected: More 9.0 Megaquakes Are Coming, Study Says

Interesting that more and more now, the media is hinting at things to come without much explanation other than their own theories based on past quakes- in this case the message is "expect the unexpected"  big quakes are coming inevitably and likely sooner and more frequent than we thought.

Vidale said the bottom line from the latest research is that "we know less than we claim about how big different earthquakes can be in different parts of the world."

That means the traditional way of designing structures to be earthquake-proof may have to change. In the wake of 2011's Japan earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear disaster, experts and regulators are already coming around to the concept of "expecting the unexpected."

CONTINUING THE MILITARIZATION OF PUBLIC BODIES IN THE US - NOW SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE BEING GIVEN MILITARY SUPPLIES

    http://www.autoblog.com/2014/09/16/san-diego-school-district-acquir...

San Diego Unified School District aquires a a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, more commonly known as an MRAP, or the US military's answer to the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) so favored by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Now, you might be asking, are the officers of the San Diego Unified School District Police (sidebar: is it normal nowadays for school districts to have police departments?) regularly subject to ambushes and/or IEDs? It seems unlikely.

Instead, the district says the vehicle will be used for search and rescue, according to KPBS, the local public broadcaster.

"Our idea is: How can we get in and pull out a classroom at a time of kids if the...? If there's a fire [or] if there's an earthquake, can we rip down a wall? Stuff like that," Captain Joe Florentino told KBPS

"It's not police militarizing schools," he told KBPS. "There will be medical supplies in the vehicle. There will be teddy bears in the vehicle. There will be trauma kits in the vehicle in the event any student is injured, and our officers are trained to give first aid and CPR."

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the schools around the country with military supplies

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/17/school-military-supplies_n...

Pinellas County School District in Pinellas County, Florida, is one of over 20 districts around the country with a police force or public safety department in possession of former military supplies, thanks to the Department of Defense's Excess Property Program, or 1033 program. Since 1997, the initiative has provided excess military equipment to state agencies like local and public university police forces, but it has come under renewed scrutiny in the weeks following the Ferguson demonstrations.

The 1033 program provides supplies ranging from extreme weapons, like grenade launchers, to everyday materials, like laptops. State agencies must apply in order to receive extra materials from the military, and all the equipment is on indefinite loan. In Pinellas County School District, the district's police department received almost two dozen M16 rifles.

"Our hope is that our officers never have a need to use this equipment," Melanie Marquez Parra, the district's public information officer, told The Huffington Post. "These are items we acquired so they could have equipment for worst-case scenario situations."

The program provides things like office equipment, tents, generators, pick-up trucks and ATVs,  But law enforcement agencies can also use it to obtain military aircraft, weapons (including grenade launchers), and heavily armored tactical vehicles.

However, Rep Alan Grayson had introduced an amendment in June to prevent local police forces from getting free military equipment, through this weapons program.

The house voted it down 355 to 62.

The program was meant for the DOD to transfer excess or used equipment to local police forces. However, the american civil liberties union says in 36 % of the cases, the equipment is new.

Governor Sam Brownback declares October “Zombie preparedness month” as he unveils plans to protect the city from the living dead

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11121755...

Sam Brownback, the state’s Republican governor, has decided that October is to be “zombie preparedness month”.

He will sign a formal declaration on Friday to encourage Kansans to prepare for all disasters including an invasion of the undead.

Kansans are told to ready themselves for the zombie invasion in much the same way as typhoons, floods and other natural disasters.

Requirements include three days food and a home emergency kit.

"You want to make sure you have all the food and water you need," Devan Tucking, the state's Deputy Emergency Operations manager told the Telegraph.

"You need to work on your zombie alerts. Of course if you look like a zombie you may be able to escape from them.

"Good cardio fitness is useful if you want to run away and have good running shows. Ladies should get rid of their high heels.

"If you hear a strange sound, don't go their on your own, use a buddie system. If you do run away, don't look back and get some good maps and make sure you know your area.

"You may want to avoid cemeteries.

“If you are prepared for a zombie apocalypse, you are prepared for anything.”

Preparing for a zombie invasion appears to be one of the few things uniting Democrats and Republicans with President Barack Obama’s administration drawing up its own strategy in a 31-page document to deal with the threat.

“It is our way of telling people that even if the severe weather season is over, the winter is coming up,” a spokesman for Governor Brownback said.

To drum up interest in the zombie threat, the state is even holding a “fun lurch” over the weekend with a “disaster on the go” pack being handed out to the first 300 people – alive or undead – who show up.

CITING TERRORISM AS A REASON, CHINA ARMS ITS POLICE FORCE WITH LITTLE OR NO TRAINING

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/after-china-gives-...

LUOKAN VILLAGE, China — Invoking the threat of terrorism, Chinese police for the first time in years have started carrying guns and, with little training, using them.

The fatal effects have rippled across the country, reaching even this tiny mountain village.

China’s removal of a ban on police guns came in response to a gruesome attack on a train station several hundred miles from here, but it has given the police almost blanket authority to shoot whenever they see fit.

More than a decade into America’s war on terror, China is launching its own. And experts worry that the flood of newly armed police — combined with poor training and the government’s take-no-prisoners attitude — could become as fearful a problem as the terrorism it is intended to combat.

In the latest police-related violence, at least 40 people died Sunday in China’s restive Xinjiang region, according to state-run news media, which attributed the incident to terrorists and identified the deceased as “rioters” shot by police or killed in explosions.

By contrast, the sleepy village of Luokan is about as remote and unlikely a place for terrorism as can be found. Yet when police fatally shot a man recently in the middle of a busy market here, they declared him a terrorist as well and abruptly closed the case.

“But everyone knows this is a lie,” said one villager in a hushed midnight interview inside his home.

“There are no terrorists here,” said another beside him. “The only ones we’re afraid of are the police.”

While police shootings are often viewed with suspicion worldwide — most notably in the death last month of an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Mo. — there are few countries where local authorities have as much power as they do in China to suppress all evidence afterward.

No one knows how many people die here from gun violence each year, much less from police shootings, because of government secrecy.

Among the killings publicly reported in the past five months, since the policy change: A man with a history of mental illness shot by police in Sichuan province. An allegedly drunk officer in Luoping county who quarreled with one man and then killed another who was trying to intervene, according to reports quickly taken down by censors.

And at a gun-safety demonstration in front of kindergartners in Henan province, an officer fired a loaded gun, thinking it was empty, and sent a child and several parents to the hospital.

At a recent training session in Shandong province, one detective said, several officers — not aware of the recoil force that comes with shooting — gripped their guns improperly and broke their thumbs.

Some police officers have been issued licenses without visiting the firing range, because their departments are fudging paperwork, according to officers who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“Most of us haven’t shot a gun in years,” said the detective. “A lot of cops are afraid to even hold one.”

Pentagon: climate crisis an immediate security threat

For all of the many scary aspects of the climate crisis, it’s important not to forget the national security implications.
The Pentagon on Monday released a report asserting decisively that climate change poses an immediate threat to national security, with increased risks from terrorism, infectious disease, global poverty and food shortages. It also predicted rising demand for military disaster responses as extreme weather creates more global humanitarian crises.

The report lays out a road map to show how the military will adapt to rising sea levels, more violent storms and widespread droughts. The Defense Department will begin by integrating plans for climate change risks across all of its operations, from war games and strategic military planning situations to a rethinking of the movement of supplies.
“The loss of glaciers will strain water supplies in several areas of our hemisphere,” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told a group of contemporaries in Peru yesterday. “Destruction and devastation from hurricanes can sow the seeds for instability. Droughts and crop failures can leave millions of people without any lifeline, and trigger waves of mass migration.”

The Pentagon’s findings come on the heels of a related report from a leading government-funded military research organization, which found the “accelerating rate of climate change poses a severe risk to national security and acts as a catalyst for global political conflict.”

Among the areas of concern are conflicts over natural resources, food scarcity, the effects of rising sea levels, and the potential for refugee crises.

Yesterday’s report was, however, a little different. As the New York Times’ report noted, “Before, the Pentagon’s response to climate change focused chiefly on preparing military installations to adapt to its effects, like protecting coastal naval bases from rising sea levels. The new report, however, calls on the military to incorporate climate change into broader strategic thinking about high-risk regions – for example, the ways in which drought and food shortages might set off political unrest in the Middle East and Africa.”

In a political context, it’s worth acknowledging that congressional Republicans not only oppose such “broader strategic thinking,” they’ve also taken deliberate steps to prevent the Pentagon from even considering such concerns.

Kate Sheppard reported in May that House Republicans “passed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization bill … that would bar the Department of Defense from using funds to assess climate change and its implications for national security.”

Rep. David McKinley (R-W.Va.), the sponsor of the measure, argued at the time, “The climate is obviously changing; it has always been changing. With all the unrest around the [world], why should Congress divert funds from the mission of our military and national security to support a political ideology?”

The answer, as we discussed at the time, is that climate change and national security, whether the right chooses to acknowledge this or not, are inextricably linked. Telling U.S. military leaders they must bury their heads in the sand because congressional Republicans say so won’t help.

Among those voting for the measure: Reps. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.)*. All five of these far-right representatives voted to prevent the Pentagon from considering the national security implications of global warming, and all five are poised for promotions to the U.S. Senate.

    * Correction/Update: It looks like I missed one. As Eric Edlund reminds me, Rep. Steve Daines (R) of Montana also voted to block the Defense Department on this, and he’s also poised to get a promotion to the Senate.

US, European and Asian markets see a huge sell off in shares:

    -------------------------------

Steep Sell-Off Spreads Fear to Wall Street

    http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/10/15/stocks-tumble-on-global-grow...

Waves of nervous selling buffeted the stock market in the United States on Wednesday, after a steep sell-off in Europe. At one point, the Dow Jones industrial average had plunged 460 points, or 2.8 percent, though it later swung higher to close down 1.1 percent, or 173.45 points. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index fell 0.8 percent, or 15.21 points. Since their peak a month ago, American stocks have lost over $2 trillion in value, losses that may ripple through the wider economy.

    ----------------------------------

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/10/17/markets-stocks-europe-idUK...

European stocks rose in early trading on Friday, halting the week's sharp drop after Wall Street pared losses as macro data soothed fears about the U.S. economic outlook.

At 0703 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top Europeanshares was up 0.4 percent at 1,250.48 points, after losing 3.7 percent earlier in the week.

But gains looked fragile, and a warning from Rolls-Royce that it would not return to growth next year fuelled worries over corporate profits and sent shares of the Britishengineering group down 7 percent.

The month-long sell-off in European stocks has prompted U.S.-based investors to slash their exposure to Europe, according to data from Thomson Reuters Lipper.

A Lipper poll of 109 U.S.-domiciled funds invested in European stocks, which include exchange-traded funds' (ETFs) holdings, shows net outflows of $1.3 billion in the seven days to Oct 15, the biggest weekly redemptions since Lipper started to monitor the data in 1992.

    -----------------------------------

A recent selloff in Asia due to global volatility was fading Friday with stocks in Australia edging higher, though shares on China’s mainland fell amid slowdown concerns.

The Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, -0.65%  was down 1.3%, ahead of next week’s Fourth Plenum, an annual meeting of China leaders which may offer clues about plans to address a slowing economy.

China also is expected to release third-quarter economic growth figures next Tuesday. Economists expect 7.2% growth from a year earlier, slowing from a 7.5% on year increase in the second quarter.

Earth 'opening up': Seismologists confirm a global surge of great earthquakes from 2004-2014
    http://m.phys.org/news/2014-10-global-surge-great-earthquakes-.html
The last ten years have been a remarkable time for great earthquakes. Since December 2004 there have been no less than 18 quakes of Mw8.0 or greater – a rate of more than twice that seen from 1900 to mid-2004. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost and massive damage has resulted from these great earthquakes. But as devastating as such events can be, these recent great quakes have come with a silver lining: They coincide with unprecedented advances in technological and scientific capacity for learning from them.
"We previously had very limited information about how ruptures grow into great earthquakes and interact with regions around them," said seismologist Thorne Lay of the University of California at Santa Cruz. "So we are using the recorded data for these recent events to guide our understanding of future earthquakes. We've gained a new level of appreciation for how one earthquake can influence events in other zones."
High on the list of areas ripe for a great quake is Cascadia, the Pacific Northwest, where the risk for great quakes had long been under appreciated. Evidence began surfacing about 20 years ago that there had been a great quake in the region in the year 1700. Since then the view of the great quake risk in Cascadia has shifted dramatically.

"We don't know many details about what happened in 1700," said Lay. There were no instruments back then to observe and record it. And so the best way to try and understand the danger and what could happen in Cascadia is to study the recent events elsewhere.

Over the last decade Lay and his colleagues have been able to gather fine details about these giant earthquakes using data from an expanded global networks of seismometers, GPS stations, tsunami gauges, and new satellite imaging capabilities such as GRACE, InSAR, and LandSAT interferometry. Among the broader conclusions they have come to is that great quakes are very complicated and idiosyncratic. Lay will be presenting some of those idiosyncrasies at the meeting of the Geological Society of America in Vancouver on Oct. 21.

"What we've seen is that we can have multiple faults activated," said Lay. "We've seen it off Sumatra and off Japan. Once earthquakes get going they can activate faulting in areas that were thought not physically feasible."

The great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of Dec. 26, 2004, for instance, unzipped a 1,300 kilometer long segment of the subduction zone and unleashed one of history's most destructive, deadly tsunamis. Much of the rupture was along a region with very limited plate convergence. In Japan, the Kuril Islands, and the Solomon Islands, great mega-thrust ruptures have ruptured portions of the subduction zones that were thought too warm or weak to experience earthquakes.

"These earthquakes ruptured right through areas that had been considered to have low risk," said Lay. "We thought that would not happen. But it did, so we have to adjust our understanding."

Perhaps the best recent analogy to Cascadia is off the coast of Iquique, Chile, said Lay. There had been a great quake in 1877, and a conspicuous gap in quakes ever since. Like the 1700 Cascadia earthquake, there is little data for the 1877 event, which killed more than 2,500 people. In both subduction zones, the converging plates are thought to be accumulating strain which could be released in a very large and violent rupture. On April 1 of this year, some of that strain was released offshore of Iquique. There was a Mw8.1 rupture in the northern portion of the seismic gap. But it involved slip over less than 20 percent of the region that seismologists believe to have accumulated strain since 1877.

"We have no idea why only a portion of the 1877 zone ruptured," said Lay. "But clearly, 80 percent of that zone is still unruptured. We don't have a good basis for assessment of how the rest will fail. It's the same for Cascadia. We don't know if it always goes all at once or sometimes in sequences of smaller events, with alternatin

The 12,400-year-old settlement was found in a cave called the Cuncaicha rock shelter, located nearly 4,500 metres above sea level. That makes it the highest ice age human settlement ever found

The site is more than 2,000 metres higher than the famous Inca archeological site Machu Picchu — where travellers already risk becoming ill from altitude sickness — and just 880 metres lower than the Mount Everest base camp in the Himalayas.

    Could a tsunami strike Britain?

Twenty countries around the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, including the UK, are being tested for tsunami readiness. But how likely is it that disaster will strike?

In general, when we think of the devastation wreaked by tsunamis, we think of it being a long way away. Around the Indian Ocean, or the Pacific, where there are huge geological faults and therefore frequent earthquakes, the most common cause of tsunamis.

Anyone who has visited countries around the coasts of those oceans will have seen the warning systems and safety drills in place, ordering people to get to high ground if a tsunami warning is declared.

But there are few such systems in place in Europe, so Unesco (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Org...to determine how ready for a similar threat people are on countries around the Atlantic, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.

Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Monaco, Morocco, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom are involved in the test over the next three days, and another 19 countries will be examined in the future.

How likely is it that Britain will be hit by a tsunami?

The short answer is "not very". Most tsunamis are caused either by earthquakes in the ocean, or by huge undersea landslides, which themselves are usually caused by earthquake activity. (They can also be caused by meteor impacts - the Chicxulub impact that killed the dinosaurs is believed to have .... But if we are hit by a 10-mile-wide meteor again, we will probably have bigger problems.) We are lucky enough to live in a very seismically stable part of the world, and while tsunamis can travel long distances through seawater, most of our coastline is protected - either by the European continent, or Ireland.

While to Britain's north there is the seismically active region around Iceland, it is unlikely that there will be a truly major earthquake there, because it is not a "subduction zone", a place where two tectonic plates meet and one is driven underneath the other into the Earth's mantle.

Most major earthquakes, including the ones that caused the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, the one that devastated Japan in 2011, and the Chilean earthquake of 2010, happen on subduction zones.

There is a possibility that a subduction zone is developing off the..., spreading there from the Mediterranean. However, since geological processes are usually measured in tens or hundreds of thousands of years, that is unlikely to be an urgent problem - and even when it happens, Britain will still be protected by the Iberian pensinsula.

(UPDATE: having said that, someone called @mushymelbowhead on Twitter has pointed me to this article which suggests that a tsunami may have killed 2,000 pe....)

How likely is it that other European countries will be hit by a tsunami?

Rather more likely. Portugal has already been hit by two very major earthquakes in (relatively) recent history, despite not lying on a subduction fault - it was these anomalous quakes in 1755 and 1969 that led researchers to consider the "developing subduction zone" hypothesis mentioned above. (The 1755 earthquake triggered a huge tsunami; it is estimated that 100,000 people died in Lisbon.) But the Mediterranean in general is steadily shrinking, as the African tectonic plate is subucted beneath the Eurasian plate; this is, of course, a subduction zone, and seismically active. In 1908, somewhere between 60,000 and 120,000 people died in Messina and Reggio, southern Italy, after a major (magnitude 7.1) earthquake shook the seabed on the narrow strait between the mainland and Sicily; thousands of the deaths were caused by 36-foot waves crashing into the coast around the epicentre. It is possible that the tsunami was caused by an undersea landslide triggered by the quake.

Other countries around the Mediterranean, including Turkey, have suffered devastating earthquakes. And in the Black Sea, in 1901, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake caused 15.... Major earthquakes are rare everywhere, but there are enough seismically active zones in Europe to make a tsunami early-warning system worthwhile.

What about "megatsunamis" caused by landslides?

We've really only talked about earthquake tsunamis so far, with the (possible) exception of the Messina-Reggio quake of 1908. But there has been a great deal of talk about the possibility of a megatsunami - one hundreds or thousands of feet tall - caused by a huge landslide; specifically, a landslide on the island of La Palma in the Canaries.

The hypothesis is that a huge shelf of rock, nearly the size of the Isle of Wight, could c..., perhaps triggered by an earthquake or volcano. The rock would hit the water faster than the water could get out of the way, goes the story, and would cause a wave 3,000 feet tall which would still be 150 feet tall by the time it hit the US Atlantic coast; the death toll would be enormous, perhaps millions.

It is dramatic and frightening, but almost certainly false; seismologists and geologists are near-universally agreed that it couldn't happen. The risk of landslide-triggered tsunamis is real in small bodies of water - in 1963, one major landslide fell into a lake behind a dam in Italy, causing a huge wave that overtopped the dam and roared down the val....

But there are no recorded episodes of this happening on an oceanic scale. And the La Palma rock is unlikely to collapse in one vast lump - research published in the journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems found that previous Canary Island landslides have happened in stages, not all at once. As this blog on the American Geophysical Union puts it, "this scare should be consigned to the garbage can once and for all".

This looks like the establishment is trying to gauge what the public reaction/disbelief will be during the 6 days of darkness during stopped rotation for the side of Earth facing away from the Sun.

A satirical news outlet (like the Onion) reported "NASA Confirms Earth Will Experience 6 Days of Total Darkness".

However, the hoax story even drafts in some credible-sounding sources including Nasa chief Charles Bolden, who reportedly warned the public to stay calm. Some users even linked to a (real) video of Bolden talking about “emergency preparedness” – an official-sounding phrase that apparently bypasses common sense to hit the big button marked ‘PANIC’ in the brain.

Lockheed Martin scientist on deathbed says aliens are real (VIDEO

    http://rt.com/news/200903-aliens-lockheed-martin-pictures/

Aliens, some as old as 200 years, are real and have visited Earth, a former Lockheed Martin senior scientist has claimed. In his final moments, he provided “photo evidence” while sharing his personal experiences of UFOs and extraterrestrials.

The controversial 33-minute video was made shortly before Boyd Bushman died on August 7, 2014. However, the footage has only recently emerged and is starting to garner widespread attention.

“I do have a top secret clearance,” he affirms at the beginning of the video. He goes on to state that incidents such as Roswell in 1947 – when a military Air Force surveillance balloon crashed – happened at the hands of aliens.

Bushman shared details about aliens, UFOs, and anti-gravity technology – which he says is being developed by US, Russian, and Chinese scientists at Area 51 (the US military facility).

In the video, Bushman is seen holding up second-hand “photo evidence” of aliens while describing them to viewers.

“They were approximately four and a half to five feet tall,” the former top aerospace scientist said. “They have three back bones. They’re actually cartilage,” he added, stating that they had fewer ribs than human beings. These aliens have fingers and toes like human beings.

He went on to state that their eyes and noses are different from humans, and that they are telepathic mind readers.

"They're able to use their own voice by telepathy to talk to you," he said. “You walk in the room with one of them, and all of a sudden you find yourself giving the answer to your question in your own voice.”

According to Bushman, there are two different groups of aliens.

“It’s like a cattle ranch,” he stated, adding that some can be up to 230 years old.“One group is wranglers, and the others are rustlers - the stealers of cattle.”

“Wranglers” are “much more friendly and have a better relationship with us.”

Bushman seemed to have known the details of where and how those aliens live.

He claimed the creatures are inhabitants of a planet called Quintumnia. It is located 68 light-years away from Earth, yet it takes them only 45 minutes to travel to our planet. At home, they commute through telepathy, Bushman insisted.

The deceased scientist went on to say that he actually saw their homes because he gave the aliens a camera to take pictures with. It is, however, hard to say what those pictures contain because the images turned out blurry.

In another revelation, Bushman said there is a special flight path from space to Area 51, a mysterious base in central Nevada where it is believed that aliens and their spacecrafts were stored.

He added that there are Americans working on UFOs from outer space 24 hours a day, reported the Metro.

“With respect to the alien craft, we have American citizens who are working on UFOs 24 hours a day,” he stated.

However, the alien seen in Bushman's photographs is actually available to buy at Walmart, according to an investigation by Quebec station TVQC.

Aliens are 'divided into two groups' on earth, says Boyd Bushman

is sincere and telling the truth as he knows it. However, his contacts with aliens and their technology was limited to a single race, which was Service-to-Self. His description of the aliens being divided into two camps – the wranglers and the wrestlers – seems to be a division into Service-to-Other and Service-to-Self, as he describes the wranglers as more friendly, but as is known among humans who are highly Service-to-Self, the ability to posture and act kind and caring can disguise the true nature of the orientation. Thus, much of what Boyd was told was a lie.

Their mode of interstellar travel, the length of time it took to travel, the supposed photos they took of their home planets, and how their anti-gravity
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSSUzC9xl6s
and energy producing technology worked were all fraudulently convened to Boyd. As is known, the Service-to-Self lie freely. The Council of Worlds allowed these Service-to-Self aliens to provide technology to man, but not the secrets of how it worked nor the ability to operate this technology. But the photos provided to Boyd of alien bodies are genuine, and were provided with the plan that he would have a role during disclosure, the deathbed revelation that has occurred.

Boyd also bought into the lies that his employers provided. Mankind was not able to reverse engineer alien technology. This lie has been promulgated in order to make man appear powerful in comparison to aliens. Arrogant members of MJ12 have, in the past, spread the rumor that they have alien technology,
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNPBYtJyfZo
yet no proof of this has ever emerged. Space ships given to MJ12 by Service-to-Self aliens were stored at Area 51, with attempts by humans to fly them resulting only in wobbling about or crashed ships.
    http://www.zetatalk.com/govmt/g33.htm
Nor did these dead alien bodies arrive because a human in an airplane was allowed by the aliens to shoot down one of their ships! How absurd is this story?

In that Boyd so willingly repeated the false stories that his MJ12 employers wanted the public to believe, he was considered an ideal vehicle for these false stories. His credentials check out. He holds patents and has worked for the Military Industrial Complex. Even aged and at death’s door, he is obviously not senile. His story has the ring of truth. As told by Boyd, it is the truth as he knows it. This last video is an attempt to counter the release of the Skinny Bob video,
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx3ond0SzPQ
a video of another MJ12 guest who was of the Service-to-Other orientation and alive when filmed. What should the public believe? Stories told by Boyd Bushman, or their own eyes?

Space agency attempted to steal evidence of extraterrestrial life, claims Sri Lankan politician (Oct. 29)

    =====================================

The Journal of Cosmology had previously also published a paper by Richard Hoover (a retired NASA scientist) Re: proof of life found in meteors. Nasa, however formally distanced themselves from him & his paper (Huffpo Link & archive)

Here is a quote from the criticisms against Hoover

"Anyone can call himself (referring to Hoover) an astrobiologist. That doesn't make it so," said Pilcher, the Astrobiology institute director.

However, here is the kicker. NASA's own website details Hoover's extensive accomplishments in astrobiology. (NASA Link & archive).

The NASA news release was published in 2009, only 2 years before NASA decides to distance themselves from Hoover's allegations that life has been found on meteorites. How does NASA's Astrobiology Institue director not know of a well-accomplished fellow scientist's accolades?

So where does this take us?

Two days ago a research team in partnership with the european space agency has revealed that DNA can survive a flight through space and re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. So, after going through the scorching heat that a meteor could go through, as well as traveling in space, the DNA samples placed on the outside of the rocket was still viable!!

Just to add on to the recent methane (which is usually produced by life) findings on Mars, this isn't exactly new & perhaps goes all the way back to the Viking landers from the 1970's. http://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/2pk9yy/just_a_reminder_that_... .

Basically, martian soil was soaked with nutrients. And then they observed an increase in carbon dioxide, as possible evidence of metabolism from life.

This finding was however, dismissed because #1) although organic compounds (not necessarily life) was common in comets and such, none was found in Mars back then (coverup?). And #2) there was no water on Mars, which we now have known for a while is untrue. And even just recently NASA talked about an ancient lake, as well as finding water along with ancient organic compounds.

On top of this Miller (the scientist) found the gas emanations to follow a daily rhythm. So for instance, all living matter follow  a daily cycle. We wake up, sleep following the pattern of the sun. Plants release & take in gases according to the sun's daily pattern. Just like that, Miller found gas emanations to follow a pattern that repeated every martian day. These were explained away as chemical reactions taking place. So they tried comparing it with organic & lifeless, chemical reactions that take place on earth, & the patterns followed that of living matter.

    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/04/120413-nasa-viking-...

Now NASA has to do an about turn, which isn't exactly an easy thing to do.

Curiosity has discovered organic matter on Mars

    http://www.cnet.com/news/curiosity-has-discovered-organic-matter-on...

Molecules found by Curiosity on Mars have been confirmed as organic matter -- the building blocks of all known forms of terrestrial life.

    NASA

The Curiosity rover has found and analysed the first definitively identified piece of organic matter on the surface of Mars.

These organic molecules, consisting primarily of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms, are the building blocks of all life on Earth. However, it is important to note that these molecules may not have come from life forms on Mars -- organic molecules can be created from chemical processes that do not involve life, NASA said. At this stage, there is not enough evidence to determine the provenance of the molecules -- but either way, their presence has meaning.

The team responsible for Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite have several hypotheses. The first is, of course, a biological process. Others include chemical reactions in water at ancient hot springs on the Red Planet, or arrival from off-planet via dust, meteorites, asteroids or comets.

Recently, Curiosity found evidence of dry river and lake beds on Mars -- of surface water on the planet -- such as minerals that can only form in the presence of liquid water, and erosion patterns formed by sediment deposited by water flows. This indicates that, billions of years ago, conditions on Mars could have supported life.

The molecules -- which seem to confirm recent findings that a Martian meteorite contained extraterrestrial organic matter -- were found in a drilled sample in the Sheepbed mudstone of the Gale crater -- the location of Curiosity's exploration. The mudstone on the crater floor is consistent with the clay found on Earth from dried-up lakes, formed from sediment on the lake floor -- presenting optimum conditions for the preservation of organic matter.

"We think life began on Earth around 3.8 billion years ago, and our result shows that places on Mars had the same conditions at that time -- liquid water, a warm environment, and organic matter," said Caroline Freissinet of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "So if life emerged on Earth in these conditions, why not on Mars as well?"

NASA RELEASES FREE E-BOOK ON DECODING EXTRATERRESTRIAL

    MESSAGES

Positive_Alien_-_Extraterrestrial.jpgNASA has put out a free, fascinating e-book exploring the possibility of human/extraterrestrial communic... The 300-page book, which has chapters written by more than a dozen different scholars, looks to archaeology and anthropology for clues to decoding extraterrestrial messages, should they ever arrive. In his introduction to the volume, editor Douglas A. Vakoch explains, "Like archaeologists who reconstruct temporally distant civilizations from fragmentary evidence, SETI [Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence] researchers will be expected to reconstruct distant civilizations separated from us by vast expanses of space as well as time. And like anthropologists, who attempt to understand other cultures despite differences in language and social customs, as we attempt to decode and interpret extraterrestrial messages, we will be required to comprehend the mindset of a species that is radically Other."

Addressing a field that has been dominated by astronomers, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, the contributors to this collection raise questions that may have been overlooked by physical scientists about the ease of establishing meaningful communication with an extraterrestrial intelligence. These scholars are grappling with some of the enormous challenges that will face humanity if an information-rich signal emanating from another world is detected. By drawing on issues at the core of contemporary archaeology and anthropology, we can be much better prepared for contact with an extraterrestrial civilization, should that day ever come.
