A cavernous sinkhole opened up in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood Thursday evening after a large sewer line broke beneath the street, officials said.
...An 18-inch sewer main broke beneath the pavement, though Sheehan said they still weren’t sure exactly when the pipe ruptured, and the free flowing liquid eroded the soil supporting the concrete above leaving a gap. Gravity eventually took hold and the pavement collapsed.

Firefighters asked residents of nearby palazzi to evacuate voluntarily, as there was no water or lighting in the area. Hours after the pre-dawn break, authorities were trying to determine Wednesday whether the weakened asphalt could withstand the weight of a crane to extract the waterlogged cars that fell into the hole.
Mayor Dario Nardella stressed that the underground flooding was the result of a gash in a 60-centimeter (two-foot) diameter pipe, one of the major water conduits in the neighborhood, and not a leak in the banks of the Arno.
The scene is near the famed Ponte Vecchio bridge, a favorite spot for tourists shopping for jewelry

Burst water main floods streets at Petersham in Sydney's inner west
A burst water main has flooded an intersection and main thoroughfare at Petersham in Sydney's inner-west.
Sydney Water said the damaged main was at Audley Street and water was flowing towards Trafalgar Street.
Footage of the flooding shows water surging through the intersection of Trafalgar Street at Audley Street.
A number of car have been inundated with water while some businesses were effected by water flow.
Sydney Water said crews were on the scene, shutting the water down.
The principal of Leichhardt Public School, James Reid, wrote a letter to parents this morning to advise them the school and surrounding businesses were without water for more than an hour.
"We cannot determine how long it will take to resolve this matter," Mr Reid wrote.
"If you wish to collect your child early please come to the front office to sign your child out."

A water main burst, buckling streets and sending whitewater cascading through a Visitacion Valley neighborhood in San Francisco on Friday afternoon, forcing public utilities workers to shut off water to more than two dozen homes.
The 6-inch main cracked open at 5:03 p.m. on the 300 block of Rutland Street, forcing its way up through the asphalt and onto the street, threatening homes and businesses with flooding.
“My crews said there was water coming out of the streets and sidewalks aggressively,” said Lt. Jonathan Baxter, the spokesman for the San Francisco Fire Department, which took the first call.
The gushing water buckled the street at Rutland and Harkness Avenue until workers shut off the flow at 6 p.m.
“I look out the window and this huge rush of water was just pouring all over the place,” said Wilfred Escarda, 71, who lives on the block where the pipe broke. He called 911.
“There was a lot of water,” said Charles Sheehan, the spokesman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. “That's normal when a water main breaks. The system is pressurized.”

North Smithfield loses 300,000 gallons in water break
NORTH SMITHFIELD – Town officials are asking residents to cut down on water usage following a major water break off Industrial Drive on Saturday, July 30 that saw the town lose some 300,000 gallons.

The break, which occurred on Steele Street just by National Marker, had caused a partial road collapse by Saturday afternoon.
The town had already issued a mandatory water ban on Friday, July 29, stating in a newsletter that all outdoor watering was banned due to hot weather and dry conditions.
"It's significant," Town Administrator Paulette Hamilton said of the loss. "Under normal conditions this might not be that bad, but for now we're asking residents to refrain from using water as much as possible."
Hamilton said the residents should refrain from outdoor watering for at least "today and tomorrow."
Officials had not yet discovered the cause of the break as of 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, but Hamilton said it could be an old pipe that disintegrated.

Engineers have raced to fix the leak which has left hundreds of houses without water and power across south east London
CARS left in an underground car park overnight have been crushed after a burst water main flooded a town centre.
Shocking new images show battered cars crushed against the roof of the car park in Crayford which was submerged underwater following the water leak which has left hundreds of house holds without water and power.
The vehicles can be seen with their windscreens smashed and impaled against the ceiling after the water caused polystyrene insulation under the Townhill Square car park road surface to expand and rise by four feet. This forced the vehicles trapped inside upwards into the roof.
The car park was damaged during overnight repair work on a burst 12-inch water main in Crayford Road.
The pipe had initially burst on Tuesday afternoon and repairs were ongoing when it burst again on Saturday night causing chaos.
Hundreds of homes in Greenwich, Bexley and Crayford, as well as large parts of Dartford, in Kent, have been left without water due to the issue while a high street has also been submerged underwater.
Motorist Sadia Farzana Chitra, 42, who lives in a flat in Townhall Square, told KMFM: “Everything is completely submerged. My car park is at the back of the block and that is totally underwater — about five or six cars are completely gone.
“It is very devastating. My car and my neighbour’s car, which is a van, are damaged and the firefighters took a picture of them for us and told me it could be a write-off.”
Water supplies were returned to normal this afternoon with the water levels now receding.
Thames Water senior operations manager Danny Leamon said: “This is an extremely difficult repair, due to the location and depth of the pipe, and we are very frustrated to have suffered this major setback.
“The second burst and flooding is now under control and water pressure should be returning to normal for customers.
“We’re really sorry for this added disruption our work is causing, and are doing everything possible to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
A spokesperson for Gallions Housing Association said:”We have been on-site throughout the day assisting Thames Water, the fire brigade and the police following the burst water main in Crayford town centre.
“All Gallions residents are safe, have clean water and there has been no water ingress into anyone’s home.
“Water has damaged some people’s cars in the car park in the basement, and Thames Water have advised that they will have officers based at the library tomorrow to get all of the details from those affected.”

Transport for London had urged motorists to avoid the area and warned of long queues across south-east London.
Amazed residents shared their images on social media of the flooding which included cars floating in a town centre car park.

Two workers killed following water main break in Boston
OCTOBER 21, 2016
BOSTON (WHDH) - Two people are presumed dead after a water main break flooded a trench where several workers were working.
A private construction crew was working on a brownstone on Dartmouth Street between Montgomery and Tremont when a water main break sent water into the trench. Several workers were able to escape the scene, but two could not.
Recovery efforts are continuing in the South End as workers are currently working on securing the structure before the bodies can be recovered.
Witnesses described a panicked scene as water rushed into the street, with workers escaping and then rushing to try to save their colleagues.
Workers were “visibly shaken” after the incident.

Fire officials say a “recovery operation” is currently underway.
“I think it’s going to be quite a while,” before emergency crews can recover the deceased, said Boston Commissioner William Evans.
Police, fire, and federal workplace investigators are currently on the scene.
Water is turned off in the area, the road has been blocked off, and city officials are asking people to avoid the area.
According to the commissioner, the hole was roughly 12 feet deep.
The Boston Fire Department has requested a response from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
Officials are currently investigating the structural integrity of the sidewalk and street.
Boston Police have confirmed that Dartmouth Street will be closed to traffic from Tremont to Warren and is expected to be closed through the evening commute. Police ask the public to avoid the area.

A busy London high street was left submerged in water after the capital was hit by its third burst water main in a week.
Hundreds of residents in Stoke Newington, north London, were forced to flee their homes after the 30-inch water main ruptured at around midday today.
Dramatic photographs and video footage show gallons of water flowing down the high street as emergency workers and dozens of firefighters raced to the scene and evacuated around 150 properties - including a block of flats.

Residents in Stoke Newington, north London, were forced to flee their homes after the 30-inch water main ruptured today
Dramatic photographs and video footage show gallons of water flowing down the high street as emergency workers attended the scene
More than 350 residents fled their homes this afternoon as Hackney Council set up a rest centre at Stoke Newington Town Hall - before Thames Water put up some residents in hotels.
Six fire engines and some 40 firefighters were sent to the scene in an effort to minimise flood damage.
It is the third time a burst water main has caused flooding in London this week, with residents in Islington affected on Monday.
Meanwhile, stunned residents were met with torrents of water flowing down the street and into their homes in Blackheath, south-east London, yesterday.
Alan Scott posted footage of residents wading through the water in Stoke Newington earlier today, with the caption: 'FLOOD!!! Stoke Newington right now. It's chaos.'
Other residents who were left stranded in their flats shared photographs on Twitter, with Sarah Nurse writing: 'Absolute carnage outside our flats! #stokenewington #flood #stranded!'
Thames Water said it had stopped the flow of water in Stoke Newington, adding that it was working with the London Fire Brigade to reduce the impact of flooding.
Bob Collington, director of Thames Water, said: 'It has been an extremely difficult week and, having visited and spoken to a number of those impacted, I am personally devastated for those customers who have suffered flooding so close to Christmas.
'We are doing everything we can to help them and will make sure they are not left out of pocket for what has happened.
'The bursts are a clear reminder that we need to keep investing in our ageing and sometimes fragile network, with many pipes in London well over 100 years old.
'I have started a full investigation into recent events to understand what has gone wrong and, as a top priority, will look at every single way possible to reduce the risk of any further disruption.'
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said several basements in the area were underwater following the burst pipe.
Station Manager Nicol McCallum, who was at the scene, said: 'Crews used specialist inflatable boats to evacuate the most vulnerable residents and help others recover valuables.
'Firefighters laid down sandbags to try and minimise the water damage.'
She added that emergency teams were working to divert water away from homes and businesses.
Hackney Police advised the public to avoid the area following the flooding.
