"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.
"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

Tailand: Households near Phu Tap Berk evacuated over landslide fears.
Aug 7, 2018
The Governor of Petchabun province has ordered the evacuation of three households after finding a crack in the road leading to Phu Tap Berk that indicates the possibility of a landslide; meanwhile Chaiyaphum has ordered a crack in a concrete dyke in Subsaithong be repaired immediately.
A check of Highway 2331 leading up to Phu Tap Berk has revealed a one to two meter stretch of eroded roadway and a crack 10-70 centimeters wide stretching for 25-150 meters along the road. The crack descends through three layers of soil and would signal danger if it were to reach the fourth layer. Due to forecasts of more rain in the region, Governor of Petchabun Suebsak Iamcharoen has ordered that three households in the path of a possible landslide be evacuated and for evacuation rehearsals for another 25 households be undertaken. The roadway has been completely closed but some local residents are reportedly still using it, while an alternative route is being negotiated.

Philippines: Preventive evacuation done in remote village in Iloilo.
Aug 7, 2018
ILOILO CITY — Six families in the upland and far-flung village of Igcatambor, Miag-ao, Iloilo temporarily moved to an evacuation center over fears of possible landslides in the area.
In an interview Tuesday, Ronan John Austria, head of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), said that Mayor Macario Napulan ordered the “forced evacuation of these families on Sunday as a preemptive measure.”
“There are some areas in the barangay (village) that have cracks on the soil. While there has been no landslide yet, the order of the mayor is for the safety of the residents,” he said.
Austria said some of these families, composed of more or less 30 individual residents, evacuated to the Igcatambor Elementary School while others decided to stay with their relatives in nearby villages.
He said they continue to monitor the area, along with other villages in their town. “The upland villages of our town are prone to landslide when there is rain, be it not really heavy but sustained or continuous rain,” he said.
Austria said personnel of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau 6 (Western Visayas) are expected to visit Igcatambor within the day to check the area where the ground cracks were found.
“They will clarify things out. They will check the situation and the possibility of landslide,” he added.
Austria said they will lay down their plans for the area based on the recommendation of MGB-6.

Liputan6.com, Banjarnegara - Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java was identified as one of the most landslide-prone areas in Central Java. The ground movement haunts some areas, especially those in the mountains with high elevation levels.
The dimensions are quite large, with a depth of two meters and a length of 20 meters. In addition, the road is also cracked. No kidding, cracks stretched along 50 meters.
"The Limbangan-Plipiran road below Dukuh Munggang is 300 meters from the Scales, cracks and sinks cannot be passed by vehicles," said the Chairperson of the Banjarnegara Indonesian Inter-Population Radio (RAPI), Tejo Sumarno, Tuesday, August 28, 2018.
The soil movement that occurred in the Munggang Hamlet shows that even though the risk of landslides decreases in the dry season, it does not mean that the risk of soil movement is completely absent. Because, triggering landslides can be triggered by other causes.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Banjarnegara BPBD, Arif Rachman explained, from the results of the temporary assessment, landslides that caused the road body to collapse were triggered by the leaking of the irrigation channel which was above the avalanche area.

Philippines: Massive landslide buries 24 homes in Cebu.

A large landslide buried between 20 and 24 homes near a limestone quarry site on the fringes of Naga City of Cebu Province in the central Philippines early September 20, 2018. Most of the residents were still asleep when the slide took place. 12 bodies have been retrieved and another 12 people pulled out alive in the first few hours. Rescuers are looking for about 50 to 80 trapped people.
The slide was caused by days of heavy monsoon rains and comes just several days after passage of Super Typhoon "Mangkhut," the most powerful storm of the year so far, and another massive landslide that left dozens dead.
Although Naga City didn't take a direct hit from the typhoon, the storm system exacerbated monsoon rains and the city received plenty of water over the past couple of days.
About 20 to 24 houses with all the people inside were buried, officials said, adding that rescuers were looking for about 50 to 80 people.

Entire community in northeastern B.C. ordered to evacuate due to landslide
The Peace River Regional District has ordered the entire area of Old Fort evacuated, a week after a slow-moving landslide cut off the only road to the small community in northeastern B.C. — but at least one resident says some refuse to leave.
In a statement, the district said the order was issued because of an “immediate danger to life” due to a slow-moving landslide that struck last Sunday about one kilometre away from the main part of the community, which has about 30 homes and about 200 residents.
The community is about a 15-minute drive south of Fort St. John, flanked by large hills in a valley running alongside the Peace River. Landslides are common in the area.
This landslide has wiped out the only road leading in and out of Old Fort, about one kilometre away from the homes, and the Peace River District says there now appears to be some instability in the part of the hill directly behind the homes as the slide continues to slowly shift.
The district has issued previous evacuation orders and alerts to a number of properties throughout the week.
Resident Gord Pardy says power to the community has been on and off throughout the week as the slide has shifted and crews have attempted to restore services.
“I’m very angry. I’m extremely angry. And it’s because we’ve been living through this process where it seems like nobody is in control of the situation,” Pardy said.
Boat taxis and buses for evacuees
Boat taxis and buses will be transporting evacuees along the Peace River and then by bus to a reception centre at the Pomeroy Sport Centre in Fort St. John, just north of Old Fort.
The district says domestic animals — including dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils and fish — will be allowed on the boat taxis and buses if they are caged or on a leash.
That’s not of much help to Pardy and his wife, Bobbi, who own a 32-year-old horse they don’t expect would survive the journey.
“We’re going to fight for it,” Bobbi Pardy said.
The district said residents should not return home until the order is rescinded. But Gord Pardy said he is one of many residents who have no intention of leaving.
Pardy doesn’t deny the slide is a big deal — but he doesn’t think his home is at any risk because the slide is moving so slowly and he says it doesn’t appear to be affecting the area directly behind his home.
“I don’t think it’s going to get to my home. I’m worried about some of the homes that are on the edge of the community more than mine,” he said.
“I don’t think it’s going to get here and there’s no indication that the hill behind us is moving.”
Pardy says he’s also worried about keeping his home warm and safe. Temperatures have been dipping well below zero at night, he said, and it snowed Saturday night.
“My house will freeze. I’ve got to keep the heat on in the house,” he said.
“There’s many people that are going to be staying here and keeping an eye on things. I think that’s the best security we’re going to have.”
But a spokesperson for the regional district said staying put is a risky plan.
“We have an engineering geologist who has looked at the site and cannot guarantee life safety,” said Deborah Jones-Middleton, emergency operation centre director for the Peace River Regional District.
Landslide movement ‘unpredictable’
The landslide has been ripping up the earth near the small town since Sept. 30, knocking out heat, power and water for residents.
The district said a helicopter survey of the area found evidence of stress cracks and other signs of instability throughout the area.
It’s also posed a risk for crews, who aren’t able to access the area, the district said.
The district said the landslide’s movement remains “significant and unpredictable.” Recent snowfall has also reduced visibility

Seven killed in 'massive landslide' in Uganda.
Oct 11, 2018
At least seven people were killed in a ‘massive landslide’ after heavy rains in eastern Uganda Thursday, the local Red Cross said.
‘The preliminary report indicates that the number is likely to increase from the reported seven but we are yet to establish the actual numbers,’ Uganda Red Cross spokeswoman Irene Nakasiita said in a statement.
Nakasiita described the situation as tense with ‘community members... scared and fleeing from their homes.’
‘In the meantime, the whole district, Bududa is still experiencing heavy downpour and we are expecting more of the same in other landslide prone areas.’
Bududa district in the foothills of Mount Elgon, which lies on the border between Uganda and Kenya, is a high risk area for landslides.
At least 100 people were reported killed in a landslide in Bududa in March 2010 and in 2012 landslides destroyed three villages.
Government efforts to move vulnerable people to neighbouring districts have faced resistance from residents.

No fewer than 60 houses and historical sites have been destroyed by landslides at Anderson along Marina street in Calabar, Cross River State.
Also threatened, DAILY POST investigations revealed, are the Palace of the Obong of Calabar, Edgerley Memorial primary School and Primary Health Centre among others.
Cross River State is also at the risk of losing some historical sites such as the European Cemetery.
Speaking at the erosion sites, the village head of Esuk Effiom, Anderson Akoi, Dr Effiom Ewa Ekeng Magnus Henshaw explained that the area started experiencing erosion challenges over 30 years ago.
He said, “But for the intervention of the federal government in some parts of the sites which helped to mitigate the impact of the landslide, the movement of the earth would have been devastating.
“At the moment, the gully site is expanding at a very fast rate”. Henshaw explained that over the years, the community had tried within the limit of available resources but the rate at which the gully is expanding with new sites created at a very short notice put the residents at a serious risk.

slope works and poor water management removed 600,000 cubic meters of mass in the south.
The saturation of the soil, together with inadequate buildings in the upper part of a hillside in El Sabanero neighborhood of San Vito, Coto Brus, destroyed a house, a concrete factory and partially closed the road that connects with Paso Real de Buenos Aires.

The house, which belonged to I Nengah Suarta, was crowded at the time of the accident because relatives had come to visit a sick family member, according to an article by Kumparan. The whole group were reportedly watching television together when debris from the landslide collided with the residence at around 7pm.
