Landslides

"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.

"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

Mexico: The landslides continue in Lomas del Rubí.

    Apr 20, 2018

The neighbors of the houses that are still standing in the neighborhood of Lomas del Rubí saw their rest interrupted when they heard the opening and enlargement of a new crack in the Avenida Liberal Patria avenue on Thursday night.

For a little over two months, inhabitants of the Lomas del Rubí neighborhood witnessed how what began as a small fault in one of the streets spread until the landslide resulted in the collapse of 90 homes.

In spite of the landslides, it seemed that the disaster had stopped in the Liberal Patria Patria avenue, where the buildings remained standing and undamaged.

However, on Thursday night a crack appeared in the road, which spread and caused another house to collapse and three others to slide and are about to collapse.

China: Landslide kills 9 people in northern China.

BEIJING — A landslide in northern China trapped and killed nine people Monday morning beneath the falling earth.

More than a hundred firefighters, rescue workers and medical staff were sent to the scene in Shanxi province, the Luliang municipal government said on its official social media account.

The landslide hit shortly before 5 a.m., the post noted. Rescuers with four large machines and five ambulances looked for the people who had been trapped but the search concluded by early Monday afternoon.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the landslide or the identities of the deceased.

The mountainous Luliang prefecture has been hit by a number of landslides over the years, including one in 2008 that killed 19 people.

Uganda: More than 2,000 people are currently homeless after fresh landslides hit about eight villages in Bududa Sub-county

    Apr 30, 2018

The landslides, which were triggered by hours of heavy rains, swept away homes, gardens and livestock, prompting residents to flee the largely mountainous area. The most affected are Shiaza, Buhasiru, Buwaninda, Sholelo, Nafunane, Bunateme and Bukhalobo villages.

Residents said the mudslides occurred during the night as most of them were sleeping. Residents have appealed to government for aid. “We have no shelter, food or clothes because our crops have been buried,” said Prisca Nandudu, a resident.

Bududa District chairperson Wilson Watira urged government to come good on its promise to move the people to safer areas before more lives are lost.

Bududa has been prone to land and mudslides for generations. The worst happened on March 1, 2010 when more than 300 people were buried in Nametsi.

There has been fierce resistance to a government effort to relocate the most vulnerable people in Bududa and neighbouring districts, with activists saying it would be even more disastrous for villagers to abandon their ancestral homes. Even those who were relocated to a camp for refugees after the 2010 landslides secretly returned to Bududa.

The cracking-sliding landslide at Caijiazhuang in China on 30th April.

    May 1, 2018

Caijiazhuang village: a cracking-sliding landslide that has killed nine people
Yesterday I highlighted recently published research into the diurnal cycle and its impacts on cracking-sliding landslides on the Loess Plateau in China. Ironically, the same day an example of such a landslide occurred, on this occasion at Caijiazhuang village in Lishi District of Lyuliang City, in Shanxi Province. Xinhua has an unusually brief report on the landslide, which notes that:

“Nine people have died in a landslide in north China’s Shanxi Province, local authorities said Monday. The landslide happened at around 4:57 a.m. Monday in Caijiazhuang village in Lishi District of Lyuliang City, the local publicity department said.”

The Li et al. (2018) research that I featured yesterday noted that these landslides occur preferentially between 10 pm and 5 am, so this landslide fits the pattern.

The Straits Times has a couple of images of the landslide:-

On the face of it this appears to meet the description of a cracking-sliding landslide, and the material appears to be loess or something similar. This image shows the landslide from a different perspective:-
    .

The presence of the chimneys suggests that this might have been a brick pit, which in turn might imply that undercutting of the slope might have been a factor in this instability, perhaps. There are certainly signs of instability in the adjacent slopes, though perhaps not on the scale of this landslide. Li et al. (2018) found that a very high proportion of these landslides were associated with slope disturbance of some type.

According to Red Cross, over 300 more families have been affected by rains after their property was destroyed.

Areas most affected are Kangema, Mathioya, Kahuro and Kigumo subcounties where huge chunks of farms were swept away.

Kangema was most affected as large cracks formed across farms and destroyed houses.

An assessment by Red Cross has indicated some houses sunk while others were completely destroyed as the earth moved.

Mount Kenya Red Cross regional manager Gitonga Mugambi has said this has left many families stranded and dependent on well-wishers.

Mugambi said many houses have also been declared unfit for habitation in Gitugi village, Mathioya subcounty, and residents are now being hosted by their neighbours.

“Many of them have been left without a source of livelihood as tea and coffee bushes were swept away,” he said on Thursday.

Some families, Mugambi said, will be forced to find alternative land to build homes.

He urged the national and county governments to help families relocate and obtain land.

Mugambi said other than providing food, the organisation is also providing counselling.

“Some people who were doing very well in life have now been reduced to depending on relief and that has taken a toll on most of them,” he said.

Mugambi expressed concern some families have refused to relocate even though their houses have huge cracks and are falling apart.

He said those refusing to move are putting their lives at risk.

Five people died in separate incidents of landslides in Kahuro and Gitugi areas and scores of others were rescued after being trapped in the mud.

John Kihia, a Kangema resident, narrated how he found his house “hanging” one morning after part of his house came apart.

“My kitchen sunk and my main house developed major cracks, forcing me to move my family to my neighbour’s home,” he said.

Kihia said he now relies on help from his neighbours and other well-wishers.
