"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.
"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

Landslide causes portion of Route 30, apartment building to collapse in East Pittsburgh
A portion of Route 30 in East Pittsburgh, along with a nearby apartment building, collapsed early Saturday as an ongoing landslide worsened, according to officials.
The building collapsed around 5 a.m., causing authorities to evacuate that building and three others, said Lori Payne, East Pittsburgh police chief.
The complex was occupied at the time, but no one was injured, Payne said.
Officials evacuated two buildings of the complex Friday, and the remaining four were evacuated Saturday after the collapse, Payne said.
One building completely collapsed and two others are damaged so far, Payne said.
PennDOT is paying for hotels for the residents.
Route 30 is closed in both directions, Payne said.
The borough has not had issues with landslides in the area before this week, Payne said.
A couple houses were evacuated along the borough's border with North Braddock for a separate landslide issue, Payne said.
More residents along Electric Avenue may have to relocate because they may lose power, Payne said.

A street in Horche sinks after a landslide.
Apr 13, 2018
The rain these days could be after this landslide that has caused the collapse of a street in Horche, in Guadalajara. They collapsed 100 meters of asphalt and, in turn, the slope that protected this road fell on part of a house. Having seen the images, fortunately, it was empty at that moment.
In addition there has been the fall of a wall on part of a house. Mud and rocks have fallen on a house. Barely half a meter wide. And what remains remains in a disturbing balance. At his feet, Antonio's house, engulfed by rocks, dirt and mud. Fortunately, he and his family were not there last night. It was a neighbor, Fernando, who at midnight alerted of what happened.
In the street they were already warned and these fences warned of the risk of collapse. The mudslide has also left several homes without water by breaking a supply pipe that they are trying to repair urgently.
Less than 5 kilometers away, the machinery tries to clear the National 320, as it passes through Tendilla. There also the rain has caused the sliding of tons of stone and mud

Utah: Riverdale landslide moves closer to homes.
Apr 13, 2018
RIVERDALE, Utah – The latest measurement of a landslide in Riverdale revealed that three to four feet of additional land have recently fallen away — prompting new concerns that three homes situated above the slide are in danger of collapsing down the hillside.
The measurement, taken on Wednesday by geologists with Utah’s Geologic Hazards Program, showed that the new movement took place since April 3, according to Ben Erickson with the Utah Geological Survey.
Erickson said the top of the slide is now about 12 feet from one of the homes above. In all, three homes are under mandatory evacuations with the residents of a neighboring home evacuating voluntarily. If nothing changes, he said it is “inevitable” that the homes will be completely lost.

"It's like living next to a time bomb. You don't know when it's gonna go off," said homeowner Joe Gollick.
Gollick's home is just steps from the slide along Lander Street. He said the street has been cracking for years, and city crews have been there and repaved it, but Gollick says, a significant portion of the road fell when the Greenleaf Street landslide happened in February.
"If it gets worse, we're in trouble," said Gollick.
Gollick said the trees that were once level with Lander Street are now sliding down the hillside, and he hasn't been able to access his garage for weeks because of how much of the road has fallen and Gollick said the power company even moved transformers from the utility poles in front of his home, for fear they too could fall down the hill.

Uganda: More than 2,000 people are currently homeless after fresh landslides hit about eight villages in Bududa Sub-county
Apr 30, 2018
The landslides, which were triggered by hours of heavy rains, swept away homes, gardens and livestock, prompting residents to flee the largely mountainous area. The most affected are Shiaza, Buhasiru, Buwaninda, Sholelo, Nafunane, Bunateme and Bukhalobo villages.
Residents said the mudslides occurred during the night as most of them were sleeping. Residents have appealed to government for aid. “We have no shelter, food or clothes because our crops have been buried,” said Prisca Nandudu, a resident.
Bududa District chairperson Wilson Watira urged government to come good on its promise to move the people to safer areas before more lives are lost.
Bududa has been prone to land and mudslides for generations. The worst happened on March 1, 2010 when more than 300 people were buried in Nametsi.
There has been fierce resistance to a government effort to relocate the most vulnerable people in Bududa and neighbouring districts, with activists saying it would be even more disastrous for villagers to abandon their ancestral homes. Even those who were relocated to a camp for refugees after the 2010 landslides secretly returned to Bududa.

Caijiazhuang village: a cracking-sliding landslide that has killed nine people
Yesterday I highlighted recently published research into the diurnal cycle and its impacts on cracking-sliding landslides on the Loess Plateau in China. Ironically, the same day an example of such a landslide occurred, on this occasion at Caijiazhuang village in Lishi District of Lyuliang City, in Shanxi Province. Xinhua has an unusually brief report on the landslide, which notes that:
“Nine people have died in a landslide in north China’s Shanxi Province, local authorities said Monday. The landslide happened at around 4:57 a.m. Monday in Caijiazhuang village in Lishi District of Lyuliang City, the local publicity department said.”
The Li et al. (2018) research that I featured yesterday noted that these landslides occur preferentially between 10 pm and 5 am, so this landslide fits the pattern.
The Straits Times has a couple of images of the landslide:-
On the face of it this appears to meet the description of a cracking-sliding landslide, and the material appears to be loess or something similar. This image shows the landslide from a different perspective:-
.
The presence of the chimneys suggests that this might have been a brick pit, which in turn might imply that undercutting of the slope might have been a factor in this instability, perhaps. There are certainly signs of instability in the adjacent slopes, though perhaps not on the scale of this landslide. Li et al. (2018) found that a very high proportion of these landslides were associated with slope disturbance of some type.

UPDATE: Collapsed retaining wall closes Chimney Rock State Park
Updated: May 28, 2018 12:58 PM EDT
CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. (WNCN/AP) - Authorities said that Chimney Rock State Park has closed because a parking lot retaining wall has collapsed.
Officials at Chimney Rock State Park said the wall collapsed Saturday after a week of heavy rain. More rain is expected the next several days as the remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto pass by the west.
Authorities say visitors should check the park's website at https://www.chimneyrockpark.com/ to see when it reopens.
Chimney Rock State Park has seen several rock slides in recent years including one on October that closed the park for several weeks.
The park in Rutherford County was set aside more than 100 years ago.
PREVIOUS:
As officials are urging evacuations in parts of the North Carolina mountains, a wall has collapsed near a popular tourist spot.
Chimney Rock State Park is closed until further notice after a collapsed retention wall was discovered Sunday morning.
The collapse happened at the upper parking lot.
Photographs shared by the Chimney Rock State Park showed a significant portion of the parking lot eroded, with concrete barricades between the nearby road and the collapsed parking lot.
The damage will need to be assessed and stabilized before the park would allow any more visitors.
There is no indication at this time when Chimney Rock State Park will be reopened.
Meanwhile, officials in Polk County, where a woman died in a mudslide last week, are recommending voluntary evacuations of some areas as a subtropical storm threatens.
