"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.
"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

Landslide Closes Golf Course in Southern British Columbia (Feb 20)
Water is pooling, and there are large craters that have appeared on the course.
"It's not the first time that has happened, but in my memory, it's the worst that I've seen. There's no questions about it, it's quite a mess," Fauquier fire chief and golf club member John Banta told Daybreak South's Chris Walker.
Banta said two out of nine holes are affected — both between the lake and the now-crumbled bluff where the clubhouse sits.
Banta isn't sure what caused the damage.
Fauquier is across the lake from a mudslide that has closed Highway 6 , one kilometer west of the Needles Ferry.

Afghanistan hit by deadly avalanches
AVALANCHES caused by a heavy winter snow have killed at least 124 people in north-eastern Afghanistan.
The avalanches buried homes across four northeast provinces, killing those beneath, said Mohammad Aslam Syas, the deputy director of the Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority.
The province worst hit appeared to be Panjshir province, about 100km northeast of the capital, Kabul, where the avalanches destroyed or damaged around 100 homes.
Rescue teams had been dispatched to the affected areas and casualties were expected to rise, Syas said.

The heavy snowstorms, which began early Tuesday, hampered rescue efforts.
Snowfall from the storm was nearly one-metre deep in places and fallen trees blocked roads in the Panjshir Valley.
Avalanches in the valley’s Dara district affected up to 600 families, according to people trying to reach the area to assist in rescue efforts.

“People there have told me that two of my relatives have been killed and eight others are still under the snow,” said an Afghan who goes by the single name Sharafudin.
“My son and I are trying to get through to see if we can help find their bodies. But it will take us at least three or four hours to get there because of the snow and the road is very narrow, so we have to walk, the car can’t get through.”
Large parts of Afghanistan have been covered in snow as a major storm interrupted an otherwise mild and dry winter.

Afghanistan has suffered through some three decades of war since the Soviet invasion in 1979. But natural disasters such as landslides, floods and avalanches have taken a toll on a country with little infrastructure or development outside of its major cities.
In May, a massive landslide killed anywhere from 250 to 2700 people, authorities said at the time. Another landslide in 2012 killed 71 people.

Dozens of tourists were transported on a steel cable across a river to the Machu Picchu Inca ruins in Peru after a landslide disrupted travel in the area.
The landslide occurred early on Wednesday and caused the Aobamba River to overflow and damage a pedestrian bridge used to access the tourist attraction.
On Thursday, authorities helped visitors cross the river into other side while the bridge was being repaired.
As a safety precaution, government authorities asked tourism agencies and locals travelling with groups from the Santa Teresa district to Machu Picchu to avoid visiting the site.
Heavy rains triggered the landslide that damaged the bridge.

URUMQI, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- More than 500 people and 100 vehicles have been trapped after mudslides triggered by melting snow hit a section of the Karakoram Highway in northwest China's Xinjiang on Friday.
The blocked road is located in Akto County of the Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture, which has been plagued by heavy snow since Thursday.
But with rising temperatures, the melting snow caused mudslides, which cut off the section linking Kashgar to Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of the Karakoram Highway, said Dong Bo, head of a border check point in the prefecture.
Local government authorities have sent rescuers to clear the road and evacuate trapped people.
The Karakoram Highway, which runs more than 1,000 km, links China's Xinjiang with Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region. The road is frequently hit by geological disasters owing to its high elevation.

2 Massive River-Blocking Landslides in the High Mountains of South Asia (Mar 3)
According to details, the river blockade has caused the creation of a lake that is almost 1.5 kilometers long and the water level is continuously increasing.
The water surge has reportedly started inundating the land in the region, creating panic and fear among the local community members.
Humla
Thousands of people living in the downstream villages of Karnali River Basin were put on high alert on Tuesday morning after the water volume in one of the two tributaries of the country’s longest river dropped significantly, raising fears of possible damming upstream.
Locals along with authorities in Humla district rang alarm bells after Limi Khola, which flows into the Karnali, recorded a dramatic 80 percent drop in water levels since Tuesday morning. Limi and Muchu rivers feed the Karnali.
“We have suspected damming of the river in the high altitude region along the Nepal-China border after the water level dropped significantly in the rivers flowing in Humla. However, we are yet to ascertain whether the river is blocked due to an avalanche or has frozen,” said Keshab Adhikari, deputy inspector general of police in the mid-western region, who is updating the situation in Humla.

Isle of Wight landslip: Remaining homes evacuated
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-26238665
Residents remaining on a crumbling road on the Isle of Wight are to evacuate their properties as the land there is becoming increasingly unstable.
Occupants of nine homes in Undercliff Drive, between Niton and St Lawrence, were advised to leave on Friday after a landslip caused the road to collapse.
A handful initially refused to leave but those remaining are expected to leave in the next 24 hours.
One evacuated bungalow has already suffered serious structural damage.
Some residents had told the council they were reluctant to leave because their insurers said moving out would invalidate their insurance.
Council deputy leader Steve Stubbings said: "We can't tell them they've got to leave but we have advised them to leave because we are concerned about continuing movement in the area.

Residents urged to evacuate after Yeager Airport hillside collapses
Kanawha County emergency officials are urging residents who live in the vicinity of Yeager Airport along Barlow and Keystone drives to evacuate as the hillside in that area is beginning to collapse.
What began over the weekend as a hillside slip of the airport’s engineered fill, which surrounds its runway overrun area, has turned into a landslide, said Kanawha Deputy Emergency Manager and Fire Coordinator C.W. Sigman.
Airport officials announced Wednesday they had evacuated six people from two houses in the area after a portion of the hillside underneath the main runway’s emergency overrun area slipped about 6 feet over the weekend. The Keystone Apostolic Church has also been advised to move its services.
Airport engineers and emergency services personnel have been monitoring the situation around-the-clock. Earlier Thursday, officials closed a portion of Keystone Drive as the hill continued to slip.
Sigman said he arrived at the scene shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Within 45 minutes, he and other officials watch the hillside begin to rapidly crumble.
“We’ve had three or four major slips since we’ve been here bringing down trees and a lot of soil,” he said.
Sigman said officials have been keeping a safe distance from the area. While they don’t think the landslide has affected the Keystone Apostolic Church, they believe it’s already caused significant damage to at least one home in the area.
While only two homes had been evacuated as of Wednesday, Metro 911 is now asking all residents who live near the airport on Barlow and Keystone drives to evacuate the area.
The crumbling hillside was part of and engineered fill the airport had constructed as part of its runway expansion project, which was completed about eight years ago. About 1.5 million cubic feet of dirt was used to build up the hillside by about 270 feet.
Airport officials now say about a third of that fill has slipped downhill.
Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department Deputy T.M. Hill said the landslide has toppled several power poles, causing outages across the area. Deputy K.L. Washburn said there was natural gas bubbling up from ruptured pipe under nearby creek. Officials have notified the gas company, which initiated shutoff procedures.
Mountaineer Gas spokesman Larry Meador confirmed there was a leak in a small gas line but the problem has been contained.
“There’s no danger at this time with our gas line,” Meador said.
He said to contain the leak, the company shut off the gas supply to about 30 customers along Keystone Drive. He said crews would work to restore service to those homes later today by piping in gas from a different direction.
The Kanawha County Board of Education said three bus routes would be affected by the landslide and road closure

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: A large farm pond collapsed Thursday due to heavy rains, causing a torrent of muddy water to sweep through a north Lebanon town, injuring two people and blocking the main Hasroun-Bsharri road.
The overnight rain combined by warm wind blowing across the mountains around Hasroun caused the snow to melt down the plains, leading to the collapse of the pond and leaving several homes flooded with muddy water.
A number of vehicles along the Hasroun-Bsharri road were also washed away by the floods.
The town’s municipality, Civil Defense units, the Lebanese Red Cross and a number of bulldozers reopened the road after it had been blocked for four hours.
Charbel Touma, who was in his shop when floods carried uprooted trees and debris into his workshop, suffered a broken shoulder.

Over 1800 Landslides in Bulgaria in One Week (Mar 18)
The worst-affected areas are Smolyan, Assenovgrad, Devin and Krichim.
In the Rhodopes, the landslide between Bachkovo and Narechen was blocking the road from Plovdiv to Smolyan for a third day on March 17. Estimates are that about 10 000 tons of rock came down with the landslide.
Cleanup work was continuing at as fast a pace as possible. The route, on the way to the winter resort of Pamporovo, usually serves about 100 000 people daily.
The fallen stones are so large that they cannot be loaded on to trucks. Special equipment has been brought in, two hydraulic hammers to break up the huge rocks.
A landslide between the villages of Gjakova and Kremenik blocked the road near Dupnitsa. There was great danger of a further collapse, Bulgarian National Television said.
A landslide closed one of the most popular tourist routes in the Zlatni Pyasutsi Natural Park near Varna. Collapsing earth and trees destroyed one of the bridges, while large boulders came down from a nearby slope.
The road to the Bulgarian village of Bankya, municipality of Trun, has been blocked by a landslide, reports on March 17 said.
A passenger train travelling from Troyan to Levski derailed on March 17 after hitting a fallen rock in the stretch between the railway stations of Albanitsa and Hlevene.

Cliff Fissure Continues to Grow in Central Texas (Mar 17)
Last June, a palatial home dangled above Lake Whitney before a demolition crew sent it tumbling into the water.
The same cliff fissure that caused it is still growing.
"It could go into the lake at any time and be a danger to anyone on the water," according to neighbor Steve Mellgren.
Accounts of large rock chunks falling into the lake are common. Authorities have taken steps to inform people of the danger, including installing buoys in the lake to warn boaters to keep away.
But local and federal authorities say they can do little more than monitor threats of a collapse when it occurs on private property.
Tom Hemrick, Hill County's emergency management coordinator, said boaters need to be cautious when they pull close to the cliff, noting that a fisherman several years ago was killed when an outcropping fell on him.
"We're very concerned about the safety along our lake," Hemrick said.
The fissure on Mellgren's land extends down 80 to 90 feet and does not immediately affect his home, Hemrick said, adding that it's difficult to determine whether any collapse is imminent. Complicating the situation are underwater caverns that could destabilize land above.
Mellgren said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers should be more involved in finding solutions.
The agency acknowledged in a statement that the crack presents a dangerous situation and will work to maximize safety, but added that "private property owners are responsible for correcting the problem."
Robert Webb is still dealing with his own problems after his property collapsed into the water last year only three years after he purchased it. He said his homeowner's policy does not include coverage for "ground movement" and has sued his insurer.
Webb estimates it will cost more than $100,000 to remove the debris and the home's foundation, which still dangles over the cliff. Demolition crews are wary that removing the foundation will trigger another collapse.
Both homeowners say they did not anticipate erosion would be a major issue when they purchased their properties.
"I was assured by everyone there when I bought the property that there had been engineering studies done and everything was safe," Webb said.

The small picturesque coastal towns and mountainous northern regions offer the same sorts of experiences as Italy or southern France. But those same mountains that are so much fun to drive through can also produce devastating landslides, and here we have some footage of a highway that was completely destroyed by one.The footage was shot by a drone, so it's easy to see the extent of the damage.
We certainly hope it's repaired soon because it looks like it offered some good driving.

Peru Mudslide Desroys 65 Homes, 7 Killed, Emergency Declared (Mar 23)
“The Government of Peru has declared a 60-day Emergency in the district of Lurigancho-Chosica, following extreme infrastructure destruction caused by severe landslides over the past hours. The emergency declaration is aimed at implementing immediate, necessary measures to respond and restore the areas affected by landslides of mud and rock. Announced by President Ollanta Humala, the initiative followed the formation of Pedregal, Carossio, Rayos de Sol, Quirio, San Antonio, California, La Trinchera, Buenos Aires, La Cantuna, Moyopampa, La Libertad and Mariscal Castilla ravines, located in the said district. According to a supreme decree, published today in the official gazette El Peruano, the adoption of such urgent measures will allow Lima and Lurigancho-Chosica Municipalities to execute response and rehabilitation actions in coordination with the National Institute for Civil Defense (Indeci) and various ministries. Actions include the restoration of basic services and reconstruction of infrastructure, and can be modified in accordance with the needs and security requirements that might arise during the execution.”
A torrent of mud and water sent car-sized boulders crashing through the town of Chosica, 47 km (29 miles) from the capital Lima.
At least seven people were killed and 65 houses destroyed.
Televised images showed police breaking through the wall of one home to recover the bodies of 23-year-old Ana Marino and her 3-year-old son, Stefano. Mother was clutching child.
The country's main east-west highway was blocked and residents are asking for equipment to clear up debris.
Floodwaters smashed through brick walls and carried cars, animals and furniture through Chosica's streets.
The state of emergency was called for 60 days to give powers to the local authorities to re-establish power and water supplies, and initiate a clean-up operation.
Residents in the town have asked the authorities for diggers and heavy equipment.

Talks to Fix Wyoming Landslide Move Slowly as Ground Itself
The Town of Jackson and property owners continue to negotiate how they might divvy up the multimillion-dollar cost to stop once and for all a slow-moving landslide that for a few weeks last April threatened to wipe out dozens of homes and apartments and a few businesses.
Mediated talks between town officials, homeowners and the Walgreen Co. last fall failed to yield an agreement to fund a project to remove earth from the top of the landslide and build a buttress at the bottom to hold back the creeping mass of earth.
Meanwhile, the ground continues to move at a rate of about half an inch per month. The estimated cost to permanently stabilize just part of the landslide zone: $8 million to $10 million.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The landslide began when a crack opened up beneath a house on a hillside and a few weeks later split the house in two. Officials worried for a time the hill might collapse altogether.
They ordered the evacuation of 42 homes and apartment units April 9. To date, the ranch-style house atop the slide and town pump house near the Walgreen parking lot below have been the only structures destroyed by the event.

Popular Cliff Collapses in Southern England (Mar 24)
The coastal path has been closed for safety reasons after tonnes of rubble fell amid fears that sightseers were putting their lives at risk by standing near the unstable cliff.
The incident took place on Sunday evening after the top of the cliff collapsed close to the footpath, between Bantham Beach and Thurlestone Golf Course in the South Hams.
Falmouth Coastguard described the landslip as "substantial".
A spokesman said: "A member of the public spotted it from four miles away so you can imagine how big it was."
The police helicopter assisted officers on the ground by guiding them to the scene and ensuring that no-one was on the coastal path at the time of the collapse.
Inspector Adrian Leisk, of Devon and Cornwall Police said: "This is a very popular route for walkers and thankfully no-one was injured as a result of the incident.
"Last night we made the area safe by putting cordons in place. The stretch of coastal path is now closed until longer-term safety measures have been put in place by Highways.
"We are urging people to avoid the area for the time being for their own safety."

Pakistan Landslides Trigger Migration (Apr 1)
Hundreds of kanals of land in Budgam district, 30 km away from Srinagar, is continuously shifting. "Our house was sinking inch by inch. I bundled my family in a vehicle and left the village," said Rehman.
The district administration has fanned out men and machinery to stop the Laden like tragedy that left 16 dead in house collapse incidents. The villagers have been staying awake during nights since the fateful Monday and feeling of sinking land hasn't stopped.
"We have been complaining about drifting land since March this year. We are getting sleepless nights now," said Ramzan Rather, a local.
Budgam superintendent of police (SP) Fayaz Ahmad Lone grappled the developing landslide situation the whole day on Wednesday. "We are on our toes. We are monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps," said SP Lone.
Budgam's four tehsils of Chrar-e-Sharief, Beerwah, Chadoora and Khansahib is in the grip of high risk landslide situation.
Hundreds of families in these tehsils have shifted to safer locations following sinking and caving-in of karewas (terraced high lands with deep gorges and ravines). The district is spread over 1,370 square km with around 7.3 lakh population.
The areas worst affected were Jawalpora, Brinjan, Hapatnaar, Freshnaar - all precariously perched on karewas facing deep slopes. Some houses were damaged in Lolipora and Rawalpora in the district. Three houses had sunk in Khansahib area.
Agriculture minister and local MLA Ghulam Nabi Lone, who paid whirlwind visit to affected families, said, "Instructions have been made that all major roads should stay open."
Major landslides were also reported from south Kashmir's Shopian district where 45 families were evacuated. A chunk of road was swept by mountain debris on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad in north Kashmir's Uri area.

Giant Boulder Closes Roadway In Southern Ohio
LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio -Transportation officials say crews are working to clear a southern Ohio highway after a boulder the size of a two-story house fell onto the road overnight.
Kathleen Fuller with the Ohio Department of Transportation says the rock fell around 2:30 a.m. Friday onto the westbound lane of U.S. 52 near Coal Grove, across the Ohio River from Ashland, Kentucky. The boulder's estimated to be about 1,500 tons.
Officials say the area is susceptible to falling rock, as cliffs border the north side of the highway.
The highway's westbound lanes will remain closed through the weekend. Drivers on Interstate 64 in Huntington, West Virginia are being detoured to US 23.
Officials say no vehicles were struck by the boulder. One pickup truck collided with it, but the driver wasn't seriously hurt.

Crazy landslide in Russia
Footage of the landslide shows the wall of dirt, mud and rock pouring over a highway like a snail-paced avalanche.
Power lines, transmission towers, shrubs and trees are all pushed over and carried toward the road, which is ever-so-slowly buried deep under the debris.

Slide closes Kachemak Drive at Spit end
West end of road will remain closed indefinitely, police say
A collapse of the bluff along the west end of Kachemak Drive has closed the Homer Spit end of the road. The road is closed indefinitely from about a half-mile in from the Homer Spit Road to the top of the hill by the old airport. Kachemak Drive remains open from the other entrance by East End Road all the way to the airport. The Spit Trail parking lot on Kachemak Drie remains open. A section of the Mud Bay hiking trail that goes by the toe of the slide also has been closed. The hole in the road continued to break apart, with cracks spreading along the road. Walkers and bicyclists should use caution when going by the slide.
According to a press release from the Homer Police Department, the road fell apart about 8 a.m. April 19. Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities workers this morning placed barricades at both ends of the closed road and around the broken section of the road.
Wet soils apparently caused the slope below the road to slide into Mud Bay, taking out about a 100-foot section of the east-bound lane. The slide pushed one clump of spruce trees that had been by the edge of the road about 100 yards into Mud Bay. A jumble of thick mud, alder trees and fallen spruce trees laid at the bottom of the slide. Broken slabs of asphalt also littered the slide, and flaps of filter fabric fell over the mud.
This is a developing story with more details to follow.

Landslide along Delaware River forces evacuation of 2 Florence homes
http://www.nj.com/mercer/index.ssf/2015/04/two_florence_homes_deemd...
The news was devastating to residents Chris and Lynne O'Dell, who feared they might have to flee their home after a chunk of the backyard for their East Front Street house fell into the river Sunday and into Monday.
"We need some space and time to get our thoughts together and then we'll move forward," Lynne O'Dell said Wednesday afternoon, about an hour after leaving her home with keepsakes, pictures and other everyday necessities. She and her husband are staying with a relative and unsure about the family's next steps.
"We're just trying to look at this on a day-by-day basis," O'Dell said
The sinkhole-like landslide washed away portions of the backyards of two properties on East Front Street, edging dangerously close to the houses.

Japan now bigger after landslide pushes territory into sea off eastern Hokkaido
http://rt.com/news/253229-landslide-rise-eastern-hokkaido/
The mysterious rise of a landmass from the sea along the coast of Hokkaido, Japan, was caused by a local landslide, an on-site study has found. The mass measures up to 300 meters long, 40 meters wide and rises about 10 meters above sea level.
A local woman who was harvesting seaweed along the shoreline Friday morning noticed the area was more elevated than usual. By the time she finished harvesting, the area had risen further.
The president of the Rausu Fisheries Cooperative Association, Katsuhiro Tanaka, who saw the expanded coastline the day it was discovered, told Asahi Shimbun that "local residents said they didn't hear any sounds and there were no tremors.”
Dutchsinse.com, reporting on earth changes news, weather modification, earthquakes and volcanoes, said on Saturday that "major global earthquake activity is taking place, and serious crustal movement is obviously underway in the region around North Japan."

Landslide in remote Afghan province kills at least 52 people: official
Survivors in tents after a landslide buried Abi-Barik village in Badakhshan, Afghanistan, on May 7
KABUL -- A massive landslide in a remote province in northeastern Afghanistan on Tuesday killed at least 52 people, a provincial official said.
The stricken area in Badakhshan province is cut off from the rest of the country, covered in snow and is only accessible from the air, significantly hampering any rescue efforts, according to Shah Waliullah Adeeb, the provincial governor.
Badakhshan is one of the poorest and least developed regions of Afghanistan, and regularly suffers huge landslides when the snows begin to melt in spring.
Tuesday's landslide struck early in the morning in the province's Khawahan district, near the border with Tajikistan. The isolated area is located about 200 kilometres from the provincial capital, Faizabad, Adeeb said.
There are no roads leading to it and "the only way to reach it is by helicopter," he added. "We won't be able to get there today. We are preparing to go to the area and are waiting for the choppers to take us there."
In early May last year, at least 350 people were buried by a mudslide in the same province. Badakhshan is in the Hindu Kush and Pamir mountain ranges and borders both Tajikistan and at its most eastern point, China.
Unchecked environmental degradation and deforestation across large parts of Afghanistan contribute to a growing problem of landslides when winter snows melt and seasonal rains begin.
The remoteness of Khawahan district is also likely to limit casualties, as villages in the region are small and most people are subsistence farmers.

Deadly landslide hits Salvador in north-east Brazil
At least 14 people were killed in landslides in the city of Salvador in north-east Brazil on Monday.
Heavy rains flooded streets and triggered two separate landslides, sweeping away hillside homes in poor neighbourhoods and injuring 10 people.
Firefighters are still searching for a number of missing.
Meteorologists said the rain was the heaviest in two decades, with more than half of the monthly average falling in the space of only 10 hours.
Seven people died in the neighbourhood of Barro Branco and another seven in Marotinho.
Patients also had to be evacuated from the Santo Antonio hospital in the city after it was flooded.
Landslides are not unusual at this time of year when heavy rains are frequent.
Barro Branco has been hit by landslides before. In 1996, 13 people died and 300 were left homeless.
Almost 1,000 people died in Rio de Janeiro state four years ago when whole hillsides collapsed after heavy rain.

Landslide Closes Trunk Route to Mamuju
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The main trunk route between Mamuju regency to Mamasa regency in West Sulawesi is buried under a landslide, which was triggered by heavy precipitation in the area.
Long queues of vehicles heading to Mamasa was observed in the village of Lakahang in Tabulahan district on Wednesday evening, as a result of the damages to the main trunk route.
Wono, a local, said the landslide happened after heavy rains poured across Mamasa regency since two days prior to the landslide on Wednesday, adding that access to the area was highly problematic, as the trunk road was damaged by boulders and debris from the landslide.
According to Wono, residents have been advised to avoid the area entirely, and traffic to Mamuju city—the provincial capital of West Sulawesi—has been diverted through Polewali Mandar regency.
Authorities have already dispatched heavy machineries and additional personnel to help clear and reopen the affected route.

Bhubaneswar: As many as 320 Odias are trapped in the landslide due to heavy rains on Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway at Chamoli district of Uttrakhand. The stranded persons were on a pilgrimage to Badrinath, one of the four shrines of the annual Char Dham Yatra that began on April 26.
The stranded people are reported to be from Bhadrak, Bolangir Mayurbhanj and Bargarh districts of Odisha.
The State government has taken measures to rescue them.
“We have taken steps to rescue the people stranded in Uttarakhand. Odisha government’s Resident Commissioner posted at New Delhi has been making arrangements to ensure safe return of the people,” said special relief commissioner (SRC) G V V Sharma.
L N Mishra, Collector of Bhadrak in Odisha said at least 54 people from his district were trapped due to the landslide.
“I have spoken to the people standard there. All of them are safe,” Mishra said.
Communication between Joshimath and Govindghat was completely disrupted after the landslide at Vishnuprayag at about 11 AM on Tuesday last.
The road between Joshimath and Govindghat was blocked by big boulders, due to landslides caused by rains yesterday, Chamoli’s Disaster Management official Nand Kishore Joshi said.
Following the incident, almost 3,000 pilgrims have been stranded at Joshimath and Govindghat, he said.
Efforts are on to remove the boulders, Joshi said and hoped that the highway would reopen soon even though continuous falling of rocks is hampering the efforts.

At least four dead, nine missing after landslide on Indonesia's main island, Java
At least four people have been killed and nine others are missing after a landslide buried homes on Indonesia's main island of Java, an official said on Wednesday.
A landslide triggered by a pipeline explosion on Tuesday engulfed eight homes and trapped villagers in a West Java village.
The pipeline, belonging to a geothermal project in the area, had been damaged in a previous landslide caused by days of torrential rain.
"The search for victims of the landslide continues," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency, said.
More than 100 residents, fearing further landslides, had taken refuge in a village hall, he added.
Landslides are common in Indonesia, one of the world's most natural disaster-prone nations.
The national disaster agency estimates around half the country's 250 million population live in areas prone to landslides.

A Strange Underwater Landslide Causes Serious Damage In Norway
This past weekend, a rare underwater landslide in the town of Sørkjosen, Norway, resulted in extensive damage to a wharf, some buildings, and a sea wall. Local authorities have shut down a major road for fear it too could be sucked into the sea, resulting in a 435-mile (700-km) detour.
As reported in the American Geophysical Union’s Landslide Blog, the underwater landslide occurred this past Sunday. Incredibly, no one was killed or injured in an incident that appears to have taken out an area of fill, a large part of a wharf, and some buildings. No residential homes appear to have been damaged, though three people were evacuated.
Above: How the area appeared before the landslide (Bing via AGU). Below: The aftermath.
In addition to the damage at Sørkjosen, the landslide has caused a major headache for travelers. The highway that runs through the town, the E6, has been closed as a precaution. This means the region has essentially been divided into two, resulting in an insane 435-mile (700-km) detour. Normally, a bus trip from Sørkjosen to Tromsø takes about four hours; this week the trip lasts 11 hours. The highway closure also means it’s not possible to drive to and from the Finnmark region without leaving Norway.

A rock slide last night on Highway 537 in the Wanup area south of Sudbury narrowly missed crushing vehicles on Tuesday night.
Giant boulders crashed down on the shoulder of the highway and spilled across both lanes of traffic around 10:40 p.m.
Elle Hoar of Sudbury was driving on Highway 537. She said she slowed down because a pickup truck in front of her had its hazard lights on.
When she looked past the truck, she said she saw the rocks on the road.
Elle Hoar posted this photo on Facebook Tuesday night: "Narrowly escaped a rock slide on my way home tonight. Truck in front of me [not pictured] wasn't so lucky-front end crushed and smeared across the road. Driver is ok." (Elle
"Gigantic truck and shed-sized boulders were there."
Hoar said she knew the boulders had fallen just a few minutes before because dust still lingered in the air.
Some of the rocks had also damaged the pick-up truck that was driving in front of her, Hoar said.
"They definitely fell on the truck. There was a large boulder the size of her truck that had come down on the front of her hood and had taken her across the road and into the other lane," she said.
"It was a really close call. [The driver] was so lucky to be safe and be all in one piece and her truck not to be damaged in the cab and not just on the hood," Hoar said.
Hoar said she stayed until she knew the driver of the pickup was okay, and emergency officials had been contacted, before taking another road to get home.
On mobile? Listen to the interview with Elle Hoar
The rock slide has shaken other residents who live in the area.
Nancy Rose drives past the spot every day and was walking her dog in the area Wednesday morning.
"It could have been anyone of us under those rocks," she said.
Road remains closed
OPP said the highway was closed to traffic in both directions shortly after the rock slide. It remains closed until further notice.
A Ministry of Transportation official at the scene said the cleanup of the debris would likely take 24 to 48 hours.
There is a detour around the area. Drivers can take Old Wanup Road to get to Highway 69 or Estaire Road to Old Wanup Road.
Highway 537 is a two-lane section of provincial road that connects Highway 17 at Wahnapitae to Highway 69 at Wanup.

Homes on sliding river bank in Saskatoon put on evacuation alert
SASKATOON - Six homes on Saskatoon's sliding river bank in the Nutana neighbourhood are under an evacuation alert.
The City of Saskatoon has told residents that the alert will be upgraded to an order if the situation worsens.
Kent Rathwell lives in one of the affected homes and has been given this notice before.
He says it's frustrating because the homeowners can't do much to stabilize their property until the city stabilizes its property on the river valley first.
Even then, he says the cost could end up being more than he and the others paid for their whole properties.

Six homes on Saskatoon's sliding river bank in Nutana are under an evacuation alert.
The City of Saskatoon has told residents that the alert will be upgraded to an order if the situation worsens.
"The city continues to monitor the slope and to keep the group of affected owners informed of the data including any notice or alert," the city said in a statement. The notices were sent to property owners on 11th Street East and Saskatchewan Crescent.
Kent Rathwell lives in one of the affected homes and has been given this notice before.

“It is quite frustrating because we can’t really do much unless they stabilize the city valley for them. Then we can stabilize our property. For us to do that, it is going to be more than what we paid for our whole property,” he said.
Residents have been asking the city to reinforce the lane that runs between 11th Street and Saskatchewan Crescent.
The view of the city owned Cherry Lane between 11th Street East and Saskachewan Crescent on May 13, 2015.
A city-commissioned engineering report by Golder Associates pegged the bill to fix the problem as high as $20 million. That report suggested several years of heavy rain across the city had pushed the water table up, and with it, the layer of clay underneath the affected homes.
While Rathwell remains in limbo, he worries about his neighbours.
“I’m nervous for the retired people in the area that have no other options, a lot of them. I can see their nest eggs disappearing completely,” he said.
This week's letter to affected property owners notes the riverbank has moved 30 and 47 millimetres between Feb. 2 and April 17.

Landslip disrupts traffic on Munnar ghat road
http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/tamil-nadu/landslip-disrupts-...
Vehicular traffic was disrupted on Bodi-Munnar ghat road since Wednesday night owing to a massive landslip on 14{+t}{+h}hairpin bend caused by heavy rainfall on the Western Ghats.
Big boulders and heaps of soil blocked the entire road, leaving a small space for persons to cross on foot.
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation and private bus operators suspended all services to Munnar and other places in Kerala from Bodi, Periyakulam and Madurai since Wednesday night, and private vehicles and trucks were diverted either through Cumbum Mettu or Kumuli ghat road to reach Munnar.
Tourists affected
With commencement of summer season, flow of tourists to Munnar has increased. Closure of the ghat road made it difficult for the tourists, who had to travel an additional 100 to 120 km to reach Munnar.
Estate workers too could not go for work in the morning as jeep operators did not operate their vehicles.
All vehicles were stranded on the ghat road since morning. Later, police stopped the vehicles at Mundhal check-post and diverted them through Cumbum.

At least 40 dead, dozens missing in Colombian landslide
Reuters
Monday, May 18, 2015 2:02:29 EDT PM
BOGOTA - At least 40 people have been killed and dozens are missing after a landslide in northwest Colombia in the early hours of Monday, officials said.
Heavy rains caused a ravine to overflow, sending mud and water onto neighboring homes in Salgar, located in Antioquia department.
"We still do not have an exact figure, I only know that there are more than 40 dead, many families displaced, but I still can't give an exact figure," local official Zulma Osorio told local Caracol Radio.
"The tragedy is of an immense magnitude," she added. "There are many more dead, the whole town is totally collapsed."
Photographs released by the country's air force and television news footage showed destroyed homes and streets covered in mud and debris in the town, which is located in a mountainous area close to the Colombian Andes.
Residents were pictured picking through rubble looking for survivors.
"This was so terrible, we heard rocks hitting, the water dragged us and we had to go to the kitchen and climb up onto the roof," a local man told Caracol.
President Juan Manuel Santos, who is traveling to the town, said via Twitter that Colombia's government will provide aid to the victims.
"We are attending to the emergency in Salgar. Those affected will receive all our support," he said.

Landslides block Kali Gandaki, locals flee for safety
No casualties reported, authorities ask locals to vacate area
MAY 24 - A massive landslide has blocked Kali Gandaki River at Baisari in Bhagwati VDC of Myagdi district early Sunday morning.
The landslip has buried 25 houses in Baisari. No human casualties have been reported yet. Panic-stricken locals in Baisari and areas including district headquarter Beni, Ghatan, Benibazar, Galeshwor, Pokharebagar have started to move to higher grounds after the river was blocked by the landslide at around 1 am this morning.
Normally landslide is triggered by rain but in this case, the cracks triggered by earthquake led the debris to fall, according to experts. Rocks, boulders and mud are falling making huge sound
Ministry of Science and Technology has declared 'high alert' in the settlements along the banks of Kaligandaki River owing to continuous landslides which have blocked the River.
Flood Forecasting division of Department of Hydrology and Meterology under Ministry has appealed to the residents of settlements in the 7 districts below the landslide location the river to stay alert.
"A landslide based dam has been formed at Kaligandaki river approximately 10 km upstream of Beni Bazar. Residents living downstream in Galeshwor Bazaar and Beni Bazaar need to be in high alert," states a warning in the Ministry's website. "Parts of Syangja, Parbat, Myagdi, Baglung, Gulmi, Palpa and Nawalparasi districts in the downstream of this river also need to stay high alert."
Nepal Police, through their twitter account, informed that the water level in the artificial dam created after the blockage of the river has risen by 150 meters.
Myagdi district headquarters, Beni bazaar, is said to be at the biggest risk due to the blockage as construction of gabion walls 3 kms from the confluence of the rivers on both sides has not been completed. The campaign was launched on 1998 and has only completed a gabion walls covering only a kilometre of Myagdi and Kaligandaki rivers.
Locals have already vacated the district headquarter Beni bazaar and move to safer grounds. Transportation along Beni-Jomsom road section has come to a halt.
“We have asked people to remain on high alert and move to safer grounds. Not a drop of water is flowing downstream. We are still gathering the full scale of the damage,” said Myagdi Chief District Officer Tek Bahadur KC.
A chopper with six rescue personnel onboard has flown for Myagdi from the Capital. The team has landed one kilometers upstream and will attempt to drain out the water from the artificial lake, Nepal Police informed. Nepal Army, Nepal Police personnel and officials from the Home Ministry have already reached the incident site.
Meanwhile, Prakriti Raj Joshi, a geologist with Nepal Electricity Authority who returned from the dammed river, said that the water level has been constantly rising as the security personnel have not been able to find an outlet for the accumulated water.
Nawa Raj Sharma, UML lawmaker from Myagdi who is now in Beni, said that the continuous falling of debris is making it difficult for the rescue team to drain out the water. The chopper which flew into the district with rescue team has not been able to locate the exact blockage of water as its view has been blocked by the dust from the falling debris.

Wyoming Landslides Bury Railroad, Close Highway (May 24)
A WYDOT Maintenance worker from Thermopolis narrowly missed being engulfed in a huge landslide on Sunday afternoon.
Glen Thomas was operating a loader trying to clear one of the landslides when another began roaring down the side of the canyon. He was trapped.
“I was pinned in from behind when I looked up and saw another one coming right at me,” Thomas said Monday afternoon inside the canyon. “A rock the size of a boulder came rolling down and flared out the guardrail. I tried to back out of it but I was pinched between two slides. I turned the loader off, left it in the middle of the road, and got out of there as fast as I could heading north on foot. I don’t want to ever experience that again.”
Thomas said a Hot Springs County Sheriff Deputy was dispatched to pick him up, and found him about three miles from the slide site walking down the road.
“Walking through the canyon in all that rain with rocks coming down all around me was pretty scary,” he said. “I don’t want to experience that again.” He said it was about 4 p.m. when the big slide came down.
The huge slide was actually a number of large slides that came down in the same vicinity. On Monday afternoon, rocks and water were still coming down and crossing the highway and portions of the highway were severely undercut.
A Thermopolis resident caught on the south side of the canyon was 88-year-old Mary King.
“I moved to Thermopolis when I was four years old and I have never seen anything like this before,” she said of the numerous huge waterfalls and landslides on both sides of the canyon.
In addition to the closed highway, the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railway line through the west side of the canyon was buried in a half dozen locations, including one slide that ripped the rails from the railbed and into the Wind River, narrowly missing a number of empty train cars on a siding.

(Via Firefighters Department)
Transit on Route 27, the main highway connecting San José with the Pacific province of Puntarenas, has been completely shut down by landslides that blocked both lanes of the road.
Heavy rains on Wednesday afternoon are to blame for the massive amount of earth that dropped on kilometer 45 of the Caldera Highway at about 3 p.m. There have been no reports of injuries.
Traffic Police closed access to the highway at the toll station at Atenas and at the intersection to Orotina.
The most severe traffic congestion is now affecting travelers in the San José-Caldera lane, Traffic Police reported at 5 p.m.

Landslide-hit Newquay beach closed after further cracks found
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-33045491
In February, about 100 tonnes of debris fell on to the access road at Great Western Beach in Newquay.
Engineers believe there is a risk of further rock falls and Cornwall Council has closed the road at both ends - the only public access to the beach.
Cornwall councillor Geoff Brown said it was "very disappointing".
'Worst possible news'
The cracks have opened up both in the access road and on the cliff above the beach complex.
Beach huts have been evacuated and the surf school is thought to have relocated.
Mr Brown said: "It's the worst possible news we could have had, but public safety comes first."

The 30-strong group of Limehills School teachers, parents and students arrived at Deep Cove camp on Monday for a week-long trip.
But a landslide triggered by heavy rain down south was discovered around 8am on Tuesday, blocking the road needed for the group's exit.
However, the students should still be able to return home on schedule.
Real Journeys Te Anau, which is in charge of transporting the school group to and from the camp, said the slip should be cleared by Friday, when the students were due to leave.
"Contractors are in there fixing the road and at this stage they are saying they should have it open for Friday so we're confident as we can be that the school group will come out on Friday as per their normal schedule," spokesman Paul Morris said.

"We have found the bodies of 15 people, and around 15 others have been reported missing. They were said to be inside the destroyed houses," said Bhattarai, the assistant district chief.
"Ten people suffered injuries and police are on the ground helping the wounded," he told AFP.
