Landslides

"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.

"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

Heavy rains have killed at least five people in Guatemala, where authorities on Monday urged residents to take precautions because showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue this week.

National Office for Disaster Reduction director Alejandro Maldonado said a landslide set off by rain killed five members of a family over the weekend in the province of Huehuetenango.

He said the family's neighbors and rescue crews saved the family's dog after the animal was partially buried for more than 18 hours.

Several rivers have burst their banks and the drainage systems in at least four western provinces have collapsed. So far, authorities haven't reported any major flooding, Maldonado said.

The Education Department suspended classes in nine provinces for two days because of the rain coming from a weather system that became a tropical depression Monday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the system centered about 210 miles (340 kilometers) south-southeast of the coastal city of Salina Cruz, Mexico, was likely to become a tropical storm between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Mexican state of Chiapas, which neighbors Guatemala, had seen light to moderate rains for 24 hours and some landslides were cleared from roads in the state's mountainous areas, state Civil Protection spokesman Jose Aragon said. He said authorities would begin evacuating people Monday evening from coastal and low-lying areas next to rivers that are prone to flooding.

Over 119,000 people affected by floods and landslides in Sri Lanka

    http://www.colombopage.com/archive_14A/Jun06_1402064389CH.php

June 06, Colombo: More than 119,000 people have been affected by floods and landslides in Sri Lanka, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said on Friday.

At least 23 people have been killed so far and one more is missing after torrential rains lashed the island for five days causing floods and landslides, mostly in Western and Southern Provinces.

According to the DMC, 119,546 people belong to 29,209 families have been affected while 18,285 people from 4,493 families have been housed in shelters.

The government has deployed security forces and relief workers to distribute food parcels and clear the affected areas.

The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) in coordination with district authorities is assessing the early recovery needs of the people affected by floods in several districts.

The SLRCS has identified providing access to safe drinking water, cleaning public places and ensuring living conditions are brought back to normalcy as most important areas to focus on.

SLRCS Branches in the affected areas are mobilizing volunteers to do the needful, the SLRCS said.

Kalutara, Galle, Ratnapura, Gampaha, Kegalle, Colombo, Matara, Kurunegala and Nuwara-Eliya are the districts affected.

The Red Cross has expressed concern with regard to the possible rise of vector-borne and diarrheal disease soon after a flood situation.

The DMC expects the flood situation to get worse closer to the southern coastal areas as the rivers, which flow into the sea from these areas are rising.

Texas cliffhanger: Luxury home left dangling after landslide

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/texas-cliffhanger-luxury-...

A luxury $800,000 (U.S.) Texas home perched on a lakeside bluff was poised to plunge into the water below on Wednesday after the ground under its foundation eroded and left it precariously balanced on a decaying cliff.

The house on Lake Whitney, about 120 kilometers southwest of Dallas, is perched about 23 meters in the air and being circled by a local TV news helicopter waiting to record its plunge into the water below.

A massive piece of land under the house fell into the lake on Tuesday night, neighbors told local media. Video footage shows about half of the house on the ground and half in the air, with a dangling air conditioning unit tethered to the structure.

The land started to give way in February, and since then about 50 meters of territory that separated it from the water’s edge has eroded, said Mark Wilson, the chief deputy for the Hill County Sheriff’s Department.

The owners, who use it as a second home, have abandoned the property while people are being kept away from it on land and in the lake below.

“When they built the house, it looked like a safe area, away from the bluff. There is just a lot of the bluff that gave way,” Wilson said.

Extreme floods cause landslide in Brazilian city Natal days before World Cup game

WHILE the USA battled it out with Ghana in their World Cup match in the Brazilian city of Natal, just across the city landslides have destroyed roads and homes.

Two days of near non-stop rain have dumped a month’s worth of precipitation on Natal.

At least 25 homes are reported to be destroyed after flash flooding. The downpour, which began in the north-eastern Brazilian city early Friday, and abated only on Sunday, dumped as much rain in 50 hours as is usually seen during the entire month of June. There are no injuries confirmed.

Incredible drone footage has captured the extent of the devastation.

    Landslide in Natal, Brazil

Natal’s City Hall declared a flood alert on Saturday, and evacuated dozens of residents as a precaution in the Mae Luiza neighbourhood in the city’s west. News reports showed images of residents wading through knee-deep waters as others pushed cars submerged up to the door handles. Additional reports showed a huge crater cutting across a street in a residential neighbourhood.

Floods can often be deadly in Brazil, where intense rains, chaotic urban planning and garbage-filled drainage pipes sometimes result in landslides that bury entire neighbourhoods.

Poor neighbourhoods, often built up steep hillsides, tend to be hit worst by such flooding.

The southern Brazilian regions of Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul have also been hit by recent floods.

Avalanche hits Mt Cook hut- NEW ZEALAND

    Last updated 14:25 16/07/2014

AVALANCHE TRAIL: The Gardiner Hut has nearly disappeared under the debris.

DAMAGED: Gardiner Hut on Mt Cook was hit by an avalance.

A large and "very rare" avalanche has engulfed a climber's hut on Mount Cook Aoraki.

New Zealand Alpine Club general manager Sam Newton said it appeared that no one was injured in the large rockfall, which may have happened at night.

"The rockfall covers a very, very big area,'' he said. "Rockfalls like this are very rare and hardly ever approach this size. This one is big.''

The rockfall happened on the South Ridge, or Hillary Ridge, of the mountain and swept down Noeline Glacier and over Pudding Rock, where the Gardiner Hut sits. It was reported by a pilot yesterday.

Photographs show the tin hut, which can sleep about eight people, engulfed in small rocks and moved off its foundations.

ockfall is the third to strike the area in the last 18 months.

There was one on the other side of South Ridge near Ball Pass and another near Mount Haast.

DOC said there were no records of visitors to the area at the time of the avalanche and aerial investigations did not indicate anyone had been caught in the incident.

The hut was in a remote spot, used only by experienced alpine climbers.

DOC services manager Mike Davies said following a helicopter inspection it was working with GNS Science to assess the stability of the area before a more detailed investigation of damage.

Until then, people were asked to keep out of the Noeline Glacier region of the upper Hooker valley.

    The Hooker Track is unaffected.

Landslides Hit Southern China, 45 Dead (Jul 17)

Landslides over the past week have killed at least 45 people in southern China and left 21 others missing, the country's Ministry of Civil Affairs and an official said Thursday.

In Sichuan province, a landslide caused dirt and stone to hit a truck and four cars on a highway on Thursday afternoon, killing 11 people and injuring a further 19, according to an official in the province's Maoxian county.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs said in a statement that heavy rains and associated floods and landslides over the past week had killed 34 people and left 21 others missing in seven southern provinces. The bulk of these deaths and missing persons were in Guizhou and Hunan provinces.

The ministry said nearly 9,300 houses had collapsed in the rains, and a further 63,000 houses had been damaged. The rains had also affected 384,000 hectares of crops and caused direct economic losses of 5.2 billion yuan ($840 million), it said.

Chinese state television showed flooding threatening the picturesque tourist town of Fenghuang in Hunan province, with a historic arched bridge barely emerging from floodwaters.

Shocking footage shows the dramatic moment THREE ski slopes collapse at £19m holiday resort in Turkey

    By TRAVELMAIL REPORTER

Dramatic footage has been released showing the moment three ski jumps collapsed at a supposedly state-of-the-art holiday resort in Turkey.

The video shows dust billowing up as the structure gives way at the £19 million Palandöken ski resort, which was built in the city of Erzurum for the 2011 Winter Universiade.

Investigators who attended the site blamed errors made during the construction work, after finding evidence of negligence and basic engineering faults.

Aftermath: The multi-million pound ski resort was left in ruins after the collapse

Aftermath: The multi-million pound ski resort was left in ruins after the collapse

The facility, which is the country's first and only ski jump, is located at the base of the Palandöken Mountain and had been promoted as a centre to help train a new generation of Turkish winter sports stars.

But three of the five towers at the facility gave way dramatically after developing large cracks in their walls. They ranged from 20 to 60 metres tall.

The other two towers, which measure 95 and 125 metres, also developed cracks making them completely unusable.

Heavy rain in the region appears to have accelerated the collapse of the slopes.

The site also includes a hotel and a cafe, which is located at the top of the 125-metre tower and receives around 200 tourists per day.

The complex was built by Turkish construction firm Saridaglar Insaat as part of a multi-million pound high-profile PR exercise, and had been inaugurated in 2011 by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

It was Turkey's first ski jump tower facility and it was hoped that it would one day help to bring the Winter Olympics to the country.

Turkey's national team were also using the centre to prepare for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in China's PyeongChang.

Luckily, no-one was hurt as staff at the complex had alerted authorities about the cracks in the towers a few weeks before their collapse.

An evacuation took place and the Turkish national team ski jump team were sent home while checks were carried out.

Erol Mehmet Yarar, head of the Turkish Skiing Federation, said: 'Initial findings are that the builders used only a single metre of steel piles (which provide the foundation) in the towers' foundation which was a major mistake, as a 50 metre long steel pile was pre-specified in the architect's plans.

'International standards require at least 25 metre deep piles for the towers of the size of those that collapsed.

'Given that the whole complex was built in an area prone to earthquakes makes this oversight a major error.'

The full report is expected in two months after which Erzurum Public Prosecutor's Office will make a decision on whether to bring about any charges.

Saridaglar Insaat had also built several other sporting venues across the country, along with an airport in the eastern province of Bingol.

The company refused to comment, saying that the investigation was still ongoing.

Landslide in southwest Colombia traps 17 miners

Tons of rock and clay have fallen on top of an open pit gold mine in Colombia’s southwestern state of Cauca, trapping 17 miners and injuring another nine, local media reported on Wednesday.

Initial reports detail that as hundreds of people were finishing their shift, tons of rock and clay fell on top of them, trapping 17, according to Colombia’s El Tiempo newspaper.

The mining tragedy took place in the town of Timbiqui, Cauca on Colombia’s Pacific coast; however, rescue efforts have been complicated because access to the mine takes 45 minutes by river.

“This is very serious. The people who could save themselves are just arriving at the hospital. The seriously injured are nine, and among them is the owner of the informal mine,” said Víctor Amu Sinisterra, mayor of Timbiqui, in an interview with El Tiempo.

The tragedy currently unfolding is similar to one that happened in Cauca in May.

“There is an immense amount of distress in the community from seeing so many people disappear in one moment. Relief is on its way to the area, and we hope that at a departamental level, help is given to help us overcome this emergency. We ask for a lot of support to address the situation, since we haven’t been able to control it,” said Sinisterra.

Massive Landslide at Iceland Volcano Batters Shoreline With 50-Meter Waves (Jul 21)

    video

A roughly one-kilometer (0.6-mile) wide piece of land fell from a mountain near Askja stratovolcano last night. Several 50-meter (164-feet) flood waves crashed on the rocks around the lake in Askja during the night. According to estimates, 50 to 60 million cubic meters (1,766-2,118 cubic feet) of land fell down the mountain.

Researcher Ármann Höskuldsson was in the area with a group of students when the incident occurred and says it was lucky that the incident occurred around midnight when no one was down by the lake.

“There was a massive landslide with part of it falling into the water which created a tidal wave ... The waves were around 50 meters high and were hitting up against the walls of the northern side of the lake,” he told ruv.is.

The waves have resulted in significant erosion.

India Landslide Sweeps Away Scores Of Homes; More Than 150 May Be Trapped - July 30, 2014

    http://www.swadeshnews.com/national/pune-village-devastated-by-mass...

    Posted: 07/30/2014 4:34 am EDT

NEW DELHI (AP) — Torrential rains triggered a massive landslide that buried a remote village in western India on Wednesday, killing at least 17 people as it swept away scores of houses and possibly trapping many more people under debris, officials said.

National rescue personnel reached the area before nightfall. But continuing rains and bad roads were hampering rescue efforts and preventing reinforcements from reaching Ambegaon, a village in Pune district in Maharashtra state, said Alok Avasthy, a National Disaster Response Force commander.

Rescuers planned to work overnight using floodlights mounted on two jeeps being sent from Pune along with earthmoving vehicles, according to Suresh Jadhav, a district official.

He said 17 bodies had been recovered from under mud, rocks, trees and other debris. "Everything on the mountain came down," he said.

But with 70 homes buried and reports of another 158 hit by the landslide, rescuers anticipated more dead in the village, home to 704 people in the foothills of the Sahyadri Mountains.

The landslide hit early Wednesday morning, but details of the damage only began to trickle out several hours later. The area received 10.8 centimeters (4.25 inches) of rain on Tuesday, with a heavy downpour continuing through Wednesday.

A lack of Internet connectivity and poor cellphone service were also hampering the rescue operation.

"It's surrounded by hills and the area is very remote and rural, so it's taking us time to get there," Avasthy said.

Some 250 disaster response personnel were in the area assisting local police and medical teams who began clearing the debris. At least 100 ambulances were also sent to the area, Jadhav said.

"It is a small village and this happened very suddenly," local legislator Dilip Walse Patil told CNN-IBN TV network. Earlier Wednesday, one local commissioner, Prabhakar Deshmukh, said more than 150 people could be trapped.

Landslides are common in the area during the monsoon season, which runs from June through September.

Pune district is about 150 kilometers (95 miles) southeast of Mumbai, India's commercial capital. The nearest medical center is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the village.

The area around the village has been deforested extensively, increasing its vulnerability to landslides.

Similar deforestation and environmental damage have caused floods and landslides in other parts of India as well.

Last year, more than 6,000 people were killed as floods and landslides swept through the hilly northern state of Uttarakhand during the monsoon season.

More on today's landslide in Nepal:

There is little chance of finding any of the more than 150 people who are believed to have been buried by a massive landslide in northern Nepal, an official said Sunday, as rescuers struggled to dig through piles of rock, mud and trees.

The huge hillside suddenly collapsed at 2am, burying two dozen homes before dumping mud and stones and blocking the Sunkoshi river at Mankha village, 75 km northeast of the capital Kathmandu.

Landslides Hit Northern Ireland (Aug 2)

A series of landslides occurred Saturday in County Antrim as large volumes of mud and peat swept down a hillside in the Orra Mountain area.

The Altarichard Road between Cushendall and Magherahoney was closed as tonnes of mud and rocks poured down the hill.

    Dermot McAleese filmed the landslide.

"We watched it for a couple of hours. I've never seen anything like this before and my father has farmed up there for 70 years and he's never experienced anything like this in his life," McAleese said.

Meanwhile, four guests at bed and breakfast accommodation in Glenariff had to be escorted off the premises by firefighters when a landslide dumped several hundred tonnes of rock and mud near the property.

Owner James McHenry, who has lived in the area for 60 years, said he had "never seen anything like it".

"Within 20 minutes there came this massive rush of rock, from small stones right up to great big, large stones weighing half a tonne and more," he said.

"They just came right down the mountainside via the stream and deposited itself in our yard.

"At one stage, I thought the house was going to come down, the mud and the debris was piled right up against our back door."

He said the house was flooded and the B&B had to close.

"Water came in the bank and went through to the front. Thankfully it was only water and not the boulders and mud."

Damage was also caused to part of the Slieveanorra mountain near Armoy in County Antrim when land gave way.

A landslide also closed the coast road between Carnlough and Waterfoot.

According to figures from the Met Office, 49.8mm of rain fell at Ballypatrick Forest Park near Ballycastle.

The Met Office also said 41.8mm of rain was recorded at Altnahinch Filters near Dunloy, and 32.4mm was registered in Killylane near Armoy.

"That amount of rain is not unusual for the likes of Ballypatrick," said a spokesperson for the Met Office.

Landslide Swallows Car Park in Japan (Aug 5)

Two cars were left teetering on the edge of a cliff after a landslide at a car park in Tokushima.

A bus containing terrified passengers remained trapped halfway down a mountainside after this gigantic landslide.

Amazingly, none of the passengers were killed as half a car park in Tokushima, Japan, was swallowed up.

Around 500,000 people had to evacuate areas of the country yesterday as violent storms raged.

North Salt Lake Residents Evacuated After Landslide Destroys Home, Threatens Others
(KUTV) 27 homes have evacuated after a landslide destroyed a home in North Salt Lake Tuesday morning.

Officials are concerned the slide is threatening additional homes in the area. Four homes are said to be in immediate danger, but 27 homes have been evacuated as a precaution according to South Davis Metro Fire. Residents have been asked to grab essential items from their homes and leave to a safe area while crews continue assess the situation. The residents of the homes not in immediate danger may be able to return home, but officials are waiting for a storm to pass through before making any decisions. Any residents in need of assistance are being asked to head to 351 E. Lofty Lane where crews will have supplies available.

Crews are working to help minimize potential damage to the area. Waterlines have been shut off and pools along the landslide area have been drained to prevent a potential tidal wave effect. South Davis Metro Fire says they used equipment to build a berm in preparation for heavy rainfall, hoping to channel the water away from the landslide area. Additional soil was also moved around to relieve pressure.

The incident started about a week and a half ago on the hill above the Eagle Ridge Tennis and Swim Club on Parkway Dr. Neighbors say they noticed the earth begin to move when a developer began prepping several lots at the top of the hill.

Officials say the approval to build in the area of the landslide was given seven to nine years ago. The North Salt Lake city manager says there are plans to meet with the developer, Sky Properties, within the next 48 hours.

City council will be meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the possibility of passing a state of emergency for the area.

2News' has a team on the scene and will have additional details as they become available.

Rare Landslide Derails Passenger Train in Switzerland; 11 People Injured (Aug 13)

Three train cars derailed and 11 people were injured Wednesday after a landslide hit a mountain train in the Swiss Alps, police said. One carriage slid down a steep slope, saved from a ravine only by large trees.

The accident occurred in a deep wooded valley between Tiefencastel and Solis, southeast of Zurich. Police said about 140 people were on board.

Five people were seriously injured and another six sustained slight injuries, Graubuenden police spokeswoman Anita Senti said. They included eight Swiss, two Japanese citizens and one Australian, police said.

The train had set off from the ski resort of St. Moritz heading north toward Chur, Graubuenden’s administrative capital.

Police initially said the train ran into a landslide on the track, but later revised their comments to say a landslide hit the train as it travelled between two tunnels along the side of a valley. One train car slid about 10 metres (33 feet) down the slope before being stopped by the trees.

Air rescue helicopters helped with the recovery effort since the crash site was not near a road. By mid-afternoon, everyone had been evacuated, with uninjured passengers taken to Tiefencastel and put on buses.

The train is operated by Rhaetische Bahn, which runs narrow-gauge routes in Switzerland’s mountainous southeastern corner that are popular with tourists. The line is expected to remain closed for two days.

Switzerland’s rail system is considered among the safest and most efficient in the world, despite the country’s challenging terrain.

Nepal landslide and flood: 34 killed, scores injured

    nepal flood

Kathmandu, Aug 15: At least 34 people have been killed and hundreds of others gone missing in Nepal as heavy downpour continued for over three days across the country, triggering landslides and flood in rivers.

At least 11 people have died in Surkhet district, nine in Gorkha, Chitwan, Rukum districts, eight in Lalitpur, Udayapur, Dang and Manang districts, and six in Nawalparasi, Khotang, Sindhuli, Dhanusha, Makawnapur, Dhanusha districts, according to various media reports here.

Thousands of people have been displaced and huge chunks of arable land across the country covered by flood and debris. Hilly areas have witnessed landslips while plains are inundated.

Life in the plains has gone out of gear. Many people have started fleeing to safer places and sought immediate government help.

The mayhem has continued to take a toll on public life and property as well.

Thousands of people have been rendered homeless and several parts of the country are now disconnected as landslides have damaged highways.

Water-level in major rivers has risen above danger mark, causing fear of more floods in a large swathe of land in southern plains adjoining neighbouring India.

Landslide and floods have blocked highways, leaving passengers stranded, and damaged properties worth billion of rupees across the country.

On Aug 2, a landslide in Sunkoshi river that blocked entire movement of the river left over 150 killed.

Admitting the government’s failure to launch rescue and search operation on time, Nepal’s Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam told parliament Friday that helicopter could not be dispatched for rescue due to bad weather. It is yet to be concluded how much damage has been done by landslide and flood, he added.

“Dozens of villages are waterlogged in southern plains and in some districts entire villages are inundated, displacing thousands of people,” the minister said.

Incessant downpour has made rescue operation difficult and ineffective. Water-level in major rivers has risen above the danger-level and bridges on these rivers have become dangerous, the minister said.

All security agencies have been put on round-the-clock alert, he said, adding that an Indian security post located on the Nepal-India border was rescued from flood in Rapti river by Nepali security personnel.

Ecuador earthquake triggers huge landslide at quarry after hillside collapses on workers killing two and injuring eight
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2724623/Ecuador-earthquake-...

With dust billowing into the sky, this is the moment a hillside crumbled to the ground at a busy construction site in Ecuador killing two workers and injuring eight more.

The hillside collapsed after an earthquake triggered a landslide at a quarry site in Ecuador, seven miles north of the capital of Quito.

It killed two employees of a Chinese contractor that works for the city. Eight more were injured.

A further three people are still missing from the quarry after the landslide in the Catequilla area of the country, near the Equator.

Parts of Quito were covered in clouds of dust that formed from moving earth at the nearby quarry, and the capital's Tababela airport was temporarily suspended.

Another landslide engulfed a vehicle on a road north of the city, but the driver escaped unharmed, rescue workers said.

Major Landslides Bury Children Alive in Hiroshima Japan (Aug 20)

Rescue efforts sprang into high gear in Hiroshima, Japan, early Wednesday morning after a series of landslides buried people in their homes as they slept. At least three people have already been confirmed dead.

The landslides happened in the city's Asaminami and Asakita wards between 3:20 and 4 a.m. local time Wednesday. A 77-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy have died, and as many as 21 people are missing, public broadcaster NHK reports. The identity of the third victim was not yet released.

The broadcast organization also pinpointed at least 20 locations in Hiroshima city where people were stranded or trapped.

At least 3 landslides struck the city, burying at least 12 people alive, according to Fuji TV. The Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan's leading newspapers, says an 11-year-old boy and a 2-year-old boy were in their home when the mud slammed into it. The younger child was pulled from the muck but was in cardiac arrest. Rescuers were attempting to reach the 11-year-old and nine other people.

Several of the city's hilly northern neighborhoods have been evacuated, according to the website of Hiroshima's city government. Schools were opened as shelters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded 3.92 inches of rain in one hour in Asakita Ward, by far the largest 1-hour rainfall amount since records began for that location in 1976. Over 9 inches of rain have fallen there in the past 24 hours, also an all-time record for the site.

Nepal: Thousands displaced by floods and landslides - August 19

    http://www.ifrc.org/en/news-and-media/news-stories/asia-pacific/nep...

Heavy monsoon rains in Nepal have caused extensive flooding and several landslides throughout the country. More than 225,000 people are affected and 35,000 have been forced to leave their homes. To date, 70 people are confirmed dead and 181 are still missing. The number of casualties is expected to rise. 75 per cent of the displaced population are from the districts of Surkhet, Bardiya and Kailali in the western part of the country.

Roads and bridges have been damaged or destroyed and livestock and crops have been washed away. Over 4,600 houses have been damaged and more than 10,000 partially destroyed. Due to fallen electrical and telecommunication poles, the communication network and electricity supply are greatly restricted and drinking water supply system in the Surkhet valley was also disrupted.

In response, branches of Nepal Red Cross Society have mobilised more than 200 trained volunteers and staff to conduct rapid assessments, assist in search and rescue operations and provide relief services and first aid to affected people. Relief efforts to many scattered and remote areas are seriously hampered due to the continuous rain and impassable roads. Adding to the gravity of the situation is the lack of temporary evacuation centres. Some families are forced to live in the open.

Large mudslide partially blocks Sarapiquí River in Alajuela

Officials at the National Emergency Commission (CNE) confirmed that a mudslide Thursday night partially has blocked the Sarapiquí River in north-central Costa Rica.

Red Cross spokesman Alexander Porras said Friday that some 150 cubic meters of mud and debris currently are blocking a large part of the river flow, in an unpopulated area of Nueva Cinchona, north of Alajuela.

Local residents said they heard loud noises coming from the mountains along the river around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. Those reports were followed by several more reports of a severe decrease in the river flow and of muddy water coming out from the local aqueduct, according to the Red Cross and CNE.

CNE geologists on Friday conducted an on-the-ground inspection and confirmed the largest accumulation of debris is located some 20 kilometers from the nearest community, at La Virgen de Sarapiquí, and that it currently does not pose any immediate threat for its residents.

Residents at various north central communities reported loud noises coming from the mountains.

    (Courtesy of Red Cross)

The large accumulation of water and debris however worries CNE experts who are evaluating the possibility of more mudslides or flash floods occurring at the site.

They however already ruled out that the mudslide may affect the bridge at La Paz Waterfall. Last year a strong river surge washed away the old Bailey bridge.

Geologists will continue assessing the situation. They’ll take a closer look at public infrastructures located in the area including a bridge in Santiaguito and various facilities belonging to the Costa Rica Electricity Institute in Cariblanco.

CNE recommends residents and visitors to remain on alert and avoid recreational activities along the Sarapiqui River unitl all evaluations at the site are completed. The area is a popular destination for tourists who enjoy rafting, fishing and other outdoor activities.

Wash. flash flooding damages estimated 10 home

TWISP, Wash. (AP) — Heavy rains that unleashed mud slides in an area of north-central Washington where hillsides have been left barren by wildfires damaged or destroyed an estimated 10 homes and blocked highways, officials said Friday.

14 photos Photo - This image made from a video provided by KOMO News shows a car in north central Washington after rain created mudslides on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014. Damage to homes included mud, rushing water and the powerful force of the two together.

Resident Janie Lewis tells The Seattle Times (http://is.gd/a6zLO8) that a cascade of mud and water blew open her door Thursday evening, knocking down her husband and depositing several feet of mud in their house. They were unhurt.

"The river was running through the house," she said. "We're lucky to be alive."

More than 40 friends showed up unannounced Friday to help them dig out, she said.

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said he believes a couple of the 10 homes were destroyed, a few were knocked off their foundations, many suffered mud damage.

"Still no injuries," he said Friday night. "No deaths. No missing people."

A section of State Highway 153 through the hard-hit Methow Valley remained closed Friday.

Chunks of highways were eaten away by the deluge.

There were at least two slides on State Highway 20 in a 30-mile stretch from Twisp to Okanogan, Transportation Department spokesman Jeff Adamson said. That stretch of road was closed until Friday afternoon.

More thunderstorms had been forecast for Friday and the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch but it was allowed to expire Friday evening.

"There were a few light showers in wildfire areas but nothing like the thunderstorms that came through yesterday," meteorologist Matthew Fugazzi said Friday night.

The multiple slides had marooned as many as a dozen vehicles but occupants of those cars were rescued, the Washington State Patrol said.

The slides and flooding hit hard in areas burned by this summer's Carlton Complex wildfires. The fires burned more than 400 square miles and 500 firefighters remain in the area mopping up.

"This flooding is in the areas that were burned," Adamson said. "It brings down rocks, mud and water."

Residents said they were feeling disheartened.

"It's like another nail in the coffin," Carlton General Store owner Jeff Lyman told the newspaper. "It's pretty bad down here right now."

Maggie Garrett, who lives on Benson Creek, described fences torn down and deep channels carved through driveways and backyards.

"It was literally like a river running through here," she said. "And now, everything's 6 inches under mud."

Another Massive Landslide in Dariali Gorge (Aug 20)

A landslide hit Dariali Gorge, close to the Russian border, late on August 20 for the second time in three months.

Two workers employed on construction of a hydro power plant are missing. The landslide severed the road linking Georgia with Russia, as well as the pipeline through which Russia supplies gas to Armenia via Georgia.

The Kazbegi-Zemo Larsi border crossing point with Russia has been flooded and its infrastructure damaged.

Earlier in May, a very large landslide occurred at Devdoraki in Georgia, blocking the strategically-important Dariali Gorge.

The latest landslide, which originated at the glacier, is reported to be even larger.

The landslide, and the resulting damage, are sufficiently serious to have needed a visit to the site by the President of Georgia.
