Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm.
The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated" with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. "
It has been confirmed with air traffic control that there are no incidents of aircraftin difficult and nothing registered on radar," she said. "
The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only." Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a "flare or a bright object with a tail" were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a "large ball of fire in the sky" across Annandale and Eskdale.
One user wrote on the force's Facebook page: "It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!" Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. The Observatory posted on Twitter: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I have ever seen period."

Stargazers looking for Aurora Australis mystified by bright green flash
By Charley Rico

Key points:
* Residents in Tasmania's south saw a bright green flash in the starry sky
* Social media users suggested it was a meteor, glowing green because of the metals inside the rock
* An expert says it could also be space debris, but added it was a "spectacular" sight
They were waiting for the Aurora Australis, but amateur photographers were left guessing after seeing a bright green flash light up the Tasmanian sky.
Amateur photographer Leoni Williams captured a shot of the green streak about 9:30pm on Thursday by "accident".
Overlooking Pipe Clay Lagoon, toward Clifton Beach in southern Tasmania, Ms Williams had her camera facing south in anticipation of an Aurora.
"I was very lucky to capture this bright green object before it disappeared over the horizon," Ms Williams said.
"I'm still not sure what it was. I didn't actually see it with the naked eye as I wasn't watching. I had just set the camera on 30 seconds and pushed the shutter and turned back to my phone.
"I would imagine it was pretty quick. I nearly missed it because it was at the end of the exposure."
Photo sparked social media debate
Ms Williams took to social media to try and find out what she'd captured on camera.
Opinions varied, with some thinking it was a shooting star, a fallen satellite or even a UFO.
Spotted from the Huon Valley to Dodges Ferry, other photos began popping up on social media.
Eventually, it was shared on social media page Australian Meteor Reports.
"It's definitely a meteor," page administrator David Finlay said.
"That flash that's been captured is a very, very bright meteor — it's what we'd call a 'fireball'. It probably lit up the countryside."
Mr Finlay — a former industrial chemist who has been studying astronomy from an very early age — said the flash was created by a "small rock from space, blazing through the atmosphere, creating friction with the atmosphere".
"It glows and ionises gas — that's what you see as this fireball blazing through the sky.
"If it actually survives atmospheric entry and lands as a rock on land, that's what we call a meteorite — only if it makes it to the ground."
Why is it green?
As for the bright green glow, Mr Finlay said it had to do with the elemental components of the meteor.
"The green is produced by a combination of the nickel and iron in the meteor," he said.
"It's probably just a normal rocky meteor but it would contain flecks of metal in the rock, producing that colour. It's very cool.
"It's what we colloquially call a 'fish squisher' because it's over the ocean," he said.
Professor Simon Ellingsen, the head of physics at the University of Tasmania, said it was possible the object was manmade space debris rather than a meteor.
"[The colour] is almost certainly because of the specific elements and minerals in the object," he said.
"It probably wouldn't have looked that green to the naked eye [because] digital cameras are so good at picking up the light."
He said while it wasn't unusual to spot a meteor or space debris over Tasmania, this object would have been a special sight to see.
"The sort of rule of thumb is if you go outside to a clear, dark sight, you'll see a shooting star, so to speak, about every 10 minutes or so," he said.
"This one that's been caught is bigger than normal and more spectacular than you normally get.
"This photographer was obviously in the right place at the right time."

Bright fireball that flared up in the night sky surprising northern Florida turns out to be a meteor
Just before midnight on Saturday night, people in northern Florida were treated to a surprising bright light in the sky that turned out to be a meteor.
'Did you see it? A meteor was caught on GOES Lightning Mapper (GLM) around 3:52Z or 11:52 PM ET!' confirmed the National Weather Service out of Tallahassee on Twitter.
The meteor's flash was captured on the Geostationary Lightning Mapper, a satellite taking hundreds of images per second to map lightning storms, according to CNN.
'Meteors coming into the Earth's atmosphere happen fairly often but we don't always get to see them,' said CNN meteorologist Haley Brink.
'Nowadays we have so many satellites in space and cameras on the ground that these events are becoming more and more visible to the general public.'
Social media users in Florida captured the flare-up late Saturday night with various posts that registered their surprise.
'This isn't normally what I post on my channel, but tonight I was out on my way home, and I saw something pretty crazy,' said a user who runs EVE Pro Guides - EVE Online PVP and ISK Guides YouTube channel. 'Luckily my dashcam caught it, so I'll let you watch right here.'
Eve Pro Guides user took the time to do a slow motion portion of the meteor's fall as well as provide some closeups
At about 19 seconds into the video posted on the video game guide channel, a glowing blue-ish orb enters the frame the top of the screen. It then flares even more brightly before disappearing over the horizon.
The video then repeats in slow motion and even provides a closeup of the meteor
Twitter user Jeffrey Cardona who captured the glowing space rock on his dash cam captioned his video 'Can Somebody Explain This!' while tagging numerous news organizations and hashtags referring to meteors, UFO's and Area 51.
Cardona exclaims 'dude, did you see that!' from inside his vehicle as other voices can be heard saying 'what?' and 'yeah!'
It is uncertain if the meteor was able to reach the ground without burning up, but the National Weather Service said there were unconfirmed reports of a landing near Perry, Florida, about southeast of Tallahassee.

Large meteor explodes in sky over Siberia in third major space fire...
Bright and noisy with a long, sparkling green and yellow tail, it was filmed by multiple observers in Krasnoyarsk region.
The phenomenon caused fear on the ground.
‘I panicked as it sounded and looked like a plane on fire, I got really scared of the noise and shine it created’, said a local woman from Krasnoyarsk, the large industrial city.
‘I pulled a phone out of a pocket, but it flew across the sky so fast that I only caught a long white trace it left.’
Some residents said the meteor was blindingly bright, akin to the light and sparks created during intense welding work.
It split into several parts before disappearing in the sky somewhere over Irkutsk region, east of Krasnoyarsk.
The local ministry of emergencies confirmed it registered a meteor, and said that it didn’t pose a threat to people or infrastructure.
It is the third major meteor or meteorite event in four months.
On 18 December a meteor exploded close to Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula with a force ten times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb, according to NASA.
On 15 March a meteorite slammed into Krasnoyarsk region with local reports saying it ‘warmed the air’ and ‘shook the ground’ after streaking across the sky in a green, yellow and orange fireball.
This came down close to the site of the Tunguska Event in 1911 when a meteor exploded in the atmosphere wiping out 80 million trees, and with the estimated force of 185 Hiroshima bombs.
THE THIRD MAJOR SPACE FIREBALL INCURSION IN FOUR MONTHS
Expert Viktor Grokhovsky from Ural Federal University, studied the videos of the 6 April event and concluded that the recent space guest was a bolide.
‘It exploded quite high in the sky somewhere over Irkutsk region,’ he concluded.
'It was a bolide that moved with a speed higher than the New Tunguska meteorite (LINK) from Evenkia.
‘Its structure must have been quite loose given that it split into fragments.’
The latest meteor incursion was spotted by dash cams and eye witnesses around 7 pm on 6 April.

Fireball streaks across southern Jersey Shore sky
April 17, 2019
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbXdL5YTu50
If you saw a vivid object race across the Jersey Shore sky Tuesday evening, you’re not alone.
More than 350 spotters reported seeing a fireball across portions of the Mid-Atlantic, possibly originating above Vineland, New Jersey, streaking over Cape May, and disappearing over the ocean east of Delaware, according to a reporting log on the American Meteor Society website.
Commenters on the Cool Cape May Facebook page reported seeing the vivid fireball and feeling shaking.
“Saw it. It lit up the sky and was incredible to see. Right place right time I guess,” Jerry Inderwies Jr. wrote.
It was also spotted in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
The fireball, another term for a very bright meteor, was described as a mixture of light blue, green, orange, yellow, and white with a glowing trail, according to the AMS reports.
“It sparkled brilliantly and seemed to fall apart,” one spotted wrote.
The organization says “several thousand” fireballs occur each day, but they are rarely seen.
“The vast majority of these, however, occur over the oceans and uninhabited regions, and a good many are masked by daylight. Those that occur at night also stand little chance of being detected due to the relatively low numbers of persons out to notice them,” a fireball FAQ from AMS notes.

Cop’s dashcam captures amazing moment METEOR falls to Earth
A SPACE rock travelling at speeds of up to 45,000 mph was captured on a police officer’s dashcam while he was on a routine patrol.
Patrol officer, Nathan Kutz was carrying out an extra sweep of ocean City’s 130th street area after receiving a request from a worried resident but instead of catching a local villain he caught an intruder from outer space on his dashcam.
A spokesperson for Ocean City Police Department said: “Just before midnight, the meteor flew through the sky and was captured on PFC Kutz's dash cam.
“We are used to our dash cams catching the bad guys but the fact that it caught this beautiful display of science is incredible.”
AMAZING: The fireball was spotted around 11pm (Pic: SWNS)
Meteors - also known as shooting stars - typically hit speeds of up to 45,000mph when they enter the earth’s atmosphere.
As they head towards the surface of the earth they create a streak of light caused by friction with the atmosphere.
Meteors become visible between about 75 to 120 km above Earth and can vary in size and composition.

NASA and FEMA Will Simulate an Impending Asteroid Strike Next Week
NASA, FEMA, and other national and international agencies are once again gearing up for a hypothetical asteroid impact preparedness scenario. They hope to learn the best strategies for responding to a potential strike, starting from the moment a threatening asteroid is first detected by astronomers.
Next week marks the start of the International Academy of Astronautics Planetary Defense Conference. As part of this conference, NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office will team up with other partners to perform a “tabletop exercise” on how they’d handle the news of a (fictional) asteroid on a collision course with Earth.

NASA administrator, Jim Bridenstine, recently warned an audience at the International Academy of Astronautics’ Planetary Defense Conference, about the very real possibility of a large meteor crashing into the earth.
“We have to make sure that people understand that this is not about Hollywood. It’s not about movies. This is about ultimately protecting the only planet we know right now to host life, and that is the planet Earth,” Bridenstine said.
Bridenstine reference a large meteor that entered the earth’s atmosphere and exploded over Chelyabinsk, in central Russia, in February of 2013. The meteor measured roughly 20 meters in diameter and was traveling at 40,000 mph.
“It was brighter in the sky than the sun at that point when it entered Earth’s atmosphere. And people could feel the heat from this object from 62 kilometres away… When it finally exploded 18 miles above the surface…it had…30 times the energy of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima… It damaged buildings in six cities,” Bridenstine said.
“I wish I could tell you that these events are exceptionally unique, but they are not,” he added.
Bridenstine is among a growing number of researchers and scientists who are suggesting that governments put more effort into space programs that are specifically tasked with formulating a plan for incoming meteors and space debris.

Amazing Fireball Caused by Illinois Meteor, Caught On The Camera
May 21 2019
Recently, a Chicago policeman managed to capture on camera an impressive fireball caused by an Illinois meteor. Although it may not seem like much, this is a rare event that illuminates the night sky. Sergeant Chrusciel happened to be next to the 75th St./Interstate 355 intersection when the fireball appeared on the sky. The impressive video was caught by the video camera placed on the dashboard of the police car.
An Amazing Fireball in the Sky
The clip shows the meteor as it crosses the sky from the left to the right. From what it seems, the police officer was quite lucky to get the images on the camera. According to Jim Hoff, who works as an analyst for the Village of Woodridge management, declared that there was no report about this for the city. The event of the meteor took place early in the morning, so probably most of the inhabitants were asleep.
Soon after the event, at 5:42 AM, local time, the police department uploaded the footage to Facebook. Then, they also uploaded it on the Twitter account belonging to their department. Mr. Hoff also added that the reach for the post was over 40,000 people, which is the most viewed video they have on their page.
How Do Meteors Explode in the Atmosphere?
If this entire event made you curious about the process behind, then it’s time to have a look at the process behind. Meteors are also called bolides, and are, in fact, cosmic debris that explodes out there in the atmosphere.
The fireball that comes out of this can even shine twice as much as a full moon! In fact, they can be so big that NASA is currently hunting out larger such pieces out there that can become a threat to our safety on the planet. However, you can relax, there were no threats identified until now, so we can just relax and enjoy the show if we have the chance.

Earth is approaching the same "meteor swarm" that may have caused an entire forest to explode in 1908
A swarm of meteors heading towards Earth could have the potential to cause a catastrophic impact, a new study from Western Ontario University says. The so-called Taurid swarm is a recurring event that some scientists believe could have played a role in the biggest Earth impact of modern times, in 1908, when a space rock slammed into Siberia with enough force to destroy an entire forest.
What has become known as the Tunguska explosion of 1908 was so powerful that the blast leveled 80 million trees over an 800-square-mile area. It's considered to be a one-in-1,000-year event, according to Western Ontario University. But while the Tunguska explosion occurred just over a century ago, another such phenomenon could occur much sooner than its 1,000-year expectancy, the researchers say. That's why they're focusing new attention on the Taurid swarm.
The Taurid swarm is a dense cluster of meteors within the Taurid meteor stream. Earth periodically passes through the Taurid swarm, and it is one of the three space phenomenons that could result in a catastrophic collision. Near Earth Objects (NEOs) such as asteroids and meteoroids, as well as comets are the other two potential causes.

ZetaTalk about what really caused the Tunguska explosion
ZetaTalk: Tunguska Explosion
Note: written on Feb 15, 1996.
A source of endless speculation is the wide area of flattened trees, spread outward in a circle, the result of an apparent explosion that occurred just after the turn of the century in Siberia. No witnesses, radioactivity, or meteor remains seem to exist as pieces toward solving this puzzle. Nuclear power was not yet in mankind's hands. What occurred? The Tunguska trees are devastated by an explosion that occurred close to the ground, as evidenced by the butterfly pattern of trees knocked sideways. It was a huge cloud of well mixed methane and air, equivalent to all the natural gas being piped about in the US at any given time, and the burn spread around this cloud or that, under and over and around, until a particular pocket of well mixed methane and air had no where to go with its heat since the burn was all around. Itself burning, the heat ramped the combustion up to the explosion level.
Methane gas occurs naturally, a result of the decomposition of organic materials. Landfills must vent this or experience explosions. Some humans know they can light and briefly burn their farts. Humus or accidentally buried organic material is a source of methane gas, and if not vented, this attempts to rise, being light, and will pool if trapped. Siberia was once lush, a fact the carcasses of mastodons reveal, as their bellies are full of grass. Flash frozen and covered with volcanic dust, organic material lies as a potential. Where Siberia may appear to be a frozen wasteland, the center of the Earth is hot, and decomposition of trapped matter, proceeding slowly but over a long time, can accumulate a large, trapped pool of methane gas. Released Due to a Shift in the Earth's crust and encountering a raise in temperature sufficient to act as a spark, this would explode, with the size of the explosion in proportion to the volume of violently venting gas.
The burn was lit by the wick traveling back along the wisp of methane that had been blow up and southwest by the prevailing westerlies over Siberia. What witnesses saw was the burn off of methane that had disbursed into the air and was not sandwiched between burning masses so that its heat had nowhere to go, the basis of exploding, rather than burning, gas bombs. The process was:
The explanation that a meteor exploded above ground is an attempt by the establishment to avoid the methane gas, and thus the pole shift and shifting crust issue. Comets and meteors do not explode when encountering Earth’s atmosphere. This is not what your history or science presents to you! If they are monstrous, they plunge to Earth and leave a crater such as the Gulf of Mexico off Yucatan. If they are tiny, they burn up in the atmosphere as shooting stars. If they are midsized, they burn on their periphery but land to be rocks picked up and examined by your scientists. The lack of meteor particles or dust proves that it was not an exploding meteor. Methane, once burned or disbursed into the air, leaves no trace. Meteors leave traces, methane does not.

At least nine fireballs of unknown origin crossed almost simultaneously the sky of the city of São José do Ribamar, in Maranhão, BRAZIL. Apparently, this is a rare phenomenon, never before registered.
The meteor swarm was registered on June 26, 2019 by amateur astronomer Edgar Merizio, administrator of the EMM2 / MA monitoring station, associated with the BRAMON network, Brazilian Meteorological Monitoring Network. According to Marcelo Zurita, director of the organization, such meteoroids come from a same meteoroid that may have ruptured before penetrating the atmosphere, possibly a few hours or maybe days before its encounter with the atmosphere.

Meteorite the size of a football and weighing 33 lbs smashes into a paddy field after entering Earth’s atmosphere at 25,000mph
A suspected meteorite the size of a football plunged into a rice field in eastern India, startling farmers, authorities said on Thursday.
Onlookers said the light brown 'fireball' sent them fleeing from the field when it fell at their rural village on Wednesday afternoon, sending up smoke.
Shirsat Kapil Ashok, the magistrate for Madhubani district in Bihar state, said: 'The farmers were working in the paddy field when this heavy rock fell from the sky with a very loud noise.'
Villagers and farmers (pictured) gather around the crater formed when a suspected meteorite crashed into a rice paddy in Madhubani district in India's Bihar state
The villagers (left) returned after the smoke subsided and pulled the rock out from its four-feet-deep crater. 'We saw it has very strong magnetic properties, some shine and weighs around 15 kilograms,' Ashok added. The find is being analysed by scientists (right) as a possible meteorite
The villagers returned after the smoke subsided and pulled the rock out from its four-feet-deep crater.
'We saw it has very strong magnetic properties, some shine and weighs around 15 kilograms,' Ashok added.
The find is being analysed by scientists as a possible meteorite.
Meteors are particles of dust and rock that usually burn up as they pass through Earth's atmosphere, with those that survive the fall known as meteorites.
These rocks, unlike others that might be found on the ground, often have a dark, scalloped appearance and will seem denser than others in the area.
They also tend to be magnetic.
In 2016 authorities in southern India's Tamil Nadu state said a meteorite killed a bus driver and injured three others.
While Indian scientists backed the claim of the regional authorities, the US space agency NASA later said did not believe the object was a meteorite.
In February 2013 a meteorite plunged over Russia's Ural Mountains, creating a shockwave that injured around 1,200 people and damaged thousands of homes.
Smaller impacts, where the meteorite is only a few meters across are thought to be relatively common - happening about once every 25 years.
The largest crater made by a meteorite or comet was discovered in the Australian Outback four years ago.
It has a 250-mile diameter and is believed to have occurred more than 300million years ago.
Other craters include the 100-mile wide Vredefort Dome in South Africa, created over 2,000million years ago, as well as the 93-mile wide Chicxulub buried beneath Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula - arguably the world's most famous.
It was created by an asteroid 66million years ago - and is believed to have been responsible for wiping out the dinosaurs.

Mysterious “fireball in the sky” spotted over Quad Cities
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – Janice Blanche-Fisher was sitting outside her east Davenport home Thursday around 9:30 p.m. when she saw a bright orange “fireball in the sky” appear in the west.
“The object was too fast for a plane,” Blanche-Fisher said.
“It looked like a sideways orange ice cream cone.”
Blanche-Fisher estimates the object lingered 2 to 3 minutes, long enough for her to call her astronomy enthusiast husband, Jim Fisher, outdoors to see it.
“Jim couldn't identify it even with binoculars,” Blanche-Fisher said.
“This was something neither of us has ever seen before.”
A Federal Aviation Administration Great Lakes Region spokesperson tells KWQC area air traffic controllers reported nothing unusual Thursday evening, but he questioned whether Blanche-Fisher perhaps saw part of the Perseid meteor shower occurring from mid-July to late August.
“It was too big and slow for one of the Perseid meteors,” Blanche-Fisher said, adding that Perseid meteors in her experience appear to move much faster and remain visible for a matter of seconds instead of minutes.
Blanche-Fisher said the object traveled from the west toward the east-southeast before fading away at the horizon, at which point she contacted KWQC to share the above cell phone photo she snapped of the spectacle.
“I was just so excited, and I wanted to report it ASAP.”
While the identity of the object is unknown, some KWQC TV6 viewers speculate it was a surveillance balloon launched by the Pentagon.

BIG BANGMystery ‘explosion’ heard over New York may have been ‘fireball falling from space’, meteor experts reveal
A FIREBALL is thought to have exploded over New York earlier this week as people reported hearing a loud boom and their houses shaking.
When it first happened people had no idea what was going on but now the American Meteor Society (AMS) may have the answer.
The AMS has said that witness reports of a "boom" and a bright streak of light in the sky was likely to have been a large fireball entering the Earth's atmosphere on Monday night.
One witness told The American Meteor Society: "It was so loud, my house shook, I felt it in my chest and had me stand still for a moment in panic.
"I got ready to load my children up with our emergency bags because I thought the power plant 12 miles away from me blew up."
The society received lots of reports about the incident.
Mike Hankey, operations manager of the non-profit meteor astronomy organisation, told CNN: "What they were seeing was the light produced by the object colliding with the atmosphere."
A fireball is a bright and large meteor that soars from a vacuum in space at 1000s of miles an hour.
It can explode when it collides with the Earth’s atmosphere creating light streaks and a sonic boom sound.
Witnessing fireballs is a rare event and they can be difficult to confirm as they happen so quickly.
Nasa actually has 17 cameras devoted to capturing images of fireballs over the US but the cameras are turned off in daylight to protect them from the Sun so they were not able to capture the recent event.
Most accounts from the New York event state that the light streak and noise lasted from between 1.5 to 3.5 seconds.
So far there have been no reports of any damage caused by the fireball.

Meteor rumbles across sky in Far North Queensland - AUSTRALIA OCTOBER 2 2019

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2019-10-02/daytime-fireball-meteor-s...
PHOTO A "sky cam" in Mareeba captured the fireball at 1:30pm yesterday.
Hundreds of residents in Far North Queensland have described how the ground shook after what is believed to be a meteor streaked across the sky in broad daylight.
It happened about 1:40pm yesterday and was seen and heard across an area spanning hundreds of kilometres away from Cairns.
Witnesses described seeing a "very bright flash of light," a "shooting star" and hearing an "explosion" and "sonic boom".
Astronomer David Reneke said it was most likely a "daytime fireball" — a type of meteor.
"Seeing one in the daytime is a special event, that's for sure," Mr Reneke said.
"They are slow-moving meteors that burn and melt and are generally associated with a lot of noise because they explode overhead.
"To actually witness one of these, you have to be in the right place at the right time — it's a very special event for anyone who has ever seen one because you'll never, ever forget it."
Cairns northern beaches resident Chris Slapp said she thought there "was an earthquake".
"The table was vibrating and I could feel it … through the ground," Ms Slapp said.
Another witness, Stephen How Kee, wrote on social media that it "looked like a shooting star" and when it stopped, it "left a cloud of smoke".
Mossman resident Alan Carle said he and a group of tourists also witnessed the phenomenon.
"There was a very bright trail of light that went through and it just exploded," Mr Carle said.
"Of course you couldn't hear anything because it was so far away, but a couple of minutes later we were standing there talking about it and we just hear this thunder, but there's not a cloud in the sky, so there's certainly no thunder around."
Geoscience Australia said it was looking into the incident.

Dozens report seeing large fireball over Ohio skies on Saturday
If you saw a fireball streak across the sky on Saturday evening you’re not alone.10TV received several reports from people in central Ohio who saw a bright meteor with a long trail across the sky.
The American Meteor Society says it received more than 130 reports about the fireball, seen over Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
It was likely a product of the South Taurid meteor shower.
The shower is caused by leftover debris from Comet Encke. It’s not very active, you’re lucky to see five to seven meteors an hour at its peak, but it is known to produce fireballs.
Those are very bright meteors and they’ve been known to leave long streaks across the sky with this shower.
The shower itself peaks later this week - Wednesday night into Thursday morning - but has a large window of activity. It’s typically active from September 10th to November 20th.
This year’s peak coincides with a waxing gibbous moon which will wash out all but the brightest meteors. However, because it’s active for so long we’ll still have a shot at seeing fireballs through the month and into next month.

WATCH: People left awestruck after 'massive fireball' lights up Irish skies
IRISH STARGAZERS were treated to an incredible sight on Friday night as a massive fireball lit up the skies across the country.
Reports from areas up and down the country told of a 'fireball' shooting across the sky between 7.30pm and 9pm on Friday, October 4th.
Primarily spotted in Limerick, Kildare, and Galway, it was also seen elsewhere in Ireland as well as Wales and Scotland in the UK, and some quick thinkers were able to grab videos of the space object flying overhead with a fiery orange tail trailing behind it.
The below video captured the 'massive' fireball as it travelled over the Claddagh area of Galway city.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OP7CtU80z0
Early reports suggested that the fireball was a meteor flying close to the Earth, but The Limerick Astronomy Club revealed that the impressive sight was the result of a Chinese navigation satellite which was launched into orbit in 2016 along with some debris.
The fireball is actually some of that debris re-entering the atmosphere.
In 2011, another massive fireball which was seen across Ireland launched a hunt for fragments of a meteor, which was suspected to have landed somewhere in the North-West of the country-- but nothing was ever found.
In 1999 however, fragments of another fallen meteor were found in a countryside lane in County Carlow and sold for a price 50 times greater than gold.

Skygazers should keep an eye out for the Southern Taurids Wednesday night through Thursday morning.
At its peak, the shower usually produces 10 meteors per hour. Don't let that discourage you -- the Southern Taurids are known for launching bright fireballs that can cast shadows on the ground.
The Draconids, which peaked Tuesday night through early Wednesday morning, is a minor shower, normally consists of just 10 meteors per hour. Yet it is known to produce random outbursts of hundreds of meteors per hour.
Most of the continental United States should expect clear skies Wednesday, with the exception of the coastal Northeast and northern Plains.
If you missed these two showers, no worries! The Orionid meteor shower peaks later this month on the night of October 21 into October 22 and usually brings around 20 meteors per hour.

Fireball in Missouri seen hundreds of miles away in NWA
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) — A fireball streaking across the night sky near Kansas City, Missouri spotted hundreds of miles away in Northwest Arkansas.
Residents of Northwest Arkansas self-reported seeing a fireball in the northern evening sky Thursday evening.
According to AMSMETEORS.org, 20 reports about a fireball seen over Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma on Thursday, October 17th, 2019 around 8:21 p.m. CT.
Steve Arnold of Eureka Springs is a professional meteorite hunter who hosted ‘Meteorite Men‘ a TV series for 3 seasons on Science and Discovery channel. Arnold has been fireball chasing for 27 years. He travels, often on very short notice, to chase fireballs all over the country.
“Right now it looks like the meteor may have landed in the Kansas City area if anything survived,” Arnold said. “It is not uncommon for the larger ones, for them to be seen 300, 400 miles away.”
Arnold said he was not sure about the size of the meteor.
“Meteors come in from any direction,” Arnold said. “They come from the asteroid belt, they can be a piece of the moon or Mars that has been blasted off. They can be comets, they can also be space junk.”
The meteor that entered the Earth’s atmosphere Thursday was the 5,019 fireball that has been cataloged by the American Meteor Society from people self-reporting on its website this year.
“The oxygen burning in the atmosphere around the rock. Or if it breaks up into multiple rocks. It is really hard to tell [the size] – once we get a little more data on how big it was – there are some calculations that can be done by the amount of kiloton of energy that was displaced when it came in,” Arnold said. “Right now is’s the initial stage. People saw it.”
This is the 4th fireball reported being seen in the Northwest Arkansas area in the last year according to Arnold.
Arnold said he is going to keep an eye on the local Kansas City area to see if anything survived from the fireball.

'Fireball' seen in Timmins sky creates buzz
TIMMINS – People across northeastern Ontario are still talking about seeing a fireball falling through the sky during the evening hours on October 29.
It happened around 6:30 p.m. and social media lit like the fireball people reported seeing streaking across the horizon.
Rachel Hamelin says she saw the spectacle on her way home from work, and says she was awestruck.
"We've always watched the meteor showers in August at the cottage, so you can see all of the white streaks just all over the sky… but this was completely different because it was red and bright. It was a massive fireball. To see something like that, you see videos of it, but to actually see it with your own eyes… videos don't do it justice," says Hamlin.
Some speculated that it was a piece of a satellite, or even aliens, but an astronomy professor says it’s a common phenomenon, albeit rare to see in person.
He says the object was likely a meteor at the tail-end of a meteor shower.
"Definitely the characteristics of a very large, perhaps baseball-sized rock… flying through the earth's atmosphere and disintegrating through atmospheric friction. It's really a beautiful site," said Paul Delaney, York University.
Delaney says most meteors are destroyed by friction in the atmosphere, and those that survive can look like a rock from your garden.
He says they can give scientists much need information about our universe.
"These meteorites are a piece of our past… they're time capsule from the formation of our solar system. Being able to find them and give them to museums and other research organizations is really a valuable undertaking," he explained.
Delaney says those who saw the ball of light were pretty lucky, saying he's only seen the phenomenon maybe three times in his 40 year career.
He says if you do see one, reporting it to a meteor association can help scientists find out where it might have landed.

Fireballs Observed by Midwest Folks
Three different meteor showers are currently active, and according to reports from local residents, recent sightings have occurred in nearby Bentonville, Arkansas, and Branson, Missouri.
Two separate reports from Branson note fireball sightings occurred on Saturday, Oct. 26, around 10 p.m. and 10:10 p.m., respectively. The meteor was described as “a bright flash of whiteness, with a short light blue streak – a very large falling star.”
At present, three unique sets of meteor showers are active, namely the Southern Taurids, the Orionids, and Northern Taurids, are in viewing display.
The Leonids, which are actually known for producing meteor storms become active Nov. 6th, and will offer viewing opportunities through Nov. 30th.
Unfortunately, the peak display period for the Orionids has passed, as Oct. 21-22 was given this year as the best time for viewing their activity. According to the American Meter Society, the Orionids are a medium strength shower.
The Northern Taurids are cited as active until December 10; they are projected to peak during the night time hours of Nov. 11-12.
The Southern Taurids are currently active through Nov. 20, and according to the American Meteor Society, in past years, when the Northern Taurids and Southern Taurids are active simultaneously, an increase in fireball activity can be recorded, especially during early November.
Meteors are caused by debris entering the Earth’s atmosphere at a high rate of speed, and showers are best viewed after midnight. And, the darker the night sky, the easier it is to observe fireballs moving across the night sky. If moonlight is prevalent, fireballs are more difficult to see.

Seeing fireballs in the sky? Taurid Meteor Shower expected to peak in November
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — See any fireballs streaking across the night sky lately? Don’t be alarmed. It’s probably just the Taurid Meteor Shower, which is expected to peak around Nov. 5 to Nov. 12.
This comes about a month after the Draconids and South Taurid showers were expected to peak.
Caused by debris from comets racing by and the combined volume of the North and South Taurids, the Taurid Meteor Shower is known to produce some amazing fireballs (aka just really bright meteors), according to EarthSky, the favorite site for sky watchers everywhere.
To catch some fireballs, you should be looking to the sky starting Saturday night, Nov. 2. The best chance to catch a meteor will be after midnight on Nov. 5 through Nov. 12 with Nov. 6 being one of the predicted peak nights
The American Meteor Society explains that Taurid fireballs are notable for how slowly they travel compared to other showers. Also, they can be colorful often featuring orange.
Those hoping to catch some fireballs will have to go looking for a viewing spot away from any lights that could obscure the night sky.
Also, don’t worry about finding the right spot in the heavens to see the shower. These fireballs will be streaking all over.
