Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm.
The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated" with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. "
It has been confirmed with air traffic control that there are no incidents of aircraftin difficult and nothing registered on radar," she said. "
The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only." Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a "flare or a bright object with a tail" were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a "large ball of fire in the sky" across Annandale and Eskdale.
One user wrote on the force's Facebook page: "It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!" Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. The Observatory posted on Twitter: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I have ever seen period."

TRENTON — A bright meteor described as "bright and beautiful" streaked across the sky over New Jersey on Thursday.
"I was driving Route 206 North just south of the Somerville Circle just before 9 p.m., and I saw something streak across the sky, with a pretty bright ball with a long tail. Then it just went dark," Lorna Morehead of Bridgewater told New Jersey 101.5.
Reports to the meteor reporting website amsmeteors.org came from New Jersey and neighboring Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New York. In New Jersey, reports came from Keyport, Greenwich, Scotch Plains, Montclair, Lebanon, Manasquan, Rockaway, Franklin Lakes, and Springfield Township in Union County.
"Very bright and beautiful," Shari G. wrote from Springfield Township.
"Wow this was amazing ... loved the flash," Anuraj wrote from Montclair.
"It was probably the most beautiful natural phenomenon I'll ever witness, if it was really natural," Veronica in Franklin Lakes wrote.
"It was much larger than a shooting star or any stars in the sky. Maybe the size of a small plane," Matt S. observed from just over the Delaware River in Yardley, Pennsylvania.
New Jersey 101.5 Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said the meteor was likely part of the Lyrid meteor shower.
"The Lyrid will actually peak from dusk Saturday through dawn Sunday. With partly cloudy to mostly clear skies in the forecast, viewing conditions here in New Jersey should be very good," Zarrow said.

Fireball seen in skies above Fredericksburg Tuesday night
Fredericksburg-area residents reported that an object from outer space tore through the sky Tuesday, just before midnight, leaving in its wake a sonic boom heard by residents from Culpeper to Colonial Beach.
The meteor was “the brightest and most amazing fireball I’ve ever seen, in person or in any videos,” wrote Chase K. of Dahlgren in his report to the American Meteor Society. The night sky appeared like a giant lightning strike and it was almost as bright as daylight when the primarily red and orange fireball was seen, he said.
He didn’t notice any sound, but an observer who identified himself as William G. of Colonial Beach wrote in his report to the society that there was a loud boom and “ground shake similar to a military artillery round.”
Before readers remind us that we’re surrounded by military bases, those in the vicinity of the reports say Tuesday night was business as usual. Fort A.P. Hill has issued an aviation noise alert through Friday for low-flying aircraft training, but nothing from the Army post was in the air at the time in question, said Michael Meisberger, public affairs specialist.
He said the next statement in hushed tones.
“From what I understand, it may have been a meteor,” he said. “I can’t tell you if it’s real or if it was somebody’s imagination, [but] that’s what I heard.”
Operators in the 911 center in King George County felt the earth move and got lots of calls from residents who said the same, said Sheriff Steve Dempsey. There were no reports of explosions, fires or other disasters that might cause that kind of noise.
“Everybody felt it, but had no idea where it came from,” Dempsey said.
Facebook posts were filled with descriptions and possible answers, ranging from alien invasions to thunderclaps.
Alyssa Anne Halderman posted that she “heard a loud boom here in Caroline Pines [in Caroline County] and the house shook.”
Dan Dunmire heard it in Fredericksburg, and the noise scared Mandie Hartford in King George, who immediately checked the baby monitor to see if the noise had awakened her twins.
Michele Spears thought she had imagined it.
“I felt whatever it was and there seemed to be a faint rumble,” the King George woman posted on the King George–Westmoreland General Forum page. “My dog and I just stared at each other, waiting for more, but nothing happened, so I chalked it up to thunder and went to sleep.”
Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, said he received 10 reports from residents in North Carolina and Virginia about the fireball. Two reported sounds with their sighting, and two saw meteor fragments.
“Occasionally large fireball meteors can produce sonic booms and rumbling sounds,” Hankey wrote in an email. “Often times this means the object penetrated deep enough into the atmosphere to survive and possibly leave meteorites, but not always.”
Several thousand meteors of fireball magnitude burst through the Earth’s atmosphere every day, according to the Meteor Society website, but simply aren’t seen.
Most take place over oceans or uninhabited regions, and many are masked by daylight. Those that happen at night have smaller chances of being seen because there aren’t people out looking for them.
“They’re not uncommon,” said David Abbou, a Stafford County resident and member of the Rappahannock Astronomy Club who writes an astronomy column for the newspaper.
In 1992, he was living in Dale City when he saw a bright light flashing from the window. It was a clear night, so he knew it wasn’t lightning.
News reports confirmed his assumption that it was a fireball meteor. Because it was a pleasant Friday evening, lots of people were out and saw it, he said.
“The coolest part was it landed on an unoccupied car in Peekskill, N.Y.,” he said.
The car’s owner might have had a different opinion on that meteor matter.

Fireball Explodes Over South China (Jun 1)
According to witness reports, the event lasted for about 2 seconds and was followed by two sonic booms. This indicates the object penetrated deep into the atmosphere and that some of its pieces might have survived the entry.
According to local media reports, people living in Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province are looking for possible meteorites on the ground.

Fireball flies across Midwest skies Sunday, leaves 'brilliant green light'
http://www.foxnews.com/science/2018/07/09/fireball-flies-across-mid...
All eyes were on the evening sky Sunday (July 8) as residents across nine Midwest states reported seeing a fireball, or a bright meteor, fly by.
The American Meteor Society (AMS) confirmed Monday that it received 270 reports about the fireball event throughout Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.
"The estimated 3D trajectory computed from the witness reports shows an shallow entry angle, one that could be associated with an Earth grazing fireball," the AMS explained in a post online. "But many witnesses reported a fragmentation – it could mean the meteoroid actually went through the Earth atmosphere."
https://twitter.com/amsmeteors/status/1016248895410712576
Several people took to social media Sunday to confirm the impressive sighting.
"Airline crew here, we saw it pass from right to left (north to south) over Moline, IL. It left a brilliant green light, and shed lots of debris as it entered the atmosphere, exploding at the end," one Twitter user explained.
"Anyone just see the Big Green fireball fly thru the sky!?????? Just flew over me as I was passing Mahoney St Park. THAT THING WAS BOOKING IT!!!!!" another exclaimed.
"I also saw the green shooting star / fireball in Saint Paul. Definitely a meteorite," one user added.

Meteor Streaks by Anchorage-caught on dashcam!
ANCHORAGE, AK. A meteor made a fly-by over Alaska at 12:43 a.m. Sunday morning, and it was all caught on dash-cam as it went streaking by!
KTUU-Meteor-Graphic
A meteor is always a cool thing to see, but it happens so fast, that it is hard to get a good look let along a good photo or video. The sighting and flash of a meteor blazing through Earth's atmosphere usually lasts just seconds. You have to be in the right place at the right time with cameras rolling to catch one, and that was exactly the case for Philip Strumsky, who was driving on the Glenn Highway between Hiland Road and the weigh station, when he saw a flash in the sky.
"I saw a spectacular green meteor breaking apart to he southwest of Anchorage," Strumsky said. "My dash-cam happened to catch it, although it doesn't do justice to how amazing and bright it was in person."
The high resolution dash-cam footage shows the brief flash, though it's hard to pick out the fireball when it is so fleeting. So, we slowed the video to half-speed and zoomed in, making it easier to see the fireball as it streaks across the summer night traveling southwest.
Strumsky says other reported seeing the meteor in locations in Anchorage to Hatcher Pass, and as far away as Talkeetna and Fairbanks.
Strumsky says he reported the sighting to the American Meteor Society.

UFO sighting: ‘Big green fireball’ lights up Queensland sky
REPORTS of a huge green fireball streaking across the sky are emerging from Mackay to Townsville and Cairns.
The light has now been reported on two separate days including on Monday in Townsville and more widely again yesterday.
A man was driving along Ross River Road in Townsville towards his home in a westerly direction when he saw “a dark rectangular object” emitting a green “jet flame” appear from above, according to UFO Research Queensland.
He said it then shot off in the same direction he was travelling and disappeared as if it was turned off like a light.
The man, who has not been identified, saw the object for only a second and couldn’t clearly describe the height of the UFO, but estimated it was flying as “high as a plane”
The man described the object as “like nothing he had seen before” with what he guessed was “advanced technology due to its manoeuvrability”.
When he reached home he decided to return to the scene of the incident five minutes later to ensure he hadn’t mistakenly seen a green traffic light or other identifiable object in the vicinity at the time.
However he decided he had not wrongly identified a known object after driving through the area again.
Mysterious green light
The green fireball was again spotted flying across the Queensland sky last night, this time from as far as Cairns to Mackay and Rockhampton.
Community social media pages lit up with posts about the meteor about 7pm, the Daily Mercury reported.
Jason Jaques of Mareeba was on his way to pick up a pizza when a flash of light caught his eye.
“It was a green fireball, it was very bright and it caught the corner of my eye,” he said.
Mr Jaques’ dashcam footage of him driving out of his coffee plantation is the only video footage of the meteor that has emerged so far.
Rick Anderson posted on the Australian Meteor Reports Facebook page to say he was sitting on a balcony in Airlie Beach when he spotted it.
“[I was] over looking the whole of Airlie Beach out to the ocean at around 7pm when out of the sky over Cannonvale way came this big bright white and yellow ball with an amazing tail of blue green orange and white assumingly burning gases,” he said.
“It flew horizontally across the bay so close I felt I could reach out and catch it heading towards Hamilton Island and seemed to burn out just before impact.
“Most amazing thing to witness.”
Brilliant green lights were seen flying across the Cairns sky last night.
Justine Edward was enjoying a quiet evening with her daughter yesterday when they spotted “what looked like a green shooting star”.
“It was falling towards earth and it looked like it had sparks coming off the back,” she told the Cairns Post.
Astronomer Ian MacLean said it was most likely a meteor shower.
“I can say with 99.99 per cent certainty that it was an Aquarian or Capricornian meteor shower,” he said.
“What they would have seen is a bolide, also known as a fireball.
“The green colour is because of the nickel-iron content of the meteor.”
The astronomer said it was quite rare to accidentally catch a glimpse of a fireball meteor.
“You could go out for seven nights and see hundreds of meteors, but only two or three of these,” he said.

Sonic boom, very bright fireball reported over Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina
Posted by TW on August 17, 2018 in categories Editors' picks, Meteor activity
A very bright fireball, at least 40 times as bright as the Full Moon, streaked across the night sky over the U.S. Southeast at 05:19 UTC (12:19 CDT) on August 17, 2018. The event lasted several seconds and was followed by a sonic boom.
The American Meteor Society has so far received 42 reports from people living in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina.
"Numerous eyewitnesses in the Southeast reported seeing a very bright fireball, which was also detected by all six NASA meteor cameras in the region," Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office said.
Heatmap and trajectory. Credit: AMS
Analysis of the data indicates that the meteor was first seen at an altitude of 93 km (58 miles) above Turkeytown, Alabama (northeast of Gadsden), moving west of north at 86 400 km/h (53 700 mph). It fragmented some 29 km (18 miles) above the small town of Grove Oak.
Early results indicate the fireball, which was at least 40 times as bright as the Full Moon, was caused by a small asteroid 2 m (6 feet) in diameter, Cooke said.
"We are still assessing the probability of the fireball producing meteorites on the ground - whether it did or not, it was an extremely bright event, sen through partly cloudy skies and triggering every camera and sensor operated by the Meteoroid Environment Office in the region," Cooke said.

ALERT! 'Potentially hazardous' asteroid the size of Pyramid of Giza to hurtle 'near' Earth POSTED: AUG 23 2018 09:39AM CDT
FOX NEWS - NASA has issued an alert that a "potentially hazardous asteroid" is on a "close approach" towards Earth. However, it's nothing to be alarmed at, as the asteroid is expected to zoom past the planet approximately 3 million miles away.
The enormous space rock, known as asteroid 2016 NF23 and estimated to be between 230 and 525 feet in diameter, will zip past Earth on Aug. 29 at a velocity of 9.04 kilometers per second, or approximately 20,000 miles per hour, the government space agency said on its Earth Close Approaches page.
It is the third largest near-Earth object (NEO) on the page, behind two other asteroids which will fly past Earth in the early part of September, 2001 RQ17 and 2015 FP118.
At 230 feet, it would be slightly smaller than a Boeing 747. At the high-end of the estimate, 525 feet, it would be taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is approximately 455 feet high.
Near-Earth objects regularly fly by the planet, though "potentially hazardous objects" are ones that are less than 0.05 au (astronomical units) away from the planet, or approximately 5 million miles.
Any asteroid that comes within 4.6 million miles of Earth with a diameter greater than 500 feet is termed “potentially hazardous," according to NASA.

Fireball witnessed in Alabama, surrounding states
A bright fireball, or meteor, was spotted Saturday night by multiple eyewitnesses in Alabama and surrounding states, according to a Sunday social media post by state meteorologist James Spann, who shared information from Bill Cooke of the Meteoroid Environment Office at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville.
Observed at 10:11 p.m. Central Daylight Time, the meteor caught the eyes of witnesses in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida as well.
“There was considerable cloud cover at the time, so this meteor was detected by only two NASA cameras located in NE Georgia and North Carolina,” the Facebook post stated. “Their extreme range and the fact that they were positioned along a straight line from the event preclude a trajectory solution at this time, though the date was used to establish the brightness of the fireball, which was close to that of the 1st quarter Moon.”
An eyewitness analysis indicates the meteor originated approximately 56 miles above Oak Bowery, located north of Auburn, the post added.
“Moving at 56,000 miles per hour slightly west of north, the object – which was about 5 inches in diameter and weighed around 4 pounds – travelled 38 miles through the atmosphere before burning up 26 miles above the town of Cragford,” the post further stated. “Based on available information, no meteorites are expected to have been produced by this event.”
Reactions to the post featured commenters highlighting how they experienced a loud sound and a lightning-like flash of light.

Fireball seen over Washington late Monday night
October 3
A meteor streaked across the skies of the Washington region on Monday night, witnessed by a relative few, but described as impressive by those fortunate enough to see it.
As of late Tuesday, the American Meteor Society said it had received 15 reports “about a fireball” seen over Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania about 11:30 p.m. on Monday.
Slashing silently across the skies, most frequently seen at night, meteors seem to disrupt the normal overhead order of things, and in their speed and brilliance, often arouse sensations of awe and a sense of the mysterious.
A report from Oakland, Md, called it “bright white like staring at the sun.” It then seemed to turn orange, the report said.
“This was so cool,” said a report from Purcellville, Va.
Another report to the meteor society came from Dale City, Va.
It came from someone who had watched many videos of meteors and meteor showers.
“There are not many I’ve seen this bright and large,” said the brief report.
Not all those who spot the fireball report it to the meteor society.
One witness, who reported his observations on Twitter, asked: . Anybody else see that meteorite just now fall & burn out (looking west from #DC)?!”
According to the witness’s Tweet, “ From Logan Cir it looked like it was right over Georgetown! It was nuts. “

A fireball “turned night into day” in Spain this weekend
Observatories in Toledo, Granada and Seville recorded the entry of a fragment of the Encke comet over the southeast of the peninsula in the early hours of Saturday morning
A fragment of the Encke comet created a huge ball of fire over southeast Spain over the weekend, as it entered the Earth’s atmosphere at more than 100,000km/h. That’s according to a Facebook post from the Astrohita Foundation, which observed the phenomenon from the astronomical complex in La Hita, in the province of Toledo.
The fireball was visible from more than 400 kilometers away
The event was recorded at 12.46am on Saturday November 3, when a “ball of fire that shone brighter than the full Moon flew over the south of the country,” Astrohita wrote in its social media post. The luminosity was so unusually high that nighttime in the southeast of Spain turned into day for an instant.”
Despite the cloud cover at the time in the area, the phenomenon was registered by detectors at Huelva University, as well as observatories in La Sagra (Granada), Sierra Nevada (Granada) and Seville.
These detectors are part of so-called Project Smart, which aims to continuously monitor the skies to register and study the impact of rocks coming from the Solar System on the Earth’s atmosphere.
The analysis carried out by the researcher in charge of the project, Professor José María Madiedo, from Huelva University, established that the impact took place 122 kilometers above the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Almería, moving in a northwesterly direction, eventually extinguishing around 63 kilometers above the municipality of Pueblo Blanco (Almería).
The fireball was visible from more than 400 kilometers away.
Fragments from the Encke comet are mostly smaller than a grain of sand, and coincide with the Earth during the months of October and November, producing a series of meteor showers known as the Taurids.
However, the fragment that caused the fireball on November 3 was much bigger, measuring almost a meter across, which is why its impact against the atmosphere produced an unusually bright phenomenon.

NASA officials said the fireball in the sky is a "jet contrail, illuminated by the rising sun.” The “two tails are a dead giveaway,” NASA said.

Fireball seen from Connecticut to eastern Canada
by The Associated Press
Thursday, December 13th 2018
At least a dozen people say they saw a bright fireball blazing across the night sky in New England.
The American Meteor Society says it received reports from Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and New Brunswick.
More might have seen it if not for the timing. The fireball was reported shortly after midnight Wednesday
comment:

Jeff Beam of Falmouth wrote to the American Meteor Society that it was like a "slow-motion Roman candle or something."
Meteorologist Chris Legro of the National Weather Service tweeted that the fireball was "bright enough to light up the whole sky."

Huge Geminid meteor shower fireball caught on police dashcam
MORE DETAILS: This has the potential to be the best meteor shower of the year! With every year that passes, the Geminids meteor shower gets larger.
This meteor shower occurs every year as the Earth passes through debris left from the asteroid while orbiting the sun.
The 3200 Phaethon may have collided with another object in the distant past, which produced the stream of particles that hurdle across earth's atmosphere and created a meteor shower.
Weather of course, is the X factor, and weather forecasts now call for cloudy skies Thursday night, AccuWeather said.
Described by NASA as the strongest meteor shower of the year, the Geminids are a little bit different.
The best viewing will come 2 a.m. Friday, he said.
Observers under a clear dark sky can expect to see up to 120 meteors per hour - an average of two per minute. The Geminid meteor shower will put on a dazzling display for sky watchers when it peaks on December 13
The Geminid meteor shower will peak from midnight until daybreak on 13 and 14 December. When the detritus enters the Earth's atmosphere it catches fire, offering us a glimpse of blazing pieces of space stuff which puts on a wild show at 79,000 miles per hour.
According to Space.com, the Geminids will most likely be the best meteor shower of 2018.
NASA astronomer Bill Cooke told USA Today that the Geminids used to peak at just 30 meteors per hour, but Jupiter's gravity has brought the shower closer to our planet, increasing the rate of shooting stars.
For those planning to courageous the freezing winter mornings to watch this year's final celestial show, here are some tips from experts.
As mentioned earlier, it is very easy to spot a Geminid meteor shower; it appears yellowish in colour but its arcs branch out into a pool of various colours including bright red, blue, green and white. Unless you've served as an astronaut there's a good chance the answer to that is no. But it is slated to set about 10 p.m., after which the sky should be the darkest and best time for viewing the light display.
While the Perseid meteor shower might be more popular (likely because those in the north don't have to courageous the cold to watch it), NASA calls it one of the most prolific and reliable events and Space.com said it should be the best meteor shower of the year.

On December 13, a fire meteor of magnitude -8.1 was detected by a meteor monitoring site in Beijing.
The fireball came from this year's Geminid meteor shower. At 22:51 on December 12, the monitoring site first detected a shooting star of magnitude 1.7. Two hours later, the site observed the fire meteor of magnitude -8.1.
To measure the brightness of stars, astronomers created the concept of magnitude. The greater the magnitude is, the darker the star is. Zhang Chao, a science popularization worker at China's National Astronomical Observatory, told Beijing Youth Daily that the brightness of a fireball is usually greater than magnitude -1, but the brightness of this fireball observed in Beijing reaches magnitude -8.1, which is very rare.
According to the Beijing Youth Daily, the brightness of this fire meteor is 10,000 times than that of Polaris. It's hard to see average meteors in the city, but since it was really bright, it could be observed.
The fireball also marks the start of this year's Geminid meteor shower. Geminid, Quadrantid and Parsed meteor showers are known as three major meteor showers in the northern hemisphere. From December 4 to December 17 is the active period of the Geminid meteor shower.
From the night of December 14 to early morning of December 15 is the best time to observe the Geminid meteor shower. The volume of meteors reaches the maximum in the first half of the night, as the moonlight tapers off, observation conditions will be better.
"Geminid meteor shower is never disappointing." Zhang Chao told Beijing Youth Daily.

The first meteor shower of the new year will peak Thursday night as the Quadrantids dart through the January night sky, according to NASA.
The peak of the shower will unfold from the night of Friday, Jan. 3 into the early morning hours of Friday, Jan. 4. One of the benefits for stargazers is that the peak occurs during the new moon, allowing for a darker sky.
Those in the Northern Hemisphere could wind up seeing the most meteors.

VIDEO: 'Fireball' meteor streaks across Virginia sky Wednesday morning
Posted: Jan 09, 2019 01:48 PM EST
Updated: Jan 09, 2019 04:20 PM EST
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 'fireball' meteor lit up the Virginia sky shortly before sunrise on Wednesday.
A video posted by Twitter user 'Midlo Snow Maker' shows the meteor streaking across the sky at Smith Mountain Lake in Penhook, Virginia.
8News received several other calls from viewers who witnessed the 'fireball,' which the American Meteor Society (AMS) describes as "a meteor brighter than the planet Venus."
AMS said on their website that they received over 190 reports about the fireball, which occurred around 6:35 a.m., and was seen from New York State to North Carolina.
According to AMS, the fireball ended its flight somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Norfolk, Virginia.

Bright Fireball over the East Coast
Over 450 reports from 11 states
The AMS has received over 450 reports so far about of a bright fireball seen above the East Coast area on January 9th, 2019 around 6:34am EST (11:34 Universal Time). The event was seen from Connecticut to South Carolina.
Trajectory
The preliminary 3D trajectory computed based on all the reports submitted to the AMS shows that the fireball was traveling from North-East to South-West and ended its flight somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean North East of Norfolk, VA.
Fireball?
Based on our first analysis, it looks like the event was a fireball. A fireball is another term for a very bright meteor, generally brighter than magnitude -4, which is about the same magnitude of the planet Venus currently visible in the morning sky.
Several thousand meteors of fireball magnitude occur in the Earth’s atmosphere each day. The vast majority of these, however, occur over the oceans and uninhabited regions, and a good many are masked by daylight. Those that occur at night also stand little chance of being detected due to the relatively low numbers of persons out to notice them.
Additionally, the brighter the fireball, the more rare is the event. As a general thumb rule, there are only about 1/3 as many fireballs present for each successively brighter magnitude class, following an exponential decrease. Experienced observers can expect to see only about 1 fireball of magnitude -6 or better for every 200 hours of meteor observing, while a fireball of magnitude -4 can be expected about once every 20 hours or so.
So, if you saw this one: congrats, it’s a nice way start the year!

Large Meteor Cruises Over Colorado, Fireball Seen From 3 Other States
February 8, 2019 at 3:01 pm
DENVER (CBS4) – Several people witnessed a large fireball traveling high in the sky over Colorado early Thursday evening. It left a smoke trail that lasted for several minutes according to reports.
A CBS4 viewer in Morrison emailed and said, “I just saw a meteor fall over the western side of town. I was looking west. It left a contrail and was big. ”
The following video was submitted to our partners at KKTV in Colorado Springs. You can see the fireball just to the left of the traffic light.
Cloudbait Observatory says the fireball occurred at 6:13 pm and was widely seen in Colorado, especially along the Front Range. It was also witnessed by people in Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming according to the American Meteor Society.
Preliminary analysis from the Cloudbait Observatory indicates the fireball was likely overhead in the area around Ridgway and Ouray, Colorado. Scientists are still working to determine more information about the path of travel where it may have landed.

Fireball over Spain 2-12-2019
The sighting occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday in points of Galicia, Asturias, León and Cantabria.
A bolide - or cosmic stone - has been sighted on the afternoon of this Tuesday on the northern sky of Galicia, Asturias, León and Cantabria.
This was explained by the director of the Astronomical Observatory Ramón María Aller of the University of Santiago (USC), José Ángel Docobo, who said that "most likely" is that it was "a cosmic stone that entered the atmosphere". "It was observed in the north of Spain: Galicia, León, Asturias and Cantabria," he commented, adding that they estimate that "if something fell, it fell in the Cantabrian Sea".

Meteor fireball streaks over Westside Jacksonville
Night sky lights up across Florida
Posted: 1:22 PM, February 13, 2019
JACKSONVILLE, Fla - Several people watched the night sky light up from Jacksonville's Westside down to Melbourne Tuesday night. Vivian Parrish, in the Rolling Hills neighborhood of the Westside shared video from her doorbell camera of a fireball streaking across the sky.
Even though it happened at 2 a.m., Vivian was not the only one to see the dropping fireball around that time. A woman in Middleburg saw a very bright light bigger than a full moon but didn’t hear a sonic boom.
The American Meteor Society, which collects reports on fireball and meteor sightings, shows four other sightings -- from Middleburg to Palm Bay, in South Florida.
Meteoroids commonly burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere but they are not always noticed because of sunlight. Bigger space rocks may not vaporize completely in the sky before hitting the ground.
These meteorites are rare but often display an awesome streak in the sky. A rock that weighs as much as a paperclip can trigger a fireball by slamming into the atmosphere at 130,000 mph.
This was the case Feb. 1 when a meteor passed over Ft. Myers and struck western Cuba.

Mysterious fireball spotted over Cornwall
It was described as big and very bright with red flames coming from it
15:37, 15 FEB 2019
A large and mysterious fireball with ‘lots of flames coming from it’ was spotted in the skies over Cornwall.
According to reports, the unidentified object looked like a meteor and was really slow and big.
It was reported over Crackington Haven at about 10.30pm and the Kernow Weather Team (KWT) received another report of the sighting over West Cornwall at about 10.15pm.
The KWT took to their Facebook page to appeal for more information.
Its post reads: “Strange sighting over West Cornwall, February 14, 2019, 10.15pm ish.
“We have tonight, had a report of one of our followers seeing what can only be described as a large meteor or fireball, lots of flames coming from it.
“If you saw this or even better, captured an image, get in touch we would love to hear more about what you have seen.”
Tony Bowden, who reported the body to the KWT, explained in the comments: “What I saw wasn't green, and it was in the atmosphere, and coming down with red flames from it. Possibly a small section of the comet broke off.”
Several social media users replied that they did see the phenomenon.
Annette Knight commented: “Yes, yes I saw it. Just happened to look out of the window and saw it coming down. Really slow and big.”
Sarah Myford added: “I did see something odd in the east last night around 10.30 pm (ish) driving back through Slaughterbridge near Delabole, I thought it was a firework, but it might not have been.”
Jenna Rose Tregurtha wrote: “I saw it in Crowlas looking towards St Michael’s Mount... Very bright and it was thicker than your ordinary shooting star.”
Linsey Shenton commented: “I am south east Cornwall and I saw one last night whilst outside with the dogs never seen anything like it before.”
Bright fireballs and individual meteors will become more frequent in the next few days as part of the annual “spring meteors”.
They typically grow in intensity between February and April.
But the next major meteor shower will not start until late April when the Lyrid meteors break out into the atmosphere.
