Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm.
The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated" with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. "
It has been confirmed with air traffic control that there are no incidents of aircraftin difficult and nothing registered on radar," she said. "
The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only." Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a "flare or a bright object with a tail" were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a "large ball of fire in the sky" across Annandale and Eskdale.
One user wrote on the force's Facebook page: "It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!" Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. The Observatory posted on Twitter: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I have ever seen period."

Fireball Blazes Over Oman, Explodes (Sep 9)
Locals in Wilayat of Yanqul in Al Dhahira Governorate reported that they witnessed the object and also heard it crash.
"We are also not sure whether it landed in Sultanate, but it definitely passed through the atmosphere. But we don’t know where it landed exactly,” according to Saleh Al Shidhani from the Oman Astronomical Society.
He added the object passed through Al Dhahira Governorate and probably continued to the United Arab Emirates.
"The villagers had conflicting stories where some of them said they had heard the explosion when others denied it."

Fireball Over South Dakota (Oct 18)
Jason Rumpca of Beresford was driving to Sioux Falls from Pierre Sunday night when a bright streak lit up the sky.
“I could see glowing orange debris (and) fragments falling from it as it entered the atmosphere,” Rumpca said.
He wasn't the only one to catch a glimpse of the meteor-like flash, which prompted social media posts and calls to authorities.
The Charles Mix County Sheriff's Office received a call around 9:15 p.m. from a Lake Andes woman reporting a bright light in the sky, kind of like lightning. A nearby officer verified the sighting, according to the sheriff's office.
“(It) looked like a large ball of fire with pieces falling off as it got closer to the ground,” Bobby Mousseau, a police officer in Santee, Neb., said. “It disappeared well before the ground.”
The bright streak appeared larger than a typical falling star, according to Sioux Falls fire fighter Jim Powers.
“To me it looked green,” Powers said. “It was only there a second or two.”
“I have never seen anything like it in my life,” said Katie Christie.

Huge Fireball Sighted Over Western Finland (Oct 23)
Finland’s main Astronomical Association, Ursa, says that dozens of people reported spotting a light phenomenon in the western skies just before 8 pm Friday. According to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, the apparent meteor startled some residents in the Stockholm area.
Most of the Finnish sightings were from the Turku region, with others ranging from southernmost Hanko to Merikarvia on the Ostrobothnian coast and Mariehamn in the Åland Islands.
Those reporting observations said the object was seen in the west-south-west sky, close to the horizon.
The streak of light lasted for several seconds, says Jukka-Pekka Teitto, coordinator of Ursa’s Artjärvi observation centre in Orimattila.
“This object from space has mostly moved across Sweden,” he tells Yle.
Teitto says that while this incident was particularly dramatic, there are in fact observations of meteors or fireballs over Finland nearly every week. Bursting into flame at an altitude of about 100 kilometres, they can often be seen over a large area.
Depending on their size and angle of approach, most fireballs flicker out at an altitude of 50-60 kilometres. They usually burn up completely, leaving only ash, says Teitto.
“If it’s a bigger piece, some of it may strike the earth’s surface, in which case it’s called a meteorite,” he explains.
Teitto says that this meteor seems to have been exceptionally bright when passing over Sweden. Expressen says that the light phenomenon scared some residents of the Stockholm region, some of whom described it as resembling lightning.
Swedish broadcaster SVT reports many sightings in Kalmar, south-eastern Sweden, and on the island of Öland.

Very Bright Fireball Over Europe Last Night
Nov. 1 2015 8:30 AM
Last night (Halloween, Oct. 31, 2015) at around 19:00 local time, a smallish bit of cosmic debris entered Earth’s atmosphere and burned up over central Europe. It was very bright, and because it happened in the early evening, a lot of people saw it. Twitter was lit up with reports.
It was seen from south Sweden, Germany, Poland, and as far east as Belarus! Impressive.
Pictures and video started getting posted to YouTube and Twitter as well. Here’s one of the best ones, taken from Poland, that shows the fireball quite well.
As you can see, it gets bright very rapidly, leaves a nice glowing train (the technical term for the trail of glowing debris), and then you see the still-hot solid meteoroid fall away. This is typical behavior for meteors. The solid part (called the meteoroid) is moving so rapidly — usually more a few dozen kilometers per second — it rams the air in front of it violently. A compressed gas heats up, and the shocked air can reach several thousand degrees. This heats the meteoroid up, causing it to glow.
The rush of air past it blows the melted material off (this is called ablation), and that leaves the glowing train. The meteoroid decelerates viciously, falls below the speed where it heats the air up, and then begins its long fall to the ground (assuming it’s big enough to reach the ground). It may glow for a few more seconds, but at 40 – 80 km high the air is quite cold, and it cools rapidly. It may break apart, raining meteorites down over some area, or big chunks might hit as well. That last part’s rare, though. Unlike movies, where they show small pieces hitting at high speed, the meteoroid(s) slows to terminal velocity, usually a couple of hundred kilometers per hour (or much slower for smaller pieces), for the rest of the trip down.
This video missed the first second or two of the European event, but you can see the sky light up blue-green from it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xaaxz0yWnE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aQ41XdsJRo
A lot of folks say it looked green to them, which means it may have been metallic; nickel glows green when heated to incandescence, and metallic meteoroids are generally mostly iron with several percent nickel. Magnesium can be blue-green as well, and that’s common in stony meteorites too.
On Twitter, I got a lot of people questioning if this was related to 2015 TB145, the 600-meter asteroid/dead comet that passed Earth yesterday. Almost certainly not; the direction it was moving doesn’t line up, and the difference in time makes it unlikely as well (remember, these things are moving at 20 – 40 kps, and TB145 passed us many hours earlier; they were separated by hundreds of thousands of kilometers at least).
This video, taken by the Polish Fireball Network, shows it moving roughly SE to NW; note the Big Dipper on the horizon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmPeoEbuhaM
As it happens, the annual Taurid meteor shower is ramping up right now. It’s possible this was related; that shower is known for its fireballs. The direction kinda sorta lines up, and the radiant of the shower (the part of the sky from which meteors appear to come) was just on or above the horizon at that time, so it’s possible. But if this fireball was in fact from a chunk of metal, it wasn’t related; Taurids come from an old comet, and have essentially no metal. Hopefully we’ll know more soon.
The final question is, how big was the meteoroid? It’s hard to tell. I’d guess it was less than a meter across, but that really is just a guess. Objects that small rarely survive re-entry intact, but again it depends on what they’re made of.
All in all, a nice example of a fireball, and a good reminder that our atmosphere does a great job protecting us from the 100 or so tons of material that hits us every day.
And, of course, a reminder to look up. You never know what you might see.

An aurora-hunting north-east photographer has captured a stunning image of a meteorite fireball falling to earth.
Leigh-Ann Mitchell, from Ellon, had been out at the weekend scouring the night skies for any sign of the Northern Lights.
The self-proclaimed “aurora chaser” settled at Pitfour Estate in Mintlaw, where she thought she had the best chance of capturing the spectacular light show.
But the 40-year-old amateur snapper got more than she bargained for when she captured the moment a fireball from the Taurid meteor shower fell from the sky, combined with the heavenly aurora glow.
The shower is notorious for producing fireball flares, and experts said this year would be the best chance to witness them yet.
Mrs Mitchell’s photograph has been viewed thousands of times since it was taken in the very early hours of Saturday morning, and shared across social media in every corner of the globe.
Meteorologists across the world have also praised the stunning image, saying she captured a once-in-a-lifetime event.
She said it was a phenomenon she never expected to see, and that she had simply been in the right place at the right time.
“I’m a keen aurora chaser so I’m out with the camera at any opportunity,” she explained.
“I often visit Pitfour during the day as it’s a wonderful place with the camera. I checked recently with my phone compass what angle north would be over the lake with an aurora shot in mind.
“Myself and my husband are radio amateurs so we follow the space weather sites online and keep a keen eye on the data.
“Friday and Saturday were looking good so we headed up to Pitfour around 8.30pm, but nothing exciting was happening so we headed back home.
“More data came through around midnight so we headed back up around 12.30am to get some good colour from the aurora.
“I started shooting and from nowhere a bright streak of light came down over the lake in front of us and a green fireball lit up the whole sky then burned out.
“Thank goodness the camera was shooting a 30 second exposure and captured the shot.
“I guess we were in the right place at the right time.”

Security Camera Films Meteor Streaking Across Ohio Sky
The spectacular display was seen from as far away as Wisconsin, Missouri and Michigan.

... A meteor streaked across the Ohio night sky on Thursday -- and the spectacular sight was caught on surveillance camera.
...
Some 77 people have reported seeing the same fireball to the American Meteor Society, according to the organization's website.
It was spotted across the Ohio area, with other sightings coming from as far away as Missouri, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Cincinnati Observatory's Dean Regas, who saw the meteor from his backyard, told WLWT it was "one of the brightest I have ever seen."
...
This latest fireball came the night after what had been expected to be the peak of the annual mid-November Leonid meteor shower.
The shower is made up of tiny sand-sized bits of debris and dust that crumble off the Tempel-Tuttle comet as it passes the Earth. The particles ignite when they hit our atmosphere, and usually put on quite a show.
This year's Leonid shower -- which was predicted to peak in the early hours of Tuesday and Wednesday morning -- was quieter than usual, however, with only an estimated 15 meteors streaking across the sky per hour, according to ABC News.

Fireball spotted in skies above Armagh
A fireball was seen in the sky above Armagh on Sunday evening.
Mark Bailey, director at Armagh Observatory, said it could be seen from Letterkenny and Longford in the Republic as well as Scotland and Northern Ireland.
A fireball is a fragment of an asteroid or comet which emits a light as it burns up in the earth's atmosphere.
Mr Bailey said that the observatory received more than 30 submissions from the public detailing the sightings.
"It's very interesting to see what people do report," he said. "It's mostly people who have never seen such a bright object in the sky."
Mr Bailey said the reports from the public help the observatory to pinpoint the trajectory of the fireball.

Fireball Caught Live on WPRI-TV Sunday Morning December 6, 2015
http://wpri.com/blog/2015/12/06/fireball-caught-live-on-wpri-tv-sun...
It was more a matter of luck than anything else, but it was an amazing 1-2seconds caught live on television Sunday morning at about 8:17AM. A fireball raced across the deep blue sky over Providence, and I watched it as it happened. Look just above the smoke stack about 3 seconds into the video. To see the fireball, enlarge the video to fill your screen.
Our Hurricane Barrier Cam was pointed to the west. For perspective, the I-Way Bridge is on the right, Rhode Island and Hasbro Children’s Hospitals are in the center of the screen. I circled the streak of light in red below…you can see it behind the exhaust from the smoke stack. In the inset, you can see the pieces of the burning debris that fell off of the object.
The fireball was very bright because I saw it within that bright blue sky. If the sky was dark, thousands of people would have likely seen it. If you saw it, let me know. I’d love to know what you saw.
As the meteor fell through the sky, it burned up due to friction with the Earth’s atmosphere. What was the object? That part is unknown. It appeared to be moving from the northeast into the west. That’s not a typical direction for a piece of space rock to create a ‘shooting star’. It could have been a piece of space debris. We’ll likely never know. There is no indication the object hit the Earth. -Meteorologist T.J. Del Santo

Fireball lights up the sky above Nova Scotia
http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/fireball-lights-up-t...
Two fireballs lit up the sky over Nova Scotia on Sunday around 6 p.m., just as Boschat was setting up his camera and telescope from his home in Halifax, the CBC reports.
He was able to capture an image of the streaks, which were only visible in the sky for about 10 seconds, moments before they vanished out of sight.
Boschat, who is a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, emailed the picture to the group. One of the members works at NASA's Ames Research Centre and confirmed the streaks of light were the first stage of an Atlas V rocket that was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida to send the Cygnus spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS).
Boschat said the fireballs may have looked like meteors to a casual observer, but "you'd never see fireballs travelling sort of parallel to each other, even during a meteor shower," he told the CBC.
"I was pretty happy, kind of lucky," he said of his photograph.

Fireball streaks across sky above greater Chattanooga area
http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/local/story/2015/dec/18/fireball...
All six NASA sky meteor cameras in the region picked up the meteor at an altitude of 50 miles above the town of McDonough, NASA said. From its brightness, it is estimated that this piece of an asteroid weighed at least 150 pounds and was over 16 inches in diameter.
"It entered the atmosphere at a steep angle (16 degrees from vertical) and moved almost due south at a speed of 29,000 miles per hour," NASA stated.
The NASA cameras tracked it to an altitude of 17 miles above the town of Locust Grove, where it had slowed to a speed of 9000 miles per hour, at which point the meteor ceased producing light by burning up.
It is possible that fragments of the object survived to reach the ground as meteorites; If so, they are located in Henry County south of Locust Grove, or in the counties adjacent to this area.

Bright fireball lights up night skies of Finland
There were many of reports of a large, bright fireball that lit up skies over towns across southern Finland at about 8 pm on Saturday. Some eyewitnesses of the phenomenon said it looked like lightning or a camera flash. Still others reported they also heard a thunder-like rumbling afterwards.
The website of astronomy magazine Tähdet ja avaruus, which uses the assistance of astronomers from across Finland, says that there were some 200 reports of sightings of a bright flash of light in the dark skies of southern and western areas at about 8 pm Saturday.
According to Tähdet ja avaruus the flashing light was likely a meteorite but said they had not yet seen Saturday night's incident captured in a photograph.
If the suspected meteorite was photographed, it might be possible to determine its trajectory and possibly learn if the object may have reached the Earth's surface.

Major Daylight Fireball Over Southeastern US – January, 24th 2016
The American Meteor Society has received over 50 reports of an extremely bright daylight fireball on Sunday, Janu.... It was observed over a large portion of the north of Florida and south of Georgia. This event occurred near 10:25am ET time or 15:25 Universal Time.
Marc Fries (Research Scientist at the Planetary Science Institute located in Tucson, AZ – NASA) already stated it is a new meteorite fall! The estimated trajectory generated by Mike Hankey (AMS Operations Manager) for this event is “an absolute, spot-on bullseye [sic]” with the radar imagery obtained by NASA. More details will be provided as information arrives.
Below is the heat map of the witnesses and the estimated ground trajectory of this event.

Fireball meteor disintegrates over Lviv, Ukraine
The sky of the largest city in western Ukraine was visited by a disintegrating bright white fireball on January 23, 2016, local time.
The entry of this space rock must have been impressive and has most probably created a loud sonic boom.

A bright fireball streaked across the skies Saturday evening, prompting over 700 reports to the American Meteor Society.
The fireball was seen from South Carolina to New England around 6:15 pm eastern time.
In Falls Church, Virginia, Alex Salvador captured the meteor’s flight on his car dash cam.
People described it as yellow, orange and white, and noted it seemed to break apart or explode toward the end.
“Surprised me how low slow and bright whatever it was ..was,” a Fredericksburg resident wrote on the meteor society’s sightings page. “It was lower than the moon but seemed bright enough (behind trees even) to be as bright as the moon …”
“Seeing this was almost frightening, as it was so bright and took up 3/4 of the sky,” a Vienna resident wrote. “I physically saw it break into two and fizzle out as it disappeared. It was the most incredible thing I have ever seen.”

Fireball Over Saudi Arabia (Feb 9)
The large object can be seen in the footage which was captured on a mobile phone from a moving car.
Many residents captured the object with their mobile phones. Well-known Saudi astronomer Khaled Al Zuaq says he believes it was a meteor.
“The object appeared to be a large meteor which was seen crossing the Saudi skies at around 10.30 pm,” he said.
Just this week a man died after being "hit by a meteorite" in India.
He was the first person to die in over 200 years by being hit by a rock falling from space.

Exploding Fireball Over Queensland Australia (Feb 10)
People from across Queensland have taken to social media to describe what they say was a bright light accompanied by a boom sound.
"Was rumbling for a good five minutes before I went outside," said Bundaberg's Jamie-lee Doorey.
"Was walking back from shed, heard something from the sky as I looked up something seemed to have exploded, sparks went in three different directions.
"I've seen plenty shooting stars, this was not one, or it was huge. The rumbling continued for a couple of minutes, nothing since."
Margie Ryan, also from Bundaberg, said she was left puzzled by the sighting.
"Was inside. Saw bright flash outside. About one minute later, heard a loud bang like a clap of thunder which shook the house a bit," she said.
"Checked the BoM, no storm, clear sky, so posted on Facebook."
Gladstone's Rory Henricks said he thought he saw a plane in the sky "shooting fireworks out of its rear".
He said at 9.20pm on Tuesday, he was riding from town to Calliope and about halfway saw the object for a second.
"Nothing, then several circular firework explosions in a line behind it, then nothing again," he said.
"I flipped my visor up to have a look around, I saw some pilot lights but lost track of it.
"Was moving really fast and appeared ot have jet engines under each wing.
"I'm pretty cynical but if it wasn't a UFO it seems like someone was trying to appear like one."
Charlene Kelly Maree said she heard people had seen the object in Gladstone, while Carissa Less Hansen said she witnessed it.
"Saw it in Maryborough, Queensland, but didn't hear the noise," she said.
Dell Holdings said she saw a flash but thought it was lightening.
"It woke me from my sleep, no noise," she said.
Alyssa Gilbert said she saw a massive flash that was as quick as a flash on a camera.
"I jumped up and ran to the window thinking someone was in my yard," she said.
However, Peter Hurn believed it probably wasn't anything from another world.
"From what it sounds like it might have been a jet using flares," he said.
Kylie Campbell disagreed.
"There's no way it was a jet unless it exploded, it was a crazy site to see!" she said.
"I was actually out at Bucca, sitting on a rock in front of my car and my initial thought was someone had stolen my car; the light from it was blinding it was like someone turned my car lights on! Lit up everything!
"It was huge, it was breaking off into pieces as it was flying, you could see smaller debris light up behind it.
"Never seen anything like it before!"
Chanelle Bamblett said she thought it looked like a flare.
Jason Mccallum said he saw strange things in the sky last week.
"I didn't see last night's but on Wednesday I seen a bright white light go upwards in the sky and seconds later a green light going across the sky with what looked to be sparks coming off it and was much larger than the white light," he said.
Rachel Linda Beris Petersen took to Bundaberg Forum to ask if anyone heard loud bangs around West Bundaberg about 2am Wednesday.
"(They) sounded like gunshot noises," she said.
Tracy Simpson said she heard similar bangs early in the morning at Kepnock the night before - though it's not sure if these sounds were related to the boom.

Daytime Fireball Over Southern California (Feb 11)
“I saw it from Kearny Mesa traveling southeast looking like it was heading towards the North Park area,” according to San Diego resident Karl Bunch.
“The color was white at the tip and a day-glow light green color in the middle with a white tail.”
Another eyewitnesses included Francis French, education director at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park. He saw the meteor while he was driving to work on state Route 94.
“The front of the light looked like the arc of a welder’s torch; it was blue and incredibly bright,” he said. “And it had a yellowish tail that was very textured.”
Howard McManus said, "It was spectacular. Bright green like a welder’s arc with a long tail and relatively slow-moving. It fragmented into several pieces as it died. They looked like little sparks. I looked at my watch as I was going to report it. It was 6:37am. The sky was starting to get light.”

Daytime Fireball Explodes Over Melbourne, Australia (Jan 27)
The video, posted to YouTube by Overwatch Security, features body camera footage filmed by a worker for the firm as he walked on a Victoria beach on a stormy day.
The man faces out toward the water as the meteor lights up the sky and streaks down toward the water.
The lights are quickly followed by the sound of the object passing through the air toward the water.
The video's time-stamp indicates it was filmed just after 8 p.m. Jan. 27.
"While testing one of our Body Cameras on a stormy day a meteor hit the bay directly in front of me just as I sat down. The sound was insanely loud but only lasted for a second or two. Scary stuff, I was literally lost for words. Hopefully no boats were hit!" the man wrote in the video's description.

A meteor about 2-8 meters exploded bove the South Atlantic Ocean, at 13:55:09 UT (15:55 to Italian), in broad daylight, precisely at 30.4 ° south latitude and 25.5 ° west
longitude, between South American continent and the African (the news or the data can be found in this link http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/fireball/
It is not the first time that an asteroid falls to these latitudes always in the Atlantic Ocean, such an event exactly happened on January 2, 2014. A small object of about 3m impacted only a day after its discovery, fortunately uninhabited environment (in 'water). We remember the event of the Chelyabinsk meteor in Russia: February 15, 2013 a meteor about 19 meters
(according to the article by Borovička and co-authors of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2016) that without impact, but only exploding in the air, caused many wounded (more than a thousand), a bad post-Valentine's Day gift for that year Russians .L'energia released was equal to 500 kT of TNT (always from the article of Borovička), roughly 30 times more powerful the Little Boy atomic bomb released at Hiroshima, but ortunately exploded, equal to or more than 23 km high
This meteor February 6, pre-Valentine's Day, to be in the theme, it was detected detonated about 31 km height according to figures provided by the page on the race cars JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) in Pasadena (USA) with a speed d 'impact of about 16 km / s
A video, kindly provided for this paper, DL Clark performed by member (and fellow author of this article) the "Canadian university Meteor group" "University of Western
Ontario", explains very well the impact visually dynamic
http://physics.uwo.ca/~dclark56/Miscellaneous/Ext/20160206-135509.avi
The released energy was calculated 13 kT of TNT (6853 GJ), about 50 times less than in Chelyabinsk, but always considerable energy because the bolids on average explode with less energy to 1 kT TNT (at least for detected meteors in the last 10 years in short, it comes to an energy equal to that released by the atomic bombs, but without radiation.
If it had exploded over a city as happened in Chelyabinsk at the same height, this meteor would have caused probabilmete a dozen or a hundred injured.
For those who love the radio signals, here is the sound of the meteor radar of 'US Air Force Space Surveillance Radar in Texas:

(2/25/16) Interior Alaska residents from Fort Yukon to Eielson Air Force Base reported seeing a fireball overhead Wednesday about 7 p.m.
The fireball, which was captured on the Geophysical Institute's All-Sky camera, flashed briefly into view and disappeared. One resident described it as a green flash with a long tail. Others said the tail also contained orange and red fragments. It was visible for only seconds, they told the American Meteor Society...
...Hampton said the meteor was probably about 50 or 60 miles above the ground – about where the lower edges of the aurora form — when it burned up. At that altitude, it could be seen from a long way away, he said.
...He estimated it was no larger than a pea.

Loud bang and white lights reported in skies over Scotland
Police in Aberdeen and Inverness say they have been receiving a large number of calls about a big, bright flash seen in the sky over Scotland.
People have taken to social media to report seeing a blue, white or green light, with some saying they also heard a rumbling sound.
There is speculation it could have been a meteor or may have been a sonic boom.
Some reports suggested the light may have been seen as far south as Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders.
Jenni Morrison captured dash-cam footage of the flash as she drove on the A944 between Westhill in Aberdeenshire at about 18:45.
She said: "It was absolutely weird. The sky lit up."
Garry J Hunter contacted BBC Scotland to say he had seen the flash over Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire. He described it as "a huge fireball-like trail across the sky, which seemed to then explode and light up the whole sky".
Val Hamilton from Nethy Bridge said she saw the sky light up south west of Aviemore at about 18:45.
"I saw a white ball with a tail passing through the sky at great speed. It was very dramatic," she said.

A large white light and rumbling "bang" have been reported in the skies over the north east of Scotland, prompting speculation they may have been caused by a meteor.
Reports came in of a large white flash in the sky around 7pm on Monday, with Twitter users across the Highlands, Aberdeenshire and Perth saying they had witnessed the phenomenon.
Some people have reported feeling buildings shake as a result of the bang.
STV News weather presenter Sean Batty said the flash appeared to be from a meteor burning up in the atmosphere, lighting up a sheet of cloud.

Fireball Over Plymouth UK (Mar 1)
Ray Griffin, aged 70, was at home when he saw the "light in the sky" at about 10pm on Tuesday.
Mr Griffin, landlord of the Morley Arms in Plymstock, then heard what he describes as "gun fire" after the light disappeared.
The following day he was catching up with a pub regular, who described exactly the same turn of events.
Now Mr Griffin wants to get to the bottom of the strange sight.
"It was moving away from Laira Bridge," he recalls, "towards the A38. It looked like a bright orange ball of fire flying across the sky.
"It carried on going over and then disappeared, like somebody had just switched it off."
"There is quite a lot of meteor and NEO asteroid activity at the moment around the world. However, people only tend to pay attention when they see something for themselves or they are directly affected, and not until then."
