Fireballs on the Rise

There are increasing meteor reports recently all over the world. More debris from the Px tail...

ZetaTalk: Live Chat, written November 21, 2009

"When the debris from the tail of Planet X first started arriving in ernest, in 2004, the establishment chose to call this space junk. When the public became alarmed at the amount of space junk falling to Earth they tried to enhance the story by claiming that two satellites had crashed into each other, but this just made a bad story worse. Since fireballs have not gone away, but continued apace and if anything gotten worse, a new term has been used - asteroids. This is debris in the tail of Planet X, which is increasingly turning toward the Earth, hosed out from the N Pole of Planet X. This is why the wobble has gotten more violent, why electromagnetic disruption of dams and airplanes has occurred, and why blackouts will become more frequent. There will also be displays in the sky, some of which has already been noticed, from the electromagnetic tides assaulting the Earth's atmosphere. Stay tuned, more to come!"

Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm.

The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated" with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. "

It has been confirmed with air traffic control that there are no incidents of aircraftin difficult and nothing registered on radar," she said. "

The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only." Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a "flare or a bright object with a tail" were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a "large ball of fire in the sky" across Annandale and Eskdale.

One user wrote on the force's Facebook page: "It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!" Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.

The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. The Observatory posted on Twitter: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I have ever seen period."

2 Fireballs Seen Over U.S. Southeast (Jan 5)

Two distinct and unrelated fireballs were seen to the west of Nashville at 6:46 p.m. and 7:31 p.m. Monday.

Officials with the Marshall Space Flight Center confirmed Monday night that two fireballs occurred in the skies over northern Alabama and Tennessee earlier in the evening.

Dr. Bill Cooke with the MSFC said the streak of light caused by the first fireball was "brighter than the planet Venus." This first fireball traveled from west to east just north of the town of Dickson, Tennessee.

While the first object flew at 32,400 miles per hour, the second fireball of the evening was more than double that speed - estimated at 75,000 miles per hour.

The second object disintegrated over the town of New Johnsonville, Tennessee.

Several people in North Alabama reported seeing the second fireball.

Fireballs captured on film over Ireland and Mississippi this weekend.

    Ireland

On Sunday (Jan 18), a fireball was photographed over Dublin, Ireland.

“It was way brighter than a normal shooting star - they are ten-a-penny when you’re taking shots of the night sky."

    "I knew this was different.”

“It is definitely a fireball or bright meteor,” confirmed David Moore the editor of the Astronomy Ireland magazine.

    Mississippi

    (Source: Julie Ann Griffin)

Dr. Bill Cook with the Meteroid Environments Office said a meteor entered Earth's atmosphere Saturday (Jan 17) over Mississippi.

At 8:57 PM, an object about six inches in diameter and weighting fifteen pounds entered Earth's atmosphere southwest of Tupelo, Mississippi.

At its brightest, the fireball was as bright as the first quarter Moon.

It was detected by three NASA meteor cameras at an altitude of 45 miles.

The meteor moved northeast at 54,000 miles per hour, finally burning up at an altitude of 15 miles.

Daytime Fireball Over Houston Texas (Jan 20)

A fireball flying slowly over the Houston area raised a lot of questions after images and videos started popping up on social media. They were posted by a Webster man named Jordan Sterling.

"I'm always looking in the sky to try to catch something out of the ordinary," Sterling explained.

"I look up in the sky and just right there in the sky," Sterling says pointing to the horizon, "is a huge fireball with a giant fire tail on it just streaking across the sky!"

He grabbed his camera then rolled for three minutes as the object crawled across the horizon.

"At first I thought it was a meteor but it was moving way too slow. Meteors usually go a lot faster."

Patricia Reiff, a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University said:

"What we are seeing is a fireball or a bolide," Reiff explained. A type of meteor.

"Usually they don't linger quite so long, so this is exceptional because of how long it stayed in the air!"

Reiff says that when a meteor nearly misses the earth and skims the atmosphere as it comes around the world, it slows the speed down significantly. A slow moving meteor can make one full swing around the world before crashing or disintegrating. The fireball Sterling captures is similar to the one that fell on Russia in 2013.

"I was freaking out!" said Sterling. "Definitely I didn't know what it could've been. I thought it was going to crash somewhere and cause some serious damage! Never seen anything like that before. Ever."

Daytime Fireball Over San Francisco California (Jan 31)

A bright fireball blazed over the North Bay midday Saturday creating a frenzy of excited tweets and blog posts, and triggering calls to 9-1-1 dispatchers reporting what looked like an aircraft going down.

The American Meteor Society tracked dozens of reports of the fireball, all coming in after noon from across the Bay Area, and even as far north as Eureka.

An observer from Lafayette tells the society, “This object was moving very fast at a very steep trajectory. It was intensely clear, and the colors were very obvious. Shiny chrome was definitely part of the ball, as if sunlight were reflecting off of it. The ball was surrounded by intense white light with bright, fluorescent green trailing from the base into the front of the tail which was white at the tip. I was driving my car on the freeway and had enough time to get a good look at it. It was coming in too steep and fast to be a plane.”

Many witnesses described it as bright white, even changing colors as it glowed for about 10 seconds.

“It was amazing,” Mark Morelli of Santa Rosa told the Press Democrat, who saw it while driving down Guerneville Road. “The tip was bright green and it had a really long tail.”

Another 10 fireballs were reported last week over California.

Morning Fireball Over UK (Feb 3)

York residents watched in amazement as they saw a fireball fall from the skies this morning.

Bishopthorpe mum Chantelle Byford captured this photograph of what is presumed to be a meteor, at 7.43am.

Chantelle told The Press: "My 9-year-old daughter said there was a ball of fire in the sky. I thought it would be a lovely sunrise but she opens the blind in front of me and showed me.

"It was falling fast and you could see the flames. I grabbed my phone and we went outside to take a picture. We watched it for a while then went to the upstairs window to get a better look. I told my 18-year-old who came and had a look and my 6-year-old son.

"It was very weird; we didn't have a clue what it was. I looked on facebook to see if anyone else had seen it, and put the local news on to see if there had been anything related to it."

Large Fireball Explodes Over New Zealand (Feb 11)

A fireball was seen streaking across the night sky above North Island at around 10pm, with witnesses describing a streak followed by an explosion.

Reports from people who saw or heard the fireball came in from Nelson, Taranaki, Wellington, Wairarapa, Te Awamutu, Tauranga, Hamilton, Ngaruawahia, Havelock North and Auckland.

Last night's meteor not only put on a visual show - it appears to have also shaken the ground, a seismologist says.

GNS duty seismologist Lara Bland said there was a small signal on two local seismographs that coincided with the timing of the meteor.

"From about 9:59:18 we recorded a small increase in higher frequency energy, for a duration of about 14-15 seconds," she said.

"I think it is fair to attribute this to the meteor."

The meteor was seen and heard by hundreds of people across the North Island. It likely exploded 20 to 30 kilometres above the earth, Astronomer Dr Grant Christie said.

It appeared to have detonated at sea 150 kilometres east of Auckland.

Based on the energy it had released, it was probably between one and two metres across.

Shockwaves also hint that this was a relatively powerful bolide explosion. Had it been even more powerful, it could have damaged residential areas.

Descriptions of the light ranged from white and orange to green and blue.

Peter Chisholm, driving home from Nelson heading north on SH6, said it was a double cone shape, "with the front end glowing Palmolive-dishwash green and the second end yellow, not dissimilar to the flames from a rocket engine".

Near Upper Hutt, Andy Wardle said he saw a "green fireball-type light heading in the straight down direction".

It "appeared to explode and split into three distinctive pieces".

Another witness wrote in to tell how she could see the fireball's trail - of a green and orange hue - remain in the sky for minutes afterwards, indicating it was a relatively big one. A lingering trail would mean that not only did the meteor ionize the air molecules around it, but it also got very deep into our atmosphere before burning up, leaving behind freshly released gases and glowing superheated particles that can be seen with the naked eye before they cool.

"I was asleep and woke startled as I thought I was in a small earthquake," one unnamed citizen wrote. "Blinds and doors were shaking... I live in rural south Auckland and my dogs and horses made some slightly distressed noises which you really don't get. It takes a lot to startle them!"

    Fireball Over Spain (Feb 11)

Stargazers were amazed to see a ball of light speeding across the sky over Catalonia on Tuesday night.

Some of those who saw the bright light took to social media to seek confirmation that they hadn´t imagined the sight.

One twitter user, @xavi_roca_tico asked: "Am I the only one to see a great ball of green and orange falling from the sky really quickly?"

In fact the phenomenon was caught on camera by astronomer Josep Maria Petit Prats at the Astrogirona observatory in Sant Antoni de Calonge, Girona.

The ball of light, the origin of which is as yet unknown, appeared at 7.22pm and presented long flashes of very bright light, the observatory said.

Massive Fireball Over Northeastern U.S. (Feb 17)

A very bright fireball was seen over New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The fireball was described as a space rock about 2 feet in diameter and weighing about 500 pounds.

Witnesses from the Pittsburgh area reported hearing a delayed boom shortly after seeing the fireball.

The space rock entered Earth’s atmosphere above Western Pennsylvania and was first detected by cameras at an altitude of 60 miles above Beaver Falls.

“The fireball moved almost due east at a speed of 45,000 mph. It flared brighter than the Full Moon before the cameras lost track of it at altitude of 13 miles above Kittanning,” said Bill Cooke, with NASA’s Meteoroid Environments Office.

Cooke said there may be fragments scattered on the ground east of Kittanning.

Bright Fireball Explodes Over Florida (Feb 21)

Residents of the Sunshine State say they spotted a massive fireball soar through the Florida sky over the weekend, and similar reports have since surfaced from as far away as South Carolina

AMS has received over 200 reports of the bright fireball.

Over 15 of the reports described a window rattling boom moments after the fireball disappeared. The fact people heard booms suggests it exploded in the lower atmosphere.

The estimated trajectory plotted from the witness reports shows the meteor was traveling from the south west to the north east and ended its flight about 30 miles due west from Jacksonville, FL.

People in a Live Oak neighborhood describe what they heard as a loud smack that almost sounded like a plane crash.

“We seen a bright light and as we looked up the best way I can describe it is it look(ed) like a large firework. But then there was a big ball of fire behind it and as quick as we seen it, it was gone,” said Tracie Sradley.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Lake City Police Department said they received dozens of phone calls.

“I'm shocked, and surprised and can't believe that a meteor would hit anywhere, much less in our area,” said Stephen Dilley.

“It kind of scared us at first, like, ‘Oh my God, what's going on.'

Saturday’s incident came just a few days after similar reports surfaced up the East Coast, where residents of the Mid-Atlantic states on Tuesday described seeing a fireball that the AMS believes was a 500-pound meteor that was traveling at around 45,000 miles per hour before breaking up in western Pennsylvania.

Large Daytime Fireball Soars Over Victoria Australia (Feb 25)

Reports of a rare burst of flame across the blue sky started flooding through on social media at about 10.30am on Wednesday, with one describing it as a "fireball asteroid".

Astronomical Society of Victoria spokesman Perry Vlahos said he had heard reports of the sighting across the state, from Mildura to Wangaratta to Melbourne.

"It appears to have come in from the western sky burning with a bright orange colour and leaving a white trail behind it," he said.

Bright Fireball Blazes Across Colorado Skies (Mar 11)

A massive fireball lit up skies over Colorado just before dawn on the morning of March 11.

The meteor, flashing a glowing bright green tail, was seen by a vast number of eyewitnesses.

"As it moved towards the far horizon it started to flame out, but even after the tail was gone a bright orange ball was still visible till it disappeared beyond the far mountain range. It was pretty incredible," Greg Moore, an analyst for Weather5280 who witnessed the event, said.

"The head was bright white, and it had a deep orange tail with what looked like sparks falling behind, moving very slowly for a meteor. I've seen a lot of meteors in my day but this must have been the most spectacular, lasting for what seemed like around 10 seconds," Nate Hershey, a Colorado resident.

A huge meteorite lit up the night in eastern France on Sunday as well as other parts of Europe. It was captured on amateur video footage. The meteorite which was seen in the skies above the regions of Alsace and Lorraine near the German border was also visible from parts of Switzerland and Austria. The ball of fire passed over Europe at around 9pm on Sunday night and was largely visible to the naked eye. Witnesses told Swiss newspaper Le Matin that they saw a "flash, like a lightning bolt" and others reported hearing a dull thunder accompanying the meteorite as it passed through the sky. "The information we received clearly indicates that it was a meteorite," said Markus Griesser from the Eschenberg Observatory in Switzerland. The specialist says it is too early to determine where the meteorite may have crashed. The ball of fire was caught on camera in this amateur video footage shot in Austria.

A major search operation was launched after red distress flares were reported off the west coast of Cumbria. Concerned members of the public reported someone in trouble at about 9.20pm last night. Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team was dispatched to the area, between Workington and the Isle of Whithorn, where members took up various observation points while Workington lifeboat was dispatched to carry out a search. A spokesman for the coastguard said: "After a thorough search of the area and enquiries made - as well as receiving more reports from other parts of the country reporting lights in the sky - it was decided that the sighting was probably a meteorite." The team and lifeboat were stood down and, as the coastguard was leaving the area, the team was flagged down by a security guard from one of the local factories reporting a bright object moving across the sky.

Sky watchers spotted a fireball streaking across the sky Monday night after 8 p.m., burning in oranges, yellows, and even purples before fragmenting and disintegrating overhead.

"This was the brightest meteor I can recall having seen. It passed about a hand span or two from the moon and seemed brighter. I could not tell if it ‘burned out’ or disappeared behind the clouds. My first sight of it was directly overhead, and fully bright, not faded-in as most meteors do, so I believe it started behind me. It moved much faster than an airplane.”

More on the fireball over Hungary & Slovakia...

Meteor explodes above terrified city in massive fireball seconds before impact
A dashboard camera filmed the incredible moment an asteroid broke through the earth's atmosphere

The spectacular moment a meteor plummets towards a city in Slovakia before dissolving in a flash of light has been captured on camera.

The ‘out-of-this-world’ action was spotted by hundreds of worried people in the eastern part of Slovakia shortly before dusk on April 6 - who feared the asteroid would crash into their homes.

Lasting only a few seconds, the clip shows the meteor racing rapidly towards earth.

A split second later there is a flash of a fireball, before the bright yellow light quickly disintegrates and disappears.

Fireball Over Northern England (Apr 15)

A spectacular fireball was seen streaking across the sky Wednesday evening.

The luminescent green ball burned brightly for several seconds as it plunged earthward.

The larger-than-average meteor fell in the northern skies at 9.25pm with sightings in County Durham, Newcastle, North Yorkshire, and Cumbria.

Amateur astronomer Martin Whipp, of Ripon, North Yorkshire, said: "I was heading back home driving parallel to the A1 near Boroughbridge when I saw it.

“It was magnitude 5, which is slightly bigger than Venus and was visible for two to three seconds before it broke up into pieces as it came down. It was slightly greenish in colour."

Ian Critchley, of Birkenhead, near Liverpool, said he was travelling along the M6 near the A6 turnoff when he saw a bright flash.

“It was a greenish fireball with purplish tinges. It appeared to be half a mile away, but it was very difficult to judge the scale."

“It lit up the inside of the car, it was that that bright. It looked as though it came to ground west of the motorway.”

Bright Fireball Over Maryland and Pennsylvania (Apr 17)

AMS has received over 50 reports of a fireball in Maryland and southern Pensylvania on April 17th around 9:10pm EDT.

Observers from as far north as Toronto, Canada reported seeing the bright light in the sky.

The preliminary estimated trajectory plotted from the witness reports shows the meteor was traveling from the south east to the north west and ended its flight few miles north of Oxford, PA.

"Definitely a bolide type object with probable fragmentation. Several pulse type flares during descent," as reported by John O. on AMS.

Huge Fireball Explodes Over United Kingdom (Apr 26)

At approximately 10.10pm on Sunday, April 26, a huge explosion equivalent to thousands of tonnes of high-explosive shattered the peace and tranquility of Irish skies.

The “huge fireball” was seen from Donegal to Cork and all points in between, lighting up all of the island like daylight for about five seconds.

The fireball was also reportedly seen by people in Ireland, Scotland, and England.

A number of local people have reported seeing the fireball in Co Tyrone, including a group of people in Carrickmore.

According to Astronomy Ireland such events are caused when a large rock from space burns up in the atmosphere as it collides with Earth at speeds of up to 100,000 mph.

Speaking to the Ulster Herald, Chairman of Astronomy Ireland, David Moore said: “This event was so bright that a piece or pieces may have survived the re-entry and landed as extremely rare and valuable meteorites.”

“We are appealing to everyone who saw the fireball to fill in the online report form on Astronomy Ireland’s website (astronomy.ie) as soon as possible while the details are fresh in their minds.

“In return we will send everyone our analysis of all the reports and where we think any meteorite may have landed.”

Fireball Over Ontario Canada (Apr 29)

A fireball was seen over Peterborough's north end early Wednesday morning.

The meteor was bright light green in colour and split into two parts as it fell through the atmosphere, and could be seen for just a few seconds, around 1:58 a.m. Wednesday.

But unlike the loud daytime meteor heard nearly a year ago in Peterborough, there was no sound associated with Wednesday's fireball.

The fireball was also spotted at that time from Montreal, according to the American Meteor Society.

Meteor sightings were also reported to the American Meteor Society at 1:51 a.m. Wednesday from Niagara Falls, N.Y. and at 2:03 a.m. Wednesday from Ontario.

Did you see the meteor Friday night?

    4:18 p.m. EDT May 2, 2015

There were numerous reports of a fireball blazing across the night sky late Friday.

Dora Marcouiller said she saw it while she was driving in Eatontown about 9:40 p.m.

"It flew southeast/northwest. It was as clear as day and crossed the top of the tree line. I saw the ball illuminating the sky with the tail of burning fire behind. It was huge and very distinct," the Eatontown resident said in an email to the Asbury Park Press.

Pat Kay said she saw the light while walking her dog in Howell.

"It was very bright and distinct. The tail looked like a sparkler," she said in an email. "The brightness was the most striking thing about it."

Most meteors, or shooting stars, are visible as brief streaks of light. Marcouiller's description appears to match that of a "fireball," an unusually large and bright meteor. To be considered a fireball, a meteor must be at least as bright as Venus, according to Geology.com.

Over 250 sightings were reported to AMS from as far as Quebec, Canada to Maryland.

Rocks Fall from the Sky in N. Virginia (May 21)

Rocks the size of baseballs showered out of the sky in Sterling, Virginia this morning.

“They hit, and then smaller ones hit in succession like, ‘boom, boom, boom,'” Bob Ryan said.

At first, Ryan thought maybe kids hiding in a treeline were pelting cars. But he noticed that the rocks appeared to have rained down from the clouds, as if they were meteors.

Some rocks struck a home on Old Ox road and debris also hit the pavement near Oakgrove Rd.

Some residents in the area heard a boom at around 10:30 a.m. that they thought sounded like thunder.

Ryan said that stones then blasted car windows and damaged vehicles in a shopping center parking lot. He said he picked up some of the rocks and noticed that they had a burnt smell.

“One rock double the size of a softball was sitting on the sidewalk in front of a beauty salon,” Ryan said. “If it had gone through there would have been lots of casualties.”

Laura Rinhart, a Loudoun County firefighter, said that the rocks may have come from a nearby rock quarry. Rinehart said that some rocks struck a home on Old Ox road and debris also hit the pavement near Oakgrove Rd.

A person who answered the phone at Loudoun Quarries on Thursday said he was not sure if the rocks came from their quarry, the only quarry in the area.

Rinehart said that Loudoun fire and rescue units along with officials from the quarry are investigating the incident.

Fireball Over Vietnam, Laos (Jul 8)

Vietnamese officials are cooperating with colleagues in Laos to identify what created a streak of light in the sky and a big explosion around the border region Wednesday night.

As of Thursday afternoon, border guard forces still have not identified the cause of the phenomenon.

An army representative has ruled out the possibility of an air crash.

Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief commander of Vietnam’s army, said there has been no report of any issue with a civil or military flight in the area at the time.

Locals spotted the strange light flashing at around 9 p.m., then something fell and exploded.

Curiosity caused heavy traffic jams stretching two kilometers along a national highway in Ha Tinh Province.

Dang Vu Tuan Son, head of the Vietnam Astronomy and Cosmology Association, told Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper that the item was more likely a meteor than space junk.

Son said space junk is usually small and would not cause such a big explosion.

Comet explodes over Cuenca, Malaga and Cadiz

    http://news.gnom.es/news/comet-explodes-over-cuenca-malaga-and-cadiz

A COMET has exploded over the province of Cuenca and fragments of it have been seen from one of Spain’s largest observatories in Toledo.

Shards of rock plummeted downwards at a speed of 80,000 kilometres per hour and broke up when they hit the earth’s atmosphere in a violent impact that turned them into bright balls of fire.

This was first seen at 23.50hrs mainland Spain time above Portugal and, at 00.07hrs, the largest and fastest fragment impacted with the atmosphere above the province of Málaga on the south coast, creating a fireball as bright as the moon.

A third impact was registered at 02.23hrs over Cuenca, shattering 100 kilometres above ground directly up from the village of Sotos, veering north until it extinguished over Cañamares.

Then, a fourth and final impact at 100 kilometres up was seen at 02.25hrs vertically above the Gulf of Cádiz on Spain’s south-west coast.

Lights in the sky. So far, though it could have been a meteor or fireball. VIDEO CAPTURE

The sky turned a greenish color in the darkness. A strange phenomenon shocked the locals on Thursday and, until tonight, was not an accurate explanation. A mysterious object crossed the sky and was caught by several witnesses with their cell phones. The phenomenon was also appreciated in Entre Rios and Uruguay.

The issue turned on the social networks, especially Twitter, where they quickly multiplied the videos and photos of light in the sky. Some hypotheses that turn into networks-and were not confirmed by specialists- say it could have been a meteor (or bolide), similar to that illuminated the night tucumana in April 2013 .
