Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm.
The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated" with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. "
It has been confirmed with air traffic control that there are no incidents of aircraftin difficult and nothing registered on radar," she said. "
The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only." Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a "flare or a bright object with a tail" were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a "large ball of fire in the sky" across Annandale and Eskdale.
One user wrote on the force's Facebook page: "It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!" Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. The Observatory posted on Twitter: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I have ever seen period."

Fireball Over Southern Manitoba (Jul 9)
Scott Young with the Manitoba Museum tells CJOB they got some calls from the Interlake just before 11 this morning.
“Saying, is there something going on? I saw this big trail of smoke in the sky and then we had a big explosion, but I didn’t hear any sounds. What’s with that? Well we think what happened is a little asteroid or a big version of a meteor came into the atmosphere somewhere over Central Manitoba, and exploded.”
Young says they can’t pinpoint where it was yet, but they suspect it was in western Manitoba, so they’re asking for anyone who saw it to let them know, so they can triangulate a location.

Fireball Blazes Over SE Australia (Jul 10)
Callers to talkback radio stations reported seeing a bright object travelling east to north about 9.45pm. Some callers said they initially thought it was a burning plane.
Radio station 3AW listener John said he pulled over while driving in Keilor Park to watch the light show.
“It was really impressive,” he said. “It had the flame and the intense burn. Just as it was falling away it broke up. I’d say it was a little asteroid or a comet.”
A man at the Queen Victoria Market reported seeing a meteor going from “horizon to horizon”.
“He said it didn't get quite as bright as the moon and was mostly white with a bit of red at the end," Mr Le Marquand said.
"He said it went for 30 seconds, which is an awful long time. Usually the ones we see in the sky are the size of dust and only last a second."

Fireball Blazes Across Southern U.S. Skies (Jul 12)
A fireball streaked across southern skies around 9 p.m. Saturday and split apart near a rising Supermoon.
Mike Prendergast initially thought it was plane. “But it was moving so quick. We probably saw it for a good 15 seconds because it was coming right at us. It was one light coming, but then it broke into two. We could see a tail on it before it slowly melted away.”
The Internet is clogged this a.m. with accounts from folks who espied the light show from North Texas all the way to Florida.
From Frisco comes this account: “10 seconds I was facing north the object was traveling north to south fast moving didn’t notice colors Extremely bright, witnessed two or three fragments It was still light out but it was really bright.”
The American Meteor Society has so far received 57 reports from skywatchers in Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana and Florida.

Fireball Over Eastern U.S. (Jul 17)
The fireball was seen from primarily Virginia but witnesses from Washington DC, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and West Virginia also reported seeing the phenomenon.
Dan Perjar, a software developer at North Carolina State University, captured the 4-second video of the fireball with his dash cam installed in his car. He said the video was shot while he was driving on I-440 from Cary toward N.C. State.
The AMS reports came in between 9:15 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. on Thursday. The time code on Perjar's video indicates he captured to fireball around 10:17 p.m.
An AMS user in Selma identified as Jason B. said the fireball "was bright enough to ruin our night vision for a moment."
"It turned orange/red (streamlined) and then turned extremely bright green with many fragments breaking off," he wrote.
Alex K., an AMS user from Concord, N.C., described the fireball as "the most interesting one I've ever seen."
"It was green, flashed as if parts were combusting or breaking off, and the trail was green as well," he wrote.

‘What the heck was that?’ Fireball Soars Over Calgary (Jul 22)
Sightings were reported as far as 450 kilometres north of Calgary.
Scores of people took to Twitter and emailed the Herald about the sudden flash of light.
Jesse Shan was on his south-facing Marda Loop balcony when he saw what appeared to be cloudless lightning just southeast of the city.
“I saw a massive flash to begin with; I was like ‘woah,’ ”
He saw a blue-white streak, followed by a burning orange orb that moved slowly, lingering for about five seconds before vanishing.
“It was almost like it entered through out of nowhere and then exited again."
Other Calgarians reported a green flash, comparing the sight with falling debris or a large meteor.
Dr. Phil Langill, who directs the University of Calgary observatory guesses the rock was about a metre in diameter.

More craters found near the recently discovered hole in Siberia which the Zetas explained was the result of a meteor impact.
Two New Mysterious Craters Emerge in Siberia (Jul 28)
Taymyr Peninsula
Reindeer herders find more craters in the far north in a deepening puzzle for scientists.
One of the newly discovered holes is near the original in the Yamal Peninsula — in a land referred to by locals as “the end of the world.” It’s around 45 feet in diameter. The second is some hundreds of kilometres from the first, which is close to a huge gas extraction plant at Bovanenkovo. This new crater in the Taz district, near the village of Antipayuta, has a diameter of about 15 metres.
A deputy of the regional parliament,Mikhail Lapsui, examined this latest phenomenon.
'I flew by helicopter to inspect this funnel on Saturday 19 July,' he said. 'Its diameter is about 15 meters. 'There is also ground outside, as if it was thrown as a result of an underground explosion.
'According to local residents, the hole formed on 27 September 2013. Observers give several versions. According to the first, initially at the place was smoking, and then there was a bright flash. In the second version, a celestial body fell there.'
The third crater and hole is in the Taymyr Peninsula, to the east of Yamal, in Kransoyark region. It was accidentally discovered by local herders, inhabitants of the northern village of Nosok.
The funnel is a perfectly formed cone, say locals who are mystified at how it was formed. Its depth is estimated at between 60 and 100 metres and its diameter - more than four metres.
The herders almost fell into the hole which lies on a pasturing route.

ZetaTalk: Chat Q&A - July 19, 2014
"Clues as to the origin of this blown hole are that the soil was thrown evenly OUTWARD, that the explosion was recent as moss has not regrown over fresh dirt, and that heat was involved due to soil changes. If this was an explosion from the underground river then what was the trigger, the spark? Meteors falling on frozen ground, such as the permafrost at Yarmal, or on ice has force AND heat from atmospheric friction, and thus dive deep but also melt all within a perimeter, as this crater shows. The meteor itself, if found, will be tiny, as the explosion is caused by steam, which as those who work with steam know, is not to be under-rated in its explosive ability."

Fireball Over U.K (Jul 27)
Polesworth: "A glowing green ball falling from the sky then disappeared behind the houses in the distance. I was facing north east, the direction the object moved was north. The height at the start was much higher than the horizon and the end of it's disability was half way above the horizon. The star was three times as bright as a star, was visible for 3/4 seconds. It travelled less than halfway across the sky, no sounds were heard."
Grimsby Lincolnshire: "As I sat in my garden facing south I saw a very bright greenish yellow fireball low on the horizon and descending from right to left (moving east). I was not able to track the fireball from beginning to end as it appeared too low on the horizon and was soon occulted by trees and buildings but in the few seconds it was visible I witness several bright pieces breaking off."
Loughborough: "Just above the tree line in an East direction a very bright green fireball type light falling fairly quickly with no noise or any trail or anything. Very unnerving! It was falling from right to left in a direction of number 1 to number 7 on a clock face. It seemed to be very near and just above the tree line when I noticed it and then it disappeared in the blink of an eye almost".

A large fireball with a long tail streaked across southern B.C. skies late Monday night, sparking a social-media frenzy as people tweeted about the bright flash of light that split in two and caused a loud boom.
The meteor was spotted at around 10:15 p.m., with reported sightings of the bright fireball coming from across Metro Vancouver, Washington State and even Vancouver Island.
Witnesses say it was so bright to the point that the entire sky and ground lit up from its illumination. The meteor was green in colour and traveled from south to north.
A boom could be heard seconds after it passed, which could indicate that it disintegrated in mid-air or made contact with land.
"The fireball started as a bright white light before changing to bluish-green and then turning red".
“It was just such a beautiful thing,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like it before.”
One couple, who said they live in downtown Vancouver, reported that they saw the fireball streak across downtown toward Coal Harbour.
“I thought for sure it was on course to hit a building in the Coal Harbour area,” they wrote on the AMS website. “We went for a walk in the direction we saw it fly but didn’t find anything.”
One person who lives in North Vancouver reported that the fireball lit up the entire night sky.
The American Meteor Society received numerous reports from Vancouver, Abbotsford, Langley, Nanaimo as well as other cities. Reports also came in from Washington.

Bolide Reported Over New Zealand (Aug 18)
A lightning-like flash in the sky and then a loud bang experienced in Wanganui yesterday morning was likely a bolide.
Arthur Harris of St John's Hill said it was 6.20am when he saw the flash.
A similar light was also seen in Christchurch and Dunedin according to reports on weatherwatch.co.nz.
Mark Lee of the Wanganui Astronomical Society said the light was a bolide, the name for a large, brilliant meteor, especially one that explodes.
Mr Lee said they were more common than people thought and could be a meteor. "It doesn't explode, it is just disintegrating."
He said material only has to be the size of a refrigerator to be seen and heard.
"I saw a very bright green glowing ball fall behind my house around 10:30pm August 18 2014 it was jsut above the roof then fell into a field it was incredible I had music on so I didn't hear anything. It happened really fast. I don't know if what I saw was a piece of the meteor reported by others but it was large & very cool!"
"6 pm in Dunedin looking SW; saw a large green blue meteorite descending south leaving a good streak behind for a second or two. Was going full on until it fell below the horizon."
"6pm, I watched that same meteor from Queenstown, ripping across the sky above Lake Wakatipu. Incredible"

Spectacular Green Fireball Flashes Across New Zealand Sky (Aug 28)
Hundreds of witnesses have described the magnificence of watching a fireball flash across the New Zealand sky last night.
Seen from all different parts of the country, most eye witness accounts describe a fast moving green light with a white tail flying over the sky between 6pm and 7pm.
"Wife and I saw a bright blue/greenish light with white tail as we were crossing the Auckland harbour bridge into the city around 6:25pm. We initially thought it was fireworks but was puzzled as it came out of nowhere from the sky and flew near-horizontally before it vanished. It appeared pretty close, as if it was flying just over Freemans Bay," James commented to Weather Watch.
Stardome Observatory educator Tim Jessop confirmed the siting to Weather Watch.
Sightings came from all over the country including Wanaka, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington, Taranaki and Auckland.
Many people took to the Weather Watch website describing what they saw and seeking confirmation that the fireball wasn't a figment of their imagination.
"I was leaving my friends house in Richmond (near Nelson) at 6:30 last night when a lare green meteorite like object shot across the sky. It was travelling southwestwards and burnt out before reaching the horizon. It was larger than any shooting start or meteorite I had ever seen before and was spectacular to see. It was as though someone had let off a flare but judging by the widespread sightings it was much further away than it appeared to be," wrote Glen Hayes.
"I saw something on a drive through the Akatarawas in Upper Hutt, around 6:30pm last night. At first, it looked like a very bright star, then, as I was looking at it, it dropped suddenly, vertically, with a blazing tail, right in front of me, into the valley below. It fell between the road and the background hills, in front of the horizon. It was amazing! So close, I wondered if it was a flare, or a random firework. I wonder now if it was a fragment from the meteor that fell around the same time?" wrote a user Bright Lights.
"I also saw a green flash with white sparkles at about 630pm in Christchurch, appearing in the North travelling East to West. My first thought was that it was a firework rocket as it was travelling horizontally and appeared to be only a couple of hundred metres away," said another.

Bright Fireball Over Colorado (Sept 2)
People in 20 different towns and cities across Colorado say they saw a bright fireball streak across the sky around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
"It lasted for almost 12 seconds, and it turned into a fireball and started leaving like a long orange-yellow gaseous trail, as it started to combust in our atmosphere, and we saw it break into at least four pieces," according to Trevor Ycas.
Several in Ycas's group attempted to film it with camera phones, but were unsuccessful in capturing good images. But the time stamp from those attempts show that it occurred about 10:34 p.m., Ycas said.
There were plenty of other witnesses as well, including some who were out under the stars at Red Rocks Amphitheater for Film on the Rocks. "Meteor so large the crowd at Film on the Rocks was cheering," tweeted one.
Some of the other cities that reported the incident include Fountain, Evergreen, Boulder, Pueblo, Estes Park Littleton, Aurora and Arvada.
"The bright ones are kind of rare," said Seth Hornstein, Director of the Sommers-Bausch Observatory at the University of Colorado. "We see typically about three or so of them a year, that get significantly bright."

Brilliant fireball over Brazil [VIDEO]
Friday, September 5, 2014,
A large ball of fire has crossed the skies of the city of Campinas, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, at 22:07 UTC on Monday, 1 September 2014 The fireball was captured by the stations of Campinas (OMCJN and WAS ) and Mogi das Cruzes (MC4), and does not seem to have produced any damage. The residents said they had not heard any sonic boom, nor were discovered impact craters on the surface. The meteor, therefore, is dissolved in the free atmosphere, creating the phenomenon known to amateur astronomers as a bolide. In the video below you can see the various detonations due to friction offered by the natural protection that is our atmosphere.

'Meteorite' smashes into Nicaraguan capital
A Nicaraguan soldier checks the site where an alleged meteorite struck, in Managua, on September 7, 2014 (AFP Photo/German Miranda)
Managua (AFP) - A mysterious explosion that rocked Nicaragua's crowded capital Managua, creating a large crater, appears to have been caused by a small meteorite, officials said Sunday.
Amazingly, in a sprawling city of 1.2 million people, the impact near the international airport did not cause any known injuries, but it did leave a crater measuring 12 meters (39 feet) across and was felt throughout the capital late on Saturday.
Nicaraguan authorities believe it was a piece of the small asteroid dubbed "2014 RC," which passed very close to Earth on Sunday and was estimated by astronomers to be about 20 meters big, or the size of a house.
"We are convinced that this was a meteorite. We have seen the crater from the impact," said Wilfredo Strauss of the Seismic Institute.
The meteorite appeared to have hurtled into a wooded area near the airport around midnight and the hit was so large that it registered on the instruments Strauss's organization uses to size up earthquakes.
"You can see two waves: first, a small seismic wave when the meteorite hit earth, and then another stronger one, which is the impact of the sound," he said.
Government officials and experts visited the impact site on Sunday.
One of them, William Martinez, said it was not yet clear if the meteorite burned up completely or if it had been blasted into the soil.
"You can see mirror-like spots on the sides of the crater from where the meteorite power-scraped the walls," Martinez said.
Government spokeswoman, First Lady Rosario Murillo, said Managua would be in contact with the US Geological Service to try to get more information about "this fascinating event" in the Central American nation, one of Latin America's poorest countries.
People who live near the crater told local media they heard a blast they took for an explosion, and that liquid, sand and dust were blown through the air, which smelled like something had burned.
There were no reported injuries because the impact was in a wooded spot, and flights at the airport were not affected.
NASA said last week that the asteroid 2014 RC, at the time of closest approach, would be approximately one-tenth the distance from the center of Earth to the moon, or about 25,000 miles (40,000 kilometers).
It had been projected to be roughly over New Zealand at the time of its closest approach, which astronomers had calculated would be on Sunday at about 1818 GMT

Multiple Fireballs Reported Across U.S. West Coast (Sept 12)
There were a total of three events Thursday and Friday where people reported seeing 'events' in the sky. Two of the events occurred Thursday at 9 and 11 p.m. and Friday's event occurred around 6 a.m., Burress said.
"There was an event today at 6 a.m. – it was reported from Los Angeles all the way up to Oregon," Burress said. "It was a fireball of some kind. Nobody knows whether it was a meteor or meteorite or a piece of reentering space junk. Reports are all fresh right now – somebody was in their bedroom and the light was bright enough to notice it."
"This was one of the most incredible sights I have ever witnessed," wrote Harry T. from San Diego. "It was so bright and it streaked for a great distance across the sky. It was the largest fireball or meteor that I have ever seen."
A video taken by Anthony Fox while he was letting his dogs out in the backyard around 6:20 a.m. in Rancho Cordova, east of Sacramento, shows a white ball of light moving across the sky.
"At first I thought: 'is that a rocket?'" he said. "Went for good 15 to 20 seconds. I thought it was pretty cool ... cool and a little eerie at the same time not knowing what it was. I've never seen anything quite like that."
"I'm in the USCG and we had received three separate calls about what might be flares but didn't appear to be flares between 0604T and 0613T. We were pretty confident since all three were seen by various USCG active duty members they were not flares."

Another Fireball Blazes Across Pacific Northwest Skies (Sept 13)
Jen Pickard was fortunate enough to snap a photo of the tail end of it. She and her friend were paddling in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island after watching the sun set, when a "huge ball of fire flew by" at about 8:20 p.m.
"It was yellowish blue and flew in an arc," Pickard wrote in an email to The Huffington Post B.C. She described the 45-second streak like a shooting star but much larger and closer.
Vancity Buzz says Twitter exploded with mentions of the fireball.
Photographer Kim Gordon spotted it in Calgary at around 7:50 p.m. local time, snapping the picture you see up below and posting it to Instagram.
"When my friend and I first spotted it, the meteor was slow moving at an angle with a long streak," she told The Weather Network Sunday. "Then after a few minutes it took a sharp downwards turn and increased in speed, which is when the tails started becoming really visible. Then right before we lost sight of it, it looked like it had split into two."
The American Meteor Society was inundated with reports from across the Pacific Northwest including Campbell River. Fireball sightings in Los Angeles were also shared on social media.
"Almost unbelievable to witness," reported Joanne F. of New Westminster to the society. "It took up a portion of sky about half the size of the moon."
Dylan M. from Bellevue, Wash. said he "saw an extremely luminous light point fall nearly vertically, giving the appearance of a falling flare or firework. In the last second it was visible close to the horizon, it left a very brief trail of smoke then slight fragmentation before dimming."
This is the second time in a month that Vancouver has witnessed a large fireball. In August, residents in the city and its environs reported seeing a fireball in the skies above them.

Major Fireball Over Eastern U.S. (Sept 14)
The American Meteor Society has received nearly 250 reports of a bright fireball occurring over a wide area in the eastern USA. It occurred near 10:55pm EDT on the evening of September 14, 2014. There were a wide range of colors reported for this object but nearly everyone agreed that it was very bright, bright enough to cast shadows. There are no major meteor showers active at this time so this meteor was most likely a random occurrence, not associated with any known meteor showers.
"I'm sure everyone says this but it seemed super close. The crackling sound and sight were hardly delayed at all, less than a second. Brilliant white, yellow and green. Very low on the horizon and straight down," wrote Jon G. from Marlton, NJ.

Four Large Fireballs Reported Across the U.S. (Sept 23)
Three of the events occurred within an hour and a half of each other.
“It is rare that multiple significant fireball events occur and are reported to the AMS in the same evening," the organization says on its website.
After analysis of the time, proximity of witnesses and pointing data gathered, it was determined that each event was unique.
Event #2305-2014 was seen at approximately 1:11 local time (EDT) in FL and GA.
Event #2306-2014 – Witnesses from MI, IL, OH, IN, ON WI, PA, NY and KY reported a bright fireball over Michigan around 21:55 local time.
Event #2307-2014 – Witnesses from TN, AR, AL, MS, MO and KY reported seeing a fireball over Tennessee at approximately 20:30 local time
Event #2308-2014 – Witnesses in CT, PA, NY, NJ, MA and MD reported seeing a bright fireball in North Easter Pennsylvania near 20:47 local time.

Fireball Spotted Over Southeastern U.S. (Sept 26)
According to the American Meteor Society's website, people in Charlotte, Mint Hill and Lancaster were among those who spotted the streaks in the sky.
Reports came in around 11:15 Friday night and 3:15 Saturday morning. Twenty-nine reports were made in total.
One man in Virginia Beach captured the light on camera. Jim Rydel's video doesn't directly capture the meteors but shows the flashes in the sky.
Some say it appears like more and more fireballs are passing over us nowadays.

Fireball Blazes Over Central U.S. (Sept 28)
Residents in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin and as far away as New York have reported seeing a large, multi-colored fireball with a long tail heading east across the night sky.
Reports on AMS:
"It first caught my eye slightly below Hercules area, where it was VERY orange and VERY bright. It transited through Draco and Cepheus, and broke up a little while in Cepheus (at least two, maybe more pieces). After breakup, it was distinctly more greenish colored, and carried on through Perseus and off behind the trees toward the horizon."
"I saw something that looked light a comet tonight in the sky outside over my back yard. I live in Tinley Park, Il. I noticed it coming out of the western sky ,and it was glowing yellow with a stream of fire coming from the back of it. There was no noise . It traveled over my house heading northeast."
"I have never seen a fireball that traveled so slow and clear! I could see that the object was not round but jagged! I didn't get to see it disappear because it went behind my house and my view was blocked, but I did see it travel clear across the sky."

Fireball Over Utah (Oct 2)
A fireball lit up Utah's morning sky on Thursday, with people reporting blue and green lights as it passed overhead about 4:40 a.m.
Over a dozen reports from Utah, Arizona and Colorado are currently being investigated AMS.
With dazzling flashes of green, blue and white, the mysterious fireball silently soared over the state.
A couple's video captured the burning white ball's passage through the sky.
Seconds later, witnesses took to Twitter reporting flashes of blue and green.
"The sky was crystal clear, and as usual I was looking up at the sky, looking at the Orion constellation. 'Then in front of me I saw a bright green, white, blue, light with a tail. Reminding me of a falling star, except much larger, and slower."

Fireball Over Oklahoma City (Oct 3)
A fireball was seen over parts of central Oklahoma City early Friday.
On a 911 call to Oklahoma City police early Friday, a man who says he is at Standard Iron & Metal at 1507 E Reno Ave. reported seeing what looked like an airplane coming down out of the sky about 4:50 a.m. He said it appeared to be about 3 miles north of him.
The object was falling at a 45 degree angle that was, “too fast for a safe landing or anything,” the caller said.
“I didn’t hear an explosion or anything like that,” the caller told a dispatcher.
Firefighters responded to what was first reported as a possible plane crash, said fire Battalion Chief Brian Stanaland. Firefighters went to 1501 E Reno Ave at 4:52 a.m. and found no evidence of an aircraft crash.
“It is possible someone saw a meteorite,” Stanaland said.
One caller was driving on May Avenue and saw the streaking light, according to police radio reports. The light was from a meteorite, said one officer who reported on police radio.

Daytime Fireball Blazes Over Arizona (Oct 4)
Several reports of a firbeball streaking across the northern Arizona skies were reported Saturday morning between 8:55 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Meteorologist Mark Stubblefield with the National Weather Service said the fact that it was visible during the daytime indicates it was quite bright as it entered the atmosphere and was burning up over parts of Arizona.
Stubblefield said there was some smoke visible for 10 to 15 minutes after the initial calls.
Witnesses in Holbrook saw the meteor to the northwest, and other reports had it north of Winslow.

Did you see the fireball over west Alabama Monday morning?
Did you see this morning's fireball over west Alabama at about 9:35 a.m. CST? If you did, the American Meteor Society wants to hear from you. The AMS has already recorded eight reports from Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas.
One of the reports came from Fayette west of Jasper. Jennifer H. reported seeing the fireball for between 2 and 5 seconds.
Daytime fireballs usually look like "a brilliant white speck with a tail," author and expert Robert Lunsford says on the AMS website, but the brightest ones can show colors. Jennifer H. in Fayette reported seeing a dark green.
If you heard a sonic boom (usually a minute or two after a sighting), that means the fireball made it into the lower atmosphere and fragments may be on the ground.

Fireball streaks across Japan skies
JAPAN (NBC/EBU) — People in western Japan saw a spectacular sight from the heavens Monday night. A flash of light cut across the night sky around 6 p.m. Remote cameras at two airports caught the object in action.
It could be seen for about four seconds in real time at Fukuoda’s airport, two seconds at Hakata’s airport. Experts said it was probably a fireball, meaning it was a piece of an asteroid that ignited as it entered the Earth’s atmosphere. This asteroid was small in comparison to the one that exploded over Central Russia last year.

Brilliant fireball seen across Texas sky
By Jim Spencer, KXAN First Warning WeatherPublished: November 8, 2014, 9:56 pm Updated: November 8, 2014, 11:28 pm.
Some witnesses describe seeing two objects, and a greenish-blue tail—likely from the meteor breaking apart. Some say it appeared as bright as fireworks, briefly turning night into day.
The sightings weren’t limited to Central Texas. Reports of the meteor came from across the state. The Maverick Co. Sheriff’s Department reported the ground shaking due to a meteor landing at about 8:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, however, no confirmed meteorite debris has been found, and the shaking may have been the effect of a sonic boom.

A new map from NASA helps visualize bolide – fireball or bright meteor – data gathered by U.S. government sensors from 1994 to 2013. The data indicate that small asteroids struck Earth’s atmosphere on 556 separate occasions in a 20-year period. (they dont mention that it increased exponentionally. But still a start?)

Meteor surprises many in Delaware
A bright and rapid visitor treated many in New Castle County to a surprise Wednesday night.
By 9:53 p.m., the American Meteor Society, a nonprofit that tracks and investigates meteor sightings on its website at www.amsmeteors.org, received 100 reports of a fireball seen in the sky from Delaware, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The fireball was also seen from parts of Ontario, Canada.
The site listed each witness report as they came in, with one from Newark occurring at 8:23 p.m. Wednesday.
"I have never seen a meteor so bright and so close," the Newark witness reported to AMS. "I was waiting for a loud sound, but luckily there was none."
The meteor was spotted by a News Journal reporter, who reported seeing the fireball between Middletown and New Castle at about 8:25 p.m.
"Did anyone else see that? Driving north on 13 a couple miles south of Odessa at about 8:25 Wednesday night, I saw to my front left – north-northwest – what appeared to be the brightest-looking meteor I've ever seen," News Journal reporter Bill McMichael wrote on the Middletown-Odessa-Townsend Facebook page. "Remarkably big and bright."
McMichael also said the meteor had trails and didn't appear very high in the air.
"I half thought it was a falling chunk of aircraft," he said. "But, no sign of an explosion, and no sound."
A New Castle County police official said dispatchers received no reports of a meteor sighting, but many followers of the News Journal's Facebook page each reported a sighting from various spots throughout the county, including Wilmington, Hockessin and the Christiana Mall area, among other places.

Bright, exploding fireball streaks across the sky over Northeast U.S.
A bright fireball lit up the Northeast sky on Wednesday night as it streaked over southern Canada and upstate New York.
The fireball occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The American Meteor Society estimates that the fireball began over Ontario County in northwest New York and traveled west-northwest over Canada before terminating southwest of Toronto.
Estimated path of Wednesday night’s fireball. (American Meteor Society)
“Many witnesses described an increasing intensity before it terminated,”writes Mike Hankey of the American Meteor Society, “a common trait of bolide meteors.” A bolide is a particularly bright meteor that explodes in a flash near the end of it’s path.
Nearly 200 sightings have been reported on the society’s website, from Detroit to central Massachusetts and south into the Mid-Atlantic.

The fireball was seen as far south as the D.C. region, where many of our followers on Twitter were lucky enough to be outside for the event.

Fireball Over Banff Turns Night into Day (Dec 20)
Abernethy said he and a fellow photographer were set up at Johnson Lake taking a shot of Mount Rundle at around 1:22 a.m. when the sky lit up.
“It fragmented into three pieces. We were both in awe. Then I realized my shot was exposing as it was going on,” he said, adding he used a 40-second exposure.
“Everything was lit up like daylight,” he told the Weather Network.
Calgary astronomer Alan Dyer said in an e-mail that by looking at the photo, it appears to be a fireball, “and a bright one at that — a natural meteor entering the atmosphere and burning up.”
It’s not clear from the photo if fragments might have survived to reach the earth, Dyer added.

Christmas Fireball Over Spain (Dec 24)
While King Felipe was delivering his inaugural Christmas message, a different kind of show was taking place in skies above Spain with an earth-grazing fireball travelling diagonally from the south-east of Spain to the north-west of the country.
The 100kg (220 pound) rock with a diameter of just one metre entered Spanish skies at the border between the regions of Murcia and Almeria and left the country via the south of Galicia about a minute later.
Travelling at 80,000km an hour, the fireball's passage was "a tremendously unusual phenomenon", the University of Huelva's resident meteorite expert José María Madiedo told Spanish daily ABC
"There were people who saw the fireball while they were driving and who had time to park, and get out of their car, and there was still light in the sky," Madiedo said.
