Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm.
The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated" with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. "
It has been confirmed with air traffic control that there are no incidents of aircraftin difficult and nothing registered on radar," she said. "
The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only." Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a "flare or a bright object with a tail" were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a "large ball of fire in the sky" across Annandale and Eskdale.
One user wrote on the force's Facebook page: "It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!" Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. The Observatory posted on Twitter: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I have ever seen period."

Large Fireball Blazes Across Mid-Atlantic States (Sept 29)
A large fireball was seen streaking through the night sky over 8 states and the nation's capital around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Delware Middletown-area resident Dan Foraker described the fireball as a “perfectly round ball of fire.”
“I’ve never seen anything that big. I didn’t know if there was a plane going down,” he said. “It lasted for about six seconds and went down behind the trees. I didn’t hear a sound, but I was waiting to hear a loud boom.”
The ball of fire was reported by a witness in Wilmington about 7:08 p.m., one in Ellendale at 7:14 p.m. and a witness in Lewes at 7:15 p.m. About that same time, an observer in Salisbury, Md. also reported a sighting.
The American Meteor Society, meanwhile, is investigating 21 reports from witnesses who saw this fireball over Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia and West Virginia between 7 p.m. and 8:13 p.m.
Another massive fireball was sighted about 7:30 p.m. Saturday night in the Atlanta area and was reported to the scientific organization by 250 witnesses in Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina.

Fireball Explodes Off Philippines (Oct 2)
A ball of fire streaked from the southern skies at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, hitting the coastal water before exploding and illuminating nearby villages.
Senior Inspector Edilberto Alvarez, the police commander of Station 9, confirmed the mysterious phenomenon but could neither offer a clear explanation of the incident at Barangays La Paz and Talisayan.
Alvarez said a dull but loud explosion occurred later at the sea water fronting Barangay Talisayan.
“It was confusing because based on my own experience an improvised bomb if exploded would not create such bright and colorful light covering a massive area compared to that one… whatever it was,” Alverez said.
The police official also dismissed the possibility that the ball of fire that exploded was man-made.
The police official said investigation conducted from among the residents of Talisayan disclosed that that ball of bright glaring fire streaked from above the skies came from east to west, passing through the airspace of Barangay La Paz toward Talisayan.
The areas were brightened up briefly by the passing mysterious ball of fire that hit the middle of the sea water in front of the NY canning company in Talisayan and exploded.
The police commander said none of the people in the area could also tell who were responsible for such mysterious explosion.
Alvarez they continued to investigate but admitted limitations in going deeper since the area where the ball of fire landed and exploded was in the deep sea.

Fireballs Observed Across Mid-Atlantic U.S. and Scotland (Oct 14)
More than 100 witnesses from Virginia to Connecticut reported seeing the fireball about 8:25 p.m., according to the society.
It is estimated to have entered the atmosphere over southern New Jersey, likely landing somewhere in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Witnesses reported seeing it silently but brightly shooting across the sky before appearing to burn up.
"The breakup was so visible I could see many of the fragments glow green as they fell strait (sic) down from its position," a report from "Johnny B." in Aberdeen said on the society's website. "Shaun B." in Laurel reported seeing it turn from reddish to blue to bright white.
Hours earlier in Scotland, a display of the Northern Lights over the Highlands was lit up by a fireball.
Byron Griffiths, who lives on the Isle of Lewis, took the below shot around 8.30pm on Monday as it fell through the sky.

Fireball blazes through Pacific N.W. skies
By Sue Vorenberg, Columbian features reporter
Published: October 30, 2013, 12:46 PM
At least that's what early risers in Clark County and much of the Pacific Northwest can claim if they were looking at the sky at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday morning.
That's when a brilliant whitish-blue fireball streaked through the sky for about eight seconds, according to reports from across the region.
OMSI and the American Meteor Society are hoping that those who saw it will report in with details on the Web at http://www.amsmeteors.org/.
"Those people who saw it, they'll remember it for the rest of their lives," said Jim Todd, OMSI's director of space science education.
The short duration in the sky makes fireballs hard to photograph, but Todd said he's hoping a security camera or other device may have captured the event.
Todd didn't see it himself, but he's seen other fireballs in the past at OMSI star parties.
"It's pretty exciting," he said.
The Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency had no reports from the public about the event, a dispatcher said.
But the AMS website had more than 40 reports from Oregon, Washington and other states by noon on Wednesday.
One person who reported seeing it in Vancouver said it was the "first (fireball) for me, coolest thing other than northern lights."
Another person in Longview said it was the "biggest ever seen by me."
Fireballs are created by meteors that burn as they travel through Earth's atmosphere. They heat up because of friction with the surrounding gasses.
There's a scale for reporting the brightness of fireballs. A magnitude -3 or -4 is as bright as Venus in the evening sky. A magnitude -12 is as bright as the full moon. A magnitude -26 is as bright as the sun.
The magnitude of Wednesday's fireball appears to be around -8 to -10, Todd said.
In the sky over Clark County, the event would have been to the north near the horizon, Todd said.
Details, like the color, location and if there was a sound, can help scientists determine the speed, composition and other aspects of the meteor.
"One key would have been if there were a sonic boom reported, that might indicate some parts of the meteor survived," Todd said. "Meteors also come in much hotter than man made space debris (like satellite parts)."
The blue-white color of Wednesday's meteor suggests it was traveling very fast and very hot, and that the composition is probably nickel iron or some other metal, which is typical of an asteroid. A orange or yellow color would indicate it was moving more slowly.
"The timing of fireballs is sort of random, but this certainly won't be the last one," Todd said. "They happen all the time."

The bolide exploded near Sarajevo - possible meteorite fall
A little after midnight, to be precise in 0:36:59 hours, the second of November, above Sarajevo in the multiple blast through the atmosphere penetrated meteorite body whose parts could fall to the ground as meteorites.
Bosnia-Herzegovina meteor network run by Astronomical Society Orion and Federal Hydrometeorological Institute in Sarajevo (cameras in Sarajevo, Gradacac and peninsula) registered a raid of bolides with magnitude above -9 as bright as the moon in the first quarter. This is the brightest meteor-bolide that has been observed so far during the probationary BH meteor network.
Fireball flew at a speed of about 20 km / s and turned off at an altitude of about 30 kilometers, which, according to previous experience of astronomers, it means that the possible eventual decline of the body to the surface of the Earth. According to preliminary calculations of experts from the Astronomical Society of Orion, the crash would be the area of a triangle-Bugojno Zenica-Travnik. Meteorite bodies arrive below this level, if not completely fall apart, depending on their composition, they give us a chance to find them as a meteorite.

Huge flash of blue light' spotted around Montreal, Ottawa most likely a meteor
Published Wednesday, Nov. 27 2013, 12:45 AM EST
Scientists say that hundreds of reports of a “blue flash of light followed by a loud booming sound” around Montreal and Ottawa are consistent with a possible meteorite strike.
Hundreds of people took to Twitter and Facebook on Tuesday around 8 p.m. (ET) to report the sight. And though researchers have yet to confirm it – either through sonic radar or surveillance video – they say that it was most likely a meteor.
“Hundreds, if not thousands of people are chiming in through social media, Internet forums and in comments on news media articles, saying there was this bright flash of light followed by a loud booming sound – probably a sonic boom,” Royal Astronomical Society of Canada spokesman Andrew Fazekas said.
“There were some suggestions it could be a weather-related event, like a thunderclap associated with this winter storm that went over the region, but the fact that it was felt and seen over such a large geographic area, and the description of the blue light and the sonic boom – I think it was a meteor event,” he said.

Fireball Seen by Hundreds in New England (Jan 12)
Hundreds of people on Cape Cod and elsewhere in New England reported seeing a large fireball flash through the sky at around 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cape Cod Times and the American Meteor Society.
The "large, bright, long duration fireball" was reported by witnesses to be brighter than the moon, which is nearly full, according to Mike Hankey of the American Meteorological Society, who writes that the meteor apparently entered over southwest Vermont and headed north.
"This was a very large fireball. Comparable to the size of a traffic light hanging in a 4 way intersection but flying across the sky. It was there long enough to tell my husband who was driving to look and to discuss it as well as think about whether I had time to dig my phone out of my purse to take a picture." said Carolyn B. of Beverly, MA.

Thousands Witness Fireballs Over Saudi Arabia (Jan 16)
Videos show twin fireballs moving through the sky on January 16 in the Saudi Arabia city of Medina.
The fireballs were reportedly spotted at approximately 9:00 p.m. At least two fireballs are visible moving through the sky in the videos. The video at the top of this post was recorded near the Prophet’s Mosque in Al-Masjid al-Nabawi Square.
Arabic newspaper Al Sada reported the sighting. And according to news website Emirates 24|7, one of the witnesses who recorded video of the incident explained, “I was passing just near the mosque when I saw the object . . . I captured a film of it but I could not trace it as it split into two or three parts.” This witness description, paired with the fireballs appearance in the videos, suggests that what streaked through the Saudi Arabia sky was a meteorite breaking up as it entered the atmosphere.
The incident was reported on several meteorite and fireball websites, and was apparently witnessed by thousands of people.

Large Fireball Observed Over Northern Ireland (Jan 15)
People across Banbridge and other parts of the country have reported seeing a large meteor shooting across the night sky.
It was seen breaking up into pieces on the evening of Wednesday, January 15, with sightings reported across Banbridge, Lurgan, Moira, Belfast and Dublin.
People took to Twitter to report the sightings.
“Noticed a meteorite I think, flying through the air above Banbridge about 6.30pm was an amazing sight!”.
Many people described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
Armagh Observatory received many telephone and internet reports from members of the public reporting sightings of the meteoroid. Reports of the fireball can be viewed as a link from the Armagh Observatory website.
A report from Donaghcloney said: “An orange fireball in the East, travelling roughly South to North, about 35-40 degrees above the horizon. Became white before splitting in two, then became orange again and burst into 4 or 5 pieces and disappeared.
“It was very bright, travelled almost horizontally from my viewpoint and traversed roughly a 45 degree arc of sky. In view for about three or four seconds I think. Easily as bright as Jupiter, maybe brighter.”
The fireball was described as a “streak across the sky lasting 4-5 seconds, lovely tail, bits breaking up towards the end” by a person in Rathfriland.
Another report from Rathfriland said: “I was facing due east and observed a medium bright orange coloured star sized object crossing the sky from right to left over Rathfriland.
“It lasted for about two seconds and then broke up into three or maybe four parts.
“It broke up just below and to the right of the moon as I looked at it. Very impressive.”
The fireball was also witnessed by people out running near the Outlet Shopping Centre Banbridge.
“I was running with a friend and our attention was drawn to the colour and the sound of a large fireball about 10ft-15ft in length.
“It was travelling at high speed.
“It was a clear evening which made it stand out beautifully!
“It came from the general direction of Newry and was travelling in general direction of Dromore just in land off the A1 dual carriageway. It wasn’t that high off the ground approximately 150-200 ft but disappeared in direction of Dromore.”

Meteorite in England drop of a celestial object Friday
A meteorite or "fireball" was spotted by many surveillance cameras Friday, February 14, 2014 in England.
The observation of the object in the sky on Friday at 18:30 local time, was confirmed by the UKMON (United Kingdom Observation Network), English observatory sky. Outside surveillance cameras from the sky, many witnesses sighted and did not hesitate to describe it as "spectacular". The meteorite was also seen from France by a few lucky observers, a meteorologist at The Weather Channel.
According UKMON, it would be a ball of "sporadic" fire: an isolated object, unpredictable at the moment, not belonging to a rain of meteors transient (shooting stars)

A meteor shook several cities in the center and west of Santa Fe- ARGENTINA
A loud noise was heard and a tremor. It was received in several cities in central and western Santa Fe Unlike what happened in Santiago del Estero the fireball was not seen because it was cloudy. disintegrated in the air.

A meteor weighing between one and two kilograms (approx. 2-4 pounds) caught fire as it entered the atmosphere and was seen in several regions near the coast.
Last Saturday evening, February 22, a fireball crossed the sky over Catalonia, according to several eyewitness testimonies gathered by the meteorological services at TV3.
Meteorologist Eloi Cordomí explained during Sunday's TV newscast Telenotícies Migdia that it had probably been a bolide or a meteor weighing approximately 1 or 2 kilos. It had caught fire as it entered the atmosphere.
The phenomenon described by Mr. Cordomí and later reported by Nació Digital was visible from different areas in Girona, el Maresme, el Penedés and Tarragona.
Numerous Twitter users replied to the meteorologist's appeal for eyewitness accounts, and confirmed having seen the fireball from Tordera and Vilassar de Dalt as well.

This is interesting, not only because the fireballs are on the increase around the World, but because the Moon already acts as a magnet for incoming debris and (in its own way) helps to shield us from it. No doubt that during this increase in Planet X Tail Lashings that will bring more Space junk, rocks, and debris the Moon is also vulnerable.
So this may be an indication of things to come on the Moon as well. Brilliant light shows resulting from Planet X Debris....another slap in the face of the Cover Up!

feb 27 2014
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqHHNY8YVUA&feature=player_embe...
Look, up in the sky! A bird? A plane? Superman? No, just a bright white fireball captured on video in a Madison police officer's squad car.
On a cold Wednesday night on the city's West Side, a veteran police officer saw something not normally seen when on patrol, Madison police said in a news release.
"The officer was parked near the Hy-Vee store at Westgate Mall when just before midnight, a large, bright white fireball pierced the cold night sky," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.
"The object was moving extremely fast and would have without question struck the ground," the officer said in his report.
A fellow officer driving on Old Sauk Road also saw the same "long fire trail," the release said.
The first officer was able to catch the fireball on video.
Fearing the worst, such as the fireball possibly being an airplane, he drove to where he thought the object might have crashed, near a local television tower.
"He could find nothing out of the ordinary, and he also checked with the FAA," DeSpain said. "No large planes were in the area."
After taking a few moments to figure things out, the officer decided whatever fell from the sky could have been a long distance away.
"I didn't see any impact flash or hear an impact," the officer said.
"His conclusion was it most likely was a meteor or maybe some space junk that momentarily heated up an otherwise cold night on routine patrol," DeSpain said.

Fireball Blazes Across Mid-Atlantic Skies (Feb 27)
A fiery meteor was spotted over many area of Washington, DC; Virginia; North Carolina; and Maryland Thursday evening, including Fairfax, Kensington, and Pentagon City.
“A white center with red tail, sinking and moving quickly,” said a Twitter user who spotted it over Kensington.
“I was getting on 495 from 95 – it was huge! I was waiting for an explosion. Really cool,” said Julie Matthews via Facebook.
“Looked like a giant fireball,” said Brad Lowry, who saw it from Greensboro, NC.
“Saw one shoot over the National Mall; looked bright and green,” added Joe McMonigle.
“It was a beautiful greenish white with a long tail,” an observer in Vienna reported.
“The fireball moved very fast and was brighter by far than any meteor I've ever witnessed. It almost looked like a fast moving green flare,” wrote a Springfield resident.
The fireball was spotted about 7 p.m., in many cases by people driving. An Alexandria resident noted that the meteor’s path appeared to run parallel to Interstate 395.
The fireball prompted dozens of reports to the American Meteor Society.

Separate Fireballs Explode Over New Mexico and Canada (Mar 6)
Fireball over Yellowknife, Canada on March 6, 2014
Two different fireballs exploded over New Mexico and Yellowknife, Canada within hours of each other.
The fireball over north central New Mexico occurred just after midnight.
"It was brighter than the full Moon and shook houses from its sonic boom," according to Thomas Ashcraft.
People in Albuquerque’s north valley tell KRQE News 13 it was so loud their houses shook.
Approximately two hours later, a similar fireball streaked over Yellowknife, Canada, exploding so brightly that the flash turned the night sky blue (top photos).
There were also three recently discovered asteroids that zipped closely past Earth within the past 48 hours.

Mysterious Blasts Light Up Sky Over Siberia (Mar 6)
An explosion of unclear origin illuminated the sky over eastern Siberia on Thursday morning, leaving frightened locals to speculate about an asteroid or malfunctioning rocketry, media reports said.
The blast, for which no official explanation has been offered, was witnessed by the population of the Kyrgydai village in Russia’s Yakutia region, the Vesti14.ru news website said.
The above video from a surveillance camera documented the bright flash in the sky.
Reports said some debris apparently plummeted into the taiga after the explosion, but nothing had been recovered by the time of this article’s publication.
No man-made rocketry was publicly scheduled to fly over Yakutia on the date of the explosion. But the area has been hit by debris from Russian carrier rockets at least four times in the past.
Russia is building a new spaceport in the far-eastern Amur Region, but it is not to become operational until 2015.
A blast in the sky was also reported on March 4 in the western Siberian city of Nizhnevartovsk.
Authorities offered no explanation.

Irish Skies Lit Up By ‘Extremely Bright’ Fireball (Mar 8)
An ‘extremely bright fireball’ was seen streaking across Irish skies on Saturday night before breaking up, Astronomy Ireland has said.
The organisation received “lots of reports” of sightings of the meteor which lit up the sky shortly after 9.30pm.
“Fireballs are seen quite rarely, but when they appear on a clear evening when people are travelling from work we often get inundated with reports,” said astronomy Ireland chairman David Moore.

Fireball Blazes Across Atlantic Canada (Mar 18)
A bright fireball lit up the whole northern sky over Canada's Maritime provinces early this morning.
Nova Scotia callers reported the bright light over Halifax, Dartmouth, Chester, Mount Uniacke, Truro, and Wentworth at about 5 a.m. AT.
Rick Parker, who lives on Mattatall Lake near Wentworth, N.S., said the light was so bright it got him out of bed.
“It was a bright light and it lit up the whole sky, and when I looked out the window, I just saw what appeared to be maybe the tail end of it, if you like, and it was almost like a meteor but not the same," he said. "It was falling in the northern horizon.”
“It started as a bright light. It lit up the sky enough to make me look out. I was just lying in bed, thinking about a fire in the wood stove, actually, and it lit up the whole sky. I mean it was very bright.”

Second Fireball in 2 Days Blazes Across the Atlantic Canada (Mar 19)
Just one day after Maritimers spotted a bright fireball flashing across their predawn sky on Tuesday, a second fireball was spotted this morning.
A webcam looking over Halifax Harbour (above), caught the meteor as it streaked through the sky.
CBC News reporter Phonse Jessome saw the colourful fireball in the northwestern sky above Fall River, 25 km north of Halifax, at 5:17 a.m. AT Wednesday.
He said he saw it make a long, slow entry before breaking up into three or four pieces as it reached the horizon.
“I see shooting stars on this shift [all the time],” Jessome tweeted. "This was no shooting star. Not sure what’s going on up there but it looks cool."
Astronomy "experts" called it a "cosmic coincidence." Yeah... right.

It’s a good thing Chicken Little doesn’t skydive, because he’d be seriously losing his cool right now. How else is he supposed to react to this video of a Norwegian skydiver nearly colliding with what appears to be a meteor?
The diver, Anders Helstrup, told Norway’s state TV channel, NRK, he caught the incident on camera during a skydive in 2012. He has only recently come around to the idea that the mysterious, falling object could have been a meteor, and not something else, like a rock falling from his skydiving partners, their plane or even from his own parachute.

Fireballs Observed in New Zealand and U.S.
New Zealanders are reporting sightings of a "massive" meteor seen in the skies over the country on May 2. In the U.S., AMS received 35 reports of another fireball blazing across six states on May 3.
Edward Ennis, of Christchurch, said he saw a "massive meteor burn up in the sky" from his home in Spreydon about 7.55pm.
"Never seen anything like it," he said. "Amazing."
Vice president of the Canterbury Astronomical Society Adrian Kelly said he was holding an open night at the organisation's observatory when a "sizable fragmented fireball" was seen.
He said the meteor was probably a couple of metres in diameter and had broken up in the earth's atmosphere causing the dramatic image seen across the country.
"It's not often you see them break up."
Another witness commented online that they had seen a "bright light with tail on it" about 8pm over Lower Hutt.
Others described it as "a large white shooting star, heading south-ish, with a firework-like tail" and a "bright flash in sky proceeded by [a] falling fireball, shattering into small pieces".
Tony Smith from Parklands in Christchurch told reporters he first thought it was a shooting star.
"It then turned into a fireball. I said to my partner, 'I just saw a meteor'. She thought I was crazy," he said.
A motorist driving up Hills Rd in Christchurch last night said it was "an amazing green, like Superman Kryptonite green".
"We were sitting inside with the lights on when both my husband and I noticed the very, very bright fireball through our windows. Other friends to the East of us near Lowell, AR saw it too - 7 miles east of Lowell on Beaver Lake. They said it went eastward from NNE to ENE. They saw a flame behind it with sparks flying off, them a bright green explosion and then it was gone," according to Jacqueline C. in Colcord, Oklahoma.
Staci F. in Jay, Oklahoma said, "It was very bright and lasted a lot longer than others I've seen. Before it disappeared, it began leaving an intense red tail. Then it looked as though it split apart before fading from view."

4 Fireballs in 3 Days - Today's Explodes Over Ontario (May 4)
New Zealanders reported a "massive" fireball and a large fireball with numerous sonic booms fell over Arkansas on May 2. Another bright fireball was seen over North Carolina on May 3 and today, a daytime fireball over Ontario marks the fourth significant fireball event in the past 3 days.
The meteor society posted a comment from a person who said he was from Toronto and that the flash was brighter than a lightening bolt.
Dana Petrillo, of Colbourg, Ont., tweeted that her house vibrated and that she first thought there had been an earthquake or explosion.
“It was a really low rumble that just reverberated through the walls. It really wasn’t a shaking, like in an earthquake, but more like a wave. It really did feel like an explosion,” she said.
Most of the equipment the university has to track meteors was not in operation Sunday afternoon, but a series of microphones the university has in place did detect a shockwave, Brown said.
Based on the data and the eyewitness reports it appears the shockwave occurred in the area of Peterborough, Ont., and its characteristics allowed for an estimate of the size of the meteor, said Brown.
”The energy is somewhere in the order of a few tens of tons of TNT explosive equivalent,“ he said in an interview Sunday night. ”That would translate into something on the order of half to one metre in diameter and that’s going to be a mass of ….a few metric tons.”
It’s possible some fragments hit the ground, Brown added.

2 Fireballs Seen over West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee
Two large fireballs were seen and reported by many witnesses on May 15th 2014.
The first one was seen primarily from Georgia but witnesses from South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and other states also reported seeing it (May 15th 2014, 9:38pm EDT – May 16th 2014, 1:38pm UT).
The second fireball was seen primarily from Kentucky and Ohio but witnesses from West Virginia, Indiana and other states also reported seeing it. (May 15th 2014, 10:15pm EDT – May 16th 2014, 2:15pm UT).
Hundreds of calls came into 911 centers in Boone, Raleigh, Logan and Kanawha counties at about 10:15 p.m., said meteorologist Joe Merchant. Merchant said callers described hearing explosions and a bright light in the sky.
“Kanawha 911 said it looked like fireworks going off on their radar, it appeared that close to them, so it must have been pretty bright,” he said.
Merchant said the explosive sound was a “sonic boom,” probably caused by the meteor breaking into pieces before it hit the ground.
Before Boone County 911 dispatchers got word from the weather service, they sent police to investigate several calls they received about an explosion.
“Some people were saying their homes were shaking,” a dispatcher said.
“The fire departments were calling us asking what was going on,” a Lincoln County 911 dispatcher said.
One of two meteors that lit up the Southern sky Thursday night burned up over Tennessee.
Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, said the very bright meteor entered the atmosphere over Columbia, S.C. at 9.38 p.m. The basketball-sized meteor flew northwest at speeds reaching more than 78,000 miles-per-hour, eventually burning 52 miles above Pikeville, Tenn., just north of Chattanooga. In all, the meteor flew 290 miles, which Cooke said is quite rare. A sonic boom associated with a fireball is also quite rare, according to the website.

Giant Fireball Falls From Sky in North Queensland (May 15)
Yesterday evening, residents of Townsville in north Queensland saw a massive fireball falling to Earth.
Residents said the meteor had a bright blue and orange tail as it fell, hitting the ground some distance away and causing a bright, noiseless explosion.
Mount Isa resident Virginia Hills says she accidentally photographed the phenomenon.
"Just happened to be - very fluky and one of those multiple shots of the moon that I was taking - rising up coming over the horizon," she said.
"We happened to catch this blazing light that was ... just falling straight down."
“It was pretty big and this thing hit like a bomb — it was huge,” said Townsville homeowner Terry Robinson. “I don’t know how big it was, but in the sky it looked like half a dozen jumbo jets falling out of the sky at the same time.”
Despite looking like it was close, it’s probable that the meteor eventually made landfall a long distance away. Astronomer Owen Bennedick told ABC that while most of the meteorite would have been burned up in its entry through Earth’s atmosphere, any part that fell would have been distant to Townsville watchers: “Only the heavier objects make it to ground, the rest of it burns up in the atmosphere.
“My experience is that most people think it’s landed just over the next door hill, but the pieces have actually landed hundreds of kilometres away. They look like they’re very close but that’s not necessarily the case.”

Large Fireball Reported Over Southeast Australia (May 25)
Dr Andy Tomkins, a Senior Lecturer at the School of Geoscienes at Monash University, says there were reported sightings of a loud, white flash at ground level at around 6:30pm on the worldwide meteorites news website.
Dr Tomkins encourages people to check their CTTV cameras from Sunday evening in hope of locating the meteorite.
"We can use that to figure out the direction that the meteorite came from and where it's likely to have ended up on the ground, particularly if there is some sort of time stamp on the video that really helps us nail it down as well."
"We use video from multiple directions from where people have seen it from multiple angles to triangulate down toward the ground position."
He says people who heard a loud bang on Sunday evening would have been within close proximity to its landing.
"Usually it gets brighter the closer you are to it, then a bang, the boom people heard is when you're really close to it, people can usually see a smoke trail if they're fairly close."

Mysterious Fireball Swirls Over UK Skies (June 5)
Katie Real, 11, saw the bizarre fireball in the sky above her home in Northampton after going to draw the curtains on Saturday night.
She rushed to get her laptop computer and filmed a 39-second clip showing the bright object apparently performing loop-the-loop in the evening sky.
The schoolgirl's mother, Fiona Fearon, 30, said: 'Katie was watching a film on her laptop in her bedroom when she went to close the curtains and she saw this weird fireball in the sky.
'She quickly pressed a button on her laptop to film it, and when she showed it to me I was just amazed.
'Initially we thought it could be a plane on fire, but it appeared to be dancing across the sky. It was an amazing site.
'It’s very weird - it looked like a ball of fire moving around in the sky.
'It just seems to sort of float there, spin around and then disappear behind a clump of trees.'
Mrs Fearon said she rang an airfield nearby the following day to ask if the ball of light was anything to do with them, and was told it was not.
She added: 'I’ve read about strange lights appearing during thunder storms called ball lightning, but there wasn't lightning on Saturday night so it’s a mystery.'
Katie said: 'I was looking out of my window when a large glowing ball of light caught my eye. It was moving very fast.
'It was pretty scary and I’d love to know what it was. I’ve never seen anything like it.'

Bright Fireball Seen Across the Black Hills and Great Plains (Jun 5)
"It was spectacular," he said. "When I saw it, it was going from east to west."
Other residents also reported seeing what they believed to be a meteor that night.
Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office said the closest match he could find to the event described was a bright fireball seen over Iowa on June 5 at 11:22 p.m. central time, not far off from the time of the local sightings.
The American Meteor Society received two visual sightings of the fireball as well. Doppler reports also showed 34 sightings of a fireball between 9 and 10 p.m. across Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota and Nebraska.
Gladfelter originally thought it was about 10,000 to 20,000 feet in the air, but if it really was visible in places like Colorado too, "that means it was a lot bigger than it looked," he said.

WATCH: Giant 'missile' meteor spotted streaking over UK skies and exploding as it plunges to Earth
June 30, 2014
A fireball originating from space has been spotted streaking over the UK on camera.
The ‘bolide’ meteor was spotted over the West Country, Wales and the West Midlands in the early hours of this morning.
The rock did not cause any damage – but it serves as a reminder of how vulnerable our planet is to enormous objects hurtling through space.
Dave Jones of the UK Meteor Observation Network (UKMON) said it was by far the largest fireball ever spotted by the observatory.
Some eyewitnesses are reported to have said it was green in colour.
And it was said to even cast shadows due to its brightness
