A crane tipped off its tracks on the Port Mann bridge construction project east of Vancouver on Friday morning and dropped a segment of the bridge into the Fraser River.
Bridge project spokesman Max Logan said the gantry crane, which is designed to move on rails, is secure and nobody was hurt, but a 90-tonne section of the bridge deck the crane was moving fell into the Fraser River.
The segment struck a pile as it fell and is now submerged in the river. It is unclear whether the segment can be recovered.
The bridge segments are brought in by barge and lifted into place by the special 720-tonne horizontal gantry crane, which is also called a segment launcher.
Logan said one of the supports for the gantry appears to have been crushed and the gantry pitched forward.
It is unclear how long the mishap will delay the project, but the contractor Kiewit is responsible for any costs that result.
The Trans-Canada Highway remains open on the old Port Mann Bridge and there are no reports of any injuries.
When completed, the $800-million bridge will provide 10-lane crossing of the Fraser River for the Trans-Canada Highway east of Vancouver. It is scheduled to be completed in 2013.
A 250-foot-tall crane collapsed Friday morning onto a building at a construction site at the Kent County jail complex in Grand Rapids, injuring three people, authorities said.
The jail was placed on lockdown following the incident. Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess described the injuries to a construction worker and two Kent County jail trustees as minor, The Grand Rapids Press (http://bit.ly/ziaMEe) reported.
Both the department construction company officials said all inmates and workers were accounted for.
Construction company Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. said Friday in a statement it was investigating the cause of the accident and had no further information. Hess said it appears that a cable snapped as the crane was carrying cement.
Images from the scene showed part of the crane leaning against a building. A garage area where sheriff's vehicles are kept was damaged.
The main jail that houses inmates apparently wasn't damaged, and Hess said authorities were checking the structural integrity of that building.
The crane that fell has been used for seven months on a $27 million renovation project, Hess said.

2 workers killed in crane collapse on Everett, Massachusetts waterfront
Updated on: October 24, 2025 / 11:12 PM EDT / CBS Boston
A large crane collapsed on the waterfront in Everett, Massachusetts on Friday afternoon, killing two workers. Skyeye was over the scene on Rover Street, not far from the Encore Boston Harbor casino, where the crane fell on a dock, and barge.
Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria said a cable snapped and the crane fell on workers cutting pipes off the dock. "Two young guys, you know 30s, 40s, working to provide probably for their families, lose their life at work," DeMaria said. "I'm sure when they left home this morning that wasn't even a thought."
One person died at the scene. Another was taken to the hospital with injuries and later pronounced dead. Their names have not been released. The body of one of the workers was removed from the crane hours after the collapse.

"This is a very commercialized space. With regards to any type of extrication, it does warrant a large amount of resources and technical expertise," said Everett Fire Chief Joe Hickey.
Crews dismantling former Exxon facility
The crews had been working to dismantle a former Exxon Mobil facility where tankers used to come in and offload. The work is in phase one of a yearslong, multi-million-dollar renovation to the waterfront.
"We are devastated to learn that two individuals from a subcontractor have died following a horrific accident at one of our job sites. We are actively coordinating with all relevant public safety officials to understand why and how this happened," said Charter, the contractor overseeing the work, in a statement.
"It was a very unfortunate accident, our hearts go out, of course, to their families and those that work with them, that know them very well," said DeMaria. "It's a tragic scene."
Work paused at Everett site
Everett Landco, which owns the site, said work has stopped in the area after the fatal incident.
"We are working closely with public safety officials and the contractors performing the work to gather information and understand what happened," the company said in a statement. "All work at the marine dock has been paused while we ensure the area is safe for everyone on site."
The deaths are being investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney's office, Everett and state police, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Everett Police Chief Paul Strong said another crane will likely have to be brought in to remove the damaged crane so it can be investigated. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified.

At least 22 killed as crane collapses on train in Thailand
Crane was working on a high-speed rail project when it collapsed and hit the passing train, causing it to derail and briefly catch fire
At least 22 people in Thailand have been killed and scores injured after a crane collapsed onto a passenger train, derailing it on Wednesday, officials said.
Footage from the scene verified by Agence France-Presse showed the crane’s broken structure resting on giant concrete pillars, with smoke rising from the wreckage of the train below.
Rescuers worked to extract passengers from the tilted carriages in Nakhon Ratchasima province, north-east of the capital, Bangkok.
“At around 9am, I heard a loud noise, like something sliding down from above, followed by two explosions,” said local resident Mitr Intrpanya, 54, who was at the scene. “When I went to see what had happened, I found the crane sitting on a passenger train with three carriages.
“The metal from the crane appeared to strike the middle of the second carriage, slicing it in half.”
Thatchapon Chinnawong, the district police chief, said 22 people had been confirmed dead and 80 more were injured.
“We are now asking the hospital to say how many people are in critical condition,” Thatchapon said.
The accident happened at a construction site that is part of a $5.4bn project backed by Beijing to build a high-speed rail network in Thailand.
“A crane collapsed onto a train causing it to derail and catch fire,” the Nakhon Ratchasima provincial public relations department said in a statement.
Live footage aired by local media showed rescue workers rushing to the scene, with a brightly coloured train derailed on its side as smoke billowed from the debris.
Thatchapon said authorities were pausing the rescue operation due to “chemical leakage” at the scene.
The department said the train was travelling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province.
The transport minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, said 195 people were onboard.Authorities are trying to identify the deceased. He ordered officials to determine the cause of the accident, according to a statement.
Thailand has around 5,000km (3,107 miles) of railway but the run-down network has long driven people to favour travel by road.
Upon completion of the 600km high-speed railway, Chinese-made trains will run from Bangkok to Nong Khai, on the Mekong river border with Laos, at up to 250 km/h.
Industrial and construction site accidents have long been common in Thailand, where lax enforcement of safety regulations often leads to deadly incidents.

Bangkok, Thailand — A tower crane collapsed at Asoke intersection this morning (Feb. 7) seriously injuring 2 Myanmar workers and narrowly missed pedestrians and some shops with employees joining those strolling by in fleeing in panic, Amarin TV said this afternoon.
A surveillance camera clip showed that the crane’s arm had snapped causing the structure to collapse at the construction site where a religious building plus a 100-car parking lot covering an area of 3,248 square metres is being built.
Parts of the crane, including its signal lights, fell on nearby shops and the road.
A huge crane at the construction of a high-speed rail bridge fell on a Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani train just as it was passing Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) on Jan. 14 killing 30 people.
The very next day a construction crane fell on Rama II Road crushing 2 vehicles with there being one fatality.
