Japan: A new island appears in the Ogasawara Islands - November 2013
Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)
"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. " ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Violent Eruptions Continue at Sumatra's Sinabung Volcano (Feb 10)
Huge columns of smoke hung over Mount Sinabung and the surrounding area, including an elementary school where children played in the shadow of the towering volcanic cloud.
Activity levels have increased in the past week, with Sinabung shooting hot ash clouds into the sky dozens of times, according to the local volcano monitoring agency.
Despite the eruptions, local villagers continue their precarious existence.
The children were playing at a school in Neman Teran district, although officials say it is safe as the site is outside a four-kilometre (2.5-mile) danger zone around the crater where no one is supposed to set foot.
"It's safe for the school to be used," insisted local disaster agency chief Nata Nail.
Farmers continue tending to their crops and people in local towns put on masks to go shopping as ash rains down from the sky.
Sinabung roared back to life in 2010 for the first time in 400 years. After another period of inactivity it erupted once more in 2013, and has remained highly active since.

India's only live volcano in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands erupts back to life after being dormant for over 150 years
Photo Global Volcanism Program - Smithsonian
India's only live volcano in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands which had started showing activity in the year 1991 after being dormant for over 150 years has once again started spewing ash, the researchers at Goa based National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) said today.
"The only live volcano in the Andaman and Nicobar islands is erupting once again.
The Barren Island volcano, located 140-km north-east of Port Blair, dormant for more than 150 years started erupting in 1991 and has since then shown intermittent activity," CSIR-NIO said in a statement here.
A team of scientists led by Abhay Mudholkar, from CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO) in Goa reported that the volcano is active and spewing smoke and lava once again.
"On the afternoon of January 23, 2017, the scientific team on board CSIR-NIO's research ship R V Sindhu Sankalp were busy collecting sea floor samples in the Andaman Basin near the Barren volcano when it suddenly started spewing ash," the NIO has said.
"The team moved about one mile from the volcano and began closely observing it.
It was erupting in small episodes lasting about five to ten minutes," said the release.
During the daytime only ash clouds were observed. However, after sundown, the team observed red lava fountains spewing from the crater into the atmosphere and hot lava flows streaming down the slopes of the volcano, it said.
NIO has said the volcano was revisited in the early hours of January 26, 2017 again during the second leg of the cruise led by B Nagender Nath, it said, adding the team witnessed the continuation of spurts of blasts and smoke.
"They have sampled the sediments and water in the vicinity of the volcano and recovered coal-like black pyroclastic material representing proximal volcanic ejecta.
Clouds were seen at the crater mouth where the smoke was bellowing out in otherwise clear sky," the researchers said.
These samples will help in deciphering the nature of the present and past volcanic activity in the region.

Kamchatka's Kambalny Volcano Reawakens After 500-Year Slumber (Mar 25)
The last confirmed eruption of the volcano took place more than 500 years ago, around 1350 AD dated by radiometric studies. An alleged eruption around 200 years ago cited in the press is likely a false information or from another volcano.
The ash has risen to a height of 7,000 meters above sea level and traveled a distance of 800 km in a south-westerly direction.
Kambalny volcano (Kambalnaya Sopka) is located in the South Kamchatka volcanic zone in the south of the Kambalny volcanic ridge, southwest of the Kurilsky lake, in the sources of the Kambalnaya River.
The nearest settlement is Ozernovsky in Ust-Bolsheretsky district, some 77 km from Kambalny.
The eruption of the Kambalny volcano in southern Kamchatka on Saturday has surprised scientists of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) of the Russian Academy of Scientists.
"KVERT’s specialists since 1993 have been monitoring both by satellite and visual methods the volcanic activities and nothing pointed to a possible eruption of the Kambalny," KVERT’s head Olga Girina told TASS on March 25.
"It is a pure surprise for us." "We continue the monitoring and will analyze possible threats as data come in," she added.

Volcanic unrest: Cleveland volcano (USA) explodes and underwater volcano about 400 km south of Tokyo, Japan could erupt soon
Meanwhile, the volcanic unrest continues…
Cleveland volcano (USA) exploded on March 25, 2017 and an underwater volcano about 400 km south of Tokyo, Japan could erupt soon.
After Bogoslof, now the Cleveland Volcano exploded in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands
After Bogoslof since mid-December 2016, another volcano in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands is showing signs of unrest. On Friday, the Alaska Volcano Observatory detected a small explosion at Cleveland Volcano.
Geologists say the event at 8:15 a.m. did not last long and was similar to or smaller than other explosions at Cleveland Volcano.
Geologists say any ash cloud generated probably dissipated and was not above 20,000 feet, where it could threaten airliners traveling between Asia and North America.
Alert to ships in Japan as an underwater volcano about 400 km south of Tokyo could erupt soon
The Meteorological Agency on Friday warned that an underwater volcano about 400 km south of Tokyo could erupt soon. An alert to ships has been issued by the Coast Guard.
Coast guard aircraft found that the color of the ocean surface recently changed apparently due to volcanic activity in the Beyonesu Rocks about 65 km south-southeast of Aogashima Island.
But an eruption is unlikely to seriously affect any of the inhabited islands, including Aogashima. If the eruption occurs around the Beyonesu Rocks, it will be the first since 1970, where a change of color in the ocean was last observed in 1988. In 1952, an eruption in the area killed 31 crew members of a coast guard ship.

Continuous Activity at Costa Rica's Poás Volcano Culminates with Powerful Explosion (Apr 22)
Video 1
Video 2
48 hours of continuous eruptive activity at Poás Volcano were marked on Saturday at 10:12 p.m. with a massive explosion that launched glowing bombs over the entire sector of the active crater.
In what appear to be the strongest eruption in the current ongoing crisis thus far, the presence of large amounts of incandescent material suggests that magma continues to rise towards the surface.
People in nearby towns such as Alajuela reported strong sulfur smells and ash falls that caused headaches, burning eyes, and respiration irritation.
Earlier on the same day, at 4:03 p.m. local time, another explosion occurred at Poás, but the height of the eruption column was not observed due to bad visibility.
The peak of activity began on April 20 at 10 p.m. with an increase in the evaporation and emission of gases in the area where the volcanic dome used to be.
The emission of solid material and the eruptions increased on April 21 and during the night hours the volcano expelled ash aside from the vapors as well as rocks at high temperature.
The incandescent material has temperatures of more than 800 degrees Celsius (1472 Fahrenheit), when they fall again they form a cone that has been changing its shape. The volcano also emits a loud sound similar to that of a plane turbine.
Experts estimate that the temperature of the Laguna Caliente lake could be near the 80 degrees Celsius at this point.
Residents of San José, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago are breathing high levels of sulfur, carbon dioxide and occasionally ash particles, that can have a negative effect on health.
The air quality monitoring station located in Hatillo, registered in average a concentration of carbon dioxide of 81 parts per billion (ppb), with a maximum peak of 99.1 ppb, which exceeds the WHO limits of 75 ppb.
According to Jorge Herrera, coordinator of the environmental laboratory of the National University, the emissions of gas by the Poás Volcano is affecting the quality of the air in the metropolitan area which was already compromised with the eruptions of the Turrialba Volcano.
The high levels of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide measured near the crater of the volcano are interpreted by scientists as a sign of fresh magma near the surface.
The combination of these gases in the air and heavy rains like the ones experienced in the last few days create what is known as acid rain, which causes damage in crops, vegetation, and even metallic structures.

CARIBBEAN: Warnings issued as volcano near Grenada becomes restless
Volcano Kick ’em Jenny
April 30, 2017
https://www.stlucianewsonline.com/caribbean-warnings-issued-as-volc...
CMC – The National Disaster Management Agency is monitoring an increase in activities taking place at Kick ’em Jenny, the region’s only submarine volcano located between Grenada and the Grenadine island of Carriacou.
In a release early Sunday, the disaster agency said it has been advised of the increase in activity by the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI).
“The UWI/SRC recorded a high amplitude signal, lasting about 25 seconds, on one of the Grenada stations. The signal was also recorded on a station in Montserrat. This signal follows an increase in the number of background events associated with the Kick-’em-Jenny volcano,” said the release which confirmed that persons in the St Patrick’s area have reported feeling tremors.”
As a result, the alert level is now on yellow and sea users and ships have been warned to stay away from vicinity of the submarine volcano.
“In light of the ongoing we are advising all sea users that the 5km (3.1 miles) exclusion zone of Kick ’em Jenny be strictly observed. The SRC has advised that heightened alert is necessary for the exclusion zone,” the release added.
A yellow alert means the volcano is restless; seismicity and/or fumarolic activity are above the historical level or other unusual activity has been observed or can be expected without warning.

New Eruption at Poas Volcano Reported This Tuesday Morning
June 6, 2017, http://news.co.cr/new-eruption-poas-volcano-reported-tuesday-mornin...
The National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI) reported an eruption that reached 1,000 meters above the crater, 3,708 meters above sea level (12.162,24 ft.), began at 8:50 a.m. local time this Tuesday and was still in progress at 10:05 a.m.
This past Friday, June 2 the Poás Volcano registered constant activity
with small size eruptions and red columns of gases and ash, on Saturday some activity continued but Sunday and Monday there were no new eruptions although there was an intense column of steam and gases emanating from the crater.
The Poás Volcano has experienced several changes of its structure since the eruptions began back in April, with new cones forming, the dome almost completely destroyed,
and the water of the lake drying fast, new small fumaroles have also appeared and incandescent materials can be seen in certain areas at night time.
As of now there have not been reports of ash fall in the nearby communities; however the wind direction is to the west which means it could reach the community of Bajos del Toro.
Dr. Maarten de Moor from OVSICORI is in the area and was able to capture the image included with this article.

23 explosions at Fuego volcano create strong lahars disrupting communication between communities in Guatemala
The heavy rains falling on Santiaguito and Fuego volcanoes created lahars which disrupted the communiation between communities living close to the volcanoes.
On June 8, 2017, the Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala erupted 23 times (13 small, 6 moderate and 4 strong). According to local observers, the Fuego produced one of the strongest explosion of recent years.
The 4 powerful explosions generated plumes of gray color rising up to 4,400-4,500 m. asl, before dispersing to the west and north.
Incandescent pulses of 150 m. Over the crater caused moderate to strong avalanches in the Santa Teresa, Taniluya, Ceniza and Trinidad barrancas.
Lahars
Due to heavy rains lahars are descending in different ‘barrancas’ along the slope of the Fuego and the Santiaguito volcanoes.
Lahars hit the slopes of the Fuego volcano in the barranca Santa Teresa, dragging 1 to 3 meters in diameter rocks, trunks and complete trees, and in the barrancas Trinidad as well as Cenizas, transporting smaller blocks disrupting intercommunity communications.
Concerning the Santiaguito volcano, lahars carring trunks and blocks measuring 1 to 2 meters in diameter have engulfed the Rio Cabello de Angel, a tributary of the Rio Nima and San Isidro, and the Rio Samala

It's raining ash - volcano eruption forces children to stay indoors in Kluchi village
http://siberiantimes.com/other/others/news/its-raining-ash-volcano-...
Residents were issued with masks and gauze bandages after the (June 14) @ 4.23am eruption of Shiveluch volcano some 50 kilometres away.
Some 330 grams of ash were registered per one square metre in the village.
The ash fall was 3mm thick in places.
The eruption sent ash some 12 km above sea level.
'We have enough gauze masks, we always have plenty of them in storage and at pharmacies,' said Alexander Voznikov, head of the village council.
There are no complaints from citizens, the situation is under control.
'This is nothing new for villagers here, we are used to be living next to two large volcanoes.'
Resident Viktoria said: 'We're cleaning our house with a hose. A lot of ashes fell, the whole yard is grey.
'We can't let our poor dog outside. Children are sitting at home, of course.
'The particles of ash are small. They crunch on the teeth and sticks to our faces, it's a terrible feeling.'
Lyudmila, who has lived in Kluchi for ten years, said: 'People are sneezing. In the morning they wore hoodies, masks and carried umbrellas.
'Windows are shut; everything is covered with ash - gardens, grass.
Clouds of ash might reach villages of Atlasovo, Milkovo, Ust-Kamchatsk, and Ivashka, warned experts.
Kluchi village is located 560 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, capital of Kamchatka region in the Russian Far East.
Around 5,700 people are living in the village.
Shiveluch is the northernmost volcano in Kamchatka, some 3,283 metres above sea level and 70,000 years old.

Major explosive eruption of Bezymianny volcano, ash to 12.2 km (40 000 ft) a.s.l.
June 16, 2017
A major explosive eruption took place at Russia's Bezymianny volcano at 04:53 UTC on Friday, June 16, 2017. By 05:10 UTC, ash plume from the eruption reached an altitude of 12.2 km (40 000 feet) above sea level and a distance of 40 km (25 miles) NE of the volcano, according to the Tokyo VAAC. This is the strongest eruption of this volcano since September 2012.
At 05:43 UTC, KVERT said they raised the Aviation Color Code from Orange to Red. "Ash cloud as big as 28 x 25 km (17.4 x 15.5 miles) drifts to the northeast of the volcano," the Observatory said, adding that ash explosions up to 10 - 15 km (32 800 - 49 200 feet) a.s.l. could occur at any time. "Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
This is the strongest eruption of Bezymianny volcano since September 1/2, 2012. It comes just two days after a powerful eruption of nearby Sheveluch volcano ejected ash to an altitude 12 km (39 360 feet) a.s.l. Sheveluch is located 90 km (56 miles) NE of Bezymianny.
The last significant eruption of Bezymianny volcano, although nowhere near today's, took place on March 9, 2017. Based on webcam observations, an ash plume rose to altitudes of 6 - 7 km (20 000 - 23 000 feet) a.s.l. and drifted 20 km (12.4 miles) northeast. The Aviation Color Code was raised from Yellow to Orange. About 30 minutes later, an ash plume rose to altitudes of 7 - 8 km (23 000 - 26 200 feet) a.s.l. and drifted 60 km (37 miles) northwest. Later that day a 274-km-long (170 miles) ash plume identified in satellite images drifted NW at altitudes of 4 - 4.5 km (13 100 - 14 800 feet) a.s.l.; the majority of the leading part of the plume contained a significant amount of ash. A lava flow traveled down the NW part of the lava dome.
Bezymianny is one the most active volcanoes in the world. In 1955, for the first time in history, it started to erupt, and after six months it produced a catastrophic eruption with the total volume of eruptive products over 3 km3.
The lava dome began to grow in the explosive caldera immediately after the catastrophe and still continues. At least 44 Vulcanian-type strong explosive eruptions of Bezymianny occurred between 1965 - 2012.
Geological summary
Prior to its noted 1955-56 eruption, Bezymianny had been considered extinct. The modern volcano, much smaller in size than its massive neighbors Kamen and Kliuchevskoi, was formed about 4700 years ago over a late-Pleistocene lava-dome complex and an ancestral edifice built about 11000 - 7000 years ago. Three periods of intensified activity have occurred during the past 3000 years.

Rincón de la Vieja volcano eruption blasts over 2000 meters in Costa Rica
https://www.sott.net/article/354568-Rincon-de-la-Vieja-volcano-erup...
The National University's Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI), reported an eruption at the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano in Guanacaste at 2:56 p.m. this Friday, June 23, where the column reached 2000 meters above the crater and 3,916 meters above sea level, (12844.48 ft).
According to the report by OVSICORI, the eruption registered is phreatomagmatic, which means it results from the interaction between magma and water. This type of eruptions usually contains juvenile magmatic clasts.
The activity was short, only lasting one minute, There are no reports of ash-fall for the time being, but the explosive and violent eruption caused once again a small pyroclastic flow, meaning a current of hot gas and volcanic matter such as rocks that heads down the north slope of the volcano forming a lahar. The lahars that form as a product of eruptions in this volcano usually affect the rivers Pénjamo, Azul and Quebrada Sufrosa.
Volcanologists recommend staying away from these rivers since the water level can increase suddenly.

Sileri crater at the Dieng Plateau volcano Indonesia eruption as a helicopter carrying eight people crashes during evacuations
Photoibtimes.co.uk
A helicopter carrying eight people crashed Sunday while on the way to help with evacuations near a volcano that erupted on the main Indonesian island of Java.
Officials didn't know the fate of the people on board, but villagers said they found two bodies at the crash site.
The eruption of the volcano, located in a popular tourist area, injured at least 10 people.
The helicopter from the National Search and Rescue Agency was carrying four crewmen and four rescuers when it crashed near Candiroto village in Central Java province's Temanggung district, Heronimus Guru, the agency's deputy operations chief, told KompasTV.
Guru did not know the fates of those on board, but villagers told the TV station that they found the bodies of two people.

Earlier Sunday, Sileri Crater at Dieng Plateau spewed cold lava, mud and ash as high as 50 meters (164 feet) into the sky when it erupted, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
He said the sudden eruption occurred at around 11:30 a.m., when there were about 17 visitors around the crater.
Ten people were injured and were treated at a hospital.
Soldiers and police officers were dispatched to the scene, while local residents and visitors were asked to evacuate the area in case of further eruptions, Nugroho said.
Sileri is the most active and dangerous among some 10 craters at Dieng Plateau.
Its most recent eruption was in 2009, when it unleashed volcanic materials up to 200 meters (656 feet) high and triggered the creation of three new craters.
Dieng Plateau, located in the Central Java district of Banjarnegara, is a popular tourist attraction because of its cool climate and ninth-century Hindu temples.
It sits about 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) above sea level.
Some 142 people were reportedly asphyxiated in 1979 when the volcano spewed gases.

Spewed an ash cloud up to 30,000 feet
An Alaskan volcano that has erupted several times since last year spewed an ash cloud up to 30,000 feet, leading to an aviation warning.
The Bogoslof volcano erupted Saturday (July 8), sending ash over the Aleutians Islands, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) said.
It "remains at a heightened state of unrest and in an unpredictable condition, and additional explosions producing high-altitude volcanic clouds could occur at any time," the observatory said.
The volcano sits under the flight path of many flights from Asia to North America and its ash cloud could adversely affect aircraft.
"Ash and aircraft do not mix, as volcanic ash is abrasive, melts at jet engine temperatures, and can cause engine failure," the United States Geological Survey says.
The aviation color code remains at red..."

Glacier flood confirmed from Mýrdalsjökull glacier ICELND
July 28, 2017
http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/?p=6977
It was confirmed at around 22:00 UTC that a small glacier flood has now started from Mýrdalsjökull glacier (Katla volcano). At the moment the glacier flood is small. It is unclear if this glacier flood is going to remain small and run it course as it is or if it is going to increase in next few hours.
Reports have been coming of strong sulphur smell in the area of Múlakvísl on Mýrdalssand area (desert area south of Mýrdalsjökull glacier).
Civil protection authority in Iceland have closed down few tourist roads and limited access to certain areas for time being due to this glacier flood. I strongly recommend that people follow those closers since change can happen in Katla volcano without warning and the closer people are to the volcano the less time they have to get away from it if an eruption starts.

Powerful Eruption at Sumatra's Sinabung Volcano (Aug 2)
Mt Sinabung blasted volcanic ash as high as 4.2 kilometers (2.6 miles) on Wednesday, one of its biggest eruptions in the past several months of high activity.
Isya Nurrahmat Dana, an official at a volcano monitoring post in North Sumatra province, said at least 19 eruptions followed by lava flows were recorded by midday Wednesday.
Hot ash tumbled down the mountain's slopes as far as 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) east and southeast into the Labortus River, inside the already devastated and evacuated zone around Sinabung.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said thousands of people in 10 villages were directly affected by ash fall from the latest eruption.
He warned villagers to stay out of a danger zone that extends as far as 7 kilometers (4.4 miles) from the peak.

2 Powerful Eruptions at Sheveluch and Bogoslov Volcanoes (Aug 8)
At 21:20 UTC, the front of the 220 km (137 miles) long ash cloud was located about 360 km (224 miles) SSE of the volcano.
At 03:17 UTC on August 9, KVERT reported that explosive eruption of the volcano was ending, adding that a large ash cloud continues to drift from the volcano. The front was stretching out to the west and east. At 02:30 UTC, its western edge was about 490 km (305 miles) from the volcano, while the eastern edge was about 600 km (373 miles).
The explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues, the agency said and warned that ash explosions up to 10 - 15 km (32 800 - 49 200 feet) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
On August 7, another strong explosive eruption occurred at Bogoslov volcano, generating an ash plume that rose to estimated 32,000 ft (10 km) altitude.
The eruption began at about 18:00 UTC (10:00 AKDT local time) and was observed by a pilot. It lasted approximately 3 hours. The volcano's Aviation Color Code was again raised to RED.

Geothermal Heat Forms Giant Holes in Glacier (September 4, 2017)
Over 400 meter (1312 feet) wide holes [seen above in view from aircraft] have formed in Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest glacier. This is near the Bárðarbunga area, which had a volcanic eruption between 2014 and 2015.
According to geologist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, the entire Bárðabunga landscape changed after the eruption, with increased geothermal heat that has melted away a hundred meters of thick, glacial ice, forming these calderas.
In fact, this marks the first time in hundreds or even thousands of years that the ground beneath the glacier can be seen.
Magnús Tumi says the area needs to be carefully watched in order to watch out for any more calderas that might trigger a glacial outburst flood.

Mexico suffers volcano eruption same day as deadly quake
http://nypost.com/2017/09/20/volcano-also-erupted-in-mexico-during-...
As if the deadly earthquake in Mexico weren’t enough, a volcano erupted amid the violent tremors.
Popocatepetl — about 45 miles southeast of quake-ravaged Mexico City and some 30 miles from the temblor’s epicenter — belched ash and gas as the 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked the country’s central region.
The county’s volcano-monitoring system registered one explosion and 256 “low-intensity exhalations” between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings but said none of the activity can be attributed to the earthquake, according to Mexico’s National Center for Prevention of Disasters.
A church in Atzitzihuacan at the foot of the mountain collapsed during the quake and eruption, killing 15 worshippers as they celebrated Mass inside.
Pope Francis said he was praying for victims in the majority-Catholic country.
“In this moment of pain, I want to express my closeness and prayers to all the beloved Mexican people,” he said.
The 17,700-foot Popocatepetl has been particularly active this summer and also blew its top amid the Aug. 21 solar eclipse.

Vanuatu Orders Evacuation of Island with Rumbling Volcano
WELLINGTON, New Zealand—Vanuatu officials on Thursday ordered the complete evacuation of an island in the Pacific archipelago where a rumbling, belching volcano is threatening to blow.
Boats were soon to begin ferrying residents off Ambae island, which is home to about 11,000 people, in a process expected to take about a week. The Manaro volcano has been increasingly active for a week or more, raising fears of a major eruption.
Government spokesman Hilaire Bule said ministers decided they couldn’t risk people’s lives and so ordered the compulsory evacuation. Previously, people had been evacuated to other areas on the island itself.
Ambae resident Lilian Garae said she could see “smoke coming out from the hills” and hear regular booming noises from the volcano. She said she was waiting to hear when she might have to leave her home and where she might be sent.
Ambae is about 400 square kilometers (154 square miles), making it a little larger than the city of Detroit. It is one of about 65 inhabited islands in the Pacific nation about one-quarter of the way from Australia to Hawaii.
The activity measure of the volcano was raised last weekend to Level 4, on a scale in which Level 5 represents a major eruption, and an emergency was declared Monday.
New Zealand’s military flew a plane over the volcano on Tuesday, and said huge columns of smoke, ash and volcanic rocks were billowing from the crater.
Some residents have left the island voluntarily. For them, it’s a waiting game to see whether the volcano erupts or returns to normal activity that’s not a threat. Officials say they have no real way of predicting what the volcano will do next and that evacuees will just have to wait it out.
Bule said the evacuation will be carried out by boat and continue through Oct. 6. He said residents will be moved onto nearby islands. Officials are setting up two sites on Pentecost Island, he said, where evacuees will be housed in government buildings or in temporary camp sites.
Ambae island has long been volcanically active. A previous eruption in 2005 forced about 3,300 people to temporarily leave their homes and relocate elsewhere on the island, but didn’t lead to an evacuation of the island itself.
Dickinson Tevi, a spokesman for the Vanuatu Red Cross Society, said the relief agency has been shipping water and shelter equipment to Ambae island.
“People are quite afraid with the sound of rumbling going on,” he said. “They are very uncertain and afraid.”
Bule said the government had allocated 200 million vatu ($1.9 million) toward the evacuation effort and was deploying 60 police officers to help people leave and to ensure there was no looting.
“We’ve prepared for cyclones by putting evacuation centers on the island but we are not ready for a volcanic eruption,” Bule said. “The government has to put a policy in place to cater for this in the future.”
Vanuatu’s Meteorology and Geohazards Department has previously warned that people nearest to the volcano face the biggest risk from airborne rocks and volcanic gas and that acid rain could damage crops across a broader area.
Vanuatu is home to about 280,000 people and is prone to natural disasters, with a half-dozen active volcanoes as well as regular cyclones and earthquakes. It sits on the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanoes are common.

Increased Conductivity Could Mean Glacial Outburst Flood
http://icelandreview.com/news/2017/11/08/increased-conductivity-cou...
Geologists say it is possible a glacial outburst flood is beginning in Jökulsá á fjöllum river, RÚV reports. There are no signs of an eruption, though it cannot be ruled out.
According to the Icelandic Met Office, increased conductivity has been measured in the river in the last two weeks. At one location, Upptyppingar, the value measured was double the usual for this time of year.
The source of the increased conductivity is unknown, but is it likely caused by a drainage of geothermal water from the Vatnajökull glacier, where the river’s source is located.
Experts planned to fly over the area to assess the situation this morning, but the trip was called off due to unfavourable weather. Specialists will continue to monitor automated meters in the area closely.

Bali travel chaos as airlines warn ash cloud from Mount Agung could cancel scores of flights – as villagers flee the erupting volcano
The eruption of Bali's Mount Agung volcano overnight could cause flight disruptions if ash makes its way into the airspace.
The volcano began spewing grey ash and gas 700m above peak at 5:05pm local time, but authorities say its alert level remains unchanged.
All airlines said on Wednesday morning flights in and out of Bali are operating as scheduled, but Jetstar Airways claims that could change if the smoke continues to billow.
With Schoolies underway, thousands of students have flocked to Indonesia or are expected to fly this week.
The eruption has forced about 29,000 evacuees into emergency shelters (pictured)
'We are continuing to closely monitor volcanic activity at Mount Agung in Bali, Indonesia after a minor eruption earlier today,' the airline said in a release.
'All Jetstar flights to and from Bali are currently operating as scheduled.'
'Should any volcanic ash make its way into in Bali airspace tomorrow, however, this could result in flight disruptions.'
Virgin Australia said it is also monitoring the volcano's activity but plans to operate as 'scheduled, unless otherwise advised.'
'We encourage guests booked via travel agents or third parties to ensure Virgin Australia has your mobile number, should we need to contact you in the event of any changes,' the airline said.
'Guests with travel insurance are also encouraged to check with their insurer about their individual circumstances.'
The Department of Foreign Trade is advising anyone travelling to Bali to always 'exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia'.
Officials estimated recent fears over Mount Agung's eruption have cost Bali at least $110 million in lost tourism and productivity, as many local residents moved to shelters.
Indonesia is home to around 130 volcanoes due to its position on the "Ring of Fire", a belt of tectonic plate boundaries circling the Pacific Ocean where frequent seismic activity occurs.
In 2010 Mount Merapi, considered one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in the world, erupted and killed more than 300 people and forced 280,000 people to flee.
Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island, which is currently at its highest alert level, has been active since 2013.
Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency has called on the public to remain calm, and Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport remains open.
The eruption was considered small although the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said the danger zone around the volcano was 'dynamic' and could change at any time.
They advise people to stay out of the exclusion zone, which remains unchanged, and extends 7.5km from the volcano.
About 29,000 evacuees are currently living in shelters — that's far less than the 150,000 people who fled their homes last month in fear the volcano would erupt.
The Australian government advises all Australian tourists in Bali to monitor local media, follow instructions from local authorities and ensure they have travel insurance.
The alert level remains at three after it was downgraded from the maximum level of four on October 29.
Agung has been rumbling intermittently since August.
Officials estimated recent fears over Mount Agung's eruption have cost Bali at least $110 million in lost tourism and productivity, as many local residents moved to shelters.

Bali's Agung Volcano Erupts, Closing Airports and Forcing 100,000 to Evacuate (Dec 2)
The continuous ash emission is accompanied by explosive eruptions, with sounds heard up to 12 km (7.4 miles) from the summit.
Around 100,000 residents living near erupting Agung volcano in Bali, Indonesia have been told to evacuate.
Layers of ash coated cars, roofs and roads in an area southeast of the crater. Children wore masks to walk to school.
Within hours the after the second phreatic eruption within a week started, Agung shifted into magmatic phase. Lahars were observed descending down the mountain, prompting authorities to raise the alert level to 4 (highest).
The danger zone is now expanded to all areas within a radius of 8 km (5 miles) from the crater and as far as 10 km (6.2 miles) to the north-northeast and southeast-south-southwest.
According to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesperson for the National Board for Disaster Management, "some 40,000 have been evacuated but a further 60,000 also need to move. There are those who haven’t evacuated because their farm animals haven’t been evacuated yet and those who feel they are safe because their area hasn't been affected during 1963/64 eruption," Sutopo said, adding that security personnel were trying to persuade people to leave but they could be evacuated by force. Bali governor Made Mangku Pastika later said that 150,000 could be called on to evacuate.
At least 445 flights at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali's main airport, were canceled for 24 hours starting 00:15 UTC, November 27 (07:15 local time), stranding some 59,000 domestic and international passengers.
The danger zone is dynamic and continuously evaluated, and can be changed at any time following the most recent observational data, BNPB said.
The lingering volcanic ash cloud has forced the cancellation of several flights from Bali, keeping thousands of holiday-makers stranded, and all flights to the island from Australia have been cancelled by Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar.
More than 7400 passengers have been flown back home by Jetstar, Virgin and Qantas since Denpasar Airport reopened on November 29 after the ash cloud from Mount Agung’s eruption briefly cleared.
But more than 2000 people will remain at the popular holiday destination after conditions started to deteriorate on December 2 — nearly a week since the volcano’s initial eruption.

Kadovar Volcano Awakens in PNG, First Eruption in Known History (Jan 5)
Kadovar started erupting around 12:00 local time Friday, January 5, 2018 (02:00 UTC), prompting authorities to send out boats to evacuate more than 500 people living on Kadovar Island. The boats were sent from Kopar, the nearest island, some 30-minutes boat ride from Kadovar.
According to Loop PNG, immediately after sending boats to Kadovar, Kopar councilor Tom Kelly said that thick clouds can be seen rising from the island. "The clouds are darker and increasing at an alarming rate," Kelly said.
Places like Kairuru Island, Mt Uru in Yangoru and Woginara in the West coast of Wewak District are under thick clouds and dust, Loop PNG reported 00:53 UTC, January 6. Kairuru is not visible from Wewak and Mushu is covered by dust, it said.
In a Loop PNG article published 08:24 UTC, January 6, Ricky Wobar, Wewak District Administrator, said that the situation at Kadovar Island has worsened.
The statement was made after an overflight confirmed lava coming out of the once dormant volcano.
"At least 50 to 60 percent of the island is covered in lava," he said.
Wobar said they saw no evidence of inhabitants on the island, adding that he hopes all of them have been evacuated. The National Disaster and Emergency Services were called in to respond at the earliest tomorrow.
According to Darwin VAAC, the volcanic emission was clearly visible on Himawari-8 imagery acquired 02:30 UTC today. The volcanic ash cloud was reaching an altitude of 2.1 km (7 000 feet) above sea level.

Volcanoes are rumbling again: Popocatepetl (Mexico), Shiveluch (Russia), Agung (Indonesia), Sinabung (Indonesia), Ebeko (Russia), Kadovar (PNG), seismic unrest at Tenorio, Irazu and Miravalles volcanoes (Costa Rica)
Jan 12, 2018
After a quiet start in 2018, volcanoes are rumbling again around the world, with strong volcanic activity recorded in Russia (Shivelush and Ebeko), in Indonesia (Agung and Sinabung) and a seismic unrest measured below Tenorio, Irazu and Miravalles volcanoes 5 minutes after the M7.6 (+2 = ~ M9.6) earthquake hit Honduras.

Philippines Mt. Mayon Volcano Erupts, Over 34,000 Evacuated (Jan 20)
The current exclusion zone includes a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) that extends in a 6-kilometer (3.7 km) radius around the volcano and an Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) that extends 7 km (4.3 miles) on the southern flanks of the volcano, due to higher hazard in this area.
Lava flows were first observed on the southern slopes on January 14, followed by two lava collapse events producing rockfalls and pyroclastic density currents as well as degassing events which sent ash plumes SW and WSW of the volcano on January 15.
On January 18, twenty-four rockfall events and one volcanic earthquake were recorded by Mayon's seismic monitoring network.
Rockfall events were generated by the collapsing lava front and margins of the advancing lava flow on the Miisi Gully and by shedding from the summit dome onto the Bonga Gully. The Miisi lava flow has advanced to approximately 3 km (1.8 miles) from the summit crater well within the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). Ash clouds were lofted from the rockfall events as well as from the persistent disintegration of lava on the advancing front of the Miisi lava flow before drifting to the southwest.
Sulfur dioxide gas emission was measured at an average of 1,478 tonnes/day on January 18, 2018.
Similar activity was observed on January 19. Seismic network registered 5 rockfall events and the Missi lava flow was still 3 km from the summit crater.
Sulfur dioxide gas emission was measured at an average of 1,131 tonnes/day on January 19, 2018. Electronic tilt measurements indicate a sustained swelling or inflation of the edifice since November 2017, consistent with pressurization by magmatic intrusion.
Alert Level 3 remains in effect, which means that the volcano is still in a relatively high level of unrest and a hazardous eruption is still possible within weeks or even days.
The public is strongly advised to be vigilant and desist from entering the 6 kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southern flanks due to the danger of rockfalls, landslides and sudden explosions or dome collapse that may generate hazardous volcanic flows.
PHIVOLCS is also advising increased vigilance against pyroclastic density currents, lahars and sediment-laden streamflows along channels draining the edifice.
Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

MAEBASHI, GUNMA PREF. – A Self-Defense Forces member died and 11 other people were injured after a volcano erupted near a ski resort in Gunma Prefecture on Tuesday morning, spewing cinders and possibly causing an avalanche.
Stones from the eruption of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane hit a gondola lift and injured at least four people on board with shattered glass, according to local rescuers. The 9:59 a.m. eruption of the 2,171-meter mountain is the first since 1983, according to the Meteorological Agency.
The stones also crashed through the roof of a rest house where about 100 people had evacuated, the rescuers said.
Video footage from the top of the resort’s gondola showed skiers gliding down the slopes as black rocks plummeted from the skies and snow billowed up as they struck the ground, sometimes just missing skiers. A cloud of black smoke later drifted in.
“There was this huge boom, and a big plume of totally black smoke rose up,” one skier told NHK. “I had absolutely no idea what had happened.”
A photograph taken at the site and shown on NHK depicted a gondola with a shattered window. At least several of the injuries were due to broken glass.
“Other people appeared to be hurt by the stones, which appeared to be around 10 to 20 cm in size,” another skier told NHK. CONTINUE.....

The ‘Ring of Fire’ is on high alert. This horseshoe-shaped geological disaster area comprises over half of the world’s active volcanoes as well as subductions zones and plate movements responsible for earthquakes and, sometimes, subsequent tsunamis… Well, within the last few days, several countries situated on the ‘Ring of Fire’ such as the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, and Alaska were hit by unprecedented volcanic eruptions and powerful earthquakes. Is this increased seismic activity due to the slowing down of Earth rotation? Or is the Super Blue Moon eclipse on January 31, 2018, playing with our nerves? Nobody knows… But some impressive seismic and volcanic events are going on right now on Earth.

A Japanese volcano that appeared in a James Bond film has erupted, shooting smoke and ash thousands of feet into the sky and grounding dozens of flights.
Residents living near Shinmoedake were warned about flying rocks and pyroclastic flows - hot gas and volcanic debris that race down the slopes at high speeds, incinerating or vaporising everything in their path.
Japan's meteorological agency said the volcano, seen in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice, violently erupted violently several times, in its biggest explosion since 2011.
Grey smoke can be billowing into the sky and orange lava rising to the mouth of the crater on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu.
At the foot of the volcano, pedestrians in Kirishima city wore surgical masks or covered their noses with hand towels. Others used umbrellas to protect from falling ash, which covered cars and buildings.
About 80 flights in and out of the nearby Kagoshima airport were cancelled.
The 4,660ft volcano started having smaller eruptions last week.
The meteorological agency said the volcanic activity was expected to continue.
Japan, which sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", has 110 active volcanoes and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
An eruption of Mount Ontake in 2014 killed around 60 people.
