"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Update on the Fogo Volcano eruption off West Africa...

A rare eruption of Cape Verde volcano Pico do Fogo, its biggest in decades, caused the closure of the airport and evacuation of local residents.

A photograph posted on the local RTC TV station website showed a huge plume of smoke rising into the sky, visible from the capital Praia on a neighbouring island.

"Things could deteriorate in the coming moments, in the coming hours," prime minister Jose Maria Neves said in a statement.

"We've called on people to heed the authorities' instructions, people should abandon Cha das Caldeiras."

The main road which provides access to Chã das Caldeiras is cut because the lava coming out of the volcano was already destroyed three poles of CVTelecom.

The Cova Tina location is under heavy "rain" of fine sand.

The smell of sulfur from the eruption have also reached the city of S. Filipe.

The eruption has increased in intensity, having opened another crater in the volcano, totaling three craters.

However, even with strong smell of sulfur and dust spread through the air, some people have refused to leave their homes.

The volcano last erupted in 1995, causing minor damage.

Update on the Fogo Volcano eruption off W. Africa.

Lava Flows from Fogo Volcano Threaten Portela (Nov 25)

The northern lava flow branch has started to enter the village of Portela and today destroyed and/or damaged several buildings, including the headquarters of the Fogo Nature Park.

The village, located at the northern end of the main road inside the caldera, is at risk of being cut of by lava flows: If the main road becomes covered, only a difficult and long passage to the NE via Monte Velha remains as land evacuation route.

Local news sources and recent video footage suggest an increase in activity. Several vents have opened at the fissure on the southwestern foot of the Pico del Fogo cone. Activity at most of the vents is violently explosive with significant gas and ash emissions

For this reason, Cabo Verde Airlines has canceled all flights departing and arriving in Sao Felipe Airport on the west coast.

The SO2 gas plume from the eruption has spread to the north and already reached the northern Cape Verde islands. Authorities recommend people to drink plenty of water.

Since the beginning of the eruption, inhabitants of the Cha caldera have been using trucks and various other available vehicles to evacuate goods from the threatened area. Local media report fuel shortages which makes the situation more difficult.

Looting and equipment theft, in particular from the headquarter building of the Nature Park, which only had been opened in March this year, add to the problems.

The eruption's heaviest economic damage is probably the destruction of vinyards in the area. The lava flows threaten the storage cellar with approx. 100,000 liters of wine.

To manage the volcanic crisis, a crisis cabinet was set in place by the government.

The previous eruption of Mount Aso was in 1991

Plumes of volcanic ash caused flight cancellations and disruptions yesterday in the first eruption of a Japanese volcano in more than 22 years.

Mount Aso - situated on Kyushu island 625 miles (1,005km) south from the capital Tokyo - spewed out lava, debris and smoke while expelling columns of ash 3,280 feet (1km) into the sky, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Lava from Fogo Volcano Threatens to Engulf Nearby Villages (Nov 28)

Molten lava from Fogo volcano slid towards the town of Cha das Caldeiras on Thursday, threatening to destroy it and other nearby villages just four days after an initial eruption.

Television images showed a huge lake of steaming black lava just meters away from houses in the village of Portela. The village is close to Cha das Caldeiras, whose 1,200-strong population has been evacuated to emergency shelters.

"In the last few hours, there was an increase in volcanic activity and the lava is flowing towards Portela and this community may be completely engulfed by lava," Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves said on Thursday during a visit to Fogo.

"The potential is for the total destruction of Cha das Caldeiras, one of the most fertile regions of Cape Verde," he added, calling on international aid for the country.

The lava flows have covered approx. 400 hectars of land, including 26 hc of farmland.

A dozen of houses from the village of Portela have already been consumed; the larger part of the village, including most of its economic infrastructure (hotels, wine cellars, farm land) remain at elevated risk to follow the same fate in the next days if activity and the advance of the lava flow, now a few meters per hour, continue at similar intensity.

Most inhabitants from Portela have been evacuated, only less than 100 more still need to be.

According to news, a 3rd evacuation route has been opened to facilitate transport of people and goods.

Interesting overflight video showing the immensity of the ongoing eruption at Iceland's Bardarbunga volcanic complex. Recorded in late November.

The eruption continues with little changes as of December 3. While most of the lava now remains on top of the already emplaced lava field, more than 75 square km large, several lateral outbreaks are active as well.
The most active one, to the north, has advanced more than 450 m in a single day.

Seismic activity remains high under the volcano.

Indonesia's Gamalana Volcano Erupts Unexpectedly with Fatalities (Dec 19)

Gamlana Volcano on Ternate Island, a popular hiking destination, erupted unexpectedly Thursday evening claiming at least two lives.

Two hikers were reported missing, presumably killed, and nine others wounded, mainly from injuries suffered when falling during their escape.

Slow-moving red lava was visible at the peak of the eruption Friday and villages were blanketed with thick ash, but no evacuation orders have been issued.

An airport in Ternate, the provincial capital about30 kilometres (20 miles) from the volcano, was forced to close Friday as did schools and offices.

Explosions and ongoing ash emissions continued throughout Friday and produced ash plumes that drifted eastwards. More than 5 cm of ash covered the runway and some parked aircraft.

The Indonesian Volcanological Survey (VSI) raised the alert level of Gamalana to 3 (on a scale of 1-4).

The small island, only approx. 10 km in diameter, consists essentially of the volcano's cone above sea level and is very exposed to mud flows or pyroclastic flows that could occur during or as a result of explosive activity.

Evacuations would likely need to involve dislocation to one of the neighboring islands in case of a major eruption.

It seem that the eruption was not preceded by anything unusual, only a weak tremor signal was recorded about half an hour before, which in itself is not very unusual on any active volcano and not enough to predict an eruption.

It is not clear what the nature of this eruption is and whether it involves fresh magma or only steam-driven explosions (phreatic activity), but the observed glow on the upper flank below the summit suggest that a lava flow was active from a vent below the summit crater.

Mexican volcano spews ash 3.5 km (2.1 miles) high

The sun sets as a plume of gas, ash and steam rises from the crater of the Popocatepetl volcano, seen from the town of San Nicolas de los Ranchos, Mexico, Friday, Dec. 26, 2014. According to Mexico's Disaster Prevention Centre (CENAPRED), the exhalation, which occurred at 17:07 local time, reached a height of 3,500 meters, (11,500 ft.) but the event did not cause changes in the alert level which remains at yellow phase two, representing moderate volcanic activity. (AP Photo/Dario Lopez-Mills)

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities say the Popocatepetl volcano located just southeast of Mexico City has registered an explosion that spewed a mix of steam, gas and ashes about 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) into the air.

Mexico's National Center for Disaster Prevention says that the flare up occurred on Friday afternoon and that the amount of ash mix released was "moderate."

Popocatepetl is an active volcano, and the second tallest volcano in the country. It is located 72 kilometers (nearly 45 miles) from the capital, and close to Morelos, Puebla and Mexico states.

    Etna, SicilY - ITALY

    Etna
makes a point of honor to show up late in the year ... Sunday, an increase of seismicity and an increase in tremor marks the beginning of an eruption.
The site of the eruption probably is the new southeast crater.
According the webcams , the ash plume is very charged and fallout of ash and lapilli are reported at the beginning of the eruption on the eastern slope of Etna, in the municipalities of Giarre Riposto , Mascali , Sant'Alfio.

The VAAC of Toulouse reported in its report of 6:13 p.m., increased tremor at 17h36 and a red aviation code!

On this photo taken there two minutes, we see the arms of lava flow into the Valle del Bove arrived at about 2000m and snow, which seems about 1500. And you can also see the famous little light of Rocca Musarra!

    Communicated INGV Catania:
On the evening of December 28, 2014, there has been a short but intense eruptive episode, the first paroxysmal event of Etna after that of 2 December 2013 on the New Southeast Crater (NCSE). This episode produced fountains, lava flows and an eruption column that was pushed by strong winds to the east, leading to a fall of ash and lapilli in the villages of Milo, Fornazzo, S. Alfio and Giarre. The severe weather conditions does have so far failed to identify clearly the summit craters of Etna that produced the episode, because the summit area was constantly covered with dense clouds, conditions, that persist to this day.

A continuing eruption from Tonga’s active undersea volcano, Hunga Ha’apai, was clearly visible on the horizon northwest of Tongatapu today.

Photographed by Shane Egan from the Kanokupolu coastline, the plume of steam stood out clearly against today’s blue sky.

“It’s been puffing away like a steam train since Christmas Eve,” said Shane. “It’s Tonga’s own white Christmas.”

He said the eruption may have started earlier but it was hard to see against the heavy clouds on the horizon before Christmas.

Big Volcanic Eruption Near Tonga's Capital (Dec 30)

A large volcanic eruption is taking place near Tonga's capital's Nuku'alofa, sending ash and steam into the sky.

It is the same volcano which erupted out of the Pacific Ocean, 63 kilometres north of Nuku'alofa in 2009, creating an island.

New Zealand's Metservice has yet to issue any aviation warning in the region, despite the large plume of ash.

Known as the Hunga Ha'apai volcano, Matangi Tonga says it may have been erupting for more than a week.

The eruption was first reported by a fisherman who came back from the area on December 19, according to the Deputy Secretary of Lands and Natural Resources, Taniela Kula.

The volcano sits on the edge of the Tonga/Kermadec Trench with runs from Samoa through Tonga and down the New Zealand east coast.

Satellite images from 28 Dec already show a plume of discolored water, not visible on images of 18 Dec, suggesting the activity started during this interval.

From available pictures on social media, a water and possibly ash-containing plume is visible from a distance, which indicates that the eruption has by now breached the surface.

Whether or not it will lead to the formation of a temporary or even permanent new island remains to be seen in 2015.

Explosive Activity Increases at Kamchatka's Shiveluch Volcano (Dec 30)

The volcano's activity seems to have increased recently. A large explosion occurred on December 30 at 07:06 local time, sending a shower of incandescent bombs to heights approaching 1.5-2 km above the lava dome and more than 1 km lateral distance.

A cloud of ash belched out by the Sheveluch volcano in Kamchatka is spreading 35 kilometers eastwards and volcanic particles are drifting with the wind to the Pacific Ocean.

“The volcano has ejected cinders to the altitude of 6,000 meters above sea level,” according to the Kamchatka Volcano Eruptions Reaction Team (KVERT) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The aviation authorities have assigned the orange level of aviation risks to the eruption, which means that the volcanic particles ejected from the Sheveluch’s crater pose a potential menace for all types of aircraft and can render the engines of airliners and helicopters inoperative.

Strong Explosive Eruption at Indonesia's Soputan Volcano (Jan 6)

The volcano erupted this morning at 02:45 local time with a strong explosion from the summit lava dome, sending an ash column 26,000 ft (8.5 km) high.

The eruption followed an increase in seismic activity in December, when so-called "drumbeat" earthquakes appeared - a type of volcanic tremor typically associated with movements of viscous magma at shallow depths,- in this case new lava rising beneath the existing lava dome. As a consequence, the alert status of the volcano had been raised to the second highest level "Siaga" (3 on a scale of 1-4, alert).

Today's explosion caused parts of the summit dome that occupies the crater, open to the western flank, to collapse and produce a glowing avalanche that traveled approx. 2000 m, remaining within the volcano's caldera. It seems that no pyroclastic flow (which could sweep over the caldera walls and into inhabited areas below) occurred. No damage to people or infrastructure was reported.

Continued glow from the summit dome after the explosion suggests that magma has and continues to arrive now there.

Violent explosions at volcanoes around the Ring of Fire in Guatemala, Kamchatka and Tonga.

Intense Explosive Activity at Guatemala's Fuego Volcano (Jan 11)

Strong strombolian-type explosions have been occurring at rates of 6-8 per hour, sometimes ejecting incandescent bombs to more than 1000 m above the crater and producing glowing avalanches. Some of these reached the vegetation and caused small fires.

Ash plumes rose to 1-1.5 km above the crater and drifted 10-15 km to the west and southwest.

Increased Eruptive Activity at Kamchatka's Klyuchevskoy Volcano (Jan 11)

Strombolian explosions from the summit vent have picked up during the past 1-2 days.

A lava flow is now active on the southeastern flank and ash plumes have been reaching 28,000 ft (8.5 km) altitude. KVERT raised the volcano's alert level to orange.

Incandescent material from the explosive summit activity is ejected to several hundred meters above the crater. Relatively intense ash emissions have been causing ash fall in up to 30 km distance to the west of the volcano.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai Volcano Eruption Breaches Ocean Surface, Ash Plume Forces Airlines to Divert Flights (Jan 12)

The submarine eruption has apparently breached the surface. A steam and possibly ash plume was reported to have reached up to 30,000 ft (10 km) above sea level today and yesterday, New Zealand's VAAC Wellington reported, based on pilots' observations.

The Wellington Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, part of the Metservice, this afternoon issued an advisory to aircraft saying the Hunga Ha'apai volcano is reportedly sending "dark volcanic cloud" 10 nautical miles (18 kilometres) around the small island.

Due to heavy cloud in the area no one has a clear picture of what is happening.

Unconfirmed reports say ash is falling on Ha'apai Island and some domestic flights in Tonga have been cancelled due to safety concerns.

Air New Zealand flights between Auckland and Samoa have been diverted around the area and Fiji Airways has cancelled a Nadi to Tonga flight.

Dramatic new photo reveals Tonga's flight-disrupting volcano

A new photo shows ash erupting from a volcano off Tonga in the South Pacific. Photo / Matangi Tonga A new photo shows ash erupting from a volcano off Tonga in the South Pacific. Photo / Matangi Tonga

AA dramatic new image has emerged of the volcanic eruption which spewed a huge plume of ash 9km into the sky, disrupting air travel to and from Tonga.

Hundreds of travellers and holidaymakers were left stranded after flights to and from Tonga were cancelled yesterday because of the volcanic ash cloud.

The new photo, released by the Tongan Navy, shows a huge cloud of black and grey ash erupting from the volcano.

Airports in Tonga have now reopened and flights are expected to be able to leave, but Air New Zealand hasn't been able to get a plane to the island kingdom.

New Volcanic Island Rapidly Growing From Tonga-Hunga Eruption (Jan 16)

A new island is now growing at the eruption site between Hunga Ha’apai and Hunga Tonga Islands. As of yesterday, it had an east-west elongated 1.5-2 km long and approx. 1 km wide shape with a half-open cone around the crater reaching almost 100 m in height already.

The new island seems already to have touched the northeastern tip of Hunga Ha’apai island. Violent sea-water and lava interaction has been generating jets of dark ash and dense steam plumes reaching several kilometers of height, as well as ground-hugging base surges.

During the past days, ash plumes have remained confined to lower altitudes and most flights in the area have resumed.

The info graphic by Matangi Tonga online puts the submarine vent significantly to the SE of the new island, which suggests the possibility that there might been two vents - one at the shown location in the map, one at or very near the new island where the first steam plumes appeared on satellite imagery from 30 Dec shortly after the start of the eruption.

A red algae bloom observed in nearby waters of Tonga might be indirectly be related to the eruption, because the emission of volcanic particles, fluids and gasses into the sea water is known to favor their growth.

Iceland's Bardarbunga Lava Field Now Bigger Than Manhattan (Jan 17)

Lava originating from the Bardarbunga volcanic system now spreads for 30 miles over an area bigger than Manhattan.

The Holuhraun is the country's biggest basaltic lava flow since 1784, creating a lava field more than 32 square miles in size.

NASA captured an aerial view of the lava field last Jan. 3, showing newly formed basaltic rock and fresh lava. A lava lake was also visible on the lava field's western portion, with steam rising along the field's eastern borders where the lava flow meets the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. Where much of the lava flow back in September was in surface lava rivers, activity has shifted to a closed channel on the eastern side in January.

Researchers from the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland estimate the lava field to be 33 feet thick on the eastern end, 39 feet thick at the center and 46 feet thick at the western portion using surveillance flight data. With lava volume at 1.1 cubic kilometers, the Bardarbunga eruption was classified as a flood basalt.

Volcanologists have predicted the Bardarbunga's eruption will continue for years.

The public is banned from approaching the lava flow because of the high risk of a fissure erupting under the glacier. If this happens, a great flood will ensue, bringing a different kind of problem to Iceland.

Powerful Eruptions at Indonesia’s Mount Soputan (Jan 18)

Mt Soputan has erupted in northern Indonesia, releasing molten lava, hot ash, and thick smoke and leaving local residents in panic.

Mount Soputan in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi Province produced a 20,000 ft ash plume with strong pyroclastic flows.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the volcano erupted at 11.38am (0338 GMT).

A viscous lava flow lobe is active on the western flank of the summit cone. Spectacular incandescent rockfalls accompany this effusive activity.

The eruption, similar to Sinabung's ongoing one, is entering a potentially very dangerous phase.

A safety radius of 6.5 km around the volcano's summit is in place.

The volcano has been showing signs of increased volcanic activity since January 14.

Sources say spewed ash was being blown to the south-west Mount Soputan, which erupted twice on January 6 and has been showing increased activity since then.

Eruptions at Kamchatka's Klyuchevskoy Volcano Intensify (Jan 20)

The eruptions at Klyuchevskoy volcano have intensified over the past 24 hours.

A sustained ash plume, generated by near-continuous strombolian explosions or lava fountains, is rising 1.5-2 km from the volcano's summit, reaching approx. 24,000 ft (7.2 km) altitude, and drifting WSW.

Eurasia's highest volcano disgorged a red-hot blast to the elevation of 200 meters above its crater.

A stream of lava about 1,000 meters long was descending down the southeastern slope at the time of reporting and the eruptions continue.

A lava flow is also descending on the upper western flank.

    Volcanic activity for Feb 3:

Bardarbunga (Central Iceland): The eruption, now going on for more than 150 days, continues with little changes. Although it has started to decrease, very slowly, in intensity, it remains impressive and magma discharge is still an impressive approx. 100 cubic meters per second. Caldera subsidence and seismicity continue as well, but a slow decreasing trend of subsidence rate - from initially 50 cm a day to now about half of that now - is visible as well and seems to correlated with the decrease in magma effusion. Icelandic scientists think therefore that subsidence (and hence, the eruption,) might go on for another 5 to 16 months.

Fogo (Cape Verde): Mild intermittent explosive activity continues at the volcano accompanied by effusive activity. A new lava flow, smaller than the ones in the first weeks, but still well alimented, has been active in the Cha caldera over the past days and advanced slowly approx. 1500 m west-southwest passing between Monte Beco and Monte Saia cones.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): The explosion on 1 Feb left a large crater on the lava dome, from where persistent incandescence can now be seen. This and occasional glowing rockfalls originating there indicate that magma continues to arrive at the dome.

Shishaldin (United States, Aleutian Islands): A small eruption was seen last night from a ship, VAAC Anchorage reports. Aviation color code remains orange. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, elevated surface temperatures at the summit continue and small steam emissions are visible on clear webcam images, as well as "a wispy, low-level ash emission from the summit drifting west-southwest" on one image.

Santiaguito (Guatemala): Activity has remained similar to the previous months. Occasional small explosions from the dome and a continuing active lava flow on the southeast side of Caliente dome continue.

Pacaya (Guatemala): New ash emissions and explosions, up to 40 per day, have occurred last week, indicating the volcano could be heading towards a new eruptive phase of strombolian activity. So far, the emissions were small and seem to be related to the opening of a new central crater, estimated 40-50 meters wide with unknown depth. Elevated tremor accompanies this activity.

Fuego (Guatemala): Activity has been at the higher end of the scale recently. Strong explosions occur frequently, ejecting plumes that reach 1-1.3 km height and causing constant avalanches on the volcano's upper slopes, often causing bush fires in the vegetation below. Shock waves rattle ceilings and windows in the villages of Panimache, La Rochelle, Morelia.

New Volcanic Eruption off South Africa After Quake Swarm (Feb 4)

A new eruption has started on remote Reunion Island, where Piton de la Fournaise is now producing a lava flow that is snaking down its slopes.

The new eruption is coming from the southern side of the volcano and webcams show the lava from Piton de Bert, one of the peaks of Piton de la Fournaise.

The lava flow is descending SSW and has already reached the base of the Dolomieu crater, i.e. the floor of the enclos. Its length is more than 1 km.

A swarm of earthquakes preceded this eruption, with at least a few hundred recorded earlier today.

This is the second eruption in the past year at Piton de la Fournaise after 3 years of quiet. That eruption only lasted a few hours and the volcano was recently lowered from a volcanic alert status.

Similar to Kilauea, the volcano mainly produces lava flows, although the lava at Piton de la Fournaise is less viscous that at Kilauea thanks to the higher alkali content (sodium, potassium, calcium) in the lava.

Guatemala's Fuego volcano spews ash, forces airport closure

Feb 7 (Reuters) - Guatemala's Fuego volcano belched black ash into the sky on Saturday, causing the government to evacuate 100 nearby residents and forcing the closure of the capital's international airport, President Otto Perez told reporters.

The volcano, about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of the capital, forced the cancellation of several flights as Guatemala's main airport shut down and workers sought to clear the runways of ash.

Officials said the amount of falling ash was moderate but urged nearby residents to use masks or wet cloth to guard against breathing dangerous contaminants.

The airport is expected to reopen by early Sunday morning. (Reporting by Sofia Menchu; Writing by David Alire Garcia; Editing by Paul Tait)

Volcano Ash To Blame For 'Milky' Rain In Oregon, Washington, Meteorologists Suggest

Meteorologists are stumped after rainfall in Oregon, Washington and neighboring areas in which the precipitation appeared to be dirty, or milky, in texture. Photographs posted by the U.S. National Weather Service indicate that, unlike typically clear rain, this liquid was infused with something else. But what?

The so-called milky rain, pelting the Pacific Northwest Friday morning, left cars and other outdoor fixtures covered with streaks of white, dusty material.

A number of theories abound, with meteorologists telling BuzzFeed the likeliest cause is dirt and dust from the Northwest landscape being circulated within the weather system.

“The ash is more than likely from Volcano Shiveluch in Kamchatka Krai, Russia, which spewed an ash plume to about the 22,000-foot level in late January,” the Walla Walla County Emergency Management agency in Walla Walla, Washington said in a Facebook post. It added there are a number of active volcanoes that could be responsible. “It has been deposited in a wide spread area, including Washington and Oregon,” the agency said.

The right-leaning media outlet the Blaze suggested the cloudiness of the rainwater could be caused by dust from recent eruptions of Japan’s Sakurajima volcano. Commenters beneath the article took on a decidedly more conspiratorial bent, accusing the liberal media of being too quick to blame climate change.

The NWS plans to re-examine old satellite data with the hope of finding out exactly what happened. This type of activity isn’t totally unprecedented in Oregon, although ashlike rain typically falls toward the end of a long hot summer.

“Oregon has strong winds,” NWS meteorologist Mark Tuner told BuzzFeed. “In some summer dry spells, we’ll get big dust storms, and then if it rains, we can see a similar thing. ... It’s a mystery at this point.”

    New volcanic activity in Tonga

Tongan authorities say fresh volcanic activity at the Home Reef volcano, near the northern islands of Vava'u, is creating a steam cloud two kilometres high.

Government geologist Rennie Vaiomounga says a local pilot first reported the activity on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Vaiomounga says that report has since been confirmed by a boat in the area.

"We got the report from the Real Tonga airlines pilot about they saw a plume coming out from the area which we roughly estimate the area should be from the Home Reef about 40 nautical miles southwest of Vava'u. It's one of the submarine volcanoes."

Mr Vaiomounga says a team will be sent to monitor the activity once weather conditions have improved.

The Home Reef volcano last had signficant activity in 2006.

One month ago volcanic activity disrupted flights and created land in the Hunga Ha'apai area further south.

Experts confirm increased activity at Turrialba Volcano

Residents near Turrialba are reporting increased volcanic emissions since the early hours of Wednesday, Feb. 11.

    (Ericka Calvo Durán/OVSICORI Facebook)

Tall, white columns of vapor and gas on Wednesday morning surprised residents near the Turrialba Volcano, east of Cartago, as the western crater registered increased activity that formed a 1.5-kilometer fumarole, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported.

María Martínez Cruz, a volcanology and geochemistry expert at OVSICORI, explained that emissions don’t yet include ash, a situation that last year affected residents north of Cartago and as far away as the provinces of San José, Heredia and Limón.

“We haven’t received any reports of ashes being emitted, and the gas and vapor plume has maintained its size. At its peak it reached a maximum height of 4 kilometers above sea level, or some 1.5 kilometers above the crater,” Martínez said.

Reports from both OVSICORI and the University of Costa Rica’s National Seismological Network (RSN) state that activity at Turrialba can be considered within normal parameters and is caused by the large amount of rainfall registered in the area in recent days and an increase in the crater’s temperature.

OVSICORI and RSN experts on Thursday will conduct inspections at Turrialba to take measurements and samples from the crater.

In addition to gas and vapor, experts have not registered any irregular increase in the area’s seismicity, Martínez said.

“At this time activity at Turrialba is lower than that currently registered at Irazú Volcano,” she said. Irazú, also in Cartago, is currently experiencing a series of minor tremors that have ocurred since December.

On Oct. 29, 2014, Turrialba, located 67 km northeast of San José, registered its largest explosions and ash emission in the past 150 years.

At the time, 180 hectares north of Cartago were affected on some level, but the Agriculture Ministry’s director of extension services, Felipe Arguedas, said there was no cause for concern about long-term consequences for human health.

Dairy and crop farming are the primary productive activities in the northeastern region of Cartago, and farmers mostly grow vegetables, tubers and flowers. About 80 percent of potatoes consumed in Costa Rica are produced in this region.

Elevated volcanic activity reported in Sumatra and Kamchatka.

    Sinabung (Sumatra)

A high-level eruption at 15:22 UTC with an ash plume rising to 45,000 ft (15 km) altitude was reported a short time ago.

On Feb 19, Mt. Sinabung spewed volcanic material the farthest since 2010, burning houses in two villages in a 3-to-5-kilometer radius to the volcano’s south.

Fortunately, no victims were reported as residents had been permanently relocated.

Temburun villager Nelsi Singarimbun said he had not seen a lava flow reach as far as it did on Wednesday since the volcano erupted in 2010.

“Usually, the Mount Sinabung lava flow never reaches that far, but this time it reached Suka Meriah and Gurukinayan villages. This is the farthest I’ve ever seen,” Nelsi told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Nelsi said he witnessed the enormous molten lava flow from his home located 4.5 km west of the volcano.

He added that the lava flow felled trees and razed homes in Suka Meriah and Gurukinayan from 7:20 p.m. until 8:10 p.m.

“The lava flow, which lasted for around 50 minutes, burned trees and some homes there.”

Nelsi added that the incident had caused fear among residents living around Sinabung as the lava flow had reached settlements.

Payung villager Alfinus Ginting also expressed fear about the increased volcanic activities of late.

“Residents have been on the alert at home from last night until this afternoon. They are afraid because Sinabung has continued to erupt lately.”

Alaska flights canceled over ash from Russian volcano

    Updated 0712 GMT (1512 HKT) March 1, 2015

    http://edition.cnn.com/2015/03/01/us/alaska-volcano-flights-cancele...

(CNN)A volcano in Russia led to the cancellation of flights in Alaska over the weekend.

"We canceled two roundtrip flights between Anchorage and Bethel, and Anchorage and Nome after an advisory of low visibility," Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Halley Knigge said.

Ash from Russia's Shiveluch volcano was the culprit behind the flight disruptions Saturday, said Jeff Freymueller, a scientist at the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

The volcano erupted Friday, shooting ash into the atmosphere some 30,000 feet. Winds blew the ash cloud across the Bering Sea and into western Alaska, Freymueller said.

Shiveluch, which has been erupting consistently, caused a similar incident in January, he said.

The airline will only operate flights when it's safe to do so and will not fly into areas of reported ash.

Alaska Airlines was uncertain if additional flights would be canceled, but said it's monitoring the situation.

Three volcanoes are erupting on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula: Shiveluch, Klyuchevskoy and Karymsky.

So said the head of the ministry, Rodrigo Peñailillo. The authority urged people to remain calm and insisted that the evacuation is maintained because of the risk of landslides.

SANTIAGO Interior Minister Rodrigo Peñailillo, said this morning that until this morning a total of 3,385 people evacuated due to the eruption produced was recorded in the Villarrica volcano this morning. At the same time, confirmed that Red Alert status determined by the increased activity of the solid will remain at least until 09:00 am this morning, due to the risk of floods caused by melting snow in the mountains . The alert applies in the communes of Villarrica, Pucón and Curarrehue in the Araucania Region, and the Panguipulli, in Los Ríos.

The authority confirmed the suspension of classes in the three communes cited in La Araucanía and the Coñaripe, Los Rios. The same applies in the five colleges established as shelters in the latter region. Peñailillo said that evacuees, some 2,100 people were in safe areas in Pucon, and 265 people were in the same situation Licanray. In Coñaripe, Los Rios, 1,000 people also moved to safe areas...

The Secretary of State referred to the condition generated by the phenomenon after a meeting of the Emergency Operations Committee (COE). Following the report delivered about 6:18 pm, the head of the Interior moved to La Moneda to participate in a cabinet meeting convened by President Michelle Bachelet.

The eruption occurred at 03:00 when the volcano lava and smoke emitted at altitudes of about 3 km. The phenomenon caused residents of Pucón and other nearby towns began to evacuate their homes spontaneously. The risk of generating lahars, water flows and sediment that slide from volcanic cones eruptions experience, is one of the greatest dangers associated with such phenomena.

More on the powerful volcanic eruption in Chile today.

Chile's Villarica Volcano Sends Lava 3,000ft High (Mar 3)

Chile's Villarica volcano has erupted, sending lava 3,000ft into the air and cascading down the hillsides, and forcing the evacuation of over 3,000 people

The Villarica volcano in Chile has erupted after weeks of rumbling, shooting a column of lava 3,000ft into the sky in the early hours of Tuesday.

The 3am eruption forced more than 3,000 people from their homes and sent streams of lava down the mountain. One of the world's most active volcanoes, the 9,000-foot mountain is located in Chile's central valley about 400 miles south of the capital, Santiago.

Rodrigo Peñailillo, the Chilean interior minister, said: "We are continuing to evacuate people who are affected by the red alert zones.

"The National Geology and Mines Service (ONEMI) is evaluating possible flooding, which could be caused by melting on the volcanic cone."

The symmetrical volcano is situated on the shores of Lake Villarica, by the town of the same name. The region is a tourist hotspot, attracting thousands of people annually to climb the nearby hills and hike in the surrounding forests.

According to ONEMI, 2,100 people have been evacuated from the town of Pucon - one of the most popular tourist towns in Chile, and a centre for outdoor sports.

In the Villarica district, 20 people have been evacuated, while a further thousand people have left the "comuna" - district - of Panguipulli.

Powerful Eruption at Indonesia's Mount Soputan (Mar 7)

A new explosive eruptive phase occurred this morning, producing an ash plume that rose 4.5 km from the volcano's summit and pyroclastic flows that traveled 2.5 km.

Mount Soputan in Southeast Minahasa District, North Sulawesi erupted at 05:09 pm Central Indonesian Time (GMT+8).

Head of Data and Information Center of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said here, Saturday, on a broadcast statement that according to a report of the Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG), Mount Soputan spewed pyroclastic flow to the east side of the volcano reaching 2,500 meters from its peak.

Volcanic ash was falling to several sub-districts in Southeast Minahasa District such as Silian Raya, Touluaan, Tombatu, Pasan and Rataha.

The volcano is still in alert level III status.

"There are no people evacuated as the nearest residential area is located eight kilometers from the mounts peak," Nugroho said.

In June 2008, Mount Soputan erupted and spewed pyroclastic flow reaching a radius of 6.5km from the peak.

The authority, therefore, stated that people activities are banned in the area within 6.5km radius from the Mount Soputan peak.

Nicaraguans Wary as San Cristobal Volcano Rumbles (Mar 6)

Communities living near Nicaragua's San Cristobal volcano were on edge Friday, after two volcanic explosions shook the region.

San Cristobal spewed ash and smoke twice on Thursday afternoon, according to La Prensa newspaper.

The first explosion sent volcanic material shooting as high as 200 meters, while the second one produced a column of smoke and ash 500 meters high.

The newspaper said the ash affected at least three nearby communities – all located in the state of Chinandega.

Local authorities say they are closely monitoring the volcano for signs of a full scale eruption. For now, though, the government is urging locals to remain calm.

Along with being Nicaragua's highest volcano, San Cristobal is also widely viewed as the country's most active. The volcano has repeatedly erupted in recent years, but usually doesn't threaten locals.

In 2012 and 2013, thousands of nearby residents were forced to evacuate twice, amid fears of a major volcanic event.

Second volcano rumbles to life in Guatemala

Two of Guatemala’s three active volcanoes have now rumbled to life, officials said Wednesday, one day after the Santiaguito volcano began belching smoke and showering nearby towns with ash.

Guatemala’s Fuego volcano, in the southwest, over the past several weeks has spewed adjacent towns with soot, forcing the temporary closure last month of a neighboring airport.

Now the Santiaguito volcano in the west has awakened as well, emitting columns of ash 400 meters (1,300 feet) tall above its crater.

Santiaguito, whose peak soars to 2,500 meters above sea level, is located in western Quetzaltenango province.

The sleeping giant began to stir on Tuesday, but officials said that thus far, they have not had to evacuate populated areas nearby.

The 3,700-meter tall Fuego — whose name means fire in English — last month spewed out large columns of ash, prompting an orange alert and forcing nearby residents to wear protective masks.

In 2012, several thousand people were evacuated from Fuego’s slopes after an eruption.

Officials said they are keeping an eye on Guatemala’s third active volcano, Pacaya, in the south. So far, there is no indication that it has been roused from its slumber.

Costa Rica's Turrialba Volcano Has Most Powerful Eruption in  Over a Century (Mar 12)

Costa Rica's Turrialba volcano belched a column of gas and ash up to 3,280 feet (1 km) into the air on Thursday in its most powerful eruption in over a century, and local authorities started to evacuate residents from the surrounding area.

Four explosions emanated from the volcano in central Costa Rica on Thursday, and ash reached parts of the capital San Jose some 30 miles (50 km) away, where the airport was closed. Before today, an expulsion of ash and magma from the volcano in October was its most significant activity in over a century.

"We have recommended the evacuation of people and small animals as a precaution. The last explosion was very strong," a spokesman for the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Obsivori) said.

Costa Rica's emergency services ordered the closure of access roads near the volcano, which is major tourist draw, and were evacuating a radius of just over a mile around the volcano.

Two of the explosions rocked Turrialba Volcano within 3 hours of each other.

The first explosion occurred at 10:50 a.m. The fumarole spewed materials for about 24 minutes and reached some 500 meters (1,640 feet) above the crater’s summit, located some 67 kilometers northeast of the capital San José.

A second more powerful explosion at 1:48 p.m. created an ash column that reached some 1,000 meters (3,280 feet).

A series of volcanic tremors in the surroundings of Turrialba canton followed the explosion, said Raúl Mora, a volcanologist with the National University’s National Seismological Network, who was at Turrialba at the time.

Mora said the explosion had a greater magnitude than those recorded last weekend.

Ashes were visible on roofs, windows and cars as far as the provinces of San José and Heredia.
