Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)
"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. " ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Etna- SICILY ITALY eruption: psychosis earthquake in Calabria for explosions and tremors, live images from webcams
Sunday, December 15, 2013
It 'a night of fear in the central and southern Calabria, where the population is not used to this kind of phenomenon, in many centers is frightened by the explosions and tremors caused by the eruption of Mount Etna to the point of thinking it is an earthquake. In some places there are even those who ran away from home and is spending the night in the car. We have received many reports especially from the area of Tropea Tropea, in the province of Vibo Valentia, where the explosions caused by the eruption are shaking the windows of the house, as it does not happen even in Catania and in many other places nearest to the volcano. Meanwhile, the eruption continues with lava fountains modest compared to the most recent paroxysms, while it is clear that the lava flow slowly advances toward the valley. Compared to previous eruptions, it is - at least until now - an event weaker but much more enduring.

Mt. Etna Eruption Closes Nearby Italian Airports (Dec 15)
The eruption of the Mount Etna volcano in Sicily has forced the closure of nearby Catania airport because of the plumes of ash billowing into the sky, airport officials said.
Twenty-one scheduled departures from the airport had to be scrapped and 26 arrivals re-routed to alternative destinations. The smaller airport of Comiso in the area was also closed down.
The company that manages Catania airport, Sac, said in a statement on Sunday that "the wind direction and intensity" meant the ash was a risk to flights and it had to close off its air space. The company will review the situation on Monday.
Etna is an active volcano and eruptions are frequent but the latest activity, which began on Saturday, is the most intense in months. The lava flow down one side of the mountain is visible from Catania and Taormina, a popular seaside resort. Three small earthquakes were also registered around the volcano on Sunday.

Authorities in El Salvador have started to evacuate the municipality of San Miguel after the Chaparrastique volcano erupted on Sunday, shooting a giant ash cloud into the sky.
The government has issued a yellow alert and is expected to evacuate families within 3 kilometers (approximately 2 miles) of the volcano to emergency shelters. More than 5,000 people live near the volcano according to civil protection officials.
Civil defence director Jorge Melendez said: "We have implemented emergency measures to evacuate villages located within 3 kilometres of the volcano."
There were no immediate reports of serious injuries, although two people are being treated for respiratory problems.
Health authorities recommend breathing through moist handkerchiefs and avoid drinking water from local sources.
The eruption began at 10:30 am local time on Sunday morning and shot a column of gas and ash 5 kilometres (approximately 3 miles) high into the sky, according to El Salvador's ministry of environment and natural resources.
The government is monitoring the situation and searching for traces of fresh lava.
President Mauricio Funes said in a television address: "We are not certain there will be new eruptions, but we can't rule out that possibility either."
The Chaparrastique volcano, which is about 140 kilometres (86 miles) to the east of the capital, last erupted in 1976.
The volcano, which is about 86 miles to the east of the capital, spewed ash over a wide area and the smell of sulfur hung over surrounding towns, according to reports on social media. Authorities recommended breathing through moist handkerchiefs.
Santos Osorio, a member of a local coffee growers union, said heavy ash was falling in the area and local coffee plantations would be checked for damage.
El Salvador's crop has already been blighted by an outbreak of leaf rust that has reduced output in all five of Central America's coffee producers.
El Salvador has 23 active volcanoes and the Chaparrastique volcano is considered one of the most active, with 26 eruptions in the last 500 years, the environment ministry said. In a 1976 eruption, lava gushed from the volcano and it shook violently in another event in 2010.

Sumatra's Mount Sinabung Erupts 9 Times, 19,000 Forced To Evacuate (Dec 31)

Mt Sinabung let out a new, powerful burst Tuesday, prompting warnings for airplanes and triggering panic among villagers.
Nine eruptions Tuesday sent lava and searing gas tumbling out of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province, The volcano started spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) in the air late Monday, but no casualties were reported.
More than 19,000 people have been evacuated from villages in a danger zone 5 kilometers (3 miles) around the crater to temporary shelters since authorities raised the alert status for Sinabung to the highest level in November.
Gray ash covered villages, farms and trees as far as 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of the mountain.
The 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) Mount Sinabung has caught scientists off guard because the volcano had been quiet for four centuries.
Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said airlines had been notified to avoid routes near the mountain.

Mt. Sinabung Erupts 77 Times in 24 Hours, Danger Zone Grows (Jan 5)

Authorities extended a danger zone around a rumbling volcano in western Indonesia on Sunday after it spewed blistering gas farther than expected, sending panicked residents streaming down the sides of the mountain.
Mount Sinabung’s booming explosion just after midnight triggered a panicked evacuation. Men with ash-covered faces streamed down the scorched slopes on motorcycles, followed by truckloads of women and children, many crying. Officials barked out orders on bullhorns as rocks and debris rained from the sky.
The volcano erupted at least 77 times over the weekend, sending lava and searing gas tumbling down the southeastern slopes up to five kilometres (three miles) away.
The volcano was still spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) in several eruptions Sunday.
Mr. Nugroho, the disaster agency spokesman, said the evacuation zone, which has stood at a five-kilometer radius around the volcano's peak, has been extended to seven kilometers in the southeast, where volcanic activity is greatest. Residents of more than two dozen villages have been living in temporary shelters outside that zone, some for months. Many of their homes are caked with ash and their small farms left unattended.
If the no-go zone were the increase to 10 kilometers, the number of displaced persons would reach nearly 60,000, Mr. Nugroho said. The disaster agency cannot predict the mountain's activity but has extended a period of extra caution to Jan. 18, he said.
Soldiers joined the rescue operation in two villages of Jewara and Pintu Besi, about seven kilometres (four miles) from the crater, where homes and farms were caked in grey dust.
More than 20,000 people have been evacuated from villages around the crater into several temporary shelters since authorities raised the alert status for Sinabung to the highest level in November.
“We were tired here … we’ve lost everything. We wonder about our lives after this disaster,” said Anton Sitepu, a father of four who is among the villagers in a cramped shelter in Telagah village.

Sinabung Volcano Erupts 24 Times, 25,000 Evacuated (Jan 10)

Mt Sinabung erupted 24 times on Friday - 220 times in the past week - shooting a column of ash about 4,000 meters into the sky and forcing further evacuations, official said.
Powerful burst of ash spread from the crater of rumbling the volcano, located in Karo district, and the hot ash slid off to the southeast, scaling up the number of people fleeing the eruption to 24,949 on Friday from 22,708 just days before, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency.
"It is expected that the volcano is going to persist eruption in days to come," he told Xinhua over phone.
Evacuation zone has been declared at 7 km from the crater of the volcano, Sutopo said, adding the authorities will proceed to send emergency relief aids to affected-areas.
A national emergency hasn't yet been declared, but the government is prepared for the "worst case scenario."

Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala: Conred´s Orange Alert declared
Lava flowing down the flanks of Guatemala’s Pacaya volcano prompted the evacuation of people threatened by the eruption.
The country’s National Disaster Reduction Commission said residents of Villa Canales, El Chupadero and Pacaya were relocated to San Vicente Pacaya, a town at a safer distance from Pacaya, one of the country’s most active volcanoes.
Lava flows were said to be nearly 2,000 feet wide and 2 miles long just south of Guatemala City.
As a response, CONRED has closed access to the park and civil aviation authority has limited the number of flights in and out of Guatemala airport because of the presence of ash plumes.

Mt Sinabung Eruptions Intensify, Over 26,000 Evacuated (Jan 14)

The eruption produced the largest pyroclastic flows to date, reaching more than 5-6 km in length, with ash plumes rising to approximately 25,000 ft (8 km) altitude and over a 4.5 km radius.
Enormous clouds rose from the mountain, as thick layers of grey ash blanketed plantations and nearby houses.
Hot lava, which has been spewing from the volcano for the past two weeks, has flowed into a river and filled up valleys with pyroclastic material.
With the volcano erupting regularly, many of those who have left their homes since Sinabung started erupting in September have fallen ill, a local government official said.
"Some refugees are sick, coughing mainly, and they are also in need of clean water," Robert Peranginangin,a spokesman for Karo district.

Indonesian Authorities Grapple With Refugee Crisis (Jan 22)

Months of volcanic eruptions have displaced tens of thousands, forcing Indonesian authorities to grapple with a growing refugee crisis on Sumatra Island.
Over the past three months, daily eruptions from Mount Sinabung, a massif in Indonesia's far west, have displaced nearly 30,000 residents and caused millions of dollars in damage.
A handful of villages are being permanently relocated and the evacuation zone stretches between 3.1 and 4.3 miles down the mountain. Officials have a contingency plan to extend it to around six miles if activity worsens, which would raise the number of evacuees to almost 60,000 people. There is no telling when the eruptions will end.
The displaced around Sinabung are mainly small landholders who farm the fertile volcanic soils below the roughly 8,200-foot peak. Many have sold their livestock and are relying on government assistance.
The evacuees are housed and fed in mosques, churches and wedding halls in various degrees of comfort. In the largest mosque in Kabanjahe, the district seat, one group of more than 600 villagers has slept on floor mats since early November.
Since November, the mountain has been spewing gray ash as much as four miles into the sky. The spread of fine dust has coated the landscape and ash has traveled 35 miles to Medan, home to more than two million people.
Increasingly, the eruptions are accompanied by the more dangerous pyroclastic flows, the longest of which have extended about three miles down the mountain.
Part of the challenge in Indonesia, a sprawling country of 18,000 islands and more than 240 million people, is that disasters can strike in unison. In the past week, heavy rains have forced more than 40,000 people from their homes in the capital, Jakarta, and 15,000 more in the eastern island of Sulawesi.

Sinabung volcano (Sumatra) - series of pyroclastic flows kill at least 14 people
http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/sinabung/news.html
http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/sinabung/news.html
Sad news today: the volcano claimed its first victims this morning due to a direct effect of the eruption. At least 14 people were reported killed and 3 others severely bunt by one or two moderately large pyroclastic flows this morning. 3 more people are still reported missing.
According to Jakarta Post all fatalities that could be located so far had occurred in Suka Meriah village, which is located within a 3-kilometer radius of the volcano, thus in well in the exclusion zone
According to BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, there were three eruptions: the first eruption occurred at 10:30 a.m. (local time) and lasted for eight-and-a-half-minutes, generating a 4.5 km long pyroclastic flow, while the second followed immediately after at 10:38 a.m. and lasted just over four
minutes, followed by a third one at 11:27 a.m. for 84 seconds.
It is not exactly clear where the pyroclastic flow originated, from explosions at the summit, collapse of the summit lava dome, or from (partial collapse) on the viscous flow that had recently been emplaced

Kavachi is an undersea volcano on the southern edge of the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It erupted dozens of times in the 20th century, often breaking the water surface, only to be eroded back below the water line within a few months.

On January 29, 2014, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured what could be the start of a new cycle of island life and death. Aquamarine water extends eastward from the submerged volcano; the color is likely from dissolved volcanic gases and lava fragments suspended in the water. Directly above the undersea peak, a bright patch is suggestive of vigorously churning water—but there is no sign that the eruption has broken the surface.

Ecuador's Tungurahua Volcano Erupts 3 Times, 40,000 Ft Ash Cloud (Feb 1)
The institute said that two moderate explosions on Saturday were followed by a third of greater size, and pyroclastic flow stretched 500 meters down its flank. The blasts created a 5-mile (8-kilometer) column of ash above the volcano, which is located 84 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of the capital, Quito.
Heavy ash fall occurred immediately afterwards on all sides of the volcano, most notably to the NW, NE, W, W and SE. In the sector of Chacauco, the tephra fall caused total darkness.
Collapsing parts of the eruption column produced larger pyroclastic flows that descended the Juive, Vazcúnto, and other canyons draining from the volcano reaching its feet. The largest flow descended on the NW side reached the lower Achupashal valley, cut the Baños-Penipe road and plunged into the Chambo river after reaching more than 7-8 km from the volcano.
Some of the flows damaged IGPEN monitoring instruments in the ravines of Vazcun, Achupashal, and Juive, blocking a route to a tourist site called Banos.
After 7:00 pm local time, paroxysm activity gradually decreased and turned to continuous, but still very strong strombolian explosions that were accompanied by strong shock waves that rattled windows and roofs of houses in surrounding villages. Lava fountains could be seen rising 500-800 m from the crater.

22 Volcanoes in Indonesia on Raised Alert Status (Feb 3)
Authorities said Karangetang and Lokon volcanoes on Sulawesi Island and Roketada in East Nusa Tenggara have been placed on high alert – the third in a four level scale.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), told the Jakarta Globe: "The [third level of alert] status means that all the data show that an eruption or a disaster could happen. It means preparation for the people living in the dangerous areas; setting up emergency facilities, daily coordination, and full-time patrols."
As many as 19 volcanoes in Indonesia have shown increasing volcanic activities and their statuses have been raised from normal to alert level II.
Head of Data and Information Center of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho issued a statement, here on Monday that the 19 volcanoes are Kelud, Raung, Ibu, Lewotobi Perempuan, Ijen, Gamkonora, Soputan, Sangeangapi, Papandayan, Dieng, Seulewah Agam, Gamalama, Bromo, Semeru, Talang, Anak Krakatau, Marapi, Dukono and Kerinci.
"The alert level II simply means an increasing activity of the volcano above normal status; all symptoms are taken into account." Nugroho assured.
Tourism centers, hotels, agriculture and peoples economic activities outside the exclusion zone might be affected. "It happens at Mount Bromo, Ijen, Dieng, Tangkuban Perahu and Papandayan," Nugroho added.
Hotels and tourism centers in Kabanjahe, North Sumatra, were deserted as people are afraid to visit these places.
There are stages from normal, alert level II (Waspada), alert level III (Siaga) and alert level IV (Awas) depending on the threat potential," Nugroho explained.
The status of Mount Kelud of East Java was raised from normal to alert level II on Sunday (Feb. 2) following its increasing volcanic activity.
Meanwhile, there are three volcanoes on alert level III (Siaga): Karangetang (N Sulawesi), Lokon (N Sulawesi) and Rokatenda (E Nusa Tenggara).
Mount Sinabung of North Sumatra is the only volcano on alert level IV (Awas)

Volcano's Ash Affects One-Third of Ecuador Provinces (Feb 3)
The ash travelled as far as Loja province, on the border with Peru.
A cloud of ash that climbed more than 2.5-mile-high (4-kilometer) from Tungurahua volcano on Monday has affected a third of Ecuador's provinces and forced the suspension of classes at some schools after temporarily closing a regional airport.
A series of 10 powerful cannon-like blasts shook the 16,480-foot (5,023-meter) volcano overnight and could be heard for miles. Tungurahua is nearly 90 miles (140 kilometers) south of Quito.
Fernanda Naranjo of Ecuador's geophysics institute said there have been no pyroclastic flow -- fast-moving, super-hot fluidized masses of rock fragments and gases-- since Saturday.
One such flow halted less than a mile from a highway, according to a bulletin posted on the institute's website. But none has reached villages, where residents have been evacuating their homes during the nighttime, then returning during the day. The volcano resumed erupting late last week after being quiet since October.
In Monday's bulletin, the institute said it is likely that Tungurahua will continue to experience explosions and produce small and moderate pyroclastic flows. It also said continued adverse health effects and more disruptions of air travel were possible.
On Sunday, ash from Tungurahua forced the closure for several hours Sunday of the Mariscal Lamar airport in Cuenca, Ecuador's third-largest city.
The government called for voluntary evacuations of hundreds of people living near Tungurahua, officials distributed masks to protect them against the inhalation of ash.

* More Haze For Southern Peninsula Malaysia [Malaysian Digest; 04 February, 2014]
KUALA LUMPUR: The northwesterly winds may cause ashes from the recently erupted Mount Sinabung volcano in Indonesia to reach the southern peninsular of Malaysia, causing flight disruptions and reduced visibility.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET) said, recent reports showed that the winds may continue until Wednesday. MET added that it will continue monitoring the situation and update its information on the direction of the wind and its possible threat to flights and visibility.
Last Saturday, the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Indonesia confirmed around 16 deaths and 3 injuries following the eruption of Mount Sinabung in the district of Karo, North Sumatera.
Hot clouds of ash and smoke continues to emanate from the volcano at dangerous levels, affecting the health of the people in the surrounding area.
Those who stay close to the area have been moved to a temporary safe house.
Sinabung is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean.

Mt. Sinabung's Eruption Spawns Tornadoes (Feb 1)
When Mt Sinabung erupted on Feb 1, pyroclastic flows left red-hot deposits along the way.
As the air above the deposits heated and quickly rose, a group of small tornadoes formed, twisting their way down the mountainside.
The video of the event was captured by Dr. Richard Roscoe of Photovolcanica.

Thousands Evacuated Following Powerful Eruptions at Mt Kelud (Feb 13)
Thousands of people on Java island are being evacuated after Mount Kelud erupted, an Indonesian official said.
Volcanic ash from the major eruption has led to the closure of three international airports and darkened skies on Indonesia's densely populated Java Island.
Ash covered the ground up to 130 kilometers (80 miles) away in Surabaya, the country's second-largest city, witnesses there said.
The country's transport ministry said Jogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya aiports were closed due to reduced visibility and the dangers posed to aircraft engines by ash.
Muhammad Hendrasto, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre, said the volcano in Kediri regency erupted about 90 minutes after authorities raised its status to the highest level.
He urged about 200,000 people living in 36 villages within the danger zone of six miles (10km) from the crater to evacuate.
A series of huge blasts unleashing stones and gravel caused panic among villagers who immediately fled to safer areas.
"The rains of gravel and sand have reached 15 km from the crater, hitting and impairing those being evacuated. This means that the evacuees must go farther than 15 km," Xinhua quoted Umar Rosadi, a volcanologist, as saying.
Based on data recorded days before the eruption, the official said that there are at least 21,000 people living in the dangerous zone.

Kelut Volcano Update: - 100,000 Evacuated, 3 Dead (Feb 14)
The eruption of Mount Kelud on Java island could be heard up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) away, Indonesia's disaster agency said.
"The eruption sounded like thousands of bombs exploding," Ratno Pramono, a 35-year-old farmer, said as he checked his property in the village of Sugihwaras, about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the crater. "I thought doomsday was upon us. Women and children were screaming and crying."
Preliminary estimations are that the eruption produced 80 million cubic meters of tephra. At the moment, the volcano continues to emit ash and steam, accompanied by tremors. The government of East Java has declared the state of emergency for the affected area. 350,000 dust masks are being distributed.
BNPB (Civil protection) confirmed 3 fatalities caused by the eruption. Two people died after their houses collapsed under the weight of ash. All of the victims were in Pandasari village less than 7 km from the volcano where 20 cm of ash has fallen.
By late afternoon Friday, ash had spread farther across the island and was falling on the large highlands city of Bandung, more than 500 kilometers away. The government volcanology center said it was uncertain whether ash would also reach the capital, Jakarta, more than 600 kilometers away.

Poás Volcano Erupts in Central Costa Rica (Feb 25)
A webcam from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) captured the moment a dark cloud exploded from a massive crater of the Poás Volcano.
The research institute, affiliated with the National University of Costa Rica, said the blast was a phreatic explosion which occurs when magma or hot rocks heat surface water to the point where it boils and quickly explodes in a burst of stem.
Earlier this month, Costa Rica's National Seismological Network (RSN) released a report saying that the volcano’s crater was glowing red-hot with molten rock and was emitting sulfur.
The Poás Volcano, a frequently visited tourism site, is one of the country's most prominent natural landmarks.
It is located in a national park of the same name in the Alajuela Province.

Marapi Volcano Erupts in Indonesia (Feb 26)
Powerful bursts of ash, sand and gravel erupted from the volcano located in Tanah Datar and Agam districts at 4.15 p.m. Jakarta time, Warseno, the official in-charge at the observatory post of the volcano, told Xinhua.
However, the height of the column could not be determined visually as visibility was impaired by haze enveloping West Sumatra due to forest fire in the neighbouring province of Riau, he added.
The authorities have closed the area within a three-km danger zone from the crater as the volcano is on third-highest alert level, he said.
So far, the authorities have not recommended any evacuation.
The volcano has had a total of 57 recorded eruptions since January 2014.

Volcanic Activity Update: Etna, Merapi, Marapi, Ubinas, Karkar, Dukono, Batu Tara
March 27, 2014
Etna (Sicily, Italy): During the night, the lava effusion and persistent mild explosive activity from the New SE crater ceased, after being nearly continuously active for over two months. If this is a true end or only a short pause to the latest eruptive phase which on 22 January remains to be seen. The tremor fell back to low levels in correspondence.
Karkar (Northeast of New Guinea): Several ash plumes at estimated altitude of 8,000 ft (2.4 km) were spotted during the past 2 days. This suggests a new eruptive phase could have started at the remote volcano.
Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia): After a relatively long time with no spotted ash clouds, an ash plume was seen yesterday again on satellite imagery (VAAC Darwin).
The remote volcano in the Fores Sea has been site of continuing strombolian activity since at least 2006. Some of the eruptions are strong enough to leave ash plumes that can be seen on satellite images.
Merapi (Central Java, Indonesia): A possibly strong eruption was reported from the volcano this afternoon (13:55 GMT). Satellite data showed an ash and SO2 plume drifting SW at estimated 32,000 ft (9 km) (VAAC Darwin). The plume is quickly dissipating, suggesting that the eruption was an isolated (possibly phreatic) explosion. No other details are at the moment available.
Marapi (Western Sumatra, Indonesia): The volcano erupted again yesterday afternoon at 16:15 local time, the volcano observatory post reported. It appears it was one of the largest explosions during the volcano's current phase of activity. Although the eruption was itself not visible due to cloud cover, the seismic signal showed a strong explosion that lasted 38 seconds and relatively "thick" ash fall occurred shortly afterwards in Batipuh and Tanahdatar districts until 17:45.
... [read more]
Dukono (Halmahera): Activity at the volcano continues to be intense. An ash plume was reported extending 80 nautical miles to the west at 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude this morning (VAAC Darwin).
Ubinas (Peru): The volcano's new lava dome continues to grow slowly within the crater. New field observations published yesterday in a detailed report showed that the lava dome is now approx. 120 m in diameter and has completely filled the inner pit left by the explosive activity in 2006 (as of 19 March). Visible glow (even in daylight) indicates very high temperatures.
No explosions have occurred since the vent-clearing explosion on 14 Feb, but the volcano emits a significant plume of steam, SO2 gas and sometimes dilute ash. On 21 and 23 March, the steam-gas-ash plume rose 1800 m above the crater. On 25 March, light ash falls were reported in the towns of Querapi and Ubinas, as well as strong rumbling noises in distances up to 6 km SE. Seismicity remains above background with frequent earthquake swarms related to internal fluid movements.

A team from the Irish Coastguard was alerted and set out to sea from Dingle to conduct an investigation. When they got to the source of the plume, they observed surtseyan eruptions coming out from the sea. It was thought that what is now the Republic of Ireland had drifted away from the volcanically active zone of the mid-Atlantic Ridge millions of years ago, but this does not seem to be the case.

Peru's Ubinas Volcano Erupts, Forces Evacuations (Mar 30)
A volcano in Peru that has not blown its top in four decades spewed more ash skyward on Tuesday, after authorities evacuated villagers to avoid Ubinas's wrath.
The volcano in southwestern Peru blasted back to life causing about 60 villagers from Querapi, near its base, to be relocated Saturday, Ubinas town mayor Pascual Coaquira said.
The director of the Geophysical Institute of Arequipa, Orlando Macedo said that the eruption took place at 7:42 a.m. and gave off ash for one thousand meters.
The volcano, in the south of Peru became active in September of last year, after having been dormant for several years. Nearby village, Querapi was set to be evacuated. The village is located just five kilometers from the volcano.
Macedo said that the villagers were affected by the ash that was emitted from the eruption.
“The wind has blown towards the south, to the residents of Querapi, four kilometers from the crater, and the district of Ubinas, located at six kilometers,” said Macedo.
The 20 families that lived in Querapi were evacuated to the locality of Ubinas last Saturday. They are waiting for the permanent removal of their village to Pampas de Hawái.
"We are readying a shelter for refugees from the blasts," he added Tuesday, noting that the whole Moquegua region was on alert.
"The volcano has been emitting a lot of ash all day, the people in the town (of Ubinas) are having some problems breathing, the mayor added. They have been given masks, he said.
Peru's geological and mining agency (Ingemmet) said lava had been building up in recent weeks, and warned locals they should prepare for the possibility of more evacuations.
In the broader Moquegua area plus Arequipa and Tacna, there are about 40 volcanoes, most dormant.

Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano erupts - April 4
A volcano in central Ecuador has spewed up a column of hot ash and smoke 10 kilometres high.
The volcano entered a new vigorous eruptive phase yesterday evening. A moderately strong vulcanian explosion occurred at 18:10 (local time) and produced an eruption column rising several kilometers as well as small pyroclastic flows on the cone.
Ash / lapilli fall with 1-3 cm diameter clasts occurred in the areas of Bilbao, Choglontus, Chacauco and Cusúa.
The explosion, which likely cleared the conduit from a solid plug was followed by frequent, smaller explosions accompanied by a constant tremor signal of high energy.
When the volcano was not hidden in clouds, the expulsion of incandescent blocks that rolled down the upper flanks, and steam-gas-ash emissions could be observed. Individual stronger explosions also occurred intermittently, some of which rattled the windows and doors of the Tungurahua Volcano Observatory (OVT), located 14 Km northwest.
Activity has been building at the Tungurahua volcano 130 kilometres south of the capital Quito since early February.
On Friday (Saturday Australian time), experts reported a loud explosion that lasted for five minutes and an expulsion of ash.

Five Volcanoes Erupting at Once [Earth Observatory; 14 April, 2014]
Remote. Cold. Rugged. Those three adjectives capture the essence of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Another word—perhaps more applicable than anywhere else on Earth—is “fiery.”
Of the roughly 1,550 volcanoes that have erupted in the recent geologic past, 113 are found on Kamchatka. Forty Kamchatkan volcanoes are “active,” either erupting now or capable of erupting on short notice. The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured activity at five of them during a single satellite pass on April 14, 2014.
From geographic north to south (and top to bottom on this page), the volcanoes are Shiveluch, Klyuchevskaya, Bezymianny, Kizimen, and Karymsky. The tallest of the group is Klyuchevskaya, a stratovolcano with a steep, symmetrical cone that reaches 4,750 meters (15,580 feet) above sea level. The most active is Karymsky, a 1,536-meter (5,039-foot) peak that has erupted regularly since 1996.
Plate tectonics is responsible for the many volcanoes on Kamchatka Peninsula. The Pacific Plate is slowly colliding with and sliding beneath the Okhotsk Plate. As rock from the Pacific Plate descends and encounters higher pressures and temperatures, it melts into magma. Over time, magma accumulates and migrates up toward the surface, causing volcanic eruptions.
Long before the discovery of plate tectonics, Kamchatka’s many volcanoes and eruptions were woven into a rich tapestry of myths and creation stories. According to Koryak folklore, the raven-like deity Kutkh created Kamchatka by dropping a giant feather on the Pacific Ocean. Each of the first generation of men became one of Kamchatka’s mountains at death; many of these mountains became volcanic because the men’s hearts burned so passionately for a beautiful woman that Kutkh had also created near the beginning of time.
In 2013, another NASA satellite collected imagery of Shiveluch, Bezymianny, Tolbachik, and Kizimen.

State of alert for the Mayon volcano (Philippines)
Wednesday, April 16, 2014
http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=it&tl=en&js=y&...
In the last several hours earthquakes are putting apprehension in the population living near the Mayon volcano. The visual observations conducted in the night were not able to detect any glow due to thick clouds that covered the summit of the mountain. Further observations say that the results on the geodetic deformation of the soil indicate variations deflation and a return to average values.
However, the data show that the inclination of building complsso is still swollen compared to last January 2012. Status therefore remains alert level 1, ie abnormal condition. Although this situation does not necessarily magmatic eruption imminent, local authorities are strongly advised to keep a minimum radius of 6 km from the danger zone. Near the volcano, in fact, may occur between taal-and-other-Philippine volcanoes-USGS I, landslides, avalanches, sudden puffs of ash or phreatic eruptions from the summit. In case of inclement weather, you need to pay attention to the fall of the Lahar by its steep slopes. The field measurements showed an increase in the temperature of the water contained in the lake summit (from 30.4 ° C to 31.0 ° C), a decrease in the water level (from 0.51 meters to 0.45 meters) and a decrease in PH (from 2.90 to 2.64). The carbon dioxide found in the Main Crater Lake increased to 675 tons per day compared to 500 tons per day recorded last January. The Mayon Volcano, also known as Mount Mayon, is an active stratovolcano located in the Province of Albay, in the Bicol Region, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Known as the cone "perfect" because of its almost perfectly conical shape, Mayon forms the northern border with the city of Legazpi. It rises to 2462 meters above the gulf of the same name and is the most active volcano in the Philippines. Eruptions are mainly from the central conduit and in the past have produced lava flows at a great distance. Continue...

However, the latter are relatively distant, such as Pagan located 270 km south. The source of the unusual signals that appreaed on 24 April can only be located approximately, and could originate from other seamounts near Ahyi volcano.
For the time being, no other indications of possible volcanic submarine activity have been detected.

In the last 24 hours, the monitoring system of the volcano Popocatepetl recorded 19 exhalations of low intensity.
For most of them yesterday, cloudy conditions did not allow to observe the volcano. A glow , at night, was observed on the crater.
A volcanotectonique event was also recorded at 08:11 pm today, with a magnitude of M 2.1.
At the time of this report, the volcano is covered with clouds, however, in the early hours of the day, it has been observed with continuous emission of steam and gas eastward.

Some possible activity may have occurred on Saunders Island in the South Sandwich Islands today. Satellite imagery from yesterday shows a slight discolouration in the sea just off the northwest tip of the island. Satellite imagery from today shows what appears to be a possible plume originating from the northwest tip of the island and extending towards the northwesterly direction, and it also shows a faint blackened area on the not-so-good-quality image.

Upon contacting volcanologist Boris Behncke, he was of the opinion that it may well be a possible eruption.

NASA catches images of volcanic activity in South Sandwich Islands
- MERCOPRESS
May 6th 2014. The South Sandwich Islands, in the far southern Atlantic Ocean, are often shrouded with thick cloud, making it difficult to view the region from space. Sometimes, however, the use of false-color imagery can be used to reveal events that would otherwise be obscured under cloud cover. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over the South Sandwich Islands on April 19, 2014 and acquired a false-color image of the cloudy scene.
In the north of the image, a thin plume of white rises from the volcano on Zavodovski island, the northernmost of the South Sandwich Islands and streams to the northeast. Further south, a wider white plume can be seen blowing across the Atlantic Ocean. This plume rises from the Mount Michael volcano, which is a young and frequently active strato-volcano located on Saunders Island, near the center of the South Sandwich Island chain.
