"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Multiple Eruptions at Ecuador's Tungurahua Volcano Prompts Evacuations (Dec 17)
Repeated explosions are rocking Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano, which is also shooting out chunks of molten rock.

The country's National Geophysics Institute says that a constant plume of gas and ash is rising about half a mile (1 kilometer) above the crater on Monday, with ash falling on nearby communities. Some of those towns are being evacuated for safety.

Numerous explosions occurred in the morning of Sunday with ash rising up to 8 km above the crater. Small pyroclastic flows have descended the flanks and partly heavy ash fall has been affecting nearby areas. Combined with rainfall the fresh ash deposits have a dangerous potential to generate lahars in drainages surrounding the volcano.

Ecuador has issued an orange alert - the second-highest warning level - for towns near the Tungurahua volcano, as its level of activity rose, civil defence officials say.

The area of the warning covers the adjacent provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo, according to the national civil defence agency.

Greater activity has been building since Wednesday (Dec 12), along with a slight increase in gas emissions from the 5029-metre volcano, located about 135km south of the capital Quito, the Geophysical Institute said.

TUNGURAHUA VOLCANO (ECUADOR) BLASTS LAVA HIGH ABOVE CRATER (DEC 19 UPDATE)

Volcano monitors say Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano shot lava 1km above its crater overnight and blasted hot rock and gas nearly 3km down its flank.

The regional director for the government's emergency agency is Lourdes Mayorga and she says officials have prepared shelters and are working to evacuate any people in danger.

The country's National Geophysics Institute said the volcano blasted lava well above its crater overnight and sent out a plume of ash and gas about 1.5km high.

The renewed eruption in central Ecuador began last week and plumes on Sunday rose as high as 5km above the 16,479-foot (5,023-metre) crater.

Activity Increases at Guatemala’s Pacaya Volcano  (Dec 19)
An ash plume from Pacaya, 18 December 2012

Pacaya Volcano, located 47 kilometers south of the capital, has had increased activity in recent days.  On the morning of 18 December, three small explosions of gas-and-ash were detected at the volcano. On 19 December, ash and gas was released into the air, said the Institute of Volcanology (Insivumeh).

On Wednesday, the institute issued a preventive alert and recommended the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conrad) to keep monitoring the 2,500-meter-tall volcano, located between the departments of Guatemala City and Escuintla.

“The activity yesterday [Tuesday] was a manifestation of reactivation, so people should be aware of developments in coming days,” Insivumeh experts said.

Conrad also released a statement on its website that recommends people “to keep informed and be aware of official information provided by authorities.”

The last eruption of Pacaya occurred in May 2010 when a powerful explosion sent ashes to three departments, including the capital, and forced the closing of La Aurora International Airport for five days.

One person was killed, thousands were injured and $500 million in losses were reported.

RISK OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION IN TURKEY (DEC 20)

There is a risk of volcanic eruption in Turkish province of Mugla close to Marmaris, CNN Turk TV channel said on Thursday.

This was stated by scientists of Maltepe University. Some 12 scientists, carrying out research in the coastal Mediterranean area for several months found that there is a risk of an underwater volcano eruption as a result of numerous earthquakes in the area.

A crater was also found at a depth of 25 metres under water.

Turkey is located in a seismically active zone. The most powerful vibrations of the earth's crust in this country occurred in the Marmara Sea in 1999. The magnitude of the tremors was 7.4. About 18,000 people were killed in the earthquake.

Stromboli volcano (Italy) : Strong explosions (Jan 1)

Activity has been at exceptionally high levels recently. During a recent visit, we observed several active vents inside the crater terrace with near-continuous lava spattering and strombolian explosion at intervals of 10-30 minutes, sometimes rich in ash and sometimes ejecting small fountains of glowing bombs. The northeastern vent in particular has been producing powerful and bright explosions of very liquid lava, with ejections into all directions reaching several hundred meters in height and throwing incandescent lava bombs all over the upper crater slope.
These explosions occurred about every 20-30 minutes and caused loud detonations audible (and sometimes visible) in the village and rattle doors and windows.
A very bright glow could sometimes observed above the crater terrace on 30 Dec and suggests that there are intermittent intra-crater lava flows.

Powerful Eruptions Continue on Stromboli (Jan 14)

Increased eruptions from Stromboli sparked fear among inhabitants but geophysicists said the situation was under control.

Strong explosive eruptions from the main NE vent continue to occur at intervals of 30 minutes approximately.

Another collapse of parts of the northern crater rim occurred today around 14:30 local time. Lava continued to issue from the NE cone and forms a lava flow with currently 3 branches, one of which reaches about 400 m elevation. Glowing rockfalls reach the sea.

During the afternoon, small pyroclastic flows generated by material sliding down the Sciara could be seen.

The volcano is active but on Monday there was a particularly powerful eruption and sustained lava flows following four days of heightened activity.

Stromboli is part of the seven-island Eolian Archipelago just off Sicily in southern Italy.

White Island volcanic activity concern (New Zealand, Jan 22)

Volcanic activity at White Island is the most "vigorous" in years and could mean a large explosive eruption is imminent, GNS Science says.

The volcano, off the Bay of Plenty coast, is the country's most active and showed heightened signs of unrest last year.

But it is the increased hydrothermal activity in the last three weeks which is of "significant concern", GNS vulcanologist Brad Scott says.

"I don't think I've seen anything this strong since the late 90s and 2000s."

REVENTADOR VOLCANO (ECUADOR) ENTERS NEW ERUPTION WITH LAVA FLOWS AND EXPLOSIONS (JAN 24)

The volcano has now entered a full-scale eruption. Lava flows descending on the flanks and glow at the summit were observed. A tall steam and ash plume rises 1.5 km above the volcano and drifts west. Additionally explosions have been reported which were heard in the sector of Reventador.
Seismic activity is strong and characterized by strong tremor and explosion signals.

    Super volcano awakening in Italy?

It looks like we may be in for an earth-shattering explosion. A dormant super volcano appears to be stirring under the Phlegraen Fields (Campi Flegrei) of Naples in Italy. Rising soil temperatures and surface deformation in the area have alarmed seismologists. In the distant past, volcanic super eruptions caused global climate change responsible for mass extinctions of plant and animal species.

So far, scientists are unable to model the potential consequences of an awakening super volcano.

Latest studies show that the Phlegraen Fields have actually been swelling above sea level at a rate of 3 cm per month. Micro quakes and large amounts of gases accumulated in soil indicate that the volcano may be preparing to erupt, says Vladimir Kiryanov, Assistant Professor of Geology at the St. Petersburg University.

    Cleveland volcano

    ORANGE/WATCH 2013-02-06 12:34:31 - Daily Update
Elevated surface temperatures were detected in satellite images of Cleveland over the last 24 hours. The aviation color code and volcano alert level were changed to ORANGE/WATCH earlier today based on evidence that a new dome has formed in the summit crater of Cleveland. The dome is about 100 m in diameter and presumably formed starting January 24, 2013 when elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite images.

The development of a lava dome in the summit crater indicates that sudden explosions of blocks and ash are possible with little or no warning. Ash clouds, if produced, could exceed 20,000 feet above sea level. If a large ash-producing event occurs, nearby seismic, infrasound, or volcanic lightning networks should alert AVO staff quickly. However, for some events, a delay of several hours is possible. There is no real-time seismic monitoring network on Mount Cleveland and AVO is unable to track activity in real time.

Explosive Eruption at Paluweh Volcano [Earth Observatory: 12 Feb 2013]

Although the summit of Indonesia’s Paluweh (also known as Rokatenda) is shrouded by clouds, evidence of a recent eruption is visible on the slopes of the island volcano in this satellite image. After months of rumbling, an explosive eruption occurred on February 2 and 3, 2013. Gray ash from the eruption covers the southern slopes of the peak in this natural-color image. A lighter gray swath running from the hidden summit to the ocean traces the path of a volcanic landslide, likely the remnants of a pyroclastic flow. A brand-new delta extends into the Flores Sea at the foot of the flow. To the northwest, airborne ash swirls around the island. Green vegetation appears relatively untouched, but ash has destroyed many of the island’s crops, according to the Jakarta Globe.

Erik Klemetti, author of the Eruptions Blog, suggested that the eruption may have been caused by the collapse of an unstable lava dome. The number of small tremors and emissions of ash at Paluweh increased in October 2012, and continued into February 2013, perhaps indicating growth of the lava dome. This image was collected on February 12, 2013, by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite. According to the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC), Paluweh has experience minor ash and gas emissions almost daily since the initial blast.

Barren Island (Andaman Islands) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barren Island (coordinates: 12°16′N 93°51′E) is located in the Andaman Sea, one of the most easterly of the Andaman Islands. It is the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia. Along with the rest of the Andamans, it is a part of the Indian Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and lies about 135 km (84 mi) northeast of the territory's capital, Port Blair. The first recorded eruption of the volcano dates back to 1787. Since then, the volcano has erupted more than ten times, with the most recent one which started in September 2010 and continued through January 2011.

After the first recorded eruption in 1787, further eruptions were recorded in 1789, 1795, 1803–04, and 1852. After nearly one and half century of dormancy, the island had another eruption in 1991 that lasted six months and caused considerable damage. There were eruptions in 1994–95 and 2005–07, the latter being considered to be linked to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.

Mount Etna's Dramatic New Eruption caught on video

Italy's Mount Etna sent lava and gas shooting toward the stars early this morning (Feb. 19), the first big eruption for the volcano in 2013.

The famous Sicilian volcano burst to life overnight, sending a fountain of fire into the air. The dramatic scene was captured in a video by Klaus Dorschfeldt, a videographer and webmaster at Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes, had emitted signs of an imminent paroxysm in recent weeks. On Jan. 22, lava and strong flashes in the volcano's New Southeast Crater were clearly visible from the Sicilian foothills; these often herald a new paroxysm: short, violent eruptive bursts.

Dorschfeldt said he knew Mount Etna's recent signals could precede new activity.  "[I've] followed the activity of Etna for many years, and with time you learn to know it as if it were your friend," he said in an email interview. "Following it constantly [you] learn to be a keen observer and a minor change can lead to something important," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

Fumes From Montserrat Volcano Raises Health Alert (Mar 7)
Pungent fumes drifting over Antigua from Montserrat’s volcano sparked alarm yesterday, prompting disaster chiefs to issue a health alert.

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) told OBSERVER media that staff had received a number of calls from concerned members of the public complaining about a stench of sulphur.

Director Philmore Mullin said a change in wind had blown gases from the Soufriere Hills volcano over to the island.

He advised residents with sensitive eyes, or who suffer from asthma or other respiratory illnesses, to stay indoors.

Sulphur dioxide is irritating to the eyes, throat and airways. It can cause a burning sensation, difficulty breathing for those with pre-existing conditions, and tightness in the chest.

Mullin said, “We received several calls from people complaining about a foul smell, something like sulphur, so I called our counterparts in Montserrat and they confirmed there had been a wind change and fumes from the volcano were now coming our way.”

He continued that emissions were not unusual for this time of year and that there was no immediate need to panic.

“If you stand outdoors long enough and stick your tongue out, you will definitely get a sulphur taste.

“People with respiratory issues may see some moderate attacks and if you have sensitive eyes, you could also feel burning.”

The NODS director said there was a chance the gas could bring on an asthma attack.

International guidelines suggest prolonged or repeated exposure to sulphur dioxide can be dangerous for people with pre-existing heart and lung diseases.

Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador issued Monday lava fountains emanated in its crater and clouds of steam and ash, according to what reported Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School.
In addition there has been ashfall in Choglontús sectors and El Manzano, in the southwestern flank of the mountain, as remarked Daniel Pacheco, one of the scientists of Guadalupe Observatory, which controls the behavior of the volcano located in the Andes , across the country.
Pacheco also noted that there have been loud noises as "bellows" that are common and have been heard by residents of the places near the volcano.
He called Tungurahua activity as "estrombolina" in reference to his behavior like Italian Stromboli crater, which means that throws hot rocks emerging from the volcano and fall and roll half a mile away.
The Tungurahua has about five thousand 23 meters high and is located in the Cordillera of Ecuador and 140 kilometers south of Quito, the capital.

Mount Etna Eruptions Intensify, Town Buried in Ash (Apr 3)

The ninth eruption of Mount Etna in 2013 began this morning with loud rumbles felt over the entire eastern Sicily from Syracuse to Messina.  The explosions are perceptible even several kilometers away in the province of Catania.  The Strombolian eruptions are currently intensifying with the first high lava fountains, and the production of a cloud of pyroclastic material, which is being pushed by the wind to the south-east.

Zafferana Etnea, a small tourist town in the province of Catania with 9,450 residents, was hit by a heavy rain of ash and volcanic rocks by a powerful eruption on April 2 which blanketed the town in thick black volcanic debris.  Photos

Locals said they heard the explosions and felt violent shaking.  They said the air was humid, the sky went dark and there was no visibility. The Italian locals now have a massive clearing job to do as roads, gardens and rooftops were covered in up to ten centimetres of ash and stones.   Workers use special equipment to blow away the ash and collect solidified lava.

The damage was assessed “incalculable” and the region and the neighbouring municipalities have declared a state of emergency.  When the ash gets wet it takes on a cement-like quality and turns waterproof — causing flooding in streets and houses.

One of Azerbaijan's largest volcanoes erupts [APA; 08 April 2013]

A lot of cracks appeared in the territory as a result of volcano, one of the cracks spread out over 2 km

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. Akhtarma-Pashali volcano in Hajigabul region of Azerbaijan has erupted, head of the ANAS Institute of Geology's Mud Volcano Department Adil Aliyev told APA.

He said the eruption was recorded on April 1. The scientists of the Institute of Geology have carried out research in the area:

“This is one of the largest volcanoes of Azerbaijan. Volcano is located 35 km from Shirvan city - in the south-eastern Shirvan. The volcano erupted for the first time in 1948, this is the 7th eruption.”

Aliyev said that along with mud the eruption also spouted a great deal of various rocks. “The volcano mud covered 18 hectares, the total area is 220 000 cu m. The average thickness of the spouted material is 120 cm. A lot of cracks have appeared as a result of the volcano. One of them is too big. It spread out over 2 km. The depth of the crack is 2 m, width between 30 – 80 cm. At present the volcano has calmed down. Usually flames are observed when mud volcanoes erupt. No flame is observed in this volcano,” he said.

According to the department chief, the diameter of the volcano is about 10 sq km meters: “Several volcanic areas separated from each other are located in the crater of eruption. Every time eruption occurs in a separated volcanic area. 21 percent of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan pull a lot of oil out of surface. This volcano is also spewing oil. Oil soaked into all wastes. It should be noted that there was also oil shale. All of them will be studied in the laboratory and concrete information about the oil and gas resources of the area will be obtained after the tests.”

The Director of the Division of INGV Catania, Domenico Patane, confirmed that "this time is not a paroxysm, is an actual eruption. Early April already had indications that something was changing and a few days ago we had a very long pre-eruptive activity, began in the afternoon and 8 April 2013, with ash explosions that lasted until the afternoon of April 10, when it changed to strombolian explosions. During yesterday afternoon activity gradually increased to become almost continuously at night, with loud explosions and explosions and emissions of two small lava flows from the crater rim and the south-east of the "saddle" between the two Southeast crater cone. ""The last eruptive phase of this type, reminds us Patane occurred between May 2008 and July 2009 at the eastern base of the crater to the northeast."

Another picture that comes from the situation in the Etna. As you can see, we have a much higher activity than we have seen recently in the Sicilian giant

This is the aspect that now presents Etna from Catania. There are reports of major explosions at the summit and ashfall important in areas like BELPASSO

    ETNA- APRIL 25 2013

Since yesterday, Mount Etna’s SE Crater has been emitting pulses of ash at regular intervals. The eruptive tremor and seismicity are still at relatively low levels but the situation may change rapidly. As Borris Behncke (INGV Catania) put it after the last paroxysm, the “preludes” are getting shorter and the volcano may erupt without warning.

    * Explosive Eruption at Paluweh Volcano [Earth Observatory; 19 April 2013]

Sporadic eruptions from Paluweh (Paluweh volcano, also known as Rokatenda, forms the 8-km-wide island of Paluweh north of the volcanic arc that cuts across Flores Island. Although the volcano rises about 3000 m above the sea floor, its summit reaches only 875 m above sea level. The broad irregular summit region contains overlapping craters up to 900 m wide and several lava domes. Several flank vents occur along a NW-trending fissure. The largest historical eruption of Paluweh occurred in 1928, when a strong explosive eruption was accompanied by landslide-induced tsunamis and lava dome emplacement.) Volcano have been sending ash and volcanic gases into the air since late 2012. This natural-color image was acquired by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite on April 19, 2013.

    DETAILS OF THE EMERGENCY

Rokatenda, an active volcano located on Palue Island in Sikka district in the province of East Nusa Tenggara, erupted again on 23 March 2013 and continued until the next day - 24 March 2013.  The ash plume caused considerable impact to the villages of Nitlung and Rokirole as well as other villages on the slope of the volcano causing families to evacuate their homes.

Volcanic activity has been observed since October 2012 with significant increase of ash and material erupting from the volcano forcing the affected communities to evacuate.  The continuing volcanic activity has prevented them from returning to their villages.

Based on the official data from the National Agency on Disaster Response (BNPB) on 25 March 2013, since October 2012, 2,472 people have fled to camps in Maumere (the capital of Sikka district), 1,552 people to nearby towns, and 831 people to Maurole in Ende district.  Assistance provided since the eruptions started in October 2012 has not been sufficient to meet the most basic needs of the displaced communities.  If this situation continues and sufficient attention is not given to provide for needs such as health services to the IDPs, conditions will deteriorate further and casualties will increase.
