Several lanes at the intersection of Windhorst Road and Parsons Avenue in Brandon remained closed for the indefinite future as county workers tread carefully in determining what caused a section of the roadway to collapse July 19.
“We have to be really careful at that intersection because there are lots of utility lines in the area,” said Hillsborough County spokesman Patrick Murray. "We have a sewer line and a water line there and we have to make sure there are no other utilities, so we have to be careful drilling.”
At the scene, late afternoon July 22, barricades were seen at the intersection, with drilling under way.
Crew workers first believed a 16-inch sewage pipeline beneath the intersection might have caused the collapse of the 6-foot-square section of roadway on July 19, according to a county report.
But the sewer line was dug up and found to be intact. Now the county is testing the intersection for sinkholes — but carefully, as Murray noted.
Additional detours and lane closures are possible as crews dig up the line for inspection and any necessary repairs.
Motorists who must travel through the intersection are warned to expect delays.

Thyagarajanagar building collapse kills 22-year-old
Bangalore Mirror Bureau | Updated: Nov 11, 2018, 09:56 IST
Rescue work was underway till late in the night
Six families in the adjacent building have been evacuated as a precautionary measure
A 22-year-old youth died after he was trapped underneath a partially collapsed residential building on Ist main Sai Mandir Road near Sai Baba temple in Thyagarajanagar late Saturday evening.
The construction of ground plus four floored building was almost complete, but a major disaster was averted since it was unoccupied. Two workers, including the victim, identified as Sohail, was present at the site when the incident took place.
They were doing some welding work outside the building and Sohail was asked to go into the basement to switch off the machine when the building caved in. A huge pit had been dug in the tiny plot adjacent to this almost completed residential structure to make one more building which is being suspected to be the reason for the ground to cave in bringing the building down. The building at present is leaning on to another ground plus three storeyed structure adjacent to it.
A major disaster was averted as there were no workers inside the collapsed building and none of the occupants of the adjacent building were also hurt in the mishap. As many as six families living in the adjacent building have been evacuated as a precautionary measure till the collapsed building is removed. “We have spotted Sohail’s body but it is caught between a pillar and since the entire building at the moment is leaning on to the adjacent structure, we will have to carefully retrieve it,” said a rescue personnel.
As many as 50 firemen and 35 members from both state and national disaster response force were engaged in rescue and clearance work at the time of going to press. “It is suspected that the mishap was caused when an attempt to construct one more building in the vacant plot next to the building. We have to check of necessary permissions from taken,” said an official. Initially it was suspected that there were four people trapped under the debris but later rescue personnel claimed that there was only one person trapped under it.

Road washed out after collapse in St. Francis County
ST. FRANCIS COUNTY, Ark. —The wet weather is taking a toll on road in the Mid-South. So far, it’s caused potholes, sinkholes and streets to collapse.
A driver in a van was on County Road 311 in St. Francis County around 2 a.m. Tuesday when the road gave way. The van was hanging by it’s bumpers on both sides of the road.
“It was chipping away at the dirt underneath it. There was a lot of water going through there,” James Bradford, supervisor with The St. Francis County Road Department, said.
Bradford says there were no injuries.
The county has ordered two culverts to replace the ones that were displaced. They estimate repairs should be complete by Feb. 22, 2019 for a total cost of $25,000.
We’re told the van had to be towed after it fell into the below ravine.

Roof collapses on Montana State University campus
by NBC Montana Staff Thursday, March 7th 2019
MISSOULA, Mont. — Part of the roof at a Montana State University fitness center in Bozeman collapsed early Thursday morning.
The collapse occurred at the Marga Hosaeus Fitness Center used by students.
The Bozeman Fire Department says firefighters were called around 2:20 a.m. and found a partial roof collapse on the backside of an unoccupied building.
There was no fire, but broken heating pipes were releasing steam.
"It was an unexpected situation," said MSU spokesman Michael Becker. "We are immensely grateful that, if it was going to happen, it happened when it did, when the building was barely occupied."
One maintenance worker told NBC Montana he was on the roof a few days ago, and the snow was up to his waist.
Becker added that it's too early to say what the cause is.
"We have to wait for the assessments from the engineers to come back to find out what exactly what the status is for the rest of the building before we can even begin looking at reopening," Becker added.
The school notified students via email and text.
"Actually, it's a lot worse that I thought it was going be," said sophomore James Olechowski. "I was like, 'Well, might as well check it out, since I'm not getting any gym in today.'"
"I was very upset," said student Sabine Byrne. "This is where we usually come and now -- can't work out here anymore."
Students are being asked to avoid the area until further notice from MSU.
The school is making arrangements for those who had classes at the fitness center.
Brick Breeden Field House is only accessible through the south entrance at this time.
There were no injuries and the fitness center has been closed. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.

Three killed in Kampong Cham after balcony collapses
Publication date 08 April 2019 07:29 ICT
Deaths caused by the collapse of a balcony at a housewarming party rose to three on Sunday, while nine people injured in Saturday’s incident in Sdoeung Chey commune’s Khna village in Kampong Cham province’s Cheung Prey district remained hospitalised.
The house owner and host of the party was identified as Srun Bros, deputy district police chief Yem Sophal told The Post on Sunday.
The victim who passed away immediately was identified as Nhil Pok, a 70-year-old woman from Khna village, while the two who died in hospital had yet to be identified.
“Bros built his own house as he is a house builder. He spent nearly two months building it at a cost of more than $10,000. I do not know what techniques he used on his house, but he has built others for people and there have been no problems with those."
“I do not know yet who is to take responsibility and pay compensation. The house owner is deeply saddened and we are further investigating,” he said.
Neither Prak Sarom, Sdoeung Chey commune chief, nor Lanh Leang, the commune’s police chief, nor Bros were available for comment on Sunday.
A Cheung Prey district police report said the balcony collapse occurred at 9:45am on Sunday. A 7mx12m wooden building and a metre-and-a-half area of concrete in front of the house were damaged in the incident, as was a tuk-tuk, a motorbike and a bicycle.

Two dead after buildings collapse in militia-controlled Rio neighborhood
RIO DE JANEIRO, April 12 (Reuters) - At least two people died and two more were injured when two unlicensed buildings in a militia-controlled outer borough of Rio de Janeiro collapsed on Friday, just days after deadly rains caused chaos in Brazil’s second largest city.
It was unclear why the four-story buildings, located in the western neighborhood of Itanhangá, collapsed. Locals said at least four families were living in the buildings, which were undergoing construction. An unknown number of people were still missing, locals and officials said.
“Two people were injured and two were killed, and teams are on the scene looking for survivors who may be buried,” a fire department spokesman said.
The mayor’s office said the two buildings were irregular constructions, which had not been authorized. Brazilian cities underwent rapid and mostly unplanned urbanization in the last six decades, giving rise to vast shantytowns, erected haphazardly without adhering to building codes.
Powerful militias - originally created to defend inhabitants from drug gangs, but which now act as fearsome local crime outfits - have a strong presence in the neighborhood where the buildings collapsed. Militias often control gas and electricity services, but now make huge profits by stealing land and illegally selling it for construction projects.
“As (the region) is dominated by militias, the technicians of the municipal inspection office usually require the support of the military police to carry out inspections there,” the mayor’s office said in a statement, adding that it had shuttered several unauthorized constructions nearby last November.
A man who said he was a resident in one of the buildings told reporters that he made it out after hearing a snap.
“I managed to escape, but there were people left behind,” said the man, who declined to give his name.
The buildings collapsed just days after Rio de Janeiro was hit by record rains that caused severe damage across the city. At least 10 people died in the storm on Monday night, which led city authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Half Of Road Collapses After Cracks Appear
This is the moment half of a multi-lane road disappears down a construction pit hours after workers discovered cracks forming underneath it.
Footage from the city of Nanning, capital of China’s southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, shows the construction site’s retaining wall giving way on 8th June.
It happened at 6pm local time, just six hours after workmen noticed cracks emerging on the surface of eight-lane Dongge Road, which has four lanes going in either direction.
By 2pm, construction was halted and personnel were evacuated from the pit, where the foundations of a multi-storey building were still being laid.
Footage taken from a nearby tower block shows half of Dongge Road then collapsing and tonnes of earth pouring into the excavated land.
Officials said no one was injured during the accident, which affected a road section 60 metres (196 feet) long and 15 metres (50 feet) wide.
According to reports, minor cracks in the road surface had been discovered a week earlier, but they were not serious enough for work to be stopped.
Authorities have sealed off the west-to-east section of Dongge Road and are working to reconstruct the retaining wall, which they say had been warped due to erosion caused by a leaking pipe.
Heavy congestion has already been reported in the area, with traffic having been diverted away from the thoroughfare.
Officials did not reveal who the construction site belongs to whether the owners would be held liable for the incident.

Huge hole after bridge, roadway collapse in Licking County
Wednesday, June 19th 2019
LICKING COUNTY, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) — A pickup trucker driver likely got a huge scare Tuesday night during the storm. Workers said the guy came across a collapsed bridge and roadway on Deeds Road near Granville, his front tires slipping off the pavement in the dark.
Crews were called out to repair the rural road of State Route 37.
Licking County Engineer Jared Knerr said all the rain is taking a toll on some roads across our area. The road and bridge on Ramp Creek collapsed and left a thirty-foot wide hole. The road is closed and traffic is being detoured.
Knerr said the bridge had been inspected in the past year and no issues were found. “The pipe itself has some damage on the underside, the inside, which again, didn’t show up on our inspection. So it has just happened recently as well,” Knerr said.
Salina Thrasher lives next to where the collapse happened. Thrasher joked that if we get more rain she might have to build an ark for her goats, chickens, and pet turkey named Fred. Thrasher said the rain came down so hard and fast the asphalt just crumbled.
“A big hole. It looks like there’s been an earthquake and the road just fell in,” said Thrasher.
Crews worked to cap off a natural gas line on the site. They will remove the damaged pipe. Knerr said they would look for a concrete box culvert to replace the damaged section. That may take weeks or even months. People who live in the area are not looking forward to the inconvenience of the road being closed. No word yet on what the repairs will cost.

13 armymen among 14 dead in HP building collapse
As many as 14 people died and 28 others were injured after a multi-storey building collapsed in Himachal Pradesh's Solan district, officials said on Monday.
The bodies of 13 Army personnel of 4 Assam Regiment from nearby Dagshai Cantonment and a civilian were extricated from the debris, they said.
28 people, including 17 Army personnel and 11 civilians, were injured after the four-storey building, which housed a restaurant, collapsed on the Nahan-Kumarhatti Road on Sunday evening following heavy rains.
The rescue operation ended at about 4 pm on Monday, Solan Additional Superintendent of Police Shiv Kumar told PTI.
He said initial investigation has found that the structure was not built up to specifications.
"A magisterial inquiry has already been ordered. Strict legal action will be taken against erring persons after getting the report," he said.
The CM said a first information report has been registered against the owner of the building.
"There are more such buildings in the state. Owners have constructed them without following building by-laws. Whatever is required to be done, will be done to check it," he said in response to queries by the media.
"Necessary equipment was airlifted on Sunday evening itself through a helicopter from Shimla's Sunni to carry out the rescue work by the NDRF," Thakur added.
Deputy Commissioner K C Chaman said Solan Sub Divisional Magistrate Rohit Rathore has been directed to conduct the inquiry into the incident.
An injured soldier told reporters from the hospital that when the building collapsed, there were 35 Army personnel inside it, of whom 30 were Junior Commissioned Officers.
He said Army personnel belonging to the 4 Assam Regiment of nearby Dagshai Cantonment went to the restaurant "to party as it was a Sunday but suddenly the building shook and collapsed in no minutes".
Another injured person Rakesh Kumar, said that about 50 people, including several Army personnel, restaurant staff and other customers were in the building when it collapsed.
"We thought it was a quake and did not know how the building collapsed and we were trapped under the debris. I remained trapped for about 10-15 minutes after which some people rescued me," he added.
The Army, Central Reserve Police Force and police initially carried out the rescue operation.
Subsequently, two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams -- one from Haryana's Panchkula and the other from Shimla's Sunni -- reached the spot Sunday night to carry out the rescue work, Director-cum-Special Secretary Revenue and Disaster Management, D C Rana told PTI.
A third NDRF team from Panchkula joined the rescue operation on Monday morning, he said.

5 confirmed killed after building collapse in north Nigeria
ABUJA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Five persons were confirmed killed after two residential buildings collapsed in two different locations in Nigeria's northern state of Jigawa on Monday, said a local official.
The two incidents in Kirikasamma area of the state occurred following days of torrential rainfalls, said Salisu Garba-Kubayo, head of the local government.
Garba-Kubayo said three persons from one family died after their house suddenly collapsed in the village of Kuraduge, while two others, a man and his wife, died after their house collapsed in Madachi village in the same area.
The local official told reporters that following the persistent rainfall, over 30 villages in Kirikasamma had been taken over by flood.
At least 330 houses were destroyed by the floods, he added.
On Aug. 7, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which is responsible for issuing flood alert, issued an alert over possible flooding due to the high intensity of rainfall across the country.
The hydrological body said the flooding incidents are due to high rainfall intensity of long duration, rainstorms, blockage of drainage systems and poor urban planning resulting from the erection of structures within the floodplains and waterways.
This year, Nigeria's 36 states and the federal capital territory, Abuja, would witness different levels of flooding, the hydrological body predicted. Enditem

Block of flats collapses in southern China after ‘sinking into ground’
1:55pm 28 Aug, 2019
Emergency workers sealed off a building in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen after it collapsed on Wednesday morning, local authorities said.
At around 11.20am, a block of flats in Luohu district suddenly sank into the ground and leaned to one side, the Shenzhen government said on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter.
“Before it happened, the local community office heard noises coming from underground, and evacuated residents. Right now there are no casualties,” the Weibo post said. “The case is being investigated.”
In a short video published by state broadcaster CCTV, a residential building appears to have sunk into the ground and leans on the neighbouring building, with bricks and concrete strewn on the ground.
The area was closed off as police, ambulance crews and firefighters attended the scene.
The authorities also evacuated residents from surrounding buildings, moving them into temporary housing. A panel of experts began to investigate the cause of the collapse, while water, gas and electricity supplies were cut off in the area and construction work was halted as a precaution.

After the collapse of parts of the building, three people from the construction site remained unaccounted for, the New Orleans fire chief said on Saturday.
Parts of a Hard Rock Hotel under construction in New Orleans collapsed Saturday morning, killing one and injuring at least 18 others, a city official said. There are three people who remain unaccounted for.
The New Orleans Fire Department received reports of a collapsed building around 9:12 a.m., Chief Timothy McConnell said in a news conference on Saturday. The top six to eight floors of the building were affected, he said.
Chief McConnell and other officials repeatedly warned people to stay away from the area, noting that the structure and that a 270-foot crane remained unstable and still might collapse.
Nineteen people were assessed for injuries at the scene, 18 of whom were transported to area hospitals, he said. All were are in stable condition.
There were no reports of any injuries of people on the ground around the construction site.
Additional information on the person who was killed was not immediately available.
“Obviously, it’s a very serious situation here on Canal Street,” Gov. John Bel Edwards said at the news conference. “I’m just asking for everybody to lift up in prayer those who are at the hospital” and people who were “unaccounted for.”

Southsea's damaged seafront promenade collapses
19 December 2019
A section of Southsea's promenade has collapsed as work gets under way to stabilise the sea defences.
The sea wall near the town's naval memorial was damaged by strong winds and high tides in November.
Its latest collapse is in an area already identified as dangerous by Portsmouth City Council where emergency repair work is taking place.
The council said 10m (32ft)-long sheet piles were being driven into the beach to protect the area from more damage.
The emergency works are due to be complete on Friday and further repairs will resume in the new year.
A permanent solution which involves rebuilding 4.5km (2.8 miles) of sea defences is expected to begin in 2020, pending approval by the Environment Agency which will unlock government funding.
Portsmouth's deputy leader Steve Pitt said: "We are aware that our current sea defences are no longer fit for purpose and close to the end of their maintainable life.
"Incidents like this underline the need to move forward with our new defence scheme as soon as possible."

Massive water tower CRUMBLE in Indian village, leaving 15 communities without drinking water 23 Jan, 2020 02:11
https://www.rt.com/news/478943-india-water-tower-crumble/
An immense water tower serving over a dozen villages in India catastrophically gave way, instantly crumbling to pieces and releasing thousands of gallons of H2O. Those hoping for rain may have gotten more than they bargained for.
The moment of the sudden collapse was captured on film by a resident of Sarenga – a small community in the state of West Bengal – on Wednesday, as startled spectators looked on in shock. Though constructed only four years ago, the foundation of the water tower appears to have given way under its own weight.
“We suspect that the soil loosened, resulting in the collapse of the tank. Investigations are going on and the exact cause will be found out,” an official of the Public Health Engineering Department told PTI, asking not to be named.
Fortunately, nobody was injured in the mishap, though it did leave some 15 villages without a supply of drinking water in lieu of the huge 700,000-liter tank. The construction company that originally built the tower is now expected to replace it, according to the terms of a five-year contract with the local government, the official said.
