Several lanes at the intersection of Windhorst Road and Parsons Avenue in Brandon remained closed for the indefinite future as county workers tread carefully in determining what caused a section of the roadway to collapse July 19.
“We have to be really careful at that intersection because there are lots of utility lines in the area,” said Hillsborough County spokesman Patrick Murray. "We have a sewer line and a water line there and we have to make sure there are no other utilities, so we have to be careful drilling.”
At the scene, late afternoon July 22, barricades were seen at the intersection, with drilling under way.
Crew workers first believed a 16-inch sewage pipeline beneath the intersection might have caused the collapse of the 6-foot-square section of roadway on July 19, according to a county report.
But the sewer line was dug up and found to be intact. Now the county is testing the intersection for sinkholes — but carefully, as Murray noted.
Additional detours and lane closures are possible as crews dig up the line for inspection and any necessary repairs.
Motorists who must travel through the intersection are warned to expect delays.

Construction Worker Killed in Historic Building Collapse
Ypsilanti, MI -- The first floor of a historic building in Michigan collapsed, crushing a construction worker in the basement.
The fire chief reported that there were workers in the basement when the first floor collapsed on them. This happened at 12pm on Monday.
Emergency responders quickly pulled the man out of the basement. He was completely covered in debris. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he died as a result of his injuries.
The building was a former Civil War barracks. It was damaged in a fire in 2009, and is now being converted into retail and loft space. The first floor was set to be demolished at the time of the collapse.

What is happening in Tooting? ANOTHER sign crashes onto street just yards from today's billboard collapse
From AM to PM: Two signs have collapsed just metres from one another
Another sign has collapsed in the centre of Tooting today, just yards away from the scene of a billboard collapse which pinned a woman to the ground.
This is the scene in Tooting tonight where a sign, which was situated above K&K Stationers, has crashed onto the path below, in Mitcham Road.
In the background of the photograph you can clearly see the wall of Age UK which was the scene of another sign collapse this morning.
The woman was pinned to the floor by the billboard thought to weigh at least a tonne. She was taken to St George's Hospital where she was treated for hip and leg injuries.
Witnesses said that the latest sign collapse took place at 9.40pm this evening and just missed a couple of people.
Graveney ward Councillors tonight called for safety checks on signs and billboards in Tooting after the second incident.

Heavy rains cause road to cave in Hancock County
May 18, 2015
HANCOCK COUNTY -- Two sections of Old Kiln Road in the Leetown community caved in several feet Saturday night after heavy rains flooded the area.
The cave-ins occurred between North Bienville Road and Katie Drive in a section of roadway that was constructed over a culvert, Emergency Management Agency Deputy Director John Evans said.
"It looks like the rain just washed away a lot of the dirt underneath it," Evans said.
No one was injured during the collapse.
South Mississippi received an average of about 2 inches of rainfall over the weekend and left several roads and low-lying areas flooded.
County Road Manager Vic Johnson said that area of Old Kiln Road received about 14 inches of water.
The culvert was already slated for an expansion project prior to Saturday's collapse.
Road crews have blocked all lanes of the road and secured the perimeter of the cave-in to keep people away from the hazard.
County supervisors are consulting with their engineer to determine when repairs can begin.

Rescuers hunt residents of SW China collapsed building
GUIYANG, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen residents from an apartment building that collapsed partially are still not accounted for in Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province on Wednesday.
The third and fourth units of the No. 21 apartment complex in a residential community in Yunyan District collapsed at 11:30 a.m. due to a rain-triggered landslide, said the Guiyang city government.
An initial investigation showed 114 residents from 35 households live in the collapsed sections.
As of 5 p.m., 98 of the residents were confirmed safe. Sixteen others cannot be reached, but mobile phone signals of 15 of them were detected at the scene.
More than 100 rescuers are combing the debris with sniffer dogs and life detectors. A four-month baby was pulled out from the debris and rescued.
A man surnamed Zhang who lived on the ground floor was pulled out by rescuers. He told Xinhua that he was awakened by loud noises. He was about to run from the building when he was buried by falling debris.
Another resident who declined to give her name was worried about her daughter-in-law. "She lived on the ninth floor," she said. "I called, but couldn't reach her."
Residents of nearby buildings were evacuated after the accident.
In a separate case, seven were killed after a loess hill landslide buried nine people in four farmers' houses in north China's Shanxi Province on Tuesday evening. One was rescued and in stable condition. One remains trapped.

15 people rescued, 30 trapped as building under construction collapses in Kisumu
Rescuers attempt to remove debris from a building that collapsed Wednesday evening in Kisumu's Manyatta estate. At least 30 workers were feared trapped while five others were taken to hospital with serious injuries. PHOTO | SILAS APOLLO | NATION MEDIA GROUP
At least 15 people were rescued after a shopping mall under construction collapsed on Wednesday evening in Kisumu.
Eight people, among them a school pupil, were rushed to hospital in critical condition.
The 4pm incident left 30 construction workers trapped in the rubble of the collapsed shopping mall, which was under construction.
By 10pm on Wednesday, 15 people had been rescued, according to the police.
Gunshots rent the air as the police dispersed the crowd at the scene, as it was slowing down recovery operations. The ensuing stampede left a child critically injured.
Three bulldozers were on the site ploughing through the rubble to recover bodies believed to have still been trapped.
Police working together with locals, Red Cross volunteers and the National Youth Service led the recovery operations.
Area OCPD Musa Kongoli, however, said it was not clear how many people remained trapped in the building as that would only be ascertained once the recovery was complete.
HAVING LUNCH
The workers are said to have been having a late lunch at the time the building collapsed.
Mr Raphael Otieno Omollo, a survivor said he shouted when one column of the house fell down at about 4pm.
In the confusion, some of his colleagues escaped. Those who did not hear his alarm were the ones who were trapped in the rubble.
“The house was almost complete and we were on the last floor. I was downstairs when I saw a column fall. I then shouted and before I could run away, the whole building fell trapping my colleagues,” he said.
According to Mr Omollo, the owner of the building had disappeared and could not be traced.
Ms Leah Auma, an eyewitness, said women who were supplying water to the site could also have been trapped inside the building.
Leaders from the county, among them governor Jack Ranguma and his deputy Ruth Odinga, visited the scene.
There was a problem of lighting initially as a blackout hampered the operations before the fire fighters provided generator-powered floodlights.

NZ: Prison officer trapped after cars' landslide plunge
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/69094695/lucky-break-after-cars-sin...
A claw hammer was used to smash a rear window and free the Milton prison officer from his Ford Falcon, which was one of two vehicles that rolled off Highcliff Rd and into a deep hole caused by a landslide on the Otago Peninsula on Wednesday night.
"I was coming home from work, it was raining still quite heavily and it was foggy. I know that road pretty well, I came around the corner and the next thing I was tipping over, I didn't know what the hell was going on."
McCone thought he may have slid across the road, and braced himself for a 100 metre plunge down the bank. Instead, it was a short fall into a section of road – 15m long and 2m deep – that had dropped away.
"If I rolled one more time I would have been on my way down the hill."
In complete darkess, he wriggled his way to the rear end of the car and tried kicking in the back window to no avail. He grabbed his cellphone - no coverage.
"I was thinking 'God I could be here for a long time', so I leaned on the horn for about two minutes and no one came to that."
Help did arrive moments later, but not quite in the way he expected.
A second vehicle, a green Mazda carrying a father and son, also dropped into the carved out southbound lane, landing on top of his car with a thud.

School building collapses, over 360 escape death
Saturday, 06 June 2015 15:12
Over 360 pupils escaped death when 15 classrooms of The Seat of Wisdom International School collapsed on Friday after a down pour at Afrancho Bronkong in the Kwabre West District of the Ashanti Region.
The accident happened later in the evening when the rains had subsided for the kids to rush back to their various homes
The foundation of the 2 storey building has been left exposed following an excavation conducted on an immediate neighbouring land which is believed to be for church construction.
Some residents claim to have witnessed enough and proper building materials being invested into the construction of the school building.
Proprietor of the school Mr Jude Boateng says the collapsed section of the structure hosts 360 pupils but the school received over a hundred pupils from a sister school for a football match on the same day.
Most of the pupils who had come for Saturday classes as of the time TV3 News got to the scene had returned home but one recounted the loss of books.
Residents are blaming authorities for given out the land for the acclaimed construction of a church next to the school.
Parents who talked to TV3 News are fearful of the lives of their wards
Meanwhile staff members of the school are calling on philanthropists and the general public to come to their aid for the provision of temporary wooden structures for teaching and learning from Monday.

Downpours collapse street in Dixon, Illinois
Monday’s heavy downpours caused a street to collapse in Dixon, Illinois, forming a gaping hole that spans sever feet wide and deep.
The area of Seventh Street and Walnut Avenue remained blocked with road closure signs on Tuesday. The galvanized culvert that allowed the creek to pass below Seventh Street couldn’t handle the massive amount of water it took on after Walnut Street began to flood. The road eventually took on too much water and collapsed.
Newly elected Mayor Li Arellano toured the damage Tuesday afternoon, while admitting the culvert had “rusting.” Arellano said he ran his campaign on fixing the city’s infrastructure, and he plans on using the collapsed road as an example for what needs improvement.
While Arellano said this event was hard to predict, a special meeting will be held on Thursday to discuss the repairs. He expects the bill to me more than $100,000. In addition, he said the city will likely begin evaluating and replacing other culverts throughout the city.
Down the street, Lou Cecchetti and his family begin to throwaway their belongings that were damaged during the flood. The rising waters filled his basement with water, destroying thousands of dollars worth of items. Cecchetti said he found out his insurance won’t cover the damages, but says he’s just happy nobody was hurt.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Allentown police say a 50-foot section of retaining wall collapsed along the Lehigh Parkway Saturday morning. According to police, the collapse happened around 9:15 a.m. along Park Drive while it was raining. There is no word on if the rain led to the collapse. No one was hurt.
The section of the wall that collapsed was built in the 1930s and was in the process of being remodeled. The wall separates the road from a steep slope as it descends into the parkway. Part of the roadway was also damaged in the collapse. As a result, the Lehigh Parkway entrance off of Jefferson Street is closed until further notice. He said they've replaced the pipe and are working to fill in the hole.
He expects the process to take about three hours.
SCDOT workers said this is the second time in recent weeks there's been a cave-in near Wells Street.

Twelve Dead in China Factory Collapse
Twelve people died after a shoe factory collapsed in eastern China, state media reported Sunday, with more than 40 escaping on their own or being rescued.
More than 50 people were in the four-story building in the city of Wenling in Zhejiang province when it came down on Saturday afternoon, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Thirty-three suffered injuries, four of them serious, the report said. Nine others escaped unharmed, it added.
The cause of the collapse was being investigated.
"There was no premonition," the report quoted worker Yang Zhongkun as saying. "I heard a 'bang' and saw the building collapse."
Yang added that water flowed down from a large fishing pool on the roof of the building, while other employees said leaking water was reported before the building gave way, Xinhua said.
A total of 53 fire trucks, 302 rescuers and five rescue dogs responded to the collapse, the report said.
Photos circulating on Chinese social media showed a man being carried on a stretcher by what appeared to be police officers, while rescuers and other personnel stood on top of the rubble.
Building collapses and other industrial accidents are not uncommon in China, where many structures and facilities are old, safety procedures can be lax and rebuilding has not kept up with the country's remarkable economic growth.
China's top safety watchdog in May blamed poor construction and weak safety standards for a fire at a nursing home that left 38 people dead.
In April, almost 30,000 people were evacuated after a fire broke out in a Chinese chemical plant which blazed for nearly 50 hours before the flames were finally extinguished.
And in November, a fire at a coal mine in northeastern China killed 26 workers, in one of the country's most highly accident-prone industries.

Residential Building Collapses in Perm, Killing 2
A section of a five-story apartment building collapsed in the Russian city of Perm on Saturday night, killing two septuagenarians and injuring four other residents, the Interfax news agency reported.
"Six people were affected by the collapse: two have died, two were treated on the spot, and two people were hospitalized in moderately grave conditions," Health Ministry spokesman Oleg Salagay told Interfax.
Both of the victims were reportedly in their twilight years — one, who died in the hospital, was born in 1938 and the other, whose body was found amid the rubble of the fallen building, was born in 1941.
Interfax reported that renovations of an office on the first floor of the building — which could have taken a toll on its load-bearing capacity — may have been to blame.
A criminal case has been launched on charges of rendering services that failed to meet safety standards. The executive director of the organization responsible for maintaining the Soviet-era brick building was detained and interrogated Sunday morning.
Residents were quickly evacuated from the building, though some have already been permitted to return home based on investigations of different sections of the building.

Russian military barracks in Siberia collapses into rubble, kills 23 men trapped inside
MOSCOW — The ceiling of a Russian military barracks collapsed in Siberia on Monday, causing four stories to crumble and killing 23 young men trapped inside.

Nineteen people were injured. Authorities sent 10 seriously injured victims to Moscow for treatment while the Kremlin offered condolences to the families of the deceased.
The defence ministry wouldn’t speculate on the cause of the accident but the footage and video from the scene showed an entire section of the building lying in ruins. Ministry spokesman Gen.-Maj. Igor Konashenkov said the building was renovated in 2013 but he insisted that could not have caused the collapse.

Havana building collapse kills 4
Posted: Jul 16, 2015 12:13 PM EDTUpdated: Jul 16, 2015 12:13 PM EDTHAVANA (AP) -- Cuban officials say a building has collapsed in Old Havana, killing four people.
A government statement published in the Communist Party daily Granma says the two-story building contained two family homes.
The dead include a 3-year-old child, two 18-year-olds and a 60-year-old woman. Three other people sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
Authorities said Thursday they were investigating what caused the structure's "total collapse" the previous day, including whether remodeling being done on the first floor was legal.
The colonial neighborhood contains most of Havana's oldest buildings.
Many are sorely decayed for lack of maintenance and vulnerable to partial or complete structural failures that are regularly triggered by heavy rains.

Nine believed dead in Philippine coal mine collapse: official
Jul. 17, 2015 | 09:09 AM
MANILA: Three people died and six others are believed to have also been killed when part of a coal mine collapsed on a remote central Philippine island Friday, the provincial governor said.
Nine workers were using heavy machinery to remove sea water from the open-pit mine when a wall collapsed and buried the miners, Governor Rhodora Cadiao said.
Heavy rains had also reportedly drenched the area, she added.
"Nine people were buried and presumed dead. We recovered three bodies and we're looking for six more," Cadiao told radio DZBB.
Mining operations were suspended following the incident and an investigation has been launched.
Five people were killed in a similar incident at the mine in 2013.
"Precautionary measures should have been in place," the governor said. "This will undergo (an) investigation. I hope there is no negligence on the part of the contractor."
Semirara Mining and Power Corp., which owns the mine, said it was investigating in coordination with the government.
"Management has condoled with the families of the victims and is giving them full support," it said in a statement.
The open-pit mine is on an island around four hours by boat from the central island of Antique, a fishing province in the Visayas islands, and one hour by plane from the capital Manila

Sinkhole causes Long Grove road to collapse
Diamond Lake Road's crossing at Indian Creek in Long Grove will be closed indefinitely after it collapsed Friday morning, leaving a crater several feet wide.
Larry Savage, an engineer with the Lake County Division of Transportation, said another engineer was driving the area at 8 a.m. Friday and noticed a slight sinkhole.
The drainage pipe that runs under the road is old and rotting, Savage said. Designs to replace the pipe are underway, and replacement was scheduled for August 2016.
But heavy rains Thursday night filled the tunnel and pushed through a rotted hole and into the ground next to the road, Savage said. As the water levels dropped, some of the supporting gravel slid out of place and fell into the tunnel, he said.
Crews were on the scene from 8:30 a.m. until noon cutting open the road and refilling the gravel to keep the road leveled and free of potholes, Savage said.
"It was the weight of the new gravel that caused the pipe to cave in," Savage said. "It was old and in worse shape than we thought. We've had some very intense seasons these past few years."
Those repair crews were still on their way back to the warehouse when a nearby neighbor called and reported the collapse, Savage said. No cars were in the area when the collapse occurred.
Fire Chief Jeff Steingart of the Countryside Fire Protection District confirmed that his crews were not needed at the scene.
The suggested detour involves diverting traffic from Gilmer Road and Route 45 onto Route 83, which runs parallel to Diamond Lake Road.
There is no timetable for when Diamond Lake Road will reopen.
Brooke Hooker, a spokesperson for the Lake County Department of Transportation, said the drainage pipe is of an unusual size and needs to be custom ordered. She said timetables for that type design and purchase are often unpredictable.

A five-storey building collapsed in Vishnu Garden area of west Delhi late on Saturday. According to initial reports, many people are feared trapped under the debris.
"The building in Vishnu Garden (in Khayala) collapsed and we are conducting a rescue operation. Many are feared to be trapped in the debris of the multi storey building," DCP (West Delhi) Pushpendra Kumar said.
Fire department officials said that the collapse of the five-storey building was reported at 9 pm and several fire tenders and rescue teams were rushed to the spot to conduct rescue and relief operation.
In April, two persons including a six-year-old boy were killed while nine others severely injured when the top two floors of a three-storey building collapsed following an explosion in a high-power compressor in west Delhi's Moti Nagar. Eleven persons were rescued from the debris.
The ground floor of the building housed a fan-assembling unit where a compressor was installed for painting the manufactured fans. It was this compressor which caused the blast.

I-10 closed at collapsed bridge in Desert Center
http://www.desertsun.com/story/news/2015/07/19/desert-center-bridge...
The Tex Wash bridge, built on the eastbound I-10 in 1967, was listed as functionally obsolete in the 2013 National Bridge Inventory released last year. Essentially, the bridge was listed as no longer adequate for its task, though it was not listed as having known structural problems that needed to be fixed.
A black truck was driving east on I-10 when the bridge crumpled beneath it about 4:45 p.m. Bystanders used straps from their cars to tie the truck to a guardrail and prevent it from washing away in the running water below. The passenger was able to get out but the driver had to be rescued. Firefighters went into rapidly rising water with asphalt and debris falling around them to pull the driver out by 7 p.m.

All canal-side roads are ready to collapse, officials say
ABOVE: A canal-side road in Pathum Thani province split open on July 9. Photos: MCOT
Highway officials warned yesterday that all canal-side roads are in danger of collapsing as waterways across the country are drying up.
Motorists were urged to drive slowly with caution alongside canals, while truck drivers were advised to find alternative routes, according to highway authorities.
A number of spectacular incidents have seen roads split and torn apart as the soil dessicates, settles and shifts due to the drought crisis, notably in Saraburi province and a sinkhole earlier this month on Bangkok’s Phetkasem Road. Then there was the river that ate a woman’s house.
Road inspectors will survey risky areas, officials said, while residents near canals were asked to report any issues to officials via hotline number 1146.

The Leaning Towers Of Guangxi: Dramatic images show apartment buildings tilting dangerous backwards on verge of collapse
China has a new leaning tower but it's not a tourist site.
A block of apartments in Guangxi Autonomous Region, southern China, started tilting dangerously backwards on August 2, reported People's Daily Online.
Three residential buildings, all between three and four stories high, were involved in the incident.
No injuries were reported.
The apartments in Guangxi Autonomous Region, southern China, started tilting backwards on August 2
Roads adjacent to the buildings have also started breaking away. The buildings have now been sealed off
The buildings have now been sealed off by the local government. Residents of the building had to be evacuated.
According to an unnamed shop owner living in the building, the building started to tilt around 9pm local time.
He was watching television when everything inside the house started falling to the floor.
The road immediately adjacent to the building has also started to split.
Remarkably, the buildings haven't collapse despite leaning at a dangerous angle.
Currently local authorities are trying to work out the best way to retrieve the items inside the house as well as stabilising the building.
It is thought that the tilting of the building was caused by external pressures although it is not clear whether this is from adjacent buildings or the road.

August 5, 2015
Seven people lost their lives on Tuesday after a three-storey building collapsed in Canchungo town, 74 km north of Guinea Bissau capital, Bissau, an official source has said.
The country’s Civilian Protection Service told the media “this is a provisional figure since three other people in critical condition are hospitalized and many more are still under the rubble of the collapsed building.”
Although the service did not reveal the number of people still trapped in the building, eyewitnesses told Xinhua there could be about 20 people.
The Guinea Bissau government has created a crisis center to monitor the development of the situation.

First Avenue ceiling collapse injures three
A ceiling collapse at the legendary downtown Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue sent three people to the hospital Wednesday night, and Minneapolis firefighters are evaluating the integrity of the building.
A 30-foot-by-30-foot section gave way during a concert about 10 p.m., the Minneapolis Fire Department said.
“A large portion of the ceiling fell and took out water pipes with it,” said Nate Kranz, First Avenue general manager. “We have no idea why or how it happened. We won’t know anything about this until tomorrow. It was a terrible surprise.”
Kranz said a couple of people were taken out by ambulance. Hennepin County Medical Center spokeswoman Christine Hill said three people were brought into the emergency room and are in satisfactory condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
The ceiling that collapsed was over the balcony DJ booth at the back of the dance floor, Kranz said. A section fell onto the floor about midway through the headlining set by Canadian metal band Theory of a Deadman. The show was stopped, and the 1,000 or so fans were immediately evacuated. Fire crews responding to the club shut off water to the area, the Fire Department said.
Then he saw that a part of the ceiling had fallen and water was streaming from the ceiling.
About a minute later a second piece of the ceiling fell, he said. At first some people thought the water was coming from the sprinkler system, but there was too much for that to be the source.
Jennifer Johnson said the second piece that fell was twice as big as the first, prompting some screams from the crowd.
Mersadees Sten of Gilbert, Minn., drove to town for the concert with her friend Eric Johnson, of Virginia.
A handful of people received minor injuries. One woman near the falling tile was bleeding and immediately tended to by paramedics.
The Mann theater family sold the building in 2000 to First Avenue’s ownership team at the time, including longtime accountant Byron Frank, whose daughter Dayna Frank and their family are the current owners.
Kranz said the club will be closed Thursday, and inspectors will be in the club Thursday morning to determine “how it happened and what to do to fix it so it doesn’t happen again.”
No band was scheduled for Thursday. On Friday, the bluegrass band Ginstrings is scheduled, and Saturday a sold-out show by Grammy winning R&B star Miguel.

Sinking bridge closes 50 miles of I-65 in Indiana
LAFAYETTE, Ind. — An I-65 bridge that dropped 9 inches last week while construction crews worked to widen it has closed 50 miles of a major artery between Indianapolis and Chicago.
And northbound traffic on Interstate 65 will have to take a 60-mile detour around the bridge over Wildcat Creek for the foreseeable future, Indiana Department of Transportation officials said. Traffic is being diverted from I-65 just north of Lebanon, Ind., to U.S. 52, then to Indiana 28 at Clarks Hill and to U.S. 231 at Romney.
"We would hesitate to give any kind of timeline at this time," state highway Commissioner Brandye Hendrickson said. "It will probably be later in the week before we really get our arms around some of the more viable solutions."
An average of 25,000 vehicles had been crossing the northbound Wildcat Creek bridge each day, according to a traffic count conducted earlier this year.
"The full closure of a major interstate is understandably frustrating and difficult to bear," she said in asking for motorists' patience.
Problems first closed the bridge abruptly at about 2:30 p.m. ET Aug. 4 when contractors noticed unusual movement in the bridge, which was being worked on as part of a project to widen the interstate to six lanes from four in the area. Officials believe soil conditions and an underground spring in addition to pile driving that began the previous day caused the bridge to settle.
Since then, state officials opened the bridge, built in 1968, on the evening of Aug. 5 but closed it again Friday when they weren't satisfied with the stability of temporary steel supports. A May 19 inspection rated the Wildcat Creek bridge's substructure, piers and abutments to be in poor condition but other parts of the bridge were considered fair and satisfactory, so it was not closed then.
Last month, an eastbound I-10 bridge over Tex Wash near Desert Center, Calif., collapsed during a major storm after fast-moving flood waters shifted dirt that held its foundation in place. A pickup truck was caught in the collapse, and its driver was trapped for three hours with two broken ribs, a shattered knee and lacerations to his liver.
The bridge about 175 miles east of Los Angeles, which carried about 20,000 vehicles per day and was part of the major link to Phoenix, had received an "A" rating last year, federal records showed.
California Department of Transportation officials reopened that stretch of road July 24. But the westbound bridge is handling traffic in both directions, and state officials said rebuilding the collapsed span would take two months and $5 million.
In Indiana, using the southbound Wildcat Creek bridge to carry I-65 traffic in both directions is not an option, said Will Wingfield, an Indiana Transportation Departmentspokesman. Lanes would be too narrow even before adding a jersey barrier between the lanes of opposing traffic.
No estimate for the cost of repairs has been released.
The route for the detour, although long, was chosen to keep traffic off congested city streets in Lafayette, he said.
Travelers had been spending as long as four hours in jammed traffic though officials added temporary traffic lights at key intersections over the weekend that reduced the drive time to closer to an hour.
A 185-mile trip from Indianapolis to Chicago generally takes about 3 hours, according to Google Maps.
"It is a mess," Roy Westbrook of Valparaiso, Ind., said last week.
Sherman Wood, fleet manager for Fraley & Schilling inRushville, Ind., said truck drivers will be hit in the pocketbook.
"They get paid by the mile, so for every minute they aren't moving, they aren't getting paid," Wood said.
If a delay is long enough, a driver could arrive at a store after it closes, which could mean a next-day delivery and a bigger loss, he said. Long traffic delays also could force drivers to take themselves off the road because they aren't allowed to drive more than 11 hours straight because of federal rules.
Passenger bus services Greyhound and Megabus are telling customers to expect a half hour to an hour delay on routes through Lafayette. Amtrak could not say whether the number of riders on the Hoosier State passenger line from Indianapolis to Chicago has increased since the bridge closed.

Another collapse reported at Shelbyville flume
Another collapse has been reported at a large underground pipe in Shelbyville.
Councilman Henry Fieldhaus said a portion of the flume collapsed Sunday morning between the fire and police stations, likely due to heavy rains over the weekend.
The collapse has caused the fire station, police department and county jail to be without water.
The flume leads the city’s storm water to the Duck River. It’s been in place since 1962.
There have been two previous collapses at the flume this year; one in June and one in January.
“The replacement tube has been manufactured, it’s on a truck on its way here, and we had anticipated starting the replacement process for the first two failures areas tomorrow,” said Jay Johnson, city manager of Shelbyville.
That work was set to cost the city $1.6 million, according to the city manager.
With Sunday’s collapse, the cost can only go up from there.
Fieldhaus says he would like to look into the possibility of getting federal help, by having the part of the flume declared a disaster area.
As of Sunday night the collapse has not been ruled weather related because there is a lot of assessing and investigating that still has to be done.
“This is an extraordinary event and by all indications it was not lack of maintenance or that the tube was in trouble, it appears to be an external event that created this problem,” said Johnson.

18 injured as ceiling of shopping centre collapses
Eighteen people were injured after a section of the interior ceiling of Ramez shopping centre near the Ramada signals on Salwa road collapsed.
A source at the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) said all the victims were brought immediately to the Hamad General Hospital for treatment and no casualty had been reported .
This was also confirmed by Qatar’s Ministry of Interior on its Twitter page. The posting said: “Partial collapse of the roof inside a supermarket on Salwa Road, today. Civil Defense evacuated store without serious injury or death.”
An employee of a nearby establishment told Gulf Times that he saw 12 to 15 people running from Ramez Marketing Co. towards the Al Maha Centre at around 11:30am.
He said police were the first to respond to the incident, blocking the entry to the shopping complex and preventing passersby from crowding the area. All shoppers and staff at Ramez were asked to immediately leave the building.
HMC ambulances, Civil Defence, and Qatar’s Search and Rescue teams also responded quickly to help the injured persons, according to the employee.
“As far as I know Ramez officials had a plan to move. They wanted to leave the current old building and transfer their operations to a new location in Abu Hamour seven months ago, ” he said. “I am not sure what happened next,” he added.
Shops and other business establishments at nearby Al Maha Centre such as Jarir Bookstore, Fifty One East, and Darwish Holdings, which are only a few metres away from Ramez, were forced to down shutters after electricity was cut off to some of the buildings in the area, a number of security guards said.
One of the guards added he thought there was a fire after noticing people running away from the affected outlet. "A few minutes later, a number of rescue trucks were seen deployed to the area."
The staff of another shop in the vicinity said Ramez used to receive a good number of visitors during weekends and there could have been many shoppers at the store when the ceiling came crashing down .

Collapsed signboard causes massive traffic jam
Big obstacle: The collapsed signboard blocking traffic flow in Klang.
KLANG: An overhead signboard near Batu 4 along Jalan Meru collapsed at about 6am yesterday, blocking access to the busy main road usually used by motorists on their way to work.
Cars and heavy vehicles were caught off-guard, causing a massive traffic snarl in the area.
North Klang traffic police officers cleared the debris and directed the traffic after being alerted.
Part of the road was reopened to motorists at about 8am, but there were still crawls as motorists slowed down to look at the collapsed structure.
North Klang deputy OCPD Supt Nor Omar Sappi said a lorry’s tipper rose suddenly and hit the signboard, causing the structure to collapse.
“No injuries have been reported,” he said.

Six hurt as structure collapses on Bryant U. campus
Six construction workers were hurt Tuesday morning as a building under construction fell over on the Bryant University campus in Smithfield.
A pile of steel I-beams and supports lay on the ground after the skeleton of a new indoor athletic center collapsed injuring several people.
A spokeswoman for the private university said workers were erecting the steel frame of a new, Indoor Practice Facility when the structure collapsed. Six workers were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Rhode Island Hospital later reported the six were in good condition.
Smithfield Fire Chief Robert Seltzer says the call came in around 8:15 A.M.
“We’re not sure exactly what caused the building collapse to take place. Currently, everything’s safe at the scene,” Seltzer said. “We got everybody transported pretty quickly.”
A WPRO listener was playing tennis at Bryant when the collapsed occurred. He said he heard a loud noise of steel crashing and then a short time later emergency sirens.
“I thought maybe the crane had tipped over.”
“It was just a creaky sound, we heard a metal sound, a crunching,” said a man who witnessed the collapse did not want to give his name.
“It kept going, it seemed like there was almost like a domino effect. That’s what we felt. We felt the ground shake and everyhing, you know?” he said.
Chief Seltzer said the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration would conduct an investigation.
“The construction just started recently, there were erecting the steel. Obviously something this morning went wrong as they were trying to continue on with their job of putting the steel up and everything collapsed,” Seltzer said.
Two hours after the collapse, Bryant University Assistant Vice President of Communications, Elizabeth O’Neil released a statement saying:
