NEW DELHI — An eight-story building in Bangladesh that housed several garment factories collapsed on Wednesday morning, killing at least 70 people, injuring hundreds of others, and leaving an unknown number of people trapped in the rubble, according to Bangladeshi officials and media outlets.... http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/25/world/asia/bangladesh-building-collapse.html?hp&_r=0

So much happening under our feet.  Daily collapses of roadways due to the severe bow stretch, severe rains, crunching and land subduction all predicted in Zetatalk and all happening now.  Last week in Utah a fatal road collapse killed a 14 year old girl and injured 2.  It's painful to watch the planet crumble but we all knew it was coming.

Buildings collapsing.........a daily happening too.  With responses about what's causing all these happenings ranging from, rain, human error, poorly constructed, yada yada.....BUT, that's not going to fly with people much longer.  As soon as Planet X peers out at us from the sky, people will remember all the things that have happened up to this point and finally somehow, they will connect the dots.  Some will be in extreme denial, others will be so afraid and look for someone to take care of them, and still others will stand up and be counted and prepare as best we could.  There's no wishing this away, there's only pushing forward to a better tomorrow.  While our infrastructure crumbles around us we need to learn to be more careful, tread softly, kiss your kids, love with all your heart.  We are IN IT NOW.

I live in a house built in 1850 and it isn't falling down.  Age does not mean collapse.

100-year-old building partially collapses in Malone

By: Rachael Paradis

A building in Malone that has been standing for more than a century will no longer be a sight in the town. The building on Route 11, well known to many in the community, collapsed overnight. While no one was injured, our Rachael Paradis tells us why the town is in a rush to tear it down.

MALONE, N.Y. -- Neighbors in Malone stood in surprise, took pictures and even shared stories of a once popular tavern that started to crumble early Monday morning.

County Legislator Billy Jones said, "It's an old structure, it was a structure that was obviously unsafe."

The tavern/hotel was built in the early 1900'. It has been closed to the public for about 15 years and was condemned six months ago.

Franklin County Emergency Services Director Rick Provost, "We're unsure what occurred last night at 3 a.m. What we do know is this building has been on our list of buildings with issues."

Jones said, "Old things fall down."

Police closed off part off Route 11 to traffic and to people, out of concern the rest of the building could fall down. Some in the community voiced concern over why this building, along with others like it in the area that haven't already been demolished. Officials say it comes down to money.

Provost said, "The high cost of abatement for these buildings really makes it tough for the county or the village to take those burdens on."

Jones, "We just have to come up with a plan to start taking some of these building down so we don't run into this problem going forward."

The demolition is only expected to take hours, but cleaning up the area is a different issue. Officials say it could be weeks before the site is completely cleared.

LAKE ELSINORE: Water leak causes street collapse

10:00 PM PDT on Friday, July 22, 2011

By GENE GHIOTTO
The Press-Enterprise

Temporary repairs to a section of Joy Street in Lake Elsinore are in place today after a 1-inch water line gave way, causing 80 feet of the roadway to collapse and the asphalt to buckle.

The leak, caused by a 6 to 8-inch diameter tree root, was reported late Thursday in a line that leads to several duplexes on Joy between Machado Street and Riverside Drive, and behind Machado Elementary School.

Water service was restored to the 34 customers early Friday morning, said Greg Morrison, spokesman for the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District.

Water district and contractor crews spent much of Friday removing the damaged asphalt on the southbound side of Joy and laying down a temporary patch. The road was opened in both directions by late afternoon.

"That way the road will be open completely for the entire weekend," Morrison said.

Crews will return Monday and trench from curb to curb to permanently repair the 1-inch line.

On Tuesday, a paving company will remove the patch, put down new base and repave one side of Joy, Morrison said. Work on the other side will take place on Wednesday.

"That way on Tuesday and Wednesday we'll be able to keep on

Windhorst, Parsons Roadway Collapse: Cautious Testing Continues

County workers are testing for sinkholes but the work is proceeding methodically because of utility lines at the intersection, according to a Hillsborough County spokesman.

Several lanes at the intersection of Windhorst Road and Parsons Avenue in Brandon remained closed for the indefinite future as county workers tread carefully in determining what caused a section of the roadway to collapse July 19.

“We have to be really careful at that intersection because there are lots of utility lines in the area,” said Hillsborough County spokesman Patrick Murray. "We have a sewer line and a water line there and we have to make sure there are no other utilities, so we have to be careful drilling.”

At the scene, late afternoon July 22, barricades were seen at the intersection, with drilling under way.

Crew workers first believed a 16-inch sewage pipeline beneath the intersection might have caused the collapse of the 6-foot-square section of roadway on July 19, according to a county report.

But the sewer line was dug up and found to be intact.  Now the county is testing the intersection for sinkholes — but carefully, as Murray noted.

Additional detours and lane closures are possible as crews dig up the line for inspection and any necessary repairs.

Motorists who must travel through the intersection are warned to expect delays.

Sewer collapse closes part of Lexington Road

At least one eastbound lane of Road near Etley Avenue and Cave Hill Cemetery will be closed during Thursday morning’s rush hour after a 48-inch brick sewer collapsed Wednesday evening.

Crews noticed a depression in the road before discovering the sewer had collapsed, and the area will be excavated Thursday morning, said Metropolitan Sewer District Executive   Bud Schardein.

He said it was too early to tell what caused the collapse, but age was a likely factor. That part of the sewer was built in the 1880s and could have been weakened from an unusually wet spring.

“With all the wet weather we’ve had this past spring, that has a tendency to undermine the mortar,” Schardein said.

Road collapse might have killed Colorado family

(2011-07-20)

(wpr) - Engineers say a large section of Wyoming highway where four Colorado family members plunged to their deaths might have totally collapsed in a matter of minutes.

It had been raining for hours Monday night when local authorities warned the Constantinides family, among others, about potential flood conditions near North Brush Creek Campground around midnight.

Not long afterward, the family's van drove into a washed-out portion of Wyoming highway 130 and was swept about 75 yards down Brush Creek. Laurel Constantindies and her three daughters died.

The husband and father, Alex Constantindies, who had grown up in Laramie, survived and escape the vehicle. He and a passerby later rescued Carbon County Emergency management Coordinator John Ziegler, whose car washed out while he was trying to assist in flood protection efforts.

Ziegler said he was "very fortunate" to have survived.

Bruce Burrows of the Wyoming Transportation Department says engineers are studying what happened to the roadway early Tuesday morning. He says preliminary assessments indicate the creek swollen with rain and snowmelt may have undermined the roadway over some hours and then gouged a 25-foot-wide, 9-foot-deep hole in a matter of minutes.

Mall’s road collapses due to adjacent condo construction

A portion of the road leading to Abreeza Mall here in Davao City collapsed Saturday morning.

The ongoing construction of a high-rise condominium adjacent to the mall is being suspected as the reason behind the collapse which luckily happened before the mall’s opening hours.

Luigi Escano, Operations Manager of the Abreea Mall, said that the incident happened around eight in the morning of January 31.

Several meters of the road beside the ongoing Aeon Towers construction collapsed.

September of last year, this same portion of the road also subsided. Escano said the management of Aeon Towers shouldered the minor repairs made on the road that time.

Historic Casablanca Hotel Lincoln collapses, kills one: reports

One person was killed and two were injured in Casablanca on Monday when part of the city's historic but derelict Hotel Lincoln collapsed, local officials and Moroccan media said.

A 34-year-old man died in the dawn incident at the hotel, which is technically a listed building despite been derelict for two decades.

The local Economist news site said another two people were injured in the collapse.

Parts of the Lincoln, of which only part of the original facade remains standing, have been occupied by homeless people.

However, authorities said all those living in the building at the time of the collapse were found “safe and sound”.

Built in 1917 by French architect Hubert Bride, the hotel came to symbolise the Art Deco era that shaped several buildings in the heart of Morocco's economic capital.

Development and property speculation have since reshaped the city and preservationists are increasingly concern about what the fate of the crumbling French colonial facades, neo-Moorish details and Art Deco hotels.

The president of a local conservation group, Rachid al-Andaloussi, told AFP there were plans to save the hotel but that the issue “needs to be made a priority.”

This month, a Casablanca court jailed seven people for two to five years for their role in the deaths of 23 residents when three apartment blocks in the city collapsed in July 2014.

The deceased has been identified as Vinayak Shivaji Patkar (45). Srikant Sadashiv Kamble and Balu Ningappa Ningoji, who were injured, have been shifted to the district government hospital for treatment.

According to Executive Engineer (Civil-South) of the corporation Laxmi M. Sulagekar, who rushed to the spot with her staff, the building collapsed around 1.45 a.m.

There are 21 shops on the ground floor and eight slots of open space have been leased out to private persons. The lease of the ground floor and the first floor expired in 1994 and 2008, respectively. The responsibility of maintenance was on the shop owners during the period of lease. But, the shops continued to operate. The officials could not immediately confirm whether they entered into fresh lease with the show owners. The shops, which were constructed by the corporation, were modified with encroachments on the slab of the rainwater drain, which also collapsed.

The corporation had leased 3,000 sqft open space on the first floor the open space to an individual, who had built a tin-shed roof and other provisions for the restaurant.

Police said all the three persons had escaped with minor injuries after the building collapsed. But Vinayak went inside to take a personal belonging and came under the debris. A case has been registered with the Khade Bazaar Police Station and further investigation taken up.

Building under construction collapses in northern India, killing 13 family members

    February 15, 2015 06:08 AM

LUCKNOW, India - A building under rushed construction in a northern Indian town collapsed overnight, killing 13 members of a family of weavers who were sleeping on the ground floor, police said Sunday.

Three people escaped unhurt when the partially built structure crashed down in the town of Mughalsarai, about 300 kilometres (186 miles) southeast of Uttar Pradesh's state capital of Lucknow.

"People were buried alive" when the building came down, police Superintendent Chandauli Muniraj said.

Twelve people died at the scene, Muniraj said. Two others were taken to a hospital, but one died there.

Muniraj said the building was being constructed in a hurry. "Within a month, they built two stories," he said. "We will investigate the cause of the collapse."

Hundreds of people gathered to watch bulldozers digging into the broken bricks and debris in search for bodies on Sunday. The victims included the building's owner, Mohammad Kamarrudin, and members of his family, including two children under 8 years old, Muniraj said.

Building collapses are common in India, where high housing demand and lax regulations have encouraged some builders to cut corners, use substandard materials or add unauthorized floors.

    18 February, 2015 01:30:00

Algiers- The inhabitants of Abdelhamid Bouteldja neighborhood in Skikda woke up yesterday morning in great panic after the collapse of a part of the main road along the great Mosque, following torrential rains that fell during the night from Monday to Tuesday.

Residents blocked the road to denounce the dramatic situation caused by the rains on several houses on the road, where the water level has reached more than 1.5 m height, according to residents who said they had to spend the night outside.

These call for a sewerage system and protection against flooding. The Mayor of Skikda tried to calm the protesters by promising to support their claims.

Mild temperatures at this time of year have begun to wreak havoc on local roads. The section of Highway 6 one kilometer from the Needles ferry landing  has been closed by crews, effectively cutting the town of Edgewood off from services in Nakusp.

Tasha Hall, photographer and employee at the lumber yard was able to get closer to the damage by asking if she could get in to take photos and spoke with the Arrow Lakes News this morning.

“We were hearing rumblings from some of the drivers starting yesterday, people said they were flying over it (the uneven section of the road) and getting air.”  According to Hall, who works just a few minutes from the site, drivers can still get on the ferry in either direction. They are alternating single lane traffic on the logging road which parallels the highway- but even that could be a hazard.

“You can see the sloughing away along the logging road. The guys said that they are hoping to keep the logging road open for now” Hall said. She estimates about bout 10 crew members are on site assessing the damage and directing traffic.

“The damage is extensive, the water is running under the road. That much damage happened in the last 10 hours and the road is just broken.”

The cracks are 200 feet long. The damage is extensive and may end up with the highway sliding away completely.

“The Geotech is out there right now and we are still waiting for them to make an assessment. It will be updated on the DriveBC website immediately and it only takes 15 minutess for it all to filter through but we hope to have another update at noon,” said a spokesperson for the YRB during a telephone interview with the Arrow Lakes News.

Towering inferno: Britons among hundreds evacuated as fire rips through one of the world's tallest residential buildings in Dubai

    • Flaming debris is seen falling from the skyscraper in video of the blaze
    • Fire started on 50th floor and spread to at least 15 storeys, reports say
    • The building is 336.1m (1,105 ft) tall and has 79 storeys above ground

Britons have told of their terror as hundreds of residents were evacuated from one of the world's tallest residential buildings after it was engulfed in flames in the early hours of this morning in Dubai.

Pictures and video footage showed a large blaze ripping through multiple floors of the Marina Torch tower, a new tower in the expat-heavy Marina district of the city.

More than a dozen fire trucks were able to extinguish the blaze several hours after the fire alarm went off around 2am local time.

A witness told Reuters flames shot out from two sides of the building as glass and metal rained down from near the summit of the 79-storey skyscraper, which stands more 330 metres tall (1,105 ft).

A massive blaze ripped through multiple storeys of the 79-storey Marina Torch tower in Dubai early Saturday.

One British woman, who was sleeping in her boyfriend's apartment on the 72nd floor when the fire broke out, told MailOnline: 'We just thought it was a false alarm at first, so left it for a couple of minutes as it went off at 2am, then when it didn't stop we realised we needed to go down.

'The lifts weren't working so we had to walk down 72 flights of stairs with everyone, that took about 10 minutes as there were people carrying their children and babies and people who just weren't fit enough to get down the stairs.

'We got to the lobby and there were the firefighters but we couldn't exit at first because there were bits of the outside building falling to the floor at the door which were still on fire.

'Then they ran us out in little groups to across the street. And when we got outside we noticed that one of the corners was on fire and was spreading up the building.

'We were just trying to run as quick as we could.'

Main Street in Haysi closed after building collapse

    POSTED: 3:34 PM Feb 28 2015

    HAYSI, Virginia. -

A building collapse closed part of Main Street in Haysi Saturday afternoon.

Dickenson County dispatch says a section of Main Street in Haysi from Bridge Street to Jones and Counts Pharmacy is still closed to all traffic, including foot traffic.

Rocky Wood, chief of the Haysi Volunteer Fire Department, tells News 5 there was damage to a restaurant and a neighboring building when the vacant structure collapsed around 2 p.m.

Wood says the building collapsed on top of a vehicle with two occupants inside. They were not injured. He also says there were people in the restaurant, a pizza factory, but no one was injured.

He told News 5 it could be several weeks until the remainder of the building is torn down and the area is deemed safe, therefore the area is taped off.

The cause of the collapse is still unknown, Wood says, and a building inspector will be out there in the next few days.

Hockey Players Flee as Ice Rink Roof Collapses in Boston (Feb 28)

Nearly 30 hockey players and coaches ran from a Canton ice skating rink, narrowly escaping injury, after the roof began to collapse during an early-morning youth hockey team practice Saturday, officials said.

Children from the Peewee B2 team and the Squirt C team from the Norwood Nuggets Youth Hockey league were warming up on the ice when they heard a loud crack around 7:15 a.m., according to Bill Naumann, the league president.

Coaches told players and parents to run outside, and the roof collapsed within minutes, police said.

The Metropolis Skating Rink, which is located at 2167 Washington St., had serious damage and was deemed unsafe by structural engineers and town officials early Saturday afternoon, according to Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody. Officials had met Friday to discuss concerns about the snow load on the roof and decided to get it removed this week.

Naumann was not at the rink at the time of the collapse, but said he had been checking in with coaches and players throughout the day. These teams are for players ages 9 to 12, Naumann said.

“Everyone was pretty shaken up,” he said Saturday afternoon. “We’re just grateful that no one was severely injured or worse.”

Doody said the scene outside the rink after the collapse was tense.

“People were very aware of how close they came to being seriously injured or killed,” Doody said. “We dodged a major bullet.”

Doody said a “Learn to Skate” class that draws nearly 300 children and parents to the rink was scheduled to begin just a few hours after the collapse.

“If it happened any later, we’d be having a vastly different conversation,” Doody said.

This rink is one of 42 owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, according to a Department of Conservation and Recreation spokesman.

The rink is leased to the town under a 25-year contract. Town officials are responsible for the daily operations, maintenance, and improvements to the facility, the spokesman said.

Doody said the roof of the rink is peaked, so he didn’t anticipate problems with the snow.

“It was very surprising,” he said. “We didn’t think we’d have this problem.”

The spokesman said the rink operator, public works workers, and DCR staff met at the rink Friday to discuss the snow load on the roof. They determined the roof needed to be cleared immediately and planned to bring in a contractor in the upcoming week.

The DCR closed Bajko Rink in Hyde Park; Connell Rink and Pool in Weymouth; Devine Rink in Dorchester; Murphy Rink in South Boston; and Reilly Rink in Chestnut Hill in early February, anticipating possible collapses, the spokesman said.

The Metropolis Skating Rink has been fenced off, and it will remain that way until the spring, when town officials reassess the damage, according to Doody.

As the youth hockey season wears on, Naumann said teams may use rink space from surrounding towns. “The hockey community is a tight-knit community,” he said.

Many roofs have collapsed across the state in recent weeks. More than 180 roof collapses have been reported between Feb. 9 and Saturday, according to Peter Judge, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

At about 4 a.m. Saturday in New Braintree, a man escaped a home on Gilbertville Road after he saw a crack in the wall and suspected the roof would collapse. It caved in shortly after, according to New Braintree Fire Chief Dennis Letendre.

Scaffolding collapses onto double-decker bus in south-east London

This was the scene after scaffolding collapsed onto a double-decker bus in a busy high street in south London.

The precarious structure fell into a route 345 bus which was in service in Peckham at around 11.15 on Monday morning.

There were no reports of injuries in the incident, the London Ambulance Service said.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: "We were called at 11.15 to reports of scaffolding which had fallen on to a bus and a wall collapse in Peckham Road.

"A section of scaffolding had collapsed on to a bus and street furniture."

The incident was over by around 11.50 and there were no injuries, according to the LFB.

The road remained cordoned off at around midday.

Witness Angelo Edades tweeted: "Congestion around Peckham due to bus bringing down a wall. At the moment the wall is being supported by a bus".

A Met Police spokeswoman said officers were called to "guttering" falling from a building. Police were working with the London Fire Brigade after the incident.

Ken Davidson, head of bus operations at Transport for London, said: “At around 11am this morning some scaffolding collapsed on a route 345 bus as it was driving down Peckham High St, at the junction with Basingcourt.

"The bus was in service at the time and there have been no reports of injuries.  We will work with the emergency services who will be investigating this incident.”

The route 345 bus was travelling between Peckham and the Natural History Museum in South Kensington.

75 people inside when roof collapses in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKBN) – Fire crews responded to a report of a fire in the 6000 block of Port Road in Groveport just after 5:00 pm on Sunday.

Upon arrival, crews discovered that a portion of the roof of a warehouse, measuring 40 feet wide and 400 feet across, had collapsed.

Initial reports indicated that firefighters were looking for someone who may have been trapped inside the building, however no injuries have been reported at this time.

Firefighters said the cause of the collapse remains unknown, however some suspect the weight of the snow may be to blame.

“You know anything along those lines is going to be purely speculation at this point, but one would have to believe that the snow and the weather conditions that we’ve seen here over the last couple days probably has something to do with it,” said Madison Township Fire Chief Robert Bates.

Up to 75 people were inside the building, when the roof fell.

A structural engineer has been called to examine the building, which firefighters said will be closed to workers for at least a few days.

Collapsed scaffolding in Sydney's south stabilised as crews try to confirm there are no casualties

Fie crews search the rubble under a collapsed scaffold

A section of scaffolding and wall that collapsed in Sydney's south has been secured by NSW Fire and Rescue, as crews try to confirm whether anyone has been trapped underneath.

Four storeys of scaffolding collapsed on a row of parked cars during demolition works on a building at Bexley North shortly after 8:00am, and fire crews received reports of one person trapped.

A crane has been used to stabilise the wreckage and firefighters are continuing to search the rubble.

"A passer-by stated that they believe someone was trapped under the rubble," Superintendent Tom Cooper said.

"Fire crews are on site at the moment and they're going through the rubble by hand to try to ascertain whether there's anyone that's trapped."

The wall brought down powerlines and crushed three vehicles next to a petrol station on Frederick Street.

One lane of Forest Road has reopened and there is heavy traffic in the area.

Motorists are being advised to check for updates and allow extra travel time.

    VIDEO: Building collapse in Kensington

The roof of a building collapsed in Philadelphia's Kensington section Thursday afternoon.

The collapse was reported just after 2:00 on Turner Street, just off of Hancock Street.

The roof of the old five-story industrial building gave way, collapsing onto the floor below and spilling bricks and other debris down onto the street.

Executive Fire Chief Clifford Gilliam says firefighters removed one person from the third floor, but no one was injured.

The building is owned by a community development corporation in Kensington, and it was being used as offices and art studios. It was also being renovated.

The Department of Licenses & Inspections will work to determine the cause of the collapse.

It's believed that the snow and ice may have played some role, although the ongoing construction may have also been a factor.

Bangladesh building collapse kills five, dozens feared trapped.

    Published

Five workers were confirmed dead and dozens more are feared trapped after the roof of a half-built cement factory collapsed in southern Bangladesh on Thursday, police and rescuers said.

At least six people are in a critical condition after the accident at a building site in the port city of Mongla, local police chief Jahedur Rahman told AFP.

It was unclear how many people were trapped, with Rahman saying no more than 10 people remained unaccounted for, while fire service director Sheikh Mizanur Rahman said up to 40 people might still be under the rubble.

Poor building construction and safety practices have killed many Bangladeshi workers

"We could see some bodies," the fire chief told AFP. "We have to dig carefully as there is a chance some people may still be alive."

The police chief said the cement factory was owned by Sena Kalyan Sangstha, a company run by the Bangladesh Army. The building contractor was a Chinese firm called China National Building Material (CNBM).

Buildings frequently collapse in Bangladesh owing largely to widespread use of shoddy building materials and a failure to abide by proper engineering and construction rules.

In April 2013 a nine-storey garment factory complex collapsed just outside the capital Dhaka leaving at least 1,138 people dead.

TxDOT monitoring crumbling concrete beneath Highway 82 bridge

    Posted: Mar 16, 2015 7:26 PM EDT

FANNIN COUNTY -- The recent rainfall may be good for the environment but in one Texoma city, the soggy weather helped cause some expensive damage.

"It's frightening really," driver Chantel Richardson said.

Rain in recent days, and over the years, is being blamed for the collapse of concrete under the Highway 82 bridge in Bonham.

A TxDOT spokesperson says it appears water seeped into the ground through cracks in the road, washing away and weakening the soil which eventually caused the rip-rap to buckle.

"Now we're having issues with it. They've been out there working on it," Jonell Smith said.

Smith works at Fantasy Tanning right next to the bridge.

"It's kind of scary," she said. "I figured they would close it off though. I don't think people should be going across it right now."

Smith says she began noticing the collapse on Friday, the same day TxDOT says it was notified about the damage. A spokesperson says engineers and a bridge inspector have determined travel on Highways 82 & 78 is safe. But the westbound u-turn lane is closed off.

"It looks awful in my opinion," Richardson said. "People passing by there trying to get back on the other side of 82 and having to just go all the way around. It's awful."

Moving forward, TxDOT says it will monitor the structure daily and will soon begin the search for a contractor to fix the problem for good.

According to an eye witness, James Kabaiku, the building seemed strong and had no signs of collapsing as it had neither cracks nor fault lines.

He further said that he was among the people building the house, but it looked strong and there was no reason to believe that it would collapse.

Retaining wall collapsing at Confluence Project site

    Posted: Apr 14, 2015 10:43 PM EDT
Eau Claire (WQOW) - A major downtown Eau Claire project is just getting off the ground and part of it is starting to crumble.

Workers first noticed cracks in the retaining wall lining the Eau Claire River near the site of the Confluence Project's mixed use building Monday night.

Last year a second wall was built on top of the original wall, which is more than one hundred years old. Project engineers say they thought the original was stable enough to hold the addition. The project's manager says the cause of the collapse is not known at this time and they are studying the issue trying to determine what repairs can and will be made.

"It will add costs to the project or to the engineers or whomever is responsible for it, yes that's true," said Matt Faulkner with Market and Johnson. "We don't know a timeline and we have our team of engineers who originally designed it looking into this wall and what they can do and what our options are for removal and replacement."

If the wall does fall into the river, Market and Johnson would be responsible for the clean up and any costs associated with that. The construction manager says work at the mixed use building should not be affected by the wall's collapse.

2 killed, 12 injured in Chile nightclub building collapse
SANTIAGO: Two people were killed and 12 injured during a concert at a nightclub in downtown Santiago after the building collapsed, authorities said early on Friday.

Seven of the injured had life-threatening injuries, according to a spokesman for the national emergency office ONEMI. They were taken to health centers for treatment.

Initial evidence suggests that the collapse was caused by the building’s capacity being exceeded, according to police.

“It is an authorized club,” Police Chief Hugo Insulza told reporters.

“What happened was that more people were in the club than should have been present,” and part of the building structure collapsed, he added, insisting that no stampede took place.

More than 200 people were taken off the premises by security forces.

“There was a crush of people. Even after the venue reached its full capacity, people kept pushing to get in. That led to the collapse of a containment fence that fell on people inside,” an ONEMI official said.

The club’s administrator was placed under arrest pending an investigation.

A punk concert was taking place at the venue, and an unspecified British band was participating, local media reported.

Hundreds of staff at Royal Courts of Justice and London School of Economics evacuated again as building being demolished collapses injuring a 56-year-old workman
Six-storey structure collapsed this afternoon in Holborn, central London
Site is just yards from where cable fire caused chaos earlier this month
Injury: Police said a 56-year-old man was being treated for injuries this afternoon following the disaster

Hundreds of staff at the Royal Courts of Justice and London School of Economics were evacuated again today after a building due to be demolished collapsed 'like a pancake' injuring a 56-year-old workman.

Workers underneath the six-storey structure fled for their lives after the fifth, fourth and third floors crashed down on to the rest of the building - sending a huge cloud of dust into the air.

The terrifying incident is just yards from where an underground cable fire ripped through Holborn on April 1 bringing parts of central London to a standstill and costing local firms £40million.

Two incidents in a matter of weeks: A map shows where the building collapsed today - not far from the underground cable fire that tore through Holborn on April 1 costing local firms an estimated £40million

Workmen have been on site for around five months and demolition was in progress when the collapse occurred.

Mr Kennedy added: 'There a stretch around 15 to 20m that's collapsed. We've been here since December, the building was seven floors and we've gone down three.

'There's some heavy machinery on the higher floors, we use a machine called a muncher that chews through the walls, it's like a big claw, that may have fallen down.

'There's been a lot of building work around here but this is far enough away I would be surprised if that had anything to do it.'

The collapse of a convention center being built northwest of the Saudi capital left more than 50 workers trapped under rubble on Monday, official media said.

The collapse "happened at noon and resulted in more than 50 workers being trapped", the Saudi Press Agency said, adding that four wounded were recovered from the building site for Qassim University.

Bandar al-Roshodi, the university spokesman, told Saudi television news channel Al-Ekhbariya that the workers were mostly from Pakistan.

"Until now we are searching," he later told AFP.

The trapped workers were of "different nationalities," Roshodi said. Asked about the chances of more survivors, he said: "We have hope, God willing."

Pictures from the scene showed a sprawling but low-level construction site, where many steel support rods had collapsed along with other parts of the structure.

WASHINGTON — Three floors of a parking garage at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C., collapsed on Friday, reportedly trapping at least one person, local authorities and media reported.

The structure suffered a “pancake collapse,” according to a Twitter posting from Washington fire fighters. The complex, made famous by the 1972 political scandal chronicled in the book and movie “All the President’s Men,” is undergoing renovations.

Oscar Mendez, a spokesman for the D.C. Fire and EMS Department, said authorities received reports of one person trapped.

Mendez said units were dispatched around 10 a.m. to the complex, located several blocks from the U.S. State Department. The city’s fire department said the road near the complex had been closed.

Two local news outlets reported one person had been injured.

Representatives for the Watergate could not be immediately reached for comment.

Two workers survive 30-foot fall in Midtown building collapse

ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Demolition workers almost lost their lives Friday when a three-story building in Midtown partially collapsed – with them standing on top of it.

The former apartment building is located on West Pine near Vandeventer. It was being torn down just after 11 a.m. when the front wall and part of the roof came crashing down below. Two men were atop the roof, trying to salvage bricks.

One man ended up buried under bricks on the first floor. The other man was buried in the basement.

And it not for a lot of help and plenty of luck, the story might have had a very different ending.

Remarkably, neither man was seriously injured. They were both able to walk away from the scene of the collapse under their own power.

City building inspectors and representatives from OSHA each visited the site Friday morning.

Workers are speculating the weight of the bricks was too much for the front wall because it had too many large windows, which some believe were added to the house decades after it had been built.

Bellon Wrecking, the company contracted to do the demolition, had no comment on the incident.

Workers were taken to an area hospital and are being treated for their injuries.  The cause of the collapse is under investigation.

Residents of Chinese city baffled as ground mysteriously opens up and large sections of asphalt crumble into the crevasse

    • Remarkable pictures show the moment a road collapsed in Chinese city
    • Large sections of road and traffic lights sank, causing travel disruptions
    • Burst water mains then flooded the surrounding area, adding to the chaos
    • Officials have now promised to investigate how and why it collapsed

Residents of the Chinese city of Guangzhou have been left baffled after the ground mysteriously opened up yesterday, collapsing large sections of road and causing traffic chaos.

Remarkable pictures taken at the scene of the subsidence in southern China show several sections of road having collapsed into the ground.

The incident caused no casualties, but traffic lights, a pedestrian crossing and large swathes of asphalt all crumbled, while burst water pipes flooded over the sections of road left above ground level, according to The People's Daily Online.

Officials and residents were left scratching their heads as to why the road suddenly collapsed

A large section of road sunk into the ground when the land subsidence occurred yesterday

Crowds quickly gathered to look at the chaotic scene (left) as a traffic light was left hanging precariously (right)

Qi Huaien, deputy mayor of Baiyun District, said experts had been called in to identify the cause of the collapse.

There were suspicions cavities under the road had given way due to the recent heavy rainfall.

Large crowds gathered to look at the hole that opened up in the road, while nearby workers shouted at them to stand back.

Not only was the road damaged in the collapse but the burst water pipes added to the problems, as the holes grew larger as time went by and by 4pm, new pits were appearing.

There were two construction sites nearby - one for the construction of a local footbridge and the other for the construction of a new metro station.

However, the metro station site had not yet started digging so it was unlikely to have anything to do with the road collapse.

Workers from the footbridge construction site told reporters that their work was also unrelated to the collapse, with one unnamed worker telling the deputy mayor they had not worked at all the past few days.

Mr Qi told reporters he had called in experts to identify the cause of the road collapse, but the immediate priority was for it to be repaired.

An official from the Baiyun District Construction Department, Mr Liu, told reporters that once the local flooding had cleared they would work to identify the cause and then repair the damaged road.

Mr Liu added that surveyors had been working on site but the chances that it would affect the safety of nearby buildings was low.

An unnamed expert on the scene said: 'The nearby buildings have good foundations so they are unlikely to be affected. However, the buildings without foundations may see some problems.'

    UPDATE: 6:16 p.m.

CSFD says a retaining wall that fell on one of the Phil Long car Dealerships Sunday afternoon was somewhere around 45,000 lbs.

It happened around 1:00 p.m. off Motor City Drive.

CSFD responded to a call of someone smelling natural gas and a retaining wall collapse.

The wall's collapse actually hit a gas line, causing an active gas leak.
Crews were able to get to the meter and shut it down.

Colorado Springs Utilities came out to make sure there were no more gas leaks.

Monday a structural engineer will evaluate the building and determine when they can re-open for business.
