NEW DELHI — An eight-story building in Bangladesh that housed several garment factories collapsed on Wednesday morning, killing at least 70 people, injuring hundreds of others, and leaving an unknown number of people trapped in the rubble, according to Bangladeshi officials and media outlets.... http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/25/world/asia/bangladesh-building-collapse.html?hp&_r=0

So much happening under our feet.  Daily collapses of roadways due to the severe bow stretch, severe rains, crunching and land subduction all predicted in Zetatalk and all happening now.  Last week in Utah a fatal road collapse killed a 14 year old girl and injured 2.  It's painful to watch the planet crumble but we all knew it was coming.

Buildings collapsing.........a daily happening too.  With responses about what's causing all these happenings ranging from, rain, human error, poorly constructed, yada yada.....BUT, that's not going to fly with people much longer.  As soon as Planet X peers out at us from the sky, people will remember all the things that have happened up to this point and finally somehow, they will connect the dots.  Some will be in extreme denial, others will be so afraid and look for someone to take care of them, and still others will stand up and be counted and prepare as best we could.  There's no wishing this away, there's only pushing forward to a better tomorrow.  While our infrastructure crumbles around us we need to learn to be more careful, tread softly, kiss your kids, love with all your heart.  We are IN IT NOW.

I live in a house built in 1850 and it isn't falling down.  Age does not mean collapse.

100-year-old building partially collapses in Malone

By: Rachael Paradis

A building in Malone that has been standing for more than a century will no longer be a sight in the town. The building on Route 11, well known to many in the community, collapsed overnight. While no one was injured, our Rachael Paradis tells us why the town is in a rush to tear it down.

MALONE, N.Y. -- Neighbors in Malone stood in surprise, took pictures and even shared stories of a once popular tavern that started to crumble early Monday morning.

County Legislator Billy Jones said, "It's an old structure, it was a structure that was obviously unsafe."

The tavern/hotel was built in the early 1900'. It has been closed to the public for about 15 years and was condemned six months ago.

Franklin County Emergency Services Director Rick Provost, "We're unsure what occurred last night at 3 a.m. What we do know is this building has been on our list of buildings with issues."

Jones said, "Old things fall down."

Police closed off part off Route 11 to traffic and to people, out of concern the rest of the building could fall down. Some in the community voiced concern over why this building, along with others like it in the area that haven't already been demolished. Officials say it comes down to money.

Provost said, "The high cost of abatement for these buildings really makes it tough for the county or the village to take those burdens on."

Jones, "We just have to come up with a plan to start taking some of these building down so we don't run into this problem going forward."

The demolition is only expected to take hours, but cleaning up the area is a different issue. Officials say it could be weeks before the site is completely cleared.

LAKE ELSINORE: Water leak causes street collapse

10:00 PM PDT on Friday, July 22, 2011

By GENE GHIOTTO
The Press-Enterprise

Temporary repairs to a section of Joy Street in Lake Elsinore are in place today after a 1-inch water line gave way, causing 80 feet of the roadway to collapse and the asphalt to buckle.

The leak, caused by a 6 to 8-inch diameter tree root, was reported late Thursday in a line that leads to several duplexes on Joy between Machado Street and Riverside Drive, and behind Machado Elementary School.

Water service was restored to the 34 customers early Friday morning, said Greg Morrison, spokesman for the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District.

Water district and contractor crews spent much of Friday removing the damaged asphalt on the southbound side of Joy and laying down a temporary patch. The road was opened in both directions by late afternoon.

"That way the road will be open completely for the entire weekend," Morrison said.

Crews will return Monday and trench from curb to curb to permanently repair the 1-inch line.

On Tuesday, a paving company will remove the patch, put down new base and repave one side of Joy, Morrison said. Work on the other side will take place on Wednesday.

"That way on Tuesday and Wednesday we'll be able to keep on

Windhorst, Parsons Roadway Collapse: Cautious Testing Continues

County workers are testing for sinkholes but the work is proceeding methodically because of utility lines at the intersection, according to a Hillsborough County spokesman.

Several lanes at the intersection of Windhorst Road and Parsons Avenue in Brandon remained closed for the indefinite future as county workers tread carefully in determining what caused a section of the roadway to collapse July 19.

“We have to be really careful at that intersection because there are lots of utility lines in the area,” said Hillsborough County spokesman Patrick Murray. "We have a sewer line and a water line there and we have to make sure there are no other utilities, so we have to be careful drilling.”

At the scene, late afternoon July 22, barricades were seen at the intersection, with drilling under way.

Crew workers first believed a 16-inch sewage pipeline beneath the intersection might have caused the collapse of the 6-foot-square section of roadway on July 19, according to a county report.

But the sewer line was dug up and found to be intact.  Now the county is testing the intersection for sinkholes — but carefully, as Murray noted.

Additional detours and lane closures are possible as crews dig up the line for inspection and any necessary repairs.

Motorists who must travel through the intersection are warned to expect delays.

Sewer collapse closes part of Lexington Road

At least one eastbound lane of Road near Etley Avenue and Cave Hill Cemetery will be closed during Thursday morning’s rush hour after a 48-inch brick sewer collapsed Wednesday evening.

Crews noticed a depression in the road before discovering the sewer had collapsed, and the area will be excavated Thursday morning, said Metropolitan Sewer District Executive   Bud Schardein.

He said it was too early to tell what caused the collapse, but age was a likely factor. That part of the sewer was built in the 1880s and could have been weakened from an unusually wet spring.

“With all the wet weather we’ve had this past spring, that has a tendency to undermine the mortar,” Schardein said.

Road collapse might have killed Colorado family

(2011-07-20)

(wpr) - Engineers say a large section of Wyoming highway where four Colorado family members plunged to their deaths might have totally collapsed in a matter of minutes.

It had been raining for hours Monday night when local authorities warned the Constantinides family, among others, about potential flood conditions near North Brush Creek Campground around midnight.

Not long afterward, the family's van drove into a washed-out portion of Wyoming highway 130 and was swept about 75 yards down Brush Creek. Laurel Constantindies and her three daughters died.

The husband and father, Alex Constantindies, who had grown up in Laramie, survived and escape the vehicle. He and a passerby later rescued Carbon County Emergency management Coordinator John Ziegler, whose car washed out while he was trying to assist in flood protection efforts.

Ziegler said he was "very fortunate" to have survived.

Bruce Burrows of the Wyoming Transportation Department says engineers are studying what happened to the roadway early Tuesday morning. He says preliminary assessments indicate the creek swollen with rain and snowmelt may have undermined the roadway over some hours and then gouged a 25-foot-wide, 9-foot-deep hole in a matter of minutes.

Two construction workers were taken to hospital and a bystander was treated for shock after 12 storeys of scaffolding collapsed on a Mascot building site in Sydney.

The incident occurred at lunchtime and the men were at the top of the steel frame when it suddenly gave way.

The two workers rode the structure from the top, all the way to the bottom.

Emergency services were called to the 12-storey building in the city's south-east, just around 1pm this afternoon.

Around 100 people were evacuated from the building site after the scaffolding gave way.

One man has limb and chest injuries, the other escaped with cuts and abrasions.

Workers have told 7News there were few people on site because it was lunchtime, and that the scaffolding was being dismantled at the time of the collapse.

The cause of the accident is not known but a major Workcover investigation is under way.

A CFMEU official says they visited the site just before Christmas in relation to serious concerns about the scaffolding.

Construction had to be shut down for a day while rectification work was carried out.

Power lines were brought down and there were concerns fuel was leaking from vehicles stuck under the collapse.

O'Riordan Street was closed in both directions but has since reopened.

"Motorists travelling to the airport are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time," the Transport Management Centre said.

A concrete beam fell down at the building site, part of the expansion of the Ramathibodi Hospital's Chakri Naruebodindra medical centre near Suvarnabhumi Khlong 4, around noon on Tuesday.

Ruamkatanyu Foundation staff said the fallen beam linked Buildings 1 and 2 on the fourth floor. The beam, 20 by 15 metres and 30cm thick, fell to the second floor, landing on workers who were eating their lunch.

Two bodies remained under the debris. Rescuers said they were pierced by rebar rods.

The building structure at the north end was cracked and all scaffolding bent. Engineers said rescue was dangerous because there was a high danger the entire structure could collapse.

Rescue workers were trying to recover two bodies till trapped in the debris.

Two of the dead  construction workers were confirmed to be Cambodian nationals, reports said.

Mahidol University, which operates Ramathibodi hospital, said in a statement later Tuesday that the cause of the collapse was the subsidence of soil around the elevator chute.

Italian-Thai Development Plc is the contractor and ACSE 110 Consortium is the project superviser.

The university pledged to investigate the accident and ensure compensation for the victims and their families.

5 escape death in Lagos collapsed building

    APRIL 11, 2014 ·

    BY SEYE OJO

No fewer than five persons cheated death when a three-storey building in Ojo Alaba,   Lagos collapsed in the early hours of yesterday.

It was gathered that the first part of the building  still under construction on Adeyemi Street, People’s Bus Stop, Ojo Alaba, collapsed at about 2:00a.m,  but no life was lost.

As gathered, the ground and the first floors of the building were designated as warehouses, while second floor comprised three flats of two bedrooms each.

Residents said the deafening sound of the collapsed building during a downpour on Wednesday night  woke them up. They stated that  the planks for the roofing of the building, had been set, awaiting roofing  with corrugated sheets.

Many of the residents of Adeyemi Street, who did not want their names  in print, stated that no fewer than five construction workers escaped death during the incident.

Some of the construction workers at the site, were said to have been sleeping in the building in the past few months.

“The building did not collapse at once. It was in bits. The first part collapsed at about 2:00am when rain was falling. We heard the loud sound and we all woke up.

“But the workers that slept in the building were lucky. The part of the building where they slept  did not collapse. The first part that collapsed allowed time for them to move out before other parts began to collapse,” an elderly person in the community said.

He also accused some officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) of shaddy deal in marking the house yesterday morning.

“The LASBCA officials did not mark the building until this (yesterday) morning. And they backdated the marking to April 7, whereas the building partially collapsed yesterday, April 10.

“I know that the owner of the building obtained all necessary documents from the Lagos State Government before the construction started. I wonder why the officials of LASBCA would hurriedly come and mark the building this (yesterday) morning. The construction started more than six months ago,” he stated.

Checks revealed that the markings on the fence stated, OJ/7-4-14/LASBCA. Another markings on the main building was, DH/LAS/BCA/OJ.

When Daily Sun visited the scene, neither the owner of the building, nor the engineer that supervised the construction was around. But some workers were sighted on the first floor, using hammers and other construction equipment to clear the debris.

A businessman in the area, Mr. Samuel Nnodim, said it was a surprise that the building collapsed partially.

“There was no reason for it to collapse at all. We need to say the truth. The supervising engineer deployed good construction equipment to the site,” he said.

1 killed, 1 missing in Vienna building collapse

VIENNA (AP) — A residential building in Austria's capital partially collapsed after an apparent explosion Saturday, killing one person and leaving another missing, officials said. Five others were injured.

Witnesses heard a dull thud before the top two floors of the building collapsed, raining debris onto the street in Vienna's 15th district shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday (0800 GMT; 4 a.m. EDT).

"There was a cloud of dust, and lots of people screaming and running," Ted Knops, a 32-year-old resident, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "It was like a science-fiction movie when something comes bursting through the wall."

Police spokeswoman Adina Mircioane said a 19-year-old man who was rescued from the rubble died on his way to a hospital.

"We are looking for a woman in her 50s who is still missing," Mircioane said, adding that the five other people had been treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the explosion was still being investigated, she said.

A video taken by Knops showed a vast plume of dust enveloping the street moments after the incident. The video was reviewed by the AP and along with Knops' description appeared consistent with the police.

Alaskan Ferry Dock Mysteriously Collapses (Apr 24)

The state ferry dock in Skagway, Alaska remains underwater and is closed indefinitely after it sank on early Thursday morning.

"Nobody's really sure what happened... but it was a surprise," says Skagway resident Gary Heger, who was one of the first to see the dock submerged on Thursday morning.

By about 9:30 a.m., the dock was fully submerged and the passenger walkway had collapsed.

The dock, about 40 by 50 metres in size and made up of 24 concrete chambers, is normally used to load passengers and vehicles onto Alaska Marine Highway System ferries.

It's now fully submerged at high tide and partially submerged during low tide.

State transportation engineers and a diver have been on site and are still assessing the damage and what could have caused the dock to give way.

"The word that the engineer used is he's perplexed," says Jeremy Woodrow, a spokesman with the Alaska Department of Transportation, who says the dock is resting on the seafloor.

"We actually have inspected every one of those individual chambers [in the dock] in the last year and there was no indication of any wear."

Yesterday, yellow absorbent boom was laid around the structure.

The Alaska Marine Highway System has cancelled all sailings for the next two weeks.

Woodrow says if the dock can be salvaged, it will take some time before it will be ready to accept ferry traffic.

"We're working with the municipality of Skagway and other marine facilities to see if there's a temporary solution that we can put in place with our ferry system," he says, "or maybe we need to bring in a temporary floating dock so we can restore ferry service."

Eight-storey building collapses in Surat, injures six

     April 29, 2014

Surat (Gujarat), Apr. 29 (ANI): The collapse of an eight-storey building in Gujarat’s Surat has injured six people on Tuesday.

Fire brigade and rescue teams reached the site of the collapse and freed the injured people stuck under the debris as well as the residents stuck on the floors.

“A message was received in the fire emergency control room at 12:55 that the slab of a building in Kanhaiya apartment at Ghod dod road has collapsed. Fire brigade reached the site but the inner compartment of the building from its sixth floor had fallen completely. Six-seven people were stuck in the building. The fire brigade has rescued six people and sent them to the hospital. The work to remove debris is on,” said fire officer of Surat Municipal Corporation, Pankaj Patel.

The building crumpled from its inner portion, thus giving a chance to the residents to escape from the balconies.

Reasons for the collapse are as yet unknown and being investigated but according to primary report, the building might have collapsed due to drill work taking place on the sixth floor.

“Renovation work was being carried out at some flat. And they were removing a part with the help of a drill machine which caused vibrations and the building collapsed. This is according to the preliminary information . But the final report of the engineer will reveal the real cause of the collapse,” said city Mayor, Niranjan Zanzmera.

Three people are reported dead but the news has not been confirmed by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) authorities.

Meanwhile, an investigation is underway. (ANI)

    Road Problems in Mobile County

    BLB FLOODED STREET

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. -  The overnight rains created headaches for folks throughout Mobile County.
Many were left dodging sinkholes and flooded roads Wednesday morning.

Fox Ten News found a deceptively dangerous situation on Hamilton Blvd near San Marino Drive.

Hamilton was closed after someone reported a crack across the road, and water flowing under the highway.

A county worker who came out to inspect the situation fell waist deep into the ground when a sinkhole opened beneath him.

The worker was standing on the dirt just off the road when it happened.
Another worker helped the man out. Fortunately, he wasn’t hurt.

Just about every yard on San Marino was flooded but residents were more worried about the heavy traffic that was being detoured onto to their street from Hamilton.

“They’re diverting all the 18-wheelers with all the heavy stuff on them down our road. This is swamp land to start with. We’re worried about it cracking, then we’re going to be stranded,” Sandy Artry said.

The folks on San Marino won’t have to worry about one 18 wheeler. The driver, Kenneth Weaver couldn’t make the sharp turn. Weaver said he would have to come up with a different strategy.

“It’s too sharp of a turn to make with this long trailer here,” Weaver said.

Our crew couldn’t get to Jessica Breland’s house on Davenport in Bayou LaBatre because her road was flooded. She may have been stranded, but we did spot several people who were willing to drive through the water.

Jyssica Stagner was one of them. Just moments after telling Fox Ten News she felt safe driving through the water covered street she ended up stuck in the middle of the road.

She had to call a friend to get her car out. She said she learned a tough lesson.

“I’m going to say right now, if you don’t got a truck, don’t come through here. It ain’t worth it. It’s not worth losing your vehicle over,” Stagner said.

The rain is gone, but it may take awhile to repair all the road damage.

Fortunately, there haven’t been any reports of serious injuries as a result of the road problems in Mobile County.

Road Collapse Sends Several Cars Onto Rail Tracks In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WNEW/AP) — Officials say a block-long sinkhole opened up in a residential neighborhood in northeast Baltimore, sucking in several cars and forcing the evacuation of several houses.

The fire department tweeted on its official Twitter account that a sinkhole opened up Wednesday afternoon in the first block of 26th Street between Charles and St. Paul streets. The sinkhole opened next to railroad tracks used by CSX.

The block of rowhouses was being evacuated and a building inspector has been called. The fire department said no injuries had been reported.

CSX has suspended rail traffic, according to a fire department tweet. Transportation officials were said to be conducting an analysis of the street.

According to one witness, the site looks like a landslide had occurred.

Rain has drenched central Maryland for more than 24 hours.

St. Paul Street is closed between 28th and 25th streets, and Charles Street is closed between 25th and 26th streets.

Wall collapses in Brooklyn, crushing cars

    Updated at 05:20 PM today
    Residents unnerved after wall collapses

A wall collapsed behind a Crown Heights, Brooklyn, apartment building Friday morning, crushing several parked cars.

The retaining wall collapsed onto a detached parking garage behind a building at 743 Crown Street just after 7 a.m.

The force of the crash crushed at least three cars. No injuries were reported.

The buildings Department will investigate the collapse and whether it was weather related.

Firefighters say all of the rain we've had in the last couple of days mostly likely caused an already weakend wall to buckle.

"It sounded like Brooklyn fell down," neighbor Dionne Willis said. "It was really, really loud...I was just afraid with all the rain that we've been having, already on my own, and then to come see it happening next door to my house, very scary."

Another neighbor was also looking on worried someone might be buried beneath the rubble.

"I came out, there was nobody," Debbie Rubin said. "There was nobody. I said thank you."

Officers used three K-9 rescue dogs to search through the rubble to ensure no one was trapped. Meanwhile, theres no definitive cause has been determined. The Department of Buildings is at the scene, trying to shore everything up with the building to make sure there is no further collapse.

As for the other houses on the 700 block of Crown Street, department officials say everything is OK. They expect no other collapses, but it was a very scary situation for neighbors who heard that big boom.

Building addition collapses atop Somali mall in south Minneapolis

No one was injured Tuesday morning when a portion of a third-floor addition toppled over at Karmel Square.

A third-floor addition under construction at a Somali mall in southMinneapolis collapsed Tuesday morning, shutting down dozens of businesses and knocking out electricity in the neighborhood.

No one was hurt at Karmel Square, where many of the shops were about to open when trusses installed only the day before at the top of the building fell down about 8:45 a.m. Approximately 25 people were evacuated from the building at 2910 Pillsbury Av. S.

Raymond Hoffner, who lives nearby, said he had already complained to the city about the project.

“It was very obvious when they started [construction] that it was very flimsy,” said Hoffner, president of the Park Square condo association across the street.

He said he was in the condo office Tuesday morning when the lights went out and he heard a rumble and sirens. “I was angry,” he said.

Owner Basim Sabri and City Council members involved in the area said it was an accident. The collapse involved what is to be a new floor at the mall featuring a prayer room, shops and a clinic. Construction workers were putting trusses in place late Monday to support a wall, Sabri said, and one on the end was not properly secured.

“It’s like dominoes,” Sabri said. “They fall over each other. … The wind played a big obstacle in what happened.”

The city had approved a permit for the work last month. Sabri has previously tangled with the city over starting other construction projects without approval and has often attracted controversy in hisbusiness dealings.

City records do not appear to show any outstanding code violations for construction work at the building, which is an important gathering spot for the Somali-American community and houses about 150 businesses.

But one Somali-American advocate called for a full investigation of what happened.

“Imagine, it could have happened in the middle of the evening or afternoon, when the place is packed,” said Abdirizak Bihi, director of the Somali Education and Social Advocacy Center. “A lot of people could have been hurt.’’

Crews spent hours clearing fallen debris as police blocked off Pillsbury Avenue. One shopkeeper lamented that the beef, chicken and goat meat at his restaurant was going bad.

“It’s going to spoil the food,” said Mohamud Isse, owner of Uruba Cafe. “They’re not letting anyone in.”

Sabri said late Tuesday that businesses were free to open as usual Wednesday morning, because Xcel Energy was turning the lights back on and authorities had finished inspections. Though he is often full of colorful criticisms of City Hall, Sabri said city staff was “very, very helpful” following the incident.

“For real,” he said. “I’m not being sarcastic.”

Sewage seeps into sea after road collapse

    Sat, 10 May 2014

Part of a cliff-top Kakanui road has collapsed, taking with it sewer and water pipes.

Sewage is now seeping into the sea.

Kakanui's Beach Rd has been closed between Fortification Rd and Gees Rd, with diversions in place, as the cliff continues to crumble.

The first chunk of Beach Rd gave way at about midday, 300m north of Kakanui's Coast Cafe.

No-one was on the section of road at the time of the collapse and there have been no injuries.

Waitaki District mayor Gary Kircher, at the scene, said the cause of the slip was yet to be determined.

"It's a significant amount and now it's starting to come into the seal part of the roadway,'' Mr Kircher said.

"Contractors will be working on solutions as quickly as possible.''

The water pipe which had broken, supplying one farmer at the end of the line, would be temporarily fixed on Monday.

"The sewer pipe is more of a concern in that it carries all of the sewage from Kakanui to the treatment pond,'' he said.

"The short-term solution will be to keep sewage in the holding pond on the Kakanui side of the pipeline and that will need to be pumped out regularly and trucked away for treatment.''

Closure of the road would be a "major inconvenience" for people travelling between Oamaru and Kakanui.

The slip is in a popular paua spot.

"Because some raw sewage has gone into the sea there, I would highly recommend that a temporary moratorium be put in the taking of all shellfish in the immediate area until further notice,'' he said.

With good rock shelving, the area had not been identified as a problem.

''It's not an area where we expected we were going to have problems,'' Mr Kircher said.

Chinese factory wall collapses in heavy rain, killing 18

BEIJING (Reuters) - A factory wall collapsed in heavy rain in eastern China on Sunday, killing 18 people working inside, Xinhua news agency said.

About 40 workers for a renewable energy company in the scenic coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province, were in the factory at the time, Xinhua said, without explaining what the factory made. Three were taken to hospital with injuries.

China, the world's second-largest economy, has a poor record on workplace safety with coal mine disasters a common occurrence.

In June 2013, a fire at a poultry slaughterhouse in the northeastern Jilin province killed 120 people.

In November, an oil pipeline explosion in Qingdao killed 62 people.

Shoulder Of Highway 97 In Walnut Hill Collapses Into 50-Foot Deep Gully

    May 15, 2014

A portion of Highway 97 in Walnut Hill has collapsed in an existing 50-foot deep gully.

The travel lanes of the highway are still intact at the site and the road is still open, just north of South Highway 99 and about mile south of Ernest Ward Middle School. But the shoulder of the road is now at the bottom of the gully.

It appears a large drainage pipe traveled under Highway 97 to the site of the collapse and then curved downward along the bank of the gully where it was designed to drain at the bottom. But the pipe apparently separated under the shoulder of the roadway, just beyond a guardrail, and blew out and undermined the shoulder of the road.

The collapse apparently happened during heavy rains late Wednesday afternoon and was discovered overnight.

Florida Department of Transportation contractor Transfield Services inspected the collapse Thursday morning and determined that it is safe for both lanes of Highway 97 to remain open.

NORTH Korea's state media has reported an “unimaginable” accident at an apartment construction site in Pyongyang, which had resulted in an unspecified number of casualties.

South Korean officials said the incident involved the collapse of a 23-storey apartment building, which already accommodated close to 100 families.

It is extremely rare for North Korea to report negative news of this type, and the dispatch from the official KCNA news agency included equally rare apologies from top officials.

KCNA said the accident had occurred last Tuesday and was the result of “irresponsible” supervision by officials in charge of the construction.

An “intensive” emergency rescue effort had been carried out to rescue survivors and treat the wounded, it said.

The KCNA did not provide a death toll or elaborate on the cause of the collapse, but said it had left Pyongyang citizens “greatly shocked”.

The agency carried lengthy public apologies by senior officials including the Minister of People's Security, Choe Pu-Il.

“(Choe) repented of himself, saying that he failed to find out factors that can put at risk the lives and properties of the people and to take thoroughgoing measures, thereby causing an unimaginable accident,” it said.

A South Korean official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Seoul was aware of the incident which involved the collapse of a 23-storey apartment complex.

“It is common in North Korea that people move into a new apartment building before construction officially ends,” the official told AFP.

The official said 92 families were believed to be living in the collapsed building, and the final death toll was likely to be “considerable”.

About 2.5 million people — mostly political elites including senior party members or those with privileged background — are believed to live in Pyongyang.

Pyongyang residents are known to enjoy better access to electricity, food, goods and other services than those living elsewhere in the impoverished and isolated country.

Navajo Route 367 collapses in Upper Fruitland

Cause of collapse remains under investigation

UPPER FRUITLAND — A section of Navajo Route 367 that some residents worried would collapse finally cracked off and slid down a hill toward the San Juan River.

The road has been closed for more than a year because a section of it collapsed and another portion developed a large crack. And then another portion gave way last weekend.

"I already knew this was going to happen," said Upper Fruitland vice president Lenora Williams.

A road that once carried vehicle traffic is now a sloped jumble of sand, rock, asphalt and blue pipes.

Shiprock Irrigation supervisor Marlin Saggboy suspects the collapse happened Sunday night because irrigation personnel did not report any trouble over the weekend.

This section was repaved after construction of the Navajo Nation Municipal Pipeline, which supplies water to Farmington, Upper Fruitland, San Juan, Hogback, Nenahnezad and Shiprock.

The Bureau of Reclamation installed the pipeline and worked with the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority to complete the repaving.

Williams said she made numerous attempts to have the road repaired and tried asking local chapters to address the situation but no avail.

She also wrote letters to the Bureau of Reclamation, NECA, the Navajo Nation Water Resources Department's Shiprock Irrigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs Road Department.

"None of those entities came or sent a representative, only BIA Roads. I did make an attempt to meet with them to discuss this issue," Williams said.

An irrigation canal runs along the north side of Navajo Route 367. It was not damaged by the collapse, but only a narrow strip of land remains between canal and the damaged area.

The canal is approximately 40 miles long and travels through Nenahnezad, San Juan and Upper Fruitland chapters to supply water to farms that grow squash, cantaloupe, watermelon, corn and alfalfa.

The Navajo Nation assumed responsibility for the canal in 1962 after it was transferred by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Saggboy said water service was turned off in an area north of Northern Edge Navajo Casino.

The shut-off will impact farm land located in Nenahnezad and San Juan chapters until repairs are made on Navajo Route 367, he said, then added that notices were sent to local chapters and announcements were made on the radio about the situation.

Saggboy said there will be a meeting today to discuss how to repair the road but officials from other entities could not provide further details. Efforts to reach BIA Roads Department officials in Shiprock for comment were unsuccessful.

Frank Smith, NECA construction manager, said the road construction was completed according to the design standards and there have been irrigation issues with that area in the past.

"We did some construction there but we are not the ones causing the problem," Smith said.

Doug Dockter, assistant construction engineer for the Bureau of Reclamation, said the cause of the collapse is under investigation and a geotechnical engineer was examining the area on Wednesday.

Brunswick County road washes out creating large gap in roadway

    Posted: May 24, 2014 7:41 AM EDT

    BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

A road washed out in Bolivia, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.  The washout created a gap in the roadway that is about 8ft wide, and 20 ft deep.

Members of the sheriff's office say Sunset Harbor Road is closed between Retreat Road and Zion Hill Road. They are asking people to avoid the area.

Officials say the road had been deteriorating for months and crews had been working on it before it washed out.

In initial reports, investigators said the washout was caused by a beaver dam that collapsed and created a surge of water. They say after investigating further they now believe it was caused by a water pipe that collapsed. They believe the old age of the pipe contributed to the collapse.

No one was injured and no homes were damaged.

Officials say they do not know how long it will take to repair the roadway.

Downtown Calgary Building Crumbling Before Our Eyes (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post Alberta  |  Posted: 05/26/2014 1:05 pm EDT  |  Updated: 05/26/2014 1:59 pm EDT

CALGARY — A hole measuring about six metres by four metres has appeared on the side of a downtown Calgary office building that's been shedding bricks from its facade since last week.

The gaping hole showed up Sunday evening when several large chunks of construction material let go from the Genco building.

There have been no reports of injuries, but the debris heavily damaged an Audi that had to be left in a parking lot when the problem began.

    calgary building

Fire department battalion chief Ernie Molineaux expects the bricks will continue to tumble because of expansion and contraction caused by daytime heating and overnight cooling.

Molineaux told the Calgary Herald more bricks fell between 1 and 2 a.m. Monday.

"Until it's repaired these things will continue to happen," he said.

Molineaux says the building's owners and engineers will have to figure out how to solve the problem.

He told Metro Calgary it's likely crews will "have to strip the back of the building off."

Barricades, including shipping containers and concrete blocks, remain up to protect the public.

This is what the building looked like last week, when a passerby first noticed the bricks coming loose:
