California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico
One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.
The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came," Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.
Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.
All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.
She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.
"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.
Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

Lake Victoria ferry crash: More than 200 feared dead after boat capsizes in Tanzania
Vessel reportedly had capacity of 100 passengers
More than 200 people are feared to have drowned in Tanzania after a ferry capsized on Lake Victoria.
The MV Nyerere ferry sank on Thursday afternoon near Ukara Island, local officials said.
The ferry, which is reported to have a capacity of 100 passengers, was travelling between Bugorara and the Ukala islands, close to Mwanza, Tanzania’s second largest city.
The vessel is understood to have capsized when it was close to docking.
The Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics Services Agency (TEMESA) confirmed the incident in a statement and said rescue efforts were underway.
However they were unable to confirm passenger numbers
Tanzanian newspaper The Citizen reported that 20 people were rescued by fishermen immediately after the accident.
"We pray to God to give us hope in such an accident," Regional Commissioner Adam Malima said, the BBC reports.
"We pray to God to give us hope that there has not been a high death toll."
Ukerewe District Commissioner Colonel Lucas Magembe told Reuters reporters 42 people had already been confirmed dead and that the rescue mission had been halted until dawn on Friday.
The cause of the incident is not yet clear, but accidents are not uncommon on Lake Victoria with overloading and overcrowding frequently found to be the cause

Going, going, GONE! Huge crane crashes to the ground and EXPLODES after out-of-control ferry smashes into it in Barcelona
Footage shows a huge crane crashing to the ground at Barcelona Port after being hit by an out-of-control ferry.
The vessel called Excellent operated by Italian firm Grandi Navi Veloci which was carrying lorries and trailers, hit the the crane at speed after being pushed off course by high winds.
The collision caused a blaze which led to firefighters evacuating the area.
There were no reports of any injuries, although two people are said to have been treated by medics after suffering a panic attack.
The choppy waters are visible as the out-of-control hulk is sped into the crane by high winds
The fire is thought to have ignited after the crane smashed into fuel deposits beneath it on the dock
A local port workers' union tweeted: 'The ship Excellent, operated by GNV Traghetti, has had to abort its docking manouevre because of the bad weather conditions.
'As it was trying to leave the port the wind has pushed it against a crane which has fallen to the ground.'
The fire is thought to have started after the crane hit a fuel deposit behind it as it crashed to the ground.
It affected several containers by the port-side, forcing local authorities to activate an emergency response plan because two of the containers contained dangerous chemicals.
Black smoke rising from the scene of the collision, which happened just after 8am this morning could be seen across Barcelona.
Black smoke billowing from the fire cause by the crane's collapse could be seen across the horizon in Bareclona
In January a huge ferry hit a cruise liner in the same port after apparent engine failure.
The collision between the roll-on roll-off Fantastic ferry belonging to the Italian shipping company Grandi Navi Veloci and the Viking Star cruise ship sparked initial fears a major rescue operation would have to be launched.
Fortunately no-one was injured in the incident on January 13.
Footage of the collision taken by a dock worker showed the Fantastic ferry's stern rammed against the side of the Viking Star as both vessels blasted their sirens.
The Italian ferry had reportedly lost engine power while docking in the port's B Terminal, from Tangier in Morocco.
The Fantastic ferry is said to have dropped an anchor to try to stop its drift without success before it hit the left side of the 750-foot-long Viking Star, which is operated by Norwegian-owned Viking Ocean Cruises and had docked in Barcelona from Valencia with 820 passengers on board ahead of a stop in Marseilles.

At least 11 people die as boat sinks in Suriname
Saturday, December 29, 2018
PARAMARIBO, Suriname (CMC) — The search continued yesterday for survivors after a boat sank on Coppename River, leaving as many as 11 people dead and several others missing.
Portion of article:
The boat sank near the village of Kalebas Creek, about halfway to its destination. Boskamp is a popular trans-shipment point from where passengers can catch the bus to either Paramaribo in the east or Nickerie in the west, both bustling with year-end activities.
The reports say that the boat's departure time may have been unfortunate; it was pitch-dark in the area and a strong wind had been torturing the river.
Village Elder Conchita Alcantara at Kalebas Creek told local Radio ABC that the boat captain had chosen to set sail at that hour because the river was too rough at night, but a “big wave” still caused panic.
“Everybody shifted to one side of the boat, which caused it to capsize. They still tried to scoop the water out, but it was too late. And then a second big wave came that pushed everybody apart, with the dramatic result,” she said.
Alcantra said she had been alerted of the incident around 5:00 am and that she sent out rescue teams to look for survivors.

Boat Sinks in Seribu Islands, Allegedly Due to Bad Weather
29 December 2018 16:34 WIB
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of Seribu Islands harbormaster office, Captain Herbert Marpaung, said a tugboat sailing from Belitung Island to Tanjung Priok sank in the waters of the Seribu Islands on Thursday, December 27.
“The Srimaju 933 tugboat was towing a barge,” Herbert said, Saturday, December 29. The news of the boat sink was previously spread through an Instagram account @jktinfo.
Based on the report stated by the harbourmaster personnel, the boat carried 10 crews. All crews were successfully evacuated and are currently in the harbourmaster office in Marunda, North Jakarta.
Based on the ship's crews information, the accident did not occur in the waters of the Seribu Islands, but in the Java Sea. “About 60 miles northeast of Seribu Islands,” Herbert said.
Herbert added that the weather in the waters of the Seribu Islands and surrounding areas was indeed bad. The harbourmaster has issued a warning to boats that normally operate in the waters of Seribu Islands. “Bad weather is predicted to occur until January 2,” he said.
The head of the Weather Forecast sub-directorate of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Agie Wandala Putra said that 2.5 to 4 meter high waves were likely to occur. In addition, several regions, including Jakarta, have the potential for strong winds.
Until now, the shipwreck of the sinking boat has not been found. Three harbourmaster offices of Tanjung Priok, Seribu Islands, and Marunda, have issued a warning to boats passing around the waters of the Seribu Islands to take cautious measures

Supply boat capsizes, sinks near Pedra Branca
A supply vessel was reported to have capsized and sunk in Singapore territorial waters yesterday morning, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said.
The Dominica-flagged supply vessel, Ocean Cooper 2, was in the westbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme - an international maritime route system to manage ship traffic in busy waters - when it sank about three nautical miles from Pedra Branca, a small island 40km east of Singapore.
The incident happened in the Singapore Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping zones.
MPA received news of the sinking at about 7.15am.
All three Indonesian crew members were rescued unhurt by an accompanying supply vessel, Jolly Rachel, belonging to the same company as the vessel which sank. No oil pollution was reported.
MPA issued navigational broadcasts asking ships to navigate with caution in the vicinity after the incident. MPA, which is investigating the incident, also deployed a craft to survey the wreck.
Traffic in the Singapore Strait remains unaffected
Last month, an undersea cable and pipe-laying ship, the Vanuatu-flagged MV Star Centurion, capsized in Indonesian waters of the Singapore Strait after colliding with a tanker. No deaths were reported in the incident.

'Blood Everywhere': Cruise Ship Tilted By Freak 115-MPH Wind Gust, Passengers Injured
"I kept thinking it can’t possibly keep tipping, and it kept tipping," a passenger said.
March 6, 2019
A 4,200-passenger cruise ship was unexpectedly rocked by an "extreme" 115-mph wind gust off the mid-Atlantic coast late Sunday night, Norwegian Cruise Lines has confirmed, sending the massive vessel into a dangerous list and injuring multiple passengers.
The Breakaway-plus class Norwegian Escape set sail from New York City on Sunday afternoon on a seven-day round-trip voyage to the Bahamas with a stop in Florida along the way. Just hours into its trip, the usual cacophony of chirping slot machines and clattering buffet trays was pierced by screams when a freak wind gust slammed into the ship's starboard side and tilted it at least 20 degrees.
Videos recorded by terrified passengers show people hanging onto whatever solid item they can as tables and chairs slide down the sloping floor. The air is filled with the sounds of glass and furniture breaking, soon joined by the cries of the injured as the ship slowly rights itself after a few minutes of sheer panic.
The exact number of injuries hasn't been confirmed; Florida Today reports a "string" of ambulances met the Norwegian Escape when it arrived in Port Canaveral on Tuesday and transported at least eight people to a local hospital. Social media posts from passengers describe everything from cuts and bruises to broken bones and panic attacks.
"I kept thinking it can’t possibly keep tipping, and it kept tipping. Everything in our room falling and sliding...I have never been so scared in my whole life," passenger Samantha Foster told Crew Center. "Even the cruise director when we came on right after the tilting started, his voice was shaking and he could barely speak. All the plates and glassware smashed on the floor. A lotto machine fell on a lady. Blood everywhere."
"My goodness, we heard glass crash and all the noise. Then from there, the boat started listing even more—and that's when the panic hit," another passenger told Florida Today. "We were looking for the life preservers. And I was looking to jump out the window and jump on the nearest thing around."
In a statement on Twitter, Norwegian Cruise Lines acknowledged the incident and an unspecified number of injuries, but it said the ship itself was undamaged and will continue on its voyage as scheduled. The freak wind gust, rare but not unheard of, was reportedly spawned by the same powerful storm system that generated deadly tornados in Alabama earlier that day.
These super-sized vessels are slightly top-heavy, but not enough to actually capsize in a situation like this. In addition to having advanced, computer-controlled ballast systems, the center of gravity is simply too low thanks to all the heavy mechanical systems lying at and below the waterline. There has never been a case of wind alone taking out a ship of this size, which admittedly offers little comfort when your stateroom is tilted at a 40-degree angle.
The Norwegian Escape isn't the only cruise ship out to run into dangerously bad weather off the Atlantic coast in recent years—a rollicking winter storm trashed the interior of a Royal Caribbean boat in 2016 in roughly the same area. Though no passengers were injured in that instance, the damage was bad enough that the Anthem of the Seas had to return to port. Hey, sure beats norovirus.

Boat capsizes off Mumbai coast, one missing, six saved
The owner of the tugboat, Ravi Kiran Iyer, 47, identified the missing person as Abdul Azeez. He is a resident of West Bengal and has been working on the vessel for the past eight months.
India Updated: Mar 19, 2019 04:41 IST
A 53-year-old man is missing, while six others were rescued after a tugboat carrying them capsized around 12 nautical miles off the Mumbai coast, on Monday. The tugboat, called Revti, and its crew, were hired on a contract basis to work on a sewage pipeline installation in Tarapur, Palghar.
The owner of the tugboat, Ravi Kiran Iyer, 47, identified the missing person as Abdul Azeez. He is a resident of West Bengal and has been working on the vessel for the past eight months. At the time of going to press, a search for Azeez was still on. It is still unclear what caused the accident.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said they received an emergency call at 10:50am. “We reached the tugboat around 11am. We were able to rescue six of the crew members from the sinking vessel, but one person is missing,” said Vineesh Krishnan, the spokesperson and deputy commandant, ICG. The vessel was recently repaired, according to Iyer. “I spent Rs 70 lakh to repair the tugboat a few months ago. It seems something major happened and it capsized,” he said.
An ICG ship ‘Amartya’, a fast patrol vessel on a surveillance mission, was the first to respond to the emergency call. It was diverted to undertake the search and rescue operation.
“One more ICG ship conducted a surface search for the missing crew member, while a Chetak helicopter did a sea-air coordinated search,” Krishnan said.
The condition of the rescued members is stable. They will be investigated by the Yellow Gate police station, the ICG official said.

Tugs tow Norway cruise ship after 463 rescued; 17 injured
STAVANGER, Norway (AP) — More than 450 passengers were airlifted off a cruise ship that got stranded off Norway's western coast in bad weather before the rescue operation was suspended Sunday so the vessel could be towed to a nearby port, Norwegian authorities said.
Five helicopters flying in the pitch dark took the evacuated passengers from the tossing ship in a painstaking process that continued throughout the night. The rescues took place under difficult conditions that included wind gusts up to 38 knots (43 mph) and waves over 8 meters (26 feet).
Some 17 people were hospitalized with injuries, police said.
Passenger Alexus Sheppard told The Associated Press in a message sent from the Viking Sky that people with injuries or disabilities were winched off the cruise ship first. The atmosphere onboard grew calmer after the rescue operation's first dramatic hours, Sheppard said.
"It was frightening at first. And when the general alarm sounded it became VERY real," she wrote.
Photos posted on social media showed the ship listing from side to side, and furniture smashing violently into walls.
"We saw two people taken off by stretcher," another passenger, Dereck Brown, told Norwegian newspaper Romsdal Budstikke. "People were alarmed. Many were frightened but they were calm."
The Viking Sky carried 1,373 passengers and crew members when it had engine trouble in an unpredictable area of the Norwegian coast known for rough, frigid waters.
The crew issued a mayday call Saturday afternoon.
Police said the crew, fearing the ship would run aground, managed to anchor in Hustadvika Bay so the evacuations could take place.
Coast guard official Emil Heggelund estimated to newspaper VG that the ship was 100 meters (328 feet) from striking rocks under the water and 900 meters (2,953 feet) from shore when it stopped.
The ship was visiting the Norwegian towns and cities of Narvik, Alta, Tromso, Bodo and Stavanger before its scheduled arrival Tuesday in the British port of Tilbury on the River Thames. The passengers mostly were a mix of American, British, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian citizens.

Rescuers and police officers inspect the River Danube from a landing dock after a tourist boat crashed with another ship late Wednesday, May 29, 2019. The boat capsized and sunk in the Danube River Wednesday
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Seven people were confirmed dead and at least 20 were missing early Thursday after a sightseeing boat carrying at least 32 South Korean passengers and two crew members collided with another vessel and sank in the Danube River in downtown Budapest.
Rescue officials said seven bodies had been recovered. Pal Gyorfi, spokesman for the National Ambulance Service, said seven people were rescued and hospitalized in stable condition following the accident Wednesday night.
There was some confusion about the total number of people involved. National police spokesman Kristof Gal said 33 South Koreans were on the boat, while the boat's operator and others said it carried 32 passengers. The two crew members were identified as Hungarian.
Employees from the South Korean Embassy in Budapest were assisting Hungarian officials in identifying those rescued and the deceased.
Earlier, the news website Index.hu said one of the people rescued was found near the Petofi Bridge, which is about two miles south of Parliament.
Dozens of rescue personnel, including from the military and divers, were involved in the search.
The boat that sank was identified as the "Hableany" (Mermaid), which is described on the sightseeing company's website as "one of the smallest members of the fleet." It has two decks and a capacity for 60 people, or 45 for sightseeing cruises.
Mihaly Toth, a spokesman for the Panorama Deck boating company, said the "Hableany" was on a "routine city sightseeing trip" when the accident happened. He told state television that he had no information about any technical problems with the boat, which he said was serviced regularly.

Cruise passengers get a white-knuckle ride as massive breakers batter and threaten to capsize their sailing boat off Hawaii
Published: 06:13 EDT, 9 July 2019
Passengers of a boat had the shock of their lives as their boat battled through rough conditions, almost capsizing.
The footage, taken in Honolulu, Hawaii, shows the charter chip being carried by a big wave while making its way back to dock after a sunset cruise.
A witness who saw the scene unfold said: '[The captain] was coming into the channel to dock the boat, right when the biggest set of the day came.'
The strength of the wave knocks it off its course to land and almost capsizing it.
'Bro that boat's gonna go. Oh my god look at that,' the onlooker says before adding: 'They're in trouble bro.'
Luckily the captain and the passengers, who surround him at the wheel, are able to keep the boat upright together.
At that moment the camera pans to a nearby group of surfers making the most of the waves.
The other boat passengers can be seen holding on to the mast and boom, trying their best to stay on the vessel.
The captain and passengers at the wheel manage to keep the afloat as the wave crashes ahead of them.
Just as another wave is about to break, the boat is reoriented back toward the shore.
The wave does not appear as big as the one before it, but the captain uses its momentum to get the boat back to the dock quicker.
The onlooker, now relieved, can be heard says: 'Oh my god boat, they're gonna be ok. Yeah captain, good job, killed it.'

Three ferry boats capsize in Philippines, killing 31
Updated: Aug 05, 2019, 11:04 IST | Agencies
Coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said the dead were mostly passengers of two ferries that flipped over in sudden wind gusts and powerful waves Saturday off Guimaras and Iloilo provinces
Manila: Rescuers recovered more bodies in rough seas where three ferry boats capsized after being buffeted by fierce winds and waves off two central Philippine provinces, bringing the death toll to 31 with three missing, the coast guard said Sunday.
Coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said the dead were mostly passengers of two ferries that flipped over in sudden wind gusts and powerful waves Saturday off Guimaras and Iloilo provinces. Sixty-two other passengers and crew were rescued. A third ferry, which was not carrying any passengers, also capsized in the Iloilo Strait but its five crewmen survived, Balilo said. Survivors recounted how the sky suddenly turned dark midway through their trip, followed by strong wind and rain that battered their ferries. Authorities wondered why a third ferry was allowed to sail about three hours after two other ferries overturned almost at the same time at noon in bad weather.
About 20 typhoons and storms batter the Philippines each year, making the archipelago that lies on the Pacific typhoon and earthquake belt one of the world's most disaster-prone countries.

2 men drown in Lake Michigan over weekend; 14 rescued after boat capsizes
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Dangerous conditions are expected to continue on Lake Michigan Monday, after the water's rough waves were responsible for at least two drownings this weekend.
A beach hazard alert remains in place through Monday due to rains and strong winds that will whip up waves up to 6 feet high.
Emergency crews raced to 63rd Street beach Sunday after reports of two men in Lake Michigan who were thrown from their jet skies. The incident occurred while a swim ban issued by the city's Park District was underway for 25 Chicago-area beaches.
Luckily, Natalia Lopez, 9, spotted the men struggling in the choppy water and called for help.
"I saw two men, two men struggling to get out of the water. The waves were high," Lopez said.
But earlier this weekend, a man in Waukegan was thrown from a jet ski and pulled out of Lake Michigan in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
No one else was hurt. The victim's name has not been released.
On Sunday morning, two men, ages 26 and 35, were pulled out of Lake Michigan by the Chicago Police Department's Marine Unit shortly after they jumped into the water in Lincoln Park on the North Side. The 26-year-old was rescued in critical condition and later died at a hospital.
The 35-year-old refused treatment.
"We've been on a record pace this whole summer," said water safety expert Dave Benjamin, who tracks drownings in the Great Lakes. "When we're comparing Lake Michigan on this date in 2018, we had 27. Today, we have 35."
High water levels this summer have made an already dangerous Lake Michigan even more so. Last Thursday, 35-year-old Rene Padilla drowned while trying to save his daughter who was knocked into the water by a large wave after venturing out onto a breakwall at 31st Street Beach.
"I told him yes, take a vacation because the girls are going back to school and he wanted to spend one day with them," said Bob Spagnolo, Padilla's boss. "It's not right."
Chicago Fire Department officials said unfortunately 40-60% of all drowning victims are "would be" rescuers. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in the United States.
A boat also capsized in Lake Michigan Sunday, the Waukegan Fire Department said.
Fire officials and Coast Guard crews rescued 14 people, including children, who are all in good condition.

Tug Boat Sinks In Atlantic, 2 Ukrainians Rescued, 11 Crewmen Still Missing
September 28, 2019 23:12 GMT
Two Ukrainian crewmen have been rescued aboard a lifeboat after a tug boat they were on disappeared on September 26 in a storm 1,200 nautical miles off the island of Martinique in the Atlantic Ocean.
The vessel’s operator, the French-based shipping company Bourbon, said in a news release on September 28 that three of the vessel’s 14 crew members had been rescued.
Two of them were Ukrainians, tweeted Vasyl Kyrylych, director of the consular services department at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
There was no word on the 11 still missing while Ukrainian media have reported that most of the crew members are Ukrainians.
Bourbon also confirmed that the tug boat had sunk. It was reported to have been taking on water in the rear end of the vessel.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway involving the French Navy, France’s network of Regional Operational Centers of Surveillance and Rescue (CROSS), the U.S. National Hurricane Center, and nearby commercial vessels who changed their routes to assist.
An emergency beacon indicated that the tug boat hit the outer edge of Hurricane Lorenzo 60 nautical miles from the storm’s eye when communication was lost, the vessel’s operator said.
A Falcon 50 aircraft flown by the French Navy spotted the three crewmen during a flyover.
They were subsequently taken to a commercial vessel where they received medical assistance and are currently under observation.
Bourbon, a service provider for the offshore oil and gas industry, is coordinating search efforts out of the French port city of Marseilles.

35 rescued, search operations underway as boat capsizes in Bengal river
According to police, the mishap took place at Mahishadal in the morning.
30th September 2019 04:50 PM
KOLKATA: A mechanised boat ferrying 35 to 36 odd passengers capsized in Rupnarayan river in East Midnapore district on Monday. Thirty-five passengers were rescued and searches are on to find out whether any other passenger was swept away.
According to the police, the mishap took place at Mahishadal in the morning. "The country-boat left the jetty and hit a sand-head in the tidal river. Suddenly a high tide impounded downstream flowing freshwater, reversing the flow and increasing the water level of the river. The boat was hit and it capsized,’’ said a police officer.
The police said the boat was ferrying passengers beyond its capacity. "No safety measure was available in the boat as well. Our teams are carrying out search operations to find out the passengers, including women, who fell into the river," said another police officer.
As the news of the boat capsize spread, policemen from adjoining Howrah district’s Shyampur police station, on the other side of the road, engaged their teams to take part in the search operations. "It seems the missing passengers were swept away by the high tide," said an officer of Shyampur police station.
"We are taking help from coast guard personnel. A hovercraft has been engaged to carry out search operation. Those who were rescued were said to be in stable condition by the authorities of the local healthcare units where they were taken," said V Soloman Nesakumar, superintendent of police, East Midnapore district.

63 rescued after boat capsizes in waters off Cebu – PCG
7 November 2019
CEBU – The Philippine Coast Guard Central Visayas (PCG-7) rescued more than 60 passengers and crew of a ferry boat that capsized off the coast of Sibonga, Cebu on Thursday.
The PCG said MV Siargao Princess was plying a route five miles south of Sibonga when it radioed for help around 11 a.m.
The agency said it immediately sent BRP Suluan to conduct a search and rescue operations in the area and found groups of people floating with life jackets at 1.6 nautical miles of Carcar point, Cebu.
The PCG said a total of 59 people were plucked from the water, while three crew members and one passenger swam to the shore after the boat encountered big waves that allegedly caused the ship “to dip to the front and eventually capsize.”
Initial investigation conducted on the vessel’s master, Captain Antonio Conag, revealed that the boat’s front hatch cover got detached when it was buffeted by fierce winds and sea swells.
Conag said big waves caused the vessel to pitch and take in water until it sunk.
The PCG said rescued passengers were brought to the Cebu port.
No fatalities have been reported in the incident.
Investigation on the sea mishap is underway.

Two migrant boats capsize en route to Europe, killing at least 23
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – In two separate incidents, 23 migrants trying to reach Europe have died after the boats they travelled in capsized in Greek and Turkish waters.

A boat carrying more than 50 migrants, including people from the Kurdistan Region, sank in the Ionian Sea south-west of the Greek island of Paxos on Saturday, killing 12.
"A boat carrying migrants [on Saturday] drowned off Greece’s Paxos island," Ari Jalal, head of The Summit Foundation for Refugee and Displaced Affairs (Lutka) told Rudaw on Sunday. "The boat was carrying more than 50 people, including many from the Kurdistan Region."
The foundation learned Kurds were in the capsized boat when relatives concerned about the fate of family members heading to Italy from Greece contacted them, Jalal added.
"We began to follow up on the incidents with the Greek coastal teams," he said. "It is not immediately known whether or not the Kurdish migrants have died."
Follow-ups by the foundation found that 15 Kurds were among those on board. Pishti News, an Athens-based Kurdish media outlet based in Europe with a focus on immigrant and refugee issues, reported "eight or nine" Kurds were among those rescued.
"Unfortunately, the fate of some of them is still unknown," Jalal added.
"After the boat sank, Greek coastal police immediately begun their search operations, managing to rescue 21 migrants and taking out the 12 bodies [of the deceased],” he added.
"A remaining 17 migrants are still missing," he added.
The cause of the capsize was also unclear, according to The New York Times citing Coast Guard spokesman Nikolaos Lagadianos.
Sunday's incident is a repeat of the all too frequent sinking of ill-equipped migrant boats between Turkey and Greece in recent years, drowning hundreds of mostly Syrians fleeing war in their home country.
In a separate incident that same night, 11 migrants including eight children were killed when their boat drowned off the coast of western Turkey, Anadolu Agency quoted the Turkish Coast Guard as saying.
Citing municipal officials in the Aegean coastal city of Izmir, Rudaw reporter Rawin Sterk said all the migrants were from Syria and that six people, including the owner of the boat, were arrested by Turkey’s coastguard.
According to Lutka, 371 migrants have managed to reach the Greek island of Lesbos since the beginning of 2020, on seven boats that travelled through Turkish waterways.

Earlier we spoke with Craig Lambinon, a spokesperson for the NSRI: Amidst the chaos of the rescue protocol, he was able to clarify a few things with us:
The team suspect that there are “nine people missing” – but they cannot be 100% sure of this number.
No fatalities have been confirmed at this stage, but there’s a possibility this will change later in the day.
The expedition was a fishing trip, and rumours of “abalone poaching” have not been verified.
NSRI and their co-operative groups are working establish what exactly caused the boat to capsize.
The search area ranges 4km from the shore from Robben Island to Oudekraal.

Two people die as boat capsizes in Moreton Bay off Brisbane
Published: 19/08/2020
Two people have died after a boat capsized in Moreton Bay, off Brisbane, despite a dramatic rescue attempt involving a boat carrying children.
Emergency services including a rescue helicopter were sent to the scene just after 1pm on Wednesday, with police divers entering the water.
Earlier, the Queensland Ambulance Service said one person was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.
Police have since confirmed that two people have died.
Authorities are unable to confirm how many people were onboard when the boat capsized near Green Island between Manly and North Stradbroke Island.
A boat, with children aboard as part of a school excursion, was first to respond to the overturned vessel as it passed by.
“It’s believed that a boat passing by had observed the boat overturned,” Acting Inspector David Candale said.
“They immediately stopped and rendered assistance to one of the males, and pulled that person from the water.
“Call for assistance was put out via radio.
“As you can imagine, certainly witnessing an event like this is distressing for any person, and I would imagine that would be a similar situation for those persons on the boat.”
It is believed the deceased persons were on the water fishing.

Cargo ship carrying 43 crew and thousands of cows is missing off Japan after typhoon
Sept 3 2020
TOKYO —A cargo ship carrying 43 crew members and about 5,800 cows has gone missing after running into stormy seas off Japan caused by a typhoon, with one of the crew later rescued, Japan's coast guard and defense ministry said on Thursday.
The 11,947-ton Gulf Livestock 1 sent a distress call around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, 115 miles west of the Japanese island of Amami-Oshima in the East China Sea, as Typhoon Maysak caused powerful winds, torrential rain and turbulent seas in the area.
A naval P-3C surveillance aircraft spotted a Filipino crew member wearing a life vest and waving while bobbing up and down in the water on Wednesday night, the Defense Ministry said. The crew member was picked up by a coast guard patrol boat. He is now able to walk and his condition is not life-threatening, the coast guard said.
But the rest of the crew, 38 Filipinos, two Australians and two New Zealanders, remain missing, with bad weather hampering rescue efforts.
Typhoon Maysak barreled through South Korea’s southern and eastern coasts on Thursday, flooding streams, cutting power to thousands of homes and leaving at least one person dead.
Maysak is just the sixth Category 2 or greater storm to hit South Korea since reliable records began in 1951, but it is the fourth typhoon to hit the Korean Peninsula during this year’s western Pacific typhoon season. It struck just a week after Typhoon Bavi affected the country on its way to a rare landfall in North Korea.
North Korea’s state television news aired real-time footage on Thursday of flooding in port city of Wonsan in the country’s east. State media has not reported any fatalities.
In South Korea’s port city of Busan, a woman died after getting hit by shattered glass, the country’s semiofficial Yonhap news agency reported Thursday.
Nuclear power reactors in path of the storm were automatically turned off early Thursday. Seoul’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety said the shutdown of four nuclear reactors near Busan was due to electricity supply issues and no radiation leak was detected.
Forecasters expect another powerful storm, Typhoon Haishen, to threaten southwestern Japan and the Korean Peninsula in coming days.

Boat accident off San Diego coast leaves 4 dead, nearly 2 dozen hospitalized
At least four people died after a crowded "smuggling vessel" hit a reef and capsized off the coast of San Diego on Sunday morning, officials said.
The incident took place around 9:56 a.m. local time, when a call came in from a commercial vessel that reported there was another boat in trouble near Point Loma leading into San Diego Bay, according to Rick Romero of the San Diego Lifeguard Services.
Three people were killed and more than two dozen others were hospitalized after a wooden boat capsized Sunday.
The initial report said there was just one person aboard the distressed ship. However, rescuers said there were as many as 30 people involved. James Gartland, the lifeguard chief for the city of San Diego, said the vessel hit a reef and broke.
"There are people in the water drowning, getting sucked by currents, people on shore," Romero told reporters at a news conference.
Seven people were in the water, and two had drowned, according to Romero. The remainder of the passengers were taken to area hospitals with conditions ranging from "hypothermia and injuries from the vessel breaking," Romero said.
At least three people needed CPR, according to Gartland.
Weather conditions, which caused the boat to break apart, also hindered the rescue efforts, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. There were seven-foot swells, low clouds and some rain.
Divers could not go in the water because the weather was so bad, the source told ABC News.
"I would have thought there were four people on that boat, you know there weren't a lot of people, four to six people on that boat," said witness Michael Jacobson. "And then all of a sudden, bodies just started coming up and jumping off, and it started tipping, tipping quite a bit."
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is investigating the crash since it took place in federal waters.
Jeff Stephenson, a Border Patrol agent, told reporters that the boat was a smuggling vessel, and the likely operator was in custody.
"(Smugglers) don't care about the people they're exploiting, all they care about is profit. To them, these people are just commodities," Stephenson told reporters.
WATCH: Officials give update after boat capsizes off San Diego
Three people were killed and more than two dozen others were hospitalized after a wooden boat capsized Sunday during a possible human smuggling operation just off the San Diego coast, authorities said.
Sharp Memorial Hospital and Sharp Grossmont Hospital reported receiving eight patients from the incident, with injuries mostly coming from passengers hitting rocks in the ocean, a spokesperson said in a statement. Three of the patients from Sharp Grossmont Hospital are expected to be discharged, while the remaining patients were in stable condition, the hospital said.
A spokesperson for UC San Diego Medical Center, Hillcrest said it also received eight patients, three of whom were trauma patients while the others were sent to the emergency department.
On Sunday night, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement that 29 have reportedly been accounted for: 24 of them who are alive, four who are dead "and one person who was last reported to be in critical condition."
ABC News' Chris Barry, Michelle Mendez and Sarah Hermina contributed to this report.

CONTAINER SHIP AGROUND OUTSIDE PATAPSCO RIVER
A nearly 1,100-foot-long container ship ran aground Sunday night on its way out of the Port of Baltimore, and as of Monday the ship was still stuck with no indication of when it could be moved.
Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Stephen Lehmann tells Bay Bulletin the container ship Ever Forward, which sails under the Hong Kong flag, ran aground before 11 p.m. Sunday. No one was injured. The Evergreen Marine Corp. (also based in Hong Kong) ship was headed for Norfolk when it got stuck near the Craighill Channel. Ever Forward was built in 2020, is 1,050 feet long, and reportedly draws about 42.6 feet of water.
While there was no initial impact on marine traffic, Lehmann said on Monday that water access will be restricted when salvage operations begin. He had no indication when that would be.
Lehmann says the Coast Guard is assisting the captain with the salvage, looking into whether there is any pollution or environmental impact, and is also investigating the cause of the incident. Bay Bulletin will update this story as it develops.
Evergreen made international headlines with another of its ships—the supersized container ship Ever Given, which blocked the Suez Canal a year ago, bringing worldwide shipping trade to a grinding halt.

Almost 80 people killed as boat capsizes in flood-swollen river
Lagos — Almost everyone on board a boat died when it capsized in a flood-swollen river in Nigeria's Anambra state, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Sunday. An estimated 85 people were taking the overloaded boat on Friday when flooding of the Niger River caused it to tip over.
"The boat reportedly carrying 85 persons capsized following rising floods in Ogbaru area of the state, with emergency services confirming a death toll of 76," Buhari's office quoted him as saying.
He directed the emergency services to provide relief to the victims.
"I pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for everyone's safety, as well as the well-being of the family members of the victims of this tragic accident," he added.
Earlier on Sunday, the emergency services said rising water level was hampering rescue efforts.
"The water level is very high and too risky for a smooth search and rescue operation," Thickman Tanimu, the southeast coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) told AFP.
He said the flooding was the worst the country has seen in years, with the water level around one-tenth higher than a decade ago.
Anambra state governor Charles Soludo urged residents of flood-ravaged areas to relocate, while adding that the government would provide relief to those affected by the disaster.
"This development is still a shock to the government and good people of Anambra State. I sympathize with the families of people involved," Soludo said in a statement.
Boat accidents occur regularly in Nigeria because of overloading, speeding, poor maintenance and disregarding navigation rules.
Since the start of the rainy season, many regions of the West African nation of more than 200 million people have been devastated by floods.
More than 300 people have been killed and at least 100,000 made homeless, according to the emergency services.
The continuous rain has washed away farmland and crops, sparking fears of food shortages, famine and hunger in a country already struggling with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
