California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico
One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.
The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came," Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.
Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.
All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.
She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.
"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.
Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

Hopewell mother, daughter die during York River fishing trip
JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. -- A mother and daughter from Hopewell died fishing in the York River Tuesday afternoon. State officials identified the mother as 35-year-old Kimberly Marie Privette, of Hopewell. Her nine-year-old daughter's name was not released due to her age.
The mother and daughter were with other family members on a 20-foot fishing boat in the York River halfway between Croaker Landing and West Point when it began to take on water over the bow, investigators said.
"The boat started to bog down and they plugged in a secondary bilge pump. It was unable pump out the incoming water. They were able to get the motor started and tried to get the boat on plane to push out the water," a Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries investigators said. "When they got on plane the water from the bow came rushing back and causing the boat to capsize ejecting three of the occupants. Two of which became trapped under the boat."
The child's father, grandfather, cousin, and a family friend were all in the boat when it capsized.
"It is believed the subjects were in the water from 12:30 until 2:38 p.m. until a passerby boat was able to rescue them and call for help," the investigator said. "The six people were pulled from the water, two of whom were unconscious and required CPR."
All six people were taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Hospital where Privette and her daughter were pronounced dead.
Investigators said both Privette and her daughter were wearing life jackets.
"The initial investigation indicates the two were trapped under the boat when it capsized," the investigator said. "The four other individuals who were also taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Hospital were released and did not accept medical assistance."

13 people rescued after boat capsizes on Kamloops Lake
The Canadian Press Posted: Jul 15, 2016 7:01 AM PT
Thirteen out-of-province vacationers had to be rescued in B.C.'s southern Interior Thursday evening when their pleasure boat was swamped during a thunderstorm.
Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Michel Grondin says the five adults and eight youths, aged 12 to 15, were in a six-metre boat on Kamloops Lake, west of Kamloops, when the sudden storm kicked up strong winds and high waves.
Grondin says several RCMP units, the fire department and the RCMP helicopter rushed to the lake.
He says by the time crews arrived, nine of the 13 had already made it to shore. Rescuers were able to quickly pluck the remaining two adults and two children from the water and reunite the group.
Police could not provide the home towns of the vacationers, but say all 13 are unhurt.

Coast Guard: Problem in engine room led to flooding on boat
A problem in the engine room led to flooding on board a fishing boat off Alaska's Aleutian Islands, forcing the crew to abandon ship, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.
The 46 crew members of the stricken Alaska Juris were taken to the port in Adak, Alaska, arriving late Wednesday morning, Adak city manager Layton Lockett said. The crew members did not require medical attention, he said.
Adak is about 175 miles (282 kilometers) southeast of where the Alaska Juris ran into trouble.
The Coast Guard said the crew will be flown to Anchorage. A message from The Associated Press seeking interviews with the crew Wednesday at an Adak inn where they were taken was not immediately returned.
The agency had planned to conduct a flyover Wednesday to see if the 220-foot (67-meter) Alaska Juris was still afloat and determine if any pollution has spilled from the disabled vessel. The Coast Guard later said no flyover will occur Wednesday because of the unavailability of aircraft.
The Coast Guard is asking mariners in the area to share updates on the vessel, civilian spokesman Cory Cichoracki said.
Coast Guard Lt. Joseph Schlosser said it's not unusual for vessels to run into trouble at sea, given the "gigantic" size of Alaska, which has more coastline than the Atlantic and Pacific seaboards combined.
"I wouldn't say it's uncommon for a fishing vessel like this to become distressed," he said. "But the uncommon thing is that this luckily went very well for this crew."
The ship was listing at 5 percent when the crew members were disembarking Tuesday, Schlosser said, noting that was the last observation of the vessel. The incident is under investigation.
Conditions at the time were calm seas and limited visibility because of fog.
Coast Guard officials praised the response by the good Samaritan vessels. The Spar Canis and the Vienna Express heard the Coast Guard's emergency broadcast for help and rushed to the scene. Also responding were two other merchant vessels, the Seafisher and Ocean Peace, which transported the crew to Adak. The Coast Guard initially said the other two vessels were taking the crew.
"The good Samaritans' willingness to respond ... was paramount to getting the Alaska Juris crew to safety," said Lt. Greg Isbell, Coast Guard District 17 command duty officer.
Video footage showed one of the bright orange life rafts floating some distance from the stricken vessel, while another appeared tethered to it. The Coast Guard footage shot from an aircraft also showed a merchant ship in the distance.
On Tuesday, the agency diverted a cutter and dispatched two C-130 transport planes and two helicopters to the sinking ship near Kiska Island, which is about 690 miles (1,110 kilometers) west of Dutch Harbor, one of the nation's busiest fishing ports.
The Alaska Juris is owned by Renton, Washington-based Fishing Co. of Alaska, according to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. The company did not immediately respond to Associated Press for further information.
On Wednesday, recovery plans were underway by a salvage company, Resolve Marine Group. Project manager David Maruszak said the company is sending a 200-foot (61-meter) tug, the Resolve Pioneer, to the scene from Dutch Harbor. The tug is expected to arrive late Thursday or early Friday, he said.
It's not the first trouble the Alaska Juris has encountered in recent years.
In March 2012, a fisherman aboard the boat died after a cable snapped and struck him in the head. Days later, another fisherman was treated for a head injury after a cable snapped again and hit him.
In May 2012, the Alaska Juris requested help from the Coast Guard after three crew members were exposed to ammonia from a leak. The agency flew the trio to Cold Bay, Alaska.
Another vessel owned by the Fishing Co. of Alaska, the 189-foot Alaska Ranger, sank in March 2008 about 130 miles (209 kilometers) West of Dutch Harbor. Five of the boat's 47 crew members, including the captain, died. A Coast Guard investigation concluded in 2011 that the vessels owner failed to properly maintain its structural condition.

Five Indian fishermen dead, 20 missing in fishing boat capsize
Five Indian fishermen died and 20 were reported missing after their boats, which had drifted away into Bangladeshi waters during a cyclonic storm, capsized in the rough seas, officials said on Sunday.
According to the Indian Coast Guard, which is conducting search and rescue operations jointly with the Bangladesh Coast Guard, the fishing boat ‘Mahagauri’ with its 17 crew members had drifted across the international maritime boundary line (IMBL) and capsized.
South 24 Parganas district magistrate PB Salim told PTI that on the intervening night of August 7 and 8, about 200 trawlers from the district had ventured to the high seas and eight of them went missing in the cyclonic storm.
Six of them were later found to be safe.
One fisherman, Anup Das, was rescued by a Bangladeshi fishing boat and handed over to an Indian fishing boat near the IMBL.
Five bodies were found from near the capsized boat, which was found south of Heron Point in Bangladeshi waters, officials said.
The boat was towed to the nearest landing point, where it will be checked for any more bodies trapped inside.
Another fishing boat named Prosenjit is also feared to have capsized in the rough seas and is still missing. One of its crew members, Nirmal Jana, was rescued while 10 others are still untraceable.
Inspector general KR Nautiyal, Coast Guard Commander (north east) said, “Each life at sea is precious to us and our assets will comb the area for survivors”.
“A joint search and rescue mission is being undertaken by Indian Coast Guard and Bangladeshi Coast Guard within Bangladeshi waters. BNS Amin and BNS Sangu are the two Bangladeshi ships that have joined the operation. Indian coast guard ship Sarojini Naidu is in the area and is being joined by Coast Guard Ship Rajkiran shortly,” an Indian
Coast Guard official said.
Joint aerial surveillance by Indian Coast Guard Dornier aircrafts and maritime patrol aircrafts of Bangladesh is in progress

Ten die in tourist boat capsize off Indonesia's Riau Islands
At least 10 people have died and five are missing after a boat sank while taking tourists from Tanjung Pinang to Penyengat Island in Indonesia's Riau Islands province.
The boat was transporting 17 passengers, including a boat operator and two children, when high waves and strong winds caused the boat to capsize in the waters off Penyengat Island, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.
"Joint search and rescue team have found 12 passengers, 10 of whom
died and two were injured. The team is still searching for the remaining five passengers who are missing," Nugroho said.
He added after the boat capsized, some passengers swam to their rescue or were fished out of the water by nearby boats, while some of them who couldn't swim were swept away by the waves and died.
The National Search and Rescue Agency has deployed 200 personnel, 20 search and rescue boats and 50 wooden passenger boats to scour the waters for the missing passengers, as well as marines who are diving to find drowned passengers.
"The main obstacle now is the strong current," Nugroho said.

Coast Guard rescues 26 people from sinking boat
SAN DIEGO - More than two dozen people on board a 63-foot sport-fishing boat were rescued in Mexican waters Saturday morning near the Coronado Islands southwest of San Diego, according to authorities.
The U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center heard the call for help at about 5 a.m. that the American-flagged vessel Invicta had crashed into rocks.
The Invicta was reported to be taking on water while it was anchored and the crew were deploying their life rafts, according to Coast Guard officials. Five crewmembers and 21 passengers were on board.
Coast Guard officials immediately began transmitting an urgent marine information broadcast and obtained permission from the Mexican government to enter Mexico's airspace and territorial waters for the rescue.
A Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was immediately launched and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Otter was diverted to assist the passengers and crew.
The crew of the 35-foot commercial fishing vessel Sweet Marie overheard the calls for help and diverted to assist the Invicta, the Coast Guard said.
Sweet Marie's crew arrived on scene and safely transported all
26 passengers and crewmembers aboard their vessel and began to make way toward San Diego.
The Sea Otter crew arrived and transferred them aboard the cutter, then safely transported them to the San Diego Harbor Police dock, on Shelter Island.
All passengers and crewmembers were wearing lifejackets.
There was one report of a back injury, but the passenger declined treatment.
The Invicta reportedly broke apart. The U.S. Coast Guard was investigating the incident.

Bali ferry carrying 40 passengers including British tourists explodes killing at least one woman and injuring 14 foreigners
At least one woman is dead and up to 20 foreigners are injured after a ferry exploded while travelling from East Bali to the Gili Islands on Thursday.
The Gili Cat 2 fast boat was taking 40 passengers to popular tourist destination and holiday island Gili Trawangan when the fuel tank blew up on board.
Although one passenger, a German woman, has been confirmed dead, a police spokesperson said two of those on board had died.
Graphic photographs circulating on social media show passengers being carried to the shore by locals, bleeding heavily and with limbs hanging off from the explosion.
Dazed passengers, many covered in cuts and bruises, were taken to medical centres on the Indonesian holiday island after the blast, with television footage showing them being carried on stretchers to ambulances and lying in hospital beds.
The 20 injured passengers aboard the speedboat were from Portugal, Germany, Austria and Britain. Early reports that Australians were on board the boat have not been verified.
The boat exploded 600ft from the shore of Padang Bai Harbour at 9.30am, and passengers reportedly 'suffered an electrical surge and burned in the waters.'
'The explosion happened five minutes after the boat departed,' local police chief Sugeng Sudarso told AFP.
'One female passenger died from head injuries.'
According to local reports, the boat exploded near a headland at Padang Bai Harbour at 9.30am. Australian, German, British, Dutch and Korean citizens were said to be on board

Death toll in migrant ship wreck rises to 202
September 28, 2016
BURG RASHID, Egypt (Reuters) — Thirty-three bodies were recovered on Tuesday (September 27) as a wreck of a boat that sank off Egypt last week with hundreds of migrants aboard was lifted from the depths, raising the confirmed death toll to 202, a local official said.
The boat capsized off the Mediterranean coast on Sept. 21. Rescue workers and fishermen said they had rescued at least 169 people, but uncertainty remains over how many might still be missing.
“This is something only God knows. There indeed are still some people who have not found their children, who may have been sitting at the back of the boat and swept away by the current. Only God knows what happened to those who haven’t been found,” said local fisherman, Hamada Zamalout, who has been assisting in the rescue operations since the accident.
Regional governor Mohamed Sultan said the number of bodies recovered was “almost final” but rescue workers were still looking for human remains at sea.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday it believed at least 450 people were aboard the vessel and that about 300 perished in all.
Egyptian security sources initially said there had been almost 600 migrants aboard.
Officials said the boat was carrying Egyptian, Sudanese, Eritrean and Somali migrants, and that they believed it was heading for Italy. Four members of the crew were arrested.
More and more migrants have been trying to cross to Italy from the African coast over the summer months, particularly from Libya, where people-traffickers operate with relative impunity. But boats have increasingly departed from Egypt of late as Libya has slipped deeper into lawlessness.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Monday (September 26) that there is “no justification” for these deaths and called for “more secure” borders.
Fisherman Ahmed Fawzy says Egyptian officials need to pay more attention to those in need.
“(I ask) those in power, and the president himself, to pay more attention to the poor who are neglected, and who, because of the high costs of living, the lack of money and income, are willing to throw their lives away, and throw themselves in the sea. So all we want is for them to pay more attention to us and to take better care of the poor.”
The IOM says that more than 3,200 migrants have died while trying to cross the Mediterranean this year, while more than 300,000 have reached European shores. More than 1 million Middle Eastern, African and Asian migrants entered Europe in 2015.
The IOM said the number of migrants to arrive in Europe this year likely would not reach last year’s level, though the number of fatalities was virtually certain to exceed the 2015 total.

What a photographer saw when a rescue vessel went into action off the Libyan coast.
By RICK GLADSTONEOCT. 5, 2016
It began with blips on a radar screen, 12 miles off the Libyan coast. As the rescuers approached, they found overloaded wooden vessels and rafts that evoked scenes of the slave trade.
Hundreds of African migrants were crammed into boats headed for Italy. More than two dozen people were dead in one boat alone, asphyxiated from the crush aboard. In other boats, bodies were splayed on the floorboards, forcing survivors to clamber over the corpses of their fellow voyagers.
Aris Messinis, an Agence France-Presse photographer aboard the rescue boat Astral, said it was like nothing he had ever seen.
The passengers — from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Nigeria and other sub-Saharan countries — were found by the Astral on Tuesday, part of a wave of more than 11,000 rescued in the Mediterranean by aid groups and the Italian Coast Guard this week.
Migrants aboard a large wooden boat, which may have held 1,000 people — roughly five times its capacity — waited frantically for help. Some jumped into the water.
Even with life jackets tossed to them, migrants struggled to reach the Astral and other rescue vessels, which later transferred them to Italian Coast Guard ships bound for Italy.
Pandemonium punctuated the rescue operation, despite efforts by the Astral crew to calm the migrants. “These people were in panic,” Mr. Messinis said.
Migrants aboard the wooden vessel included infants, like the one below.
In one of the boats, holding roughly 150 people, Mr. Messinis said that rescuers found 29 bodies — 10 men and 19 women. “They told us these people were dead from the night,” he said.
At one point, passengers held a child aloft to signal rescuers of their desperation.
Despite a drop in sea crossings to Europe by migrants this year, more than 3,000 have died in perilous crossings from Libya, where political chaos has made it the main departure point for smuggling operators who care little about whether their clients survive.
Mr. Messinis, 39, who has covered the conflicts in Libya and Syria, has been photographing the European migration crisis since it began three years ago. He has often put aside his camera to help rescuers.
What he witnessed on the Mediterranean, he said, was different. The analogy to slave ships that once plied the Atlantic, he said, was “exactly right — except that it’s not hundreds of years ago.”
"I’ve seen a lot of death, but not this thing,” he said. “This is shocking and this is what makes you feel you are not living in a civilized world.”

Rescue after San Francisco boat capsize leaves people trapped under hull
Authorities say all 30 on board, mostly young people, safe after coast guard divers rushed to overturned sailboat near Pier 45
A boat with 30 people on board capsized off San Francisco’s Pier 45, the city’s fire department said on Saturday, with some people becoming trapped beneath the hull.
Coast guard divers quickly reached the scene and were able to rescue the people, a spokeswoman for the agency told the Guardian.
“All 30 people are safe and accounted for,” she said, citing an estimate of passengers, many of whom were young people. She could not provide any specifics about why the boat capsized or who was on board. “There are some adults, but that’s the only information that I have at this time.”
The authorities later described the vessel as a sailboat.
Two people sustained serious injuries, officials later told the local NBC affiliate.

Tuna boat capsizes, sinks at mouth of Merrimack Monday
The Coast Guard in Newburyport reports that two men were thrown into the water.
A tuna boat carrying two people capsized – and it’s believed sank – at the mouth of the Merrimack River Monday night.
At about 7 p.m. Monday, the Laurie Ann, a 35-foot tuna boat making its way into Newburyport, took in massive amounts of water from breaking waves and flipped over, throwing two men into water.
“They were doing their inbound transit, and a breaking wave hit,” Newburyport Coast Guard Officer Ruben Colon said. “A good Samaritan called it in and said an 8-foot breaking wave came from their stern [rear] and capsized the vessel.”
That good Samaritan, operating a fishing boat nearby, helped the two men out of the water while the Coast Guard rushed to the scene on a motor lifeboat.
The men were treated by EMTs for multiple injuries including “hypothermia and shock, and there was a gentlemen that had a laceration to the face,” Colon said. “The water was between 55 and 60 degrees.”
Afterward, the Coast Guard searched the water for the boat. They found a life
raft Tuesday afternoon, and the boat’s emergency position-indicating radiobeacon was found in Salisbury, but there has been no sign of the boat.
“The boat has not been recovered yet, and we believe it is still in the water in the vicinity of the river mouth,” Colon said. “We’re advising mariners to be cautious in that area.”
It’s not that uncommon for boats of the Laurie Ann’s size to capsize near the mouth of the Merrimack, with its often choppy waters.
“With the right conditions weatherize, the bar does break and it is a dangerous area, especially for boats coming inbound,” Colon cautioned.
While boating accident deaths in the northeast have decreased – according to a study released by the Coast Guard this year – 30 of the 34 people who died in recreational boating accidents in 2015 drowned, and 29 of the 34 deaths were the result of capsizing or falling overboard. Thirty-two of the 34 people who died were not wearing a life jacket.

Barge flips, sinks only weeks after tugboat runs aground near Bella Bella, B.C.
By The Canadian PressThe barge was carrying gravel and sand from Seattle, Wash., to Alaska when it flipped. All four crew members were safe.
BELLA BELLA, B.C.—The Heiltsuk Nation in British Columbia says a barge has flipped and sunk north of the site where a tug that ran aground last month still awaits removal.
A news release from the First Nation says the barge, which was carrying gravel and sand from Seattle, Wash., to Alaska flipped Sunday evening in a channel along B.C.’s central coast.
The 37-metre tugboat that was towing the barge was still afloat Sunday night, and the four crew members were safe.
A Canadian Coast Guard spokesperson says the tug has been granted permission from Transport Canada to continue its journey north to Alaska while crews remain at the scene of the sunken 65-metre barge.
The sinking comes less than four weeks after the tugboat Nathan E. Stewart ran aground near Bella Bella, spilling diesel fuel into the water.
Sunday’s incident happened near Klemtu, which is about 55 kilometres north of Bella Bella.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to make an announcement in Vancouver on Monday about how tanker and fuel spills along the West Coast will be responded to in the future.
Heiltsuk member Jess Housty, who is part of the diesel spill response team, says with two incidents involving sinking vessels, Trudeau’s promised regulatory changes can’t come soon enough.

Five dead, three unaccounted for after boat capsizes in Kaipara Harbour
Last updated 06:56, November 27 2016
Eight people on board a boat that capsized in Kaipara Harbour are dead or missing, police said on Saturday night.
A total of 11 people were on board the charter fishing boat The Francie when it overturned near Kaipara Harbour's North Head about 3.30pm.
Three people were pulled alive from the water, along with five bodies. Three people remain missing. The three survivors were taken to North Shore Hospital with moderate injuries.
The police Eagle helicopter and Coastguard were still combing the area for survivors.
Inspector Duncan Hall said on Saturday night the three survivors had been plucked from the water by the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Hall said a shoreline search around South Head and Te Oneone Rangatira Beach would continue into the early hours of Sunday morning.
The air search had been called off for the night, and would resume at 7am, he said.
Rescue crews at the Kaipara Harbour tragedy.
"Inquiries are being made into what happened to the vessel and how people ended up in the water," said Hall.
The manager of the Grand Hotel in Helensville, Bonnie Johnson, said that was "pretty raw at the moment" in the bar.
"We don't know what has actually gone on out there, or who exactly was involved," she said.
"But one thing's for sure - one of our boats isn't coming home.
It is understood the vessel got into trouble on a bar at the entrance to the harbour.
"And there are kids who aren't going have their fathers there for Christmas.
"Anyone who's got any emotion and anyone who comes from a fishing community will be feeling pretty distraught right now."
She said the incident had locals' memories "flooded" with images of the last boat that went down in that area, 22 years ago.
The owner of The Francie, Bill McNatty.
Two people died in that incident and the boat sunk in two minutes, she said.
"Shivers yeah I remember it... you never forget that feeling in your stomach," she said.
"We come from a fishing community - every time one goes down, it brings all the others back."
Two Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopters are helping in the rescue in Kaipara Harbour.
Members of the boating community in Kaipara, northwest of Auckland, said The Francie had been reported missing during the afternoon.
Few knew the perils of the Kaipara better than her crew: The Francie was involved in a dramatic maritime rescue in 2012. The Francie pulled a 12-metre ketch, Cheval de Mer, to safety, after it had been adrift for several days and came perilously close to hitting the bar.
Then three weeks ago, The Francie got in trouble when its engine failed at the harbour mouth. It had to be towed to safety, a local boatie said.
The owner of a fellow Kaipara boat charter, Sharon Kostanich, said the incident had come as "a terrible shock".
"It's a tragic thing to happen, terrible, and of course it really brings it home to us - you're out there in a boat responsible for so many people," she said.
Kostanich said that the capsized boat was owned by local man Bill McNatty.
"Bill's a friend, though, so of course we're very worried."
Oamaru-born McNatty, a passionate environmentalist, had been a spokesman for Kiwis Against Sand Mining. He also worked with Kaipara Forest and Bird, and earned a degree in psychology from the University of Waikato. His only daughter Kathleen-Jane Hotere, 23, is understood to be a niece of the late artist Ralph Hotere.
The Francie is licensed to carry up to 20 people, with two crew, and is available for hire at $700-$800 a day.
It promises people the chance to catch kahawai, snapper and gurnard and in season trevally, maumau, and kingfish.
"We at Francie Charters are one of only a handful of charter boat on the Kaipara Harbour, we cater for all fishing persons young and old," an online advert says.
The family of one man, Willie Uea, offered their condolences to those who had lost loved ones, but thanked God that he had chosen to skip the trip.
"Praise the Lord my husband didn't go on this fishing boat trip today," said Maarametua Uea on Facebook. "For some reason he changed his mind ... he felt something was gonna happen."
The Francie's previous owner Rod Bridge, who operates another boat charter in the Kaipara, said that it "was way too rough to get out over the bar" on Saturday.
He had called off his own boat trips for the day, due to bad conditions.
"The only reason I'd be out in that sort of weather would be for a rescue mission - to get some other (person) who'd got stuck out there."
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission said it opened an inquiry into the "marine accident".
It said it was tracking the continuing search and rescue operation, and was sending two investigators to the scene who were expected to arrive on Sunday morning.
"The commission's inquiry will seek to explain the circumstances and causes of the accident, with a view to helping prevent similar accidents in the future," the commission said.
It said it was unable to confirm further details of the incident while the search and rescue operation continued.
A Maritime NZ spokeswoman said the organisation was "looking into what action it will take".
"Our rescue co-ordination centre has been assisting with determining the drift of the sea currents to help with the rescue."
A fixed winged plane was also there helping.
'A WALL OF WHITE WATER'
Fisherman Eric Kuypers, from Manukau, was on the north end of Muriwai Beach at the same time the boat got into trouble, and said the sea was wild.
"It was so rough," he said.
"It was just a wall of white water at least 500m to 1000m out. That surf had got up from 1.4m to about 3m.
"We saw the plane going up and we saw about seven ambulances."
A number of charter fishing companies operate vessels on the harbour.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand media and communications manager Lisa Smith said lifeguards from Muriwai Volunteer Surf Lifeguard Services were assisting police with the rescue.

More Than 20 Still Missing off Yemen After Ship Sinks
At least 36 people have been rescued after a ship carrying more than 60 people capsized in the Arabian Sea as search efforts continue for the missing passengers, a Yemeni military official said.
Col. Abdullah Khamees said authorities were hoping to save more passengers, some of whom are believed to have escaped on lifeboats. In a statement, the internationally recognized Yemeni government said Tuesday that the vessel disappeared some 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the remote island of Socotra five days ago. It was sailing from the southern province of Hadramawt.
Khamees, who was reached by phone from a military base on the island, said the vessel was carrying excess weight.
The government has urged the Saudi-led military coalition — which is backing the government in its fight against Shiite rebels — for help.
Flights between Yemeni cities and the island have been suspended since March 2015, when the Saudi-led coalition began its campaign against the rebels and closed Yemeni air space.

Two missing after vessel sinks near Dutch Harbor
Two people are missing after a commercial fishing vessel sank near Unalaska Tuesday night, forcing crew members to abandon ship.
Around 10 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard received reports that the 117-foot Exito was taking on water north of Unalaska Bay.
Petty Officer Meredith Manning said Air Station Kodiak sent a rescue helicopter crew to respond, while four vessels nearby volunteered to help.
“One of the Good Samaritan vessels on-scene located three of the five crew members from the Exito and were able to take them onboard,” Manning said. “They’re transporting them to Dutch Harbor.”
Meanwhile, the helicopter crew and remaining volunteer ships are still searching the area for the two missing crew members. The vessel ultimately sank four nautical miles north of Priest Rock, according to officials with the Marine Safety Detachment Unit in Dutch Harbor.
Manning said it’s still unclear why the Exito began taking on water.

One dead, eight missing in boat capsize
TOKYO: One crew member of a crab fishing boat has died and eight others remain missing after the vessel capsized off Japan’s western coast, coast guard officials said.
The 76-tonne fishing boat Daifukumaru capsized in the Sea of Japan just off Shimane prefecture at about 5.20am, leaving all nine crew on board missing, a Japan Coast Guard spokesman earlier said.
Coast guard rescuers on a helicopter spotted a man floating with his face down five hours after the accident and took him to hospital where he was confirmed dead, another spokesman said.
Patrol boats and aircraft are continuing to search for eight other men still missing, he added.
The nine crew members include eight Japanese and one Indonesian.
The nationality of the man discovered has yet to be confirmed, according to coastguard officials.
“They were fishing for crabs when water flowed into the boat,” an official with the local fishermen’s union that operated the vessel said on public broadcaster NHK.
“So the boat was towed by another vessel. That was when it capsized.”

Seven rescued as cargo ship sinks off Ramsgate
Seven people have been rescued from life rafts in the sea after abandoning a sinking cargo ship near Kent.
An extensive rescue operation was carried out overnight by search teams after the boat went down about 35 nautical miles (40 miles) off Ramsgate.
Rescue helicopters, a lifeboat, and Dutch helicopter and several merchant vessels all came to the aid of the sinking 90m-long vessel.
Coastguards said the crew sent a Mayday alert before abandoning the ship.
Ian Guy, from the UK coastguard, said an emergency call came shortly before midnight.
'Crew ended up in sea'
"They were taking on water rapidly and planning to abandon the ship," he said.
"When they made the call, I understand the boat was already going under and by the time they finished the call, they didn't make it to the life rafts.
"The boat was under the water and they were themselves in the water."
He said the crew managed to get on the life rafts from where they were rescued, but added they had all been in the sea in January and were airlifted to hospital with potential hypothermia but no serious injuries.
Weather conditions were "challenging" with severe gale-force winds, he added.
Ships nearby managed to reach the stranded crew first, but a merchant ship near the scene was unable to deploy its fast rescue inflatable craft because of the conditions.
It is not yet clear whether it was the weather or another problem which caused the ship to sink, or whether any cargo was on board.

Refugee crisis: More than 100 asylum seekers drown as boat sinks in the Mediterranean Sea
Disaster comes day after more than 550 migrants rescued between Libya and Italy
The disaster came a day after two migrants were found crushed to death in a dinghy AP
More than 100 refugees have drowned after a boat sank in rough conditions in the Mediterranean Sea as the crisis shows no sign of slowing.
The Italian Navy was searching for survivors from the vessel, which was believed to be carrying up to 110 people.
Only four survivors were pulled from the water, with at least eight bodies found so far.
More than 500 refugees rescued in single day as crisis continues
Flavio Di Giacomo, from the International Organisation for Migration, told The Independent around 106 people were thought to have died and described the conditions at sea as "extremely bad".
The boat went down in waters between Libya and Italy, which has become the deadliest sea crossing in the world since the start of the refugee crisis.
It claimed the vast majority of more than 5,000 lives lost in treacherous boat journeys to Europe in 2016, the deadliest year on record, with people drowning or being crushed or suffocated in overcrowded smugglers' boats.
Saturday's disaster was the worst single incident so far this year, which has already seen at least 122 deaths at sea.

Boat carrying 28 Chinese tourists sinks off Malaysia: Xinhua | Reuters
January 29, 2017
KUALA LUMPUR Malaysia navy ships scrambled on Sunday to rescue 31 people including 28 Chinese tourists aboard a boat which sank off the coast of Borneo, maritime officials and Chinese state media reported.
Passengers were in the water awaiting help, China’s consulate general’s office in Kota Kinabalu said, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency. Malaysian officials were unable to immediately confirm the report.
The boat left Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Malaysia’s eastern Sabah state, at about 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Saturday bound for the popular tourist spot of Mengalum island, Malaysian officials said.
It was reported missing at about 9.50 p.m. after failing to arrive at the island and a search operation was launched soon after, Sabah and Labuan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) deputy director Rahim Ramli said.
Bad weather was hampering the search effort, which covers an area of about 400 nautical square miles.
“We are looking at strong winds and choppy waters,” he said.
The Malaysian navy, maritime police and air force were involved in the search, the MMEA said in a statement.
The Chinese consulate in Kota Kinabalu earlier on Sunday asked the state government to step up the search effort, Xinhua reported.
The China National Tourism Administration said it has initiated emergency response procedures.

MADRID, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Twelve fishermen were saved by Spanish Maritime Rescue Services on Friday after their boat went down in high seas due to gale force winds off the north coast of Spain.
Maritime Rescue Services confirmed that the "Gure Uxua" sank 80 km off the coast of Asturias, but that all of the crew was rescued in an operation involving three helicopters and three rescue boats.
Two distress calls were received after which five of the crew members were rescued by the Pesca II helicopter and taken to hospital in the town of Celeiro, while the other seven were flown to hospital in Gijon.
Authorities confirmed that some of those rescued were suffering from "severe hypothermia", but were alive.
This is the most important incident to date that has happened as a result of the storm force winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour which are affecting the northwest and north coast of Spain.
The community of Galicia in the far northwest is currently on red alert as a result of the high winds and expected rainfall, while the rest of the north coast is on orange alert.

Six Missing After Crab Fishing Vessel Sinks in Bering Sea
February 13, 2017
The U.S. Coast Guard is continuing to search for the six missing crewmembers of the Seattle-based crab fishing vessel Destination, which is believed to have sunk in the Bering Sea off St. George, Alaska over the weekend.
The Coast Guard said Saturday that it had launched a search after picking up an electronic position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) alert from the fishing vessel approximately two miles northwest of St. George in the Bering Sea.
The EPIRB was recovered among a debris field containing buoys, a life ring from fishing vessel Destination and an oil sheen, the Coast Guard said.
Weather on scene on Saturday was reported to be 30-mph winds with five to eight-foot seas and snowing. Air temp was reported to be 21 degrees with a sea temperature of 3o degrees.
The Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau arrived on scene Sunday at 10 a.m. to assist with an Air Station Kodiak MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew currently deployed on the cutter. Citizens of St. George have also been patrolling the shoreline for any signs of the crew or vessel.
Coast Guard crews assisting in the search included two HC-130 Hercules airplane crews, two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, as well as the Morgenthau.
An active search was still underway of Monday.
“Prayers are needed for our brothers on the F/V Destination and their families,” said Capt. Casey McManus, captain of the “Deadliest Catch” fishing vessel F/V Cornelia Marie. “Their EPIRB went off this morning triggering a search by the US Coast Guard. So far, a life ring, the EPIRB and some debris is all that had been recovered. An oil slick has been report on the surface, and a Hercules -130 aircraft and two Jayhawk choppers are conducting a search pattern along with the Silver Spray and the Bering Rose. The wind has come down, but it’s only 20 degrees and the seawater is 30. Please pray. The picture below does not do the boat justice. It was a very sturdy platform that was maintained at the highest levels. So hard to believe it could happen to a boat like this, with an amazing crew.”

More Than 200 Migrants Feared Dead as Two Boats Capsize in Mediterranean
by Associated Press
MADRID — A Spanish aid organization says it has recovered five bodies from waters off the Libyan coast and fears that at least 240 migrants could have died after two boats capsized in the Mediterranean.
Proactiva Open Arms spokeswoman Laura Lanuza said each rubber boat usually holds 120 people, but smugglers tend to fill them over capacity to maximize their benefits in each trip.
She said the NGO confirmed the sinking of two boats but was only able to find the bodies of five men of African origin on Thursday morning, about 13 miles north of the Libyan town of Sabratha.
The migrants were between 16 and 25 years old and appeared to have drowned, said Lanuza, as their bodies didn't show any sign of violence. The NGO's rescuers were searching for a third boat.

South Korea cargo ship disappears off Uruguay coast, leaving many missing
A South Korean ship is believed to have sunk off the coast of Uruguay after making an SOS call. An ongoing search by the Uruguayan navy and nearby merchant ships has found two survivors.
Some 22 people were missing on Saturday after a South Korean cargo ship disappeared and apparently sank in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The 24-man crew on the Stellar Daisy carrier, which is owned and operated by South Korean-based Polaris Shipping, sent out an SOS on Friday just before noon local time (1400 UTC) and sent a text message to Polaris saying they were taking on water on the port side.
The ship last made contact about 2,000 nautical miles (3,700 kilometers) off the coast of the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo.
Two survivors
An ongoing rescue search by Uruguayan navy and nearby merchant ships has so far found two survivors. Several empty lifeboats and rafts were also found in the area.
A statement from the navy said the first ships to reach the scene detected a "strong smell of fuel" and debris in the water, indicating that "the damaged ship had sunk."
The ship had departed from a port in Brazil. Its intended destination was not immediately clear.

Authorities are trying to prevent an oil spill from a barge that sank in San Francisco Bay during a storm that also knocked out power to thousands and threatened homes in Oakland.
The 112-foot freight barge carried a crane. It went down shortly before 12:30 a.m. Friday south of the Bay Bridge.
Authorities say 40-mph winds from the storm capsized it.
The barge carried more than 4,000 gallons of fuel and oil. Crews have boomed off the area and the owner plans to have salvage divers raise the barge.
The storm that hit Thursday also caused a landslide in the Oakland hills, and six homes were evacuated. It knocked out power to about 40,000 customers in the Bay Area but the electricity has been restored.

Three injured when boat overturns in Moreton Bay with 11 onboard
TWO crew and nine passengers aboard a charter fishing boat that overturned on the South Passage Bar have been returned safely to the mainland.
Paramedics met three passengers, one with a badly lacerated head, at Volunteer Rescue Marine headquarters at Cleveland after the men were returned from Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island.
The bedraggled men declined to talk about their early morning experience.
Senior police praised the brave actions of a police officer who dived into the water to help save those on board who could not reach life jackets, saying it was lucky everyone was accounted for.
Water police were called to the bar between North Stradbroke and Moreton islands just after 6am.
Bayside Patrol Group Acting Inspector Steve Hollands said there were potentially dire consequences when those on board were thrown into the water.
"The information that we've received is that a water police vessel was the first on scene and one of the officers entered the water to assist in extracting all of the persons on to the vessel," he said.
"My understanding was the actions of the officer was very brave.
"With any maritime situation, there's obviously a delay in getting resources out to them, which heightens the risk, so we're very grateful that all persons were able to be saved."
One person was flown to hospital and nine others have received medical treatment.
The vessel is being towed back to the mainland and investigations continue.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said one man was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with spinal precautions, while the other 10 were taken to the Dunwich Health Service Centre for further assessment.
Some passengers from 10-metre Moreton Island Fishing Charters vessel Firebird appeared to be suffering hypothermia, according to police.
Boat owner Mat Hubbard declined to comment.
Inspector Hollands said the vessel itself, the Firebird, was resting on the sand bar and would hopefully be retrieved later in the day.
IN GOOD HANDS: Passengers are loaded on to an ambulance at Cleveland.
EARLIER
Initial reports to police said nine passengers and two crew were on board when the vessel overturned between Moreton and North Stradbroke islands about 6am on Wednesday.
A police spokeswoman said all passengers and crew had been accounted for but one man had a serious back injury while another had taken in a large amount of water.
SAFE AND SOUND: VMR crewman Robert Cooper of Wellington Point leaves the rescue boat.
The Rescue 500 helicopter had been dispatched to meet water police as they headed to Dunwich, on North Stradbroke Island.
Queensland Ambulance Service acting operations supervisor Logan Smith said the charter fishing vessel capsized on the South Passage Bar.
Water police and emergency services were sent to the scene after an emergency beacon was activated.
Two people were flown to Brisbane by chopper and the other nine taken to Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island for medical assessment.
Supt Logan said one patient had a substantial scalp injury that needed treatment.

Two Alberta men dead after boat sinks off Vancouver Island near Tofino
Published on: May 1, 2017
The RCMP says two Alberta men died when a sport-fishing vessel overturned and sank off the west coast of Vancouver Island on Sunday.
The Mounties say the men are 32 and 42 years old, but their names and hometowns haven’t yet be released.
Staff Sgt. Annie Linteau says Tofino RCMP is investigating the capsizing of the 8.4-metre sport fishing vessel in waters northwest of Bartlett Island near Tofino.
She says three of the five men who were on board the vessel when it took on water and capsized were treated and released from hospital.
Linteau says other sport fishing vessels in the area helped rescue the men from the water, and Canadian Coast Guard personnel provided lifesaving measures.
Linteau says the RCMP and the Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of accident.
Someone on the boat made a distress call around 1:20 p.m., said Sub-Lt. Melissa Kia with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria.
“We were able to talk with the vessel, live, to confirm that the five passengers were abandoning into the water. While the boat was attempting to get in a better position to speak with us via cellphone, it lost communications with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre,” she said.
Coast guard rescue boats, a Royal Canadian Air Forces helicopter and a plane from CFB Comox were all dispatched to look for the passengers, and a broadcast was put out asking marine vessels in the area to search the area.
Two commercial float planes also responded to the call for help, Kia said, and one of them spotted the people in the water and directed rescuers to the location.
“All five people were recovered from the water by two vessels of opportunity (non-coast guard boats) that were very close to the position,” Kia said.
Jason Bertin said a float plane from his Tofino company, Atleo River Air Service, spotted the vessel and was able to pinpoint its location for rescuers.
“We got called by a local who asked us to go look, so we dispatched a float plane and we dispatched a helicopter out of the airport,” he said.
Bertin said he was in the helicopter but turned back after the vessel was spotted by the other aircraft.
All five people were taken to emergency health services in Tofino. A spokeswoman for Island Health said Sunday that the survivors were treated and released.
What caused the vessel to take on water remains unclear.
Kia said the sea was about two to three metres high Sunday afternoon and lighting conditions in the area were good. She said the water temperature off the west coast of Vancouver Island is between about eight and 10 degrees at this time of year.
Bertin said the vessel was located in waters “very close” to where the whale watching vessel Leviathan II capsized in October 2015 with 27 people on board. Six people died in that incident.
The Transportation Safety Board has yet to complete its investigation into the cause of the tragedy. In the days immediately following the sinking, investigators said Leviathan II passengers had been standing on one side of the top deck when a wave hit the opposite side of the vessel.

Cargo ship sinks off Cebu
May 13, 2017A cargo vessel sank early Sunday morning, May 7, about a kilometer from the shoreline of Talisay City, southern Cebu, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.
None of the 22 crewmembers of the MV Fortuner was hurt in the incident, the PCG said.
Sam Shipping Company Inc., based in Cebu City, owns the ship.
Commander Dionlett Ampil of PCG Cebu Station said that the cause of the sinking was still unknown.
“We will call the ship captain and the crew to identify the reasons. We only have initial data as of now,” he said on Monday.
The Fortuner, which had a gross tonnage of 1,474 metric tons, suffered a crack at the middle of its hull about 4:30 a.m., the report said.
All the vessel’s crewmembers were transferred to a sister ship, MTUG 38, at about 6:10 a.m., 20 minutes before the Fortuner finally sank, it added.
The ship owner, Benson Go, informed the PCG about the mishap, Ampil said.
“Immediately, this station deployed personnel and aluminum boat to verify the report. At 7:30 a.m., oil spill boom was prepared for deployment,” the report said.
The report added that the PCG personnel deployed the oil boom to contain a small surface spill of oil or fuel in the area where the vessel sank.

Ferry with 50 passengers sinks off Philippines, 7 die
June 12, 2017
MANILA: A passenger ferry with more than 50 people on board including its crew capsized and sank when it was battered by big waves and strong winds in Romblon province in the Visayas, killing seven passengers with three others missing, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
Commander Armand Balilio, the PCG spokesman, said the ill-fated vessel Alad Express 2 was bound for the capital city of Romblon in Romblon when the tragedy struck.
Citing initial reports, Balilio said the ferry with more than 50 passengers and crewmen on board left on Friday afternoon from Sibuyan island to the Romblon City port.
“While at sea, we were battered by big waves and strong winds which forced the ferry to crash into the rocks where it capsized and sank,” Balilio quoted one of the survivors as saying.
He added the PCG immediately sent a vessel to the area where it was assisted by fishermen in rescuing 45 passengers and crew as it continued to search for the three missing people.
Also on Friday, police reported that two fishermen were missing when a cargo ship rammed into their boat off the town of Naujan in Mindoro Oriental province in Southern Luzon.
Police said the ship crewmen apparently were not aware of the ramming as it was seen proceeding towards the north.
Because of its archipelagic character of more than 7,000 islands, passenger ferries and motorbancas have become one of the most popular and cheapest forms of sea transports for people to go from one island to another.
But maritime experts warned that lax enforcement and aging vessels have been responsible for past maritime disasters until the government took the necessary steps by preventing, among others, ferries from leaving ports at the height of typhoons or storms.

MMEA searches for two sailors after cargo ship sinks off Melaka
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has launched a search and rescue operation for two missing individuals after an Indonesian cargo vessel sank off Tanjung Keling in Melaka, near here.
MMEA director-general Maritime Admiral Datuk Zulkifli Abu Bakar said they received a report from the Marine Department at about 9.25am on Wednesday that the container vessel KM Avatar was partially submerged about 11 nautical miles from Tanjung Keling.
Admiral Zulkifli said the 57m-long KM Avatar, which was registered in Indonesia, was fully submerged at about 12.30pm on Wednesday.
He said that through information that MMEA obtained, 13 sailors were rescued by MV Undine, which was nearby at the time of the incident.
"Based on information from one of the rescued sailors, two individuals are missing. They are the ship's captain and the ship's cook," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
He added that the MMEA's search and rescue operation began at 10am on Wednesday using Guard Boat 49 from the Maritime District 5 Linggi and an AW139 helicopter from the Maritime Malaysia air station in Subang.
"The search and rescue operation is being carried out currently despite bad weather with winds of up to 40-50kph and waves that are 2.5 to 3.5 metres high," he said.
Admiral Zulkifli added that the 13 sailors who were rescued were brought to the Parameswara Jetty at Bandar Hilir in Melaka by Guard Boat 49 and will be brought to the Maritime District 5 Linggi office for further action.
He said the cause of the incident is still under investigation.

It is not common for these big war ships to suffer a collision. How can they be missed? They are HUGE. Their radar is modern, and even if radio communication is faulty, fog horns and clanging bells cannot be missed. The public will never get anything but some vapid excuse, as usual, because both these collisions were caused by the Earth wobble. The cover-up over Nibiru will prevail. Both these collisions happened in an essential bay area, where water displacement did not have room to disburse easily. Look at the time of day for these collisions.
The Fitzgerald was struck at 2:30 am on June 16, off the East Coast of Japan, when the Sun is rising over the Pacific and Nibiru’s magnetic N Pole is shoving the Earth’s magnetic N Pole as it looms up over the horizon. Japan is shoved violently northward during this Polar Push, creating a void in the bay area so sloshing and wave action offshore along the Pacific occurred. Water seeks its level, and seeks to fill the void. Boats find themselves suddenly displaced, and thrown together.
The Lake Champlain Ticonderoga collision occurred 12 hours later on May 9, in the afternoon when the Earth is doing a bounce back from the daily Polar Push against the Earth’s magnetic N Pole. Here S Korea was suddenly moved southward, again creating a void along its northern coastline, which results in the sloshing and wave action that can suddenly displace boats. Small boats in particular are unable to resist being carried by such wave action, which moves a LARGE amount of water en mass.

7 U.S. Navy sailors missing off Japan’s coast after destroyer collides with container ship
TOKYO — Seven U.S. Navy sailors are missing off the coast of Japan after an Aegis guided-missile destroyer, the USS Fitzgerald, collided with a container ship early Saturday, causing significant damage and flooding.
Three of the Fitzgerald’s crew members, including its commanding officer, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, were evacuated from the damaged vessel and are being treated at the U.S. naval hospital at Yokosuka, the home of the Navy’s Seventh Fleet.
Benson was reported to be in stable condition in the hospital, while the other two were still having their injuries assessed. The Seventh Fleet had set up an information center for families of sailors serving on the ship.
The cause of the collision was not yet clear.
“Right now we are focused on two things: the safety of the ship and the well-being of the sailors,” said Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
The USS Dewey, another destroyer, and two naval tugboats were at the scene, about 12 miles from the Izu Peninsula and 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, searching for the missing sailors on Saturday. Two Japanese coast guard cutters with helicopters were helping. The Fitzgerald returned to Yokosuka Naval Base.

Thanks God: Two fishermen escaped death after 17 days on sea as boat sinks
The Urban West Regional Police Commander (RPC), Hassan Nassir, confirmed the incident and elaborated that the police rushed the survivors to Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar where they underwent special treatment for four days.
IT might look like fiction from a script of a boxoffice movie, but for two Comorians it was a matter of life and death.
The two fishermen in a bizarre incident survived for 17 days on the sea, without food and clean water, after their boat capsized while on a fishing mission.
The fishermen, who were trawling in the Indian Ocean, held onto dear life when their boat capsized at an unknown area in the sea and ended up being washed onto the shores of Malindi Beach in Zanzibar, on June 13, this year.
The two lucky men also have well-wishers to thank after they quickly informed the police when they were discovered unconscious along the beach.
The Urban West Regional Police Commander (RPC), Hassan Nassir, confirmed the incident and elaborated that the police rushed the survivors to Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar where they underwent special treatment for four days.
He went on to name the two Comorian fishermen as Mohamed Ali Rashid (35) and Mohamed Said Swalim (37) and revealed that they were discharged from hospital on Friday.
He said that the fishermen were thankful to hard work and brilliant services from the Mnazi Mmoja Hospital doctors and nurses, who spent sleepless nights to save their lives. According to the fishermen’s account from the hospital bed, they met the near death experience when they were fishing in the deep seas.
Their boat was hit by strong waves and despite drawing all their experience and expertise to try and save the situation; their efforts were futile as the boat succumbed to waves and capsized. The fishermen then began a long journey to uncertainty when they started to swim hoping to reach the shores.
The fishermen swam for 13 days while eating raw fish and drinking sea water. They went on to explain that when tired, they just floated on water and resume their journey when after resting. But, in a sudden turn of events that almost claimed their lives, the fishermen ran out of food something that made the last four days of the journey difficult.
They started starving and were powerless to continue swimming and it is when they decided to float on water, until the waves washed them along the shores at Malindi Beach.
Speaking with the ‘Sunday News’ a doctor at the hospital who preferred anonymity because he was not the spokesperson, said that the ‘miracle’ fishermen survivors were in critical condition when they arrived, suffering from Hypernatremia, a situation whereby one has excess sodium in the body. According to the doctor, the problem was caused by eating fresh fish and sea water in large amounts.
“They had no food and water so the only way they could survive was by eating fresh fish and drinking ‘salty’ sea water and that is why they had Hypernatremia. We managed to help them gain consciousness first and then continued with other treatments.
Hypernatremia patients feel dizziness or even lose consciousness after blood sodium levels are significantly elevated,” said the anonymous doctor.
He added; “We came to understand what really happened to them after one of our team members who speaks their language translated to us that their boat capsized and they survived on sea water all the days.”
Expounding further, he said the victims had less chances of being found alive if they had spent two to three more days without being discovered, commending doctors on duty that day saying they offered a ‘heroic’ service.

At least three killed as Argentine fishing boat sinks off Chubut
Monday, June 19th 2017 - 10:07 UTC
The Mar del Plata-based “Repunte” had taken to sea from Puerto Madryn on June 13.
Argentine Coast Guard found Sunday the dead body of two of the nine crew members missing after Saturday's sinking of a fishing vessel off the coast of Argentina's southern province of Chubut, it was reported, while one more sailor whose body is yet to be retrieved is also feared dead and seven more are still missing.
The fishing vessel Repunte sank about 80 kilometers north of the coast of Rawson, in the Patagonian province of Chubut, it was reported. On Saturday, the Coast Guard managed to
rescue two survivors and detected the lifeless body of another sailor, shortly before stopping the search due to the weather that hit the area since the beginning of the weekend and for which the provincial government declared a state of emergency.
An airplane, a helicopter and the Coast Guard ship Prefecto Derbes are taking part in the search amidst waves of up to ten metres.
It all began Saturday morning, when the captain of the Argentine-flagged Repunte signaled the Maria Liliana, which sailed 16 nautical miles (about 32 kilometers) apart, that they were abandoning the ship in the middle of a strong storm.
The latter contacted the coastal station in Comodoro Rivadavia to request assistance, after which the search and rescue operation was launched. Once at the scene, the Coast Guard found an empty liferaft and was able to rescue one person alive. Another survivor was rescued by the helicopter's crew as well as one dead body.
The Mar del Plata-based Repunte had taken to sea from Puerto Madryn on June 13.
Federal authorites from Chubut's capital, Rawson, are in charge of investigating the incident.

Coast Guard helps 33 when rough waters capsize, swamp boats on Lake Erie
http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2017/06/coast_guard_helps_33_bo...

The U.S. Coast Guard helped a total of 33 boaters on Saturday when bad weather created rough water on Lake Erie, causing vessels to take on water or capsize.
The military said its crews rescued 19 people and escorted another 14 back to shore in four separate weather-related incidents.
The first incident occurred about 1:45 p.m. Saturday, June 24, about a mile off Gem Beach on Catawba Island, near Sandusky.
"Coast Guard Sector Detroit command center received notification of a pontoon boat, with 12 adults aboard, that was hit by rough seas and taking on water," the Coast Guard said in a news release.
Of the dozen, three in the water were rescued by a U.S. Customs and Boarder Patrol boat crew. The other nine still aboard the pontoon were given an escort back to Gem Beach Marine by the Coast Guard. There were no injuries.
Less than an hour later, Station Erie received a "mayday" call from someone aboard a 28-foot charter boat with seven people aboard. The operator said the boat was taking on water. The boat was sitting about three miles offshore of the Walnut Creek Access.
All those aboard were helped from the water by a Coast Guard boat crew. They were brought to shore, where paramedics waited. One person was treated for inhaling water.
At 8:20 p.m. Saturday, 911 dispatch relayed a call to Station Erie that a 22-foot boat with a dozen people on board had capsized in Presque Isle Bay. Of those, 10 were rescued by a Coast Guard boat crew, and a good Samaritan helped the other two. None were injured.
In the day's fourth rescue, Coast Guard staff from Station Erie rescued two kayakers while on patrol.
The day's weather conditions had winds whipping up 4-foot waves. A small craft advisory had been issued.
"These cases we were involved in today highlight the importance of wearing a life jacket at all times, and knowing the weather conditions before getting underway," said Petty Officer 2nd Class James Stephenson, a member of one of the rescue crews from Station Erie. "Today could have been dramatically different and could easily have ended in tragedy for any one of these people."

7 dead or missing after Vietnamese ship sinks in tropical storm
July 17, 2017
Rescue workers have been unable to locate where the 5,100-ton ship went down.
At least one man has died and six more are missing from a cargo ship that went down off Vietnam’s central coast on Monday in the middle of a tropical storm.
The ship was carrying 13 sailors and a cargo of coal from the northern province of Quang Ninh to Nghe An. A distress signal was sent out at 2 a.m. as the ship was seeking shelter near an island, but then it went off the radar.
As of 2 p.m. on Monday, local coast guards had rescued six crew members and recovered the body of the deceased, who was wearing a life jacket.
Nguyen Van Sang, one of the survivors who suffered head and leg injuries, said he was woken by screaming as the vessel quickly listed and capsized.
Rescue workers are searching for the remaining crew members, but no sightings of the 5,100-ton vessel have been reported.
The dead sailor was the first casualty of Tropical Storm Talas, the second storm to form in the East Sea and the first to make landfall in Vietnam this year.
Media reports said thousands of fishermen and tourists have been stranded offshore. Torrential rain has been sweeping through northern and central Vietnam, flooding streets in Hanoi and uprooting trees in nearby provinces.

Taiwanese tourist drowns in boat capsize in Philippines
Manila, July 21 (CNA) A 63-year-old Taiwanese woman died when a boat capsized in Cebu in the central Philippines during bad weather, while a child in her group suffered pleural effusion, local police said Friday.
The woman, surnamed Chen (陳), was trapped under the boat after it capsized near a resort on Bantayin Island on July 19, according to the police.
All the other 11 Taiwanese tourists on the boat were safe, and the child with pleural effusion is in stable condition, the police said.
The boat was operating in gusting wind and heavy rainfall, the police said, adding that further investigation is needed to determine the responsibility of the boat's operator.
Chen was traveling as an independent tourist with 11 family members and friends, according to Taiwan's Tourism Bureau.
They arrived at Bantayin Island on July 17 and embarked for Virgin Island on July 19, the bureau said, but the weather deteriorated when the group was heading back, causing the boat to capsize, the bureau said.
The survivors were swept back to Virgin Island, where they were rescued.

Close shave for 10 tourists, 2 crew members as boat sinks off T'ganu
MARANG: A fishing vessel carrying ten tourists and two crew members sank three nautical miles off Pulau Kapas here last night.
It was a nightmare for the tourists, who were on a squid-jigging expedition, when the 10.5-metre fishing boat developed mechanical failure and water began to gush in, causing to vessel to sink within minutes.
Thankfully, a tekong and six crew members of a fishing vessel nearby managed to save all the passengers just before their boat disappeared beneath the surface of the South China Sea in the 8pm incident.
The survivors were later sent to the Pulau Kapas jetty.
It is learnt that a faulty water pump inside the vessel’s engine room had contributed to the mishap, while choppy waters had facilitated the sinking.
Tekong Mohd Azam Ghazali said he saw a man bailing out water from the ill-fated boat, but did not sense anything amiss.
"Shortly after that, the boatman sent out a distress signal. I quickly manoeuvred my vessel in its direction and saw that the rear portion of the boat was already filled with water.
"As my boat was near enough, all the tourists and two crew members quickly jumped onto my vessel and within minutes, the stern of the crippled boat began to sink. The bow lifted vertically before the whole vessel sank into the water.
"The sea was very choppy during the time of the incident," he said.
It is learnt that all the tourists left the island and Marang this morning.
Meanwhile, State Fisheries director Zawawi Ali said he has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
He said safety is of primary concern and he wants to ensure that the boat owner had adhered to all safety measures, including regular maintenance.
